@TheLethalCarrot to make it a bit clearer for the querant. I find the description provided by the standard close reason a bit too generic.

Well, the 3rd custom close-reason actually is nothing but the general default SE off-topic reason copied pretty much word for word into a custom one afterall.

Got the cheesy hat :)

@Marvin this seems like it could be describing half the books in the fantasy genre

The OP did state as such
@SQB Fancy adding in a source for that? At the moment both answers state opposite opinions for essentially the same reason both unsourced so would be nice to have see which is actually correct.

@Mithrandir :Yeah. Needs a comment to explain that.

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot well, it's the same source, actually.
The following "conversation" and reluctance in handing the phone over to Thor makes it clear he has in fact hung up.

1:52 PM
I just mean you both say you swipe your thumb "towards/away from" the button to select an option but both are from experience I imagine. Adding in a source for which way is correct would go a long way because at the moment with no experience of the phone myself there's nothing telling me which is actually correct

@TheLethalCarrot Heh
That's like those terrible modern mobile phone interfaces where if you press the button under the 9 when entering your pin code, it deletes a digit instead of accepting what you entered. They can't follow existing good designs even if it kills them, so nobody can use those phones.
"swipe" seriously

To clarify here do you mean get rid of [tron] completely and replace it with [tron-1982] and [tron-franchise]? If that is the case surely having [tron] and [tron-1982] would be a better approach. — TheLethalCarrot 37 mins ago

Good morning. I have a bit of what I think is an open-ended question that I'm unsure would fit the format of the main site. Pretty much I have an idea I want to flesh out for a character and want to find similar works. Would this fit in the main site or is it too forumy?

IE "I have x idea but have not been able to find many works with similar ideas are there any with this idea that I could reference for more inspiration?"

SQB
That would likely be too "forumy" indeed.

Although chat is a great place to ask

SQB
The only way that would fly, would be "what was the first WoSFoF (Work of SF or Fantasy) to feature X", but those only really work if X is a well-known concept or trope.

Still on topic even if it isn't well-known concept/trope though of course

Ah. Right I'm more after a few reference materials to draw ideas from.

4:17 PM
If a few then it's a list/too broad for main

Pretty much I'm having a character form a dimension within their soul, within she is going to parse pieces of her soul to become the living beings who reside within and as they pass(die) she would skim the life experience from the soul piece before 'rebirthing' it back into the realm.

Effectively she's going to be a true deity of this world because the world IS her. I have the base setup but I feel like somethings missing so I've been doing research on similar stuff without much luck

If you need help with worldbuilding, Worldbuilding might be able to help you with that.

You could always ask over on Worldbuilding too, they usually have some good ideas and I'm like 99% sure it'd be on topic
@Mithrandir ... damnit

SQB
Hmm... You might want to read "The Egg" by Andy Wier (of The Martian fame).

@TheLethalCarrot ;)

4:21 PM
Not really world building. She's a character I play in a RP, so while there will be a world inside it'll likely be a background thing unless my fellow RPers decide it's interesting enough to go inside. Then I'd have to worldbuild lol

Teach me for going for the longer comment

@SQB Actually drew from that for this idea slightly

@Aaron Worldbuilding includes figuring out how your character works.

Mmm, true lol.

SQB
Ah, good. And have you read Second Person, Present Tense by Daryl Gregory?

4:22 PM
Thanks. I was hoping more for reference books or stuff which is why I came here first but I could go there for a bit more help as well.

From what I understand, you're trying to create a sort of Gaea deity?

@Mithrandir Kinda yea? I wanted to do something different, at least different within my group. I doubt this idea is THAT original
@SQB I have not I'll look it up though. Any other suggestions?

Oh, also, maybe Role-playing Games could help?

Buddhism perhaps.

@Gothamite24 Kurt is cool, but I've always had a soft spot for the first X-Man to have a lead solo feature: Hank McCoy, the Beast. Admittedly, his 1970s stint in the Avengers is where I met the character. (The Angel had a three-part backup solo story in a Ka-Zar reprint book, and Marvel Tales).

@Jenayah ah, then I’m curious what your thoughts are on the productivity of the protesting. It seems to me like Macron and the government are open to some change now and like the continued rioting is not necessary. Also, more generally applicable, do you think that if the government didn’t send in riot police during mass protests that the violence would be less and that the intensity wouldn’t be so much? (I’ve only read a bit about this stuff today so feel free to very liberally correct me)
I understand that rioters will break laws and cause destruction, but pushing back on it with so much force just seems to fuel the action in a lot of cases

6:26 PM
First off, let me remind that while I'm not a big fan of how the YV are handling their protests, it should be reminded that not every violence comes from the protesters themselves, but by troublemaker jerks who seize the opportunity to come and break stuff
As for the productivity, ... It's not like they've gained anything so far, and keeping on the blockades feels a bit much after weeks.
I'll have to say that I know I can feel bitter about the blockades, and I am - two weeks ago there was the national charity collection in supermarkets, and a whole lot of them had been blocked and couldn't refill their stocks before it. So not only there's fewer donations (as prices go upevery year, people have less money etc), even the ones who were willing to buy cans or stuff couldn't in some places.
As a volunteer, it's something we weren't exactly prepared to face... This is supposed to be all redistributed to other charity and humanitarian groups, and so far... Well let's just say that you can feel how this was an off year, and it sucks when you simply don't have anything to give to people who need it :/
As for the powers that be being open to change, once again, I'm not the biggest optimists on it. It may come from me being generally not very trustful in politicians to change stuff for the better, but I don't see why they'd change anything. Sure, the social climate isn't exactly at its best, but the higher-ups aren't affected personnaly so far so...
And, bet ya there's hope Christmas and New Year celebrations will help forget this
Now about fighting force with force, it's a vicious circle, unortunately. The YV made it pretty clear on the first weekend that they weren't here for laughs; violence wasn't promised, but lots of angry people + other angry people who disagree with the firsts is boudn to degenerate

Q: What Mat say in the Old Tongue?

Newbie12345In chapter 27 of A Memory of Light, Mat says: Laero lendhe an indemela Min thinks it was: ...Something about a flag. When questioned about it he says: It's a saying of the Fallen Army of Kardia What does that saying mean?

So it was only natural to have police monitoring the situation, but at the same time, as police wrongdoings has also been a huge issue (though not enough spoken of and punished), well, that fuels the dormant resentment and stuff goes bananas from there
It's not a very flattering situation I'm describing for either sides, I know that (call me a pessimist...) but it's a stalemate... and it was already even before mid-November

@Mithrandir well, the question itself would rather be POB

9:32 PM
To me it was Unclear.

COMBO!

@Jenayah I am learning.

I see that :)

9:44 PM
I have good teachers.

The best.

Some of them, at least.

sticks tongue out

It was already out.

dangit

You need something to represent pulling it back in, so that you can then stick it out agin in the future.

Or I can grow a new tongue

Maybe :d
@Jenayah That works too.

@Alex no, that smiley is for when I successful touch my nose with my tongue.

Wouldn't that be :-d ?
This one is more like touching your eyes with your tongue.

I always just assume they failed to capitalize the D.

9:57 PM
@Alex no, if I ever do that I'll try the next step and cover my whole face with my tongue. And when I do, I'll post a d.

@Jenayah I don't doubt your skills, but...

Or just always write in capitals, that'll help too.

Well that would make you more confident in me than I am myself for this challenge

@Jenayah Confidence... nice.

Holy sh*** it's a small world, by searching for scifi.stackexchange.com/q/201596/98028 I encountered the fanfiction blog of someone I knew from another forum :o

@Alex It'th hawd to tawk with youw tong owt.
^However, it's still easy to type with your tongue out.

scifi.stackexchange.com/q/201603/98028 this is why I hate anime-id. Either you find gazillions of results with the same plot, or you're not thinking straight and tell yourself "uh, the getting swallowed part seems kinda unique. Let's Google anime swallow space alien robots pregnant" which only returns porn

@Jenayah I’ve discovered several people’s identities from seeing them in different forums.

@Alex well in that case she was using the same username

This is still waiting for a coup de grâce delete vote, and its sister question could use some too

Q: 80s dystopian book concerning humans on another planet riding carnival rides

MollyA coworker was telling me about a Sci-Fi book he read in the 80s but couldn't remember the title. He vaguely remembers there being humans on another planet who would randomly choose 5 leaders. These people could also donate tissue to avoid working. They also can go to a "carnival" and ride the r...

@Jenayah Not as bad, then.

whaddya mean?

The person you found using the same username probably doesn't care. People who accidentally give away their identities probably do care.

oh, right

Though they don't necessarily know they've given it away.

11:42 PM
@RDFozz what do you mean haha

@SethTaddiken It's a reference to the card game, bridge. Each hand has two phases. In phase 2, the players each have to play one card from their hand. The first player to play a card determines the suit; high card from that suit wins that set of cards (called a trick). In phase 1, you have to predict the minimum number of tricks you'll take, and can choose a suit to be trump (if someone plays a trump card, that beats all cards in the current suit). This is called bidding.
One option when you're bidding, instead of choosing a suit to be trump, is to choose no trump. So, if you have all the high cards from all the suits in your hand while bidding, you'll want to play the hand with no trump.
