8:38 AM
@DavidCarlisle SiteGround tried to charge me for my website today: sorted, but I need to get my new one up-and-running!
@DavidCarlisle I wonder if I can find someone who knows about Jekyll and site design ...

@JosephWright oh no

@PauloCereda Was a bit of surprise!

8:53 AM
@DavidCarlisle Things look better now ...
@PauloCereda ^^^

@JosephWright ooh

@PauloCereda I'll fiddle about a bit today if I get time

@JosephWright after tea, I suppose. :)

@PauloCereda Sounds good
@PauloCereda I have some real work to do: urgent stuff where the deadline has been changed

@JosephWright ooh
@JosephWright oh no
@JosephWright can you blame someone? :)

9:09 AM
@JosephWright yep mainly just missing titles on the main pages?
@PauloCereda he could blame you.

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@DavidCarlisle Exactly: I've just used the LaTeX site CSS as a model, a bit of work needed to get it 'right'
@DavidCarlisle The Pages need a layout too

@JosephWright yes I noticed the non-blog part is unstyled

@DavidCarlisle Yup
@DavidCarlisle, @PauloCereda I think I can get enough stuff sorted today to be able to move from the old hosting, but I really would like to find someone to do a better job than me. I wonder about asking UK-TUG for some money ;)

@JosephWright that would be interesting

9:19 AM
@JosephWright When I did souldern I started from the "Cayman" theme which is fairly minimal but I think I ended up redefining more or less everything anyway so the themes are good at "quick start" but in some ways get in the way when you really try to force a particular design

@PauloCereda I was thinking of Jonas (who did the LaTeX site)
@DavidCarlisle Yes, I get that: I'm not too fussed about the detail, I just want to be able to have the content looking vaguely OK

@JosephWright that's a pretty exacting design spec:-)

@DavidCarlisle I do like my current layout (GeneratePress), but I'm not looking to do the work to reproduce it all

@JosephWright oh

@DavidCarlisle Pages now have a layout
@DavidCarlisle, @PauloCereda You think the site looks usable?

9:30 AM
@JosephWright yes!

@JosephWright yes really if you put a title on every page and controlled the page width in the non blog bits you would be good to go

@DavidCarlisle Need to work out how to get the title to appear ...
@DavidCarlisle Non-blog bits are working
@DavidCarlisle Also need a footer with my copyright
@DavidCarlisle, @PauloCereda I'll do the CNAME stuff as soon as I get get my title to appear :)

@JosephWright :)

@JosephWright <h1 class="project-name"><a href="/">{{ site.title | default: site.github.repository_name }}</a></h1> ?

@DavidCarlisle no XML? I am disappointed. :)

9:36 AM
@PauloCereda I have some XML that generates some jekyll that generates some javascript that generates some html that generates some rendering...

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@PauloCereda which means you can see all the houses with my postcode at souldern.org/home/houses/?h=ox27+7jz :-)

@DavidCarlisle ooh I know the last one

9:52 AM
@DavidCarlisle I'll try

@JosephWright: I heard the oxygen went for a second date with potassium. It went OK2. :)
2

10:06 AM
@JosephWright or page.title of course, depends what you want. (I take the title from # zzz content in the page rather than the yaml metadata in most cases, so just take the overall site title from the jekyl template

@DavidCarlisle Right, the title is now showing up

@DavidCarlisle ooh zzz

10:30 AM
@DavidCarlisle I better change the colour scheme

@JosephWright I just thought is looks like the latex page ;-)

@UlrikeFischer Well yes, that's why I better change it
@UlrikeFischer Hopefully the new site is now workable: I think minor tweaks can go into the 'live' site
@UlrikeFischer I thought about leaving it like that, but I don't want to be misleading: we'd need team agreement

@JosephWright you could put your duck above than nobody could confuse it ;-). On the about page the code button looks odd.

@UlrikeFischer Yeah, I need to fix that
@UlrikeFischer Like I've said, I probably need to find a helper for details

@JosephWright while I would be glad to help I can't - my knowledge about web design stopped around 10 years ago and when I hear jekyll I only expect hyde to appear around the corner ;-)

10:53 AM
@JosephWright in other news vvvv

?

@UlrikeFischer Cool
@UlrikeFischer did it make it into MikteX yet?
@UlrikeFischer Is that the XeTeX dev build?

@JosephWright yes, just downloaded from web32tex.

@UlrikeFischer Ah, right

@JosephWright Not in the normal version, it could be in miktex next - this has been updated yesterday.

@UlrikeFischer Ah, right: I'd seen that pdfTeX has \expanded
@DavidCarlisle, @UlrikeFischer, @PauloCereda Colour scheme updated

11:08 AM
@JosephWright the green was more friendly

@UlrikeFischer I'll think about it: like I say, I don't want to 'step on the toes' of the team site design
@UlrikeFischer Perhaps something blue ...

@JosephWright the "some tex developments" title (or body) could do with some top margin, also it is coloured link in home and black in the others, the page width for "about" seems to be different the whole page jumps if you select that top level menu

@JosephWright I'm not good in choosing colors ;-) I can only judge the results.
@DavidCarlisle I have blue links everywhere.

@UlrikeFischer yes cached I think (still too close to top though:-))

@DavidCarlisle yes, but I think the title isn't setup yet.

11:23 AM
@UlrikeFischer I know, just providing real-time constructive criticism:-)

@DavidCarlisle you could offer some color suggestions

@DavidCarlisle The jumping is strange: they are identical templates. I guess a space or similar in the 'fill in the blanks' places ...

@UlrikeFischer “any color so long as it is black”

Aug 12 at 12:30, by David Carlisle
@UlrikeFischer my tex is very modern, not just black and white.

@JosephWright Now I suppose main thing missing is date/title info in posts, then the site seems perfectly usable, even if you tweak the design later

11:31 AM
@DavidCarlisle @DavidCarlisle Like I've said, the plan at the moment is to get things workable for a move
@DavidCarlisle The layout issue is related to having a header as the first line of the content ... I might talk to Jonas

@JosephWright perhaps but body {margin-top:.5em} in the global css wouldn't hurt as a default

3 hours later…
2:31 PM
@DavidCarlisle, @UlrikeFischer, @PauloCereda I'm going to move my site registration to somewhere I can fiddle with the DNS, then flip the switch
I better sort out RSS ...

2:52 PM
Cookie consent and RSS sorted ....

@JosephWright your legal blurb has double quoted &lt;pre&gt; rather than <pre>

@DavidCarlisle I know ...

@JosephWright :-)

@DavidCarlisle Talking to my normal registrar to get the DNS moved, then will flip the CNAME record
@DavidCarlisle I've fixed loads of stuff: first post once I flip the switch will be about that!
@DavidCarlisle Looking forward to saving some cash :)
@DavidCarlisle Doesn't work :(

@JosephWright odd I tried that amount on your pages (via the console in firefox) but you may have a conflicting setting elsewhere

3:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle I've just done the same: doesn't work. But adding some vertical padding does
@DavidCarlisle Try now
@DavidCarlisle I quite like that I can fiddle with the HTML/CSS quite easily ... been a few years, but I think it's not as scary as people imagine

@JosephWright better (more than I suggested:-)

@DavidCarlisle Sure: like I said, I think it would be a good idea to find a designer to make some suggestions
I plan to ask in the blog once I'm sorted
@DavidCarlisle Too much?
@DavidCarlisle In the end, the conversion is not anything like as bad as I expected

3:24 PM
@JosephWright yes I had similar experience, I got something working in a weekend and cleaned up after a couple more, and the resulting files are a lot more regular than the old site files which only existed online

@DavidCarlisle :)

3:55 PM
I've finally figured out Italians and cooking. They think all recipes are licensed using LPPL: if you change the ingredients you must also change the name.
7

4:44 PM
@AlanMunn Garlic in carbonara? That's worse than using cream!

@egreg I'm not disagreeing. :) These videos are fun to watch.
@egreg Americans put too much garlic in everything, and garlic in things that absolutely shouldn't have it. And they think that's the Italian way.

@AlanMunn They'd be surprised when learning that most Italian dishes don't have garlic.

@egreg Exactly!

@egreg no garlic, just ham and pineapple then, for the authentic Italian taste.

@egreg Do I need to rename my osso bucco simmering in the oven with a garlic clove?

5:03 PM
@UlrikeFischer You can use garlic in the ossobuco. I wouldn't, but I'm not used to it because my father has a kind of allergy to it.

@egreg uff. I'm relieved (and it isn't much garlic ...).

@UlrikeFischer Even better if you pull it away before serving.

@egreg it is a complete glove, so yes it is removed before serving.

@DavidCarlisle We have forests of pineapple trees, that's well known!

5:48 PM
@JosephWright oh
@AlanMunn ooh vampires
@DavidCarlisle ooh
Amazon US is better than Amazon Brasil.

@PauloCereda Amazon Brasil will soon disappear.
2

@AlanMunn I see what you did there. :)
Go Mata Atlântica. :)

3 hours later…
8:28 PM
@egreg I don't know if you ever tried Spaghetti aglio olio without garlic. To me this doesn't sound right.

@marmot Like a “panino con salame” without salame?

@egreg Marmot's are vegetarian, so we would order "panino senza salame" anyway. ;-)

@marmot Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

@marmot Or, for vegetarian marmots, “Sauerkraut” without Kraut?

@egreg Hi :)

8:34 PM
@Sebastiano Ciao!

I had dinner with a corn and rice sandwich with soy chocolate and a relaxing herbal tea.
@egreg How are you?
@egreg Here in Sicily we are at 20 degrees in the morning and the temperature drops to 12-13 in the evening

@Sebastiano I know. :-) Here's 13 is the high.

@egreg We do not eat Sauerkraut unless we have problems with our digestion.

@marmot Aren't sauerkraut heavy to digest at night?

@Sebastiano In southern California the maximal temperature during the day is about 22 degrees. And if you eat Sauerkraut at night, make sure that you are not staying at a youth hostel with very few bathrooms. ;-)

8:40 PM
@marmot You mean night gases? Ahahahaha

@Sebastiano Just don't do it. You have soooo good food in Sicily. (I was in Erice last year.)

@egreg ^^^

@UlrikeFischer That looks like fine ossobuco!

@marmot As a good Sicilian, I've never been there. They told me it's a good place and it's very nice. I travel very little for vacation indeed I tell you that my holidays are rare.

@egreg ;-). I'm not bad at cooking - even if I put cream in a carbonara ...

8:43 PM
@UlrikeFischer But is this a real picture of your dinner? :-)

@UlrikeFischer Heresy! Prepare the stake!

@AlanMunn Hi, and good LaTeX

@Sebastiano yes

@UlrikeFischer :-O
@UlrikeFischer Is that Milanese risotto? And a good wine from Piemonte. It is true?

@Sebastiano I was not there for vacation.

8:48 PM
Excuse me but what have I done wrong that every time I ask a question I find myself persecuted by this user? What should I do?
@UlrikeFischer I'm sure he's eating and I'm not bothering him. Sorry to bother you.
@marmot Help me :-) ahahahahha
Are you all eating now :-)?

@Sebastiano Tell him or her that you are from Sicily... maybe this works. ;-)

@marmot Ahahahahh but I am very quiet but I get angry easily when I am attacked unjustly. There are many very good Sicilians but for example where I live I always have discussions. For example, I reprimanded a man who emptied the cigarette butts of his car on the sidewalk of my house. You can't imagine the reaction. Good and humble people in Sicily are always attacked. I am not for quarrels but for fairness.

@Sebastiano Well, this might the part you should not tell your special friend. ;-)

@marmot No:-( I don't like boys :-)
@Skillmon Hi, and good evening.

@Sebastiano Hi Sebastiano. I'm sorry your question got downvoted, but I don't think you should get too concerned about it either.

9:02 PM
@HenriMenke Hi, also to you. Excuse me for my bad english
@AlanMunn And how do you know I got a downvote. Exactly 17 minutes after my question.

@Sebastiano My impression is that the more fuss you make of it, the more it encourages whoever likes to do this to you. Maybe if you just ignore the downvotes altogether, they might stop.
4

@Sebastiano anyone with a high enough rep can see the number of up and down votes on any post

@Sebastiano the question certainly didn't deserve a downvote but it was not that good a question either. The "MWE" was far from being minimal, you could have just posted the box code, you certainly didn't need all the font settings and (unused) a3paper and \showhyphens{matematica} you don't need ever (and you have it twice)

@DavidCarlisle David says hello in the meantime. I definitely don't blame you. Unfortunately, I'm always in a hurry and I don't concentrate. I would like someone to help me and sincerely I would like a great holiday with a person close to me dear.
@AlanMunn I'm not attacking you certainly have votes, but fairness. Can you be so rigid for so little? I in two years have given only 5 downvotes.

9:12 PM
@Sebastiano that really isn't an excuse. If you do not have time to prepare a reasonable example, then you do not have time to post a question.
2

@DavidCarlisle I don't like lies. I didn't think the packages were needed and I didn't notice the code. Now I'll fix it with your instructions.

@Sebastiano I think you misunderstand. The downvote is not from me. I also downvote very rarely.

@Sebastiano you ask why people downvote you and then you say that you are always in a hurry and don't concentrate and so post poorly constructed questions. Do you not think that these things may be related.
@Sebastiano why do you always talk about lies? I have no idea what you refer to by such references.
@Sebastiano your question was just about how to put A and E in a box of the same width, so the example could have just had and \documentclass{article\begin{document} \fbox{A} \fbox{E} \end{document}` That would be a minimal example.

@DavidCarlisle Because in my life to have the confidence of someone I always have to say that I'm telling the truth. My colleague always tells me that I have to stop saying that I do not tell lies.

@Sebastiano It just has nothing to do with tex and it is just really really strange that you bring up such things when discussing a post on a tex forum.
@Sebastiano there. the person who downvoted left a comment saying why, And as I predicted it was because you should have made a far more reasonable example.

9:19 PM
@samcarter Just to let you know that I 100% support your comment here. The comments seem to have a slight tendency to run out of control, though.
@Sebastiano You are making poor Ångström bigger than he is, 1Å=10^{-10}m and not 10^{-9}.
@Sebastiano My apologies! I just realized that Werner seems to have introduced the wrong Ångström.

@marmot The smallest Swede, ever!

@Sebastiano hi!

9:44 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen but with the tallest letter in common use in English language papers.

@JosephWright May we already look at your new site?

@DavidCarlisle Thanks! I only found github.com/josephwright/josephwright.github.io and did not conclude that other URL.
Nice and clean.

10:00 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen If you say so... ;-) (Probably you do not know the jokes about the Greek physicist Nanopoulos.... ;-)

10:30 PM
@StefanKottwitz Yup: or 'very basic' if you prefer ;)
@StefanKottwitz Just sorting out DNS, etc., for the move

@JosephWright Why does your website use cookies and why does it pull in some third-party JavaScript bullshit from Cloudflare?
@JosephWright As far as I can see your website does not even set any cookies, so you don't need consent at all.

@HenriMenke New one is hosted on GitHub, they have analytics, that means cookies ...
@HenriMenke Ole one is WordPress, same issue: any hit tracking means the potential for cookies
@HenriMenke JavaScript is for the cookie consent: one can copy-paste it into the site (see the LaTeX team one), but in the end it's the same: you need to cover your behind

@JosephWright Also I can see requests for https://josephwright.github.io/fonts/roboto_regular.woff and https://josephwright.github.io/fonts/roboto_light.woff which do not exist. But I suggest you just get rid of this font bloat in the first place. Right now your site loads pretty fast.

@HenriMenke That's probably due to doing some copy-paste from the LaTeX team set up

@JosephWright No, the site does not set cookies, so no consent is required.

10:42 PM
@marmot Oh, this comment thread really became a bit long-winded.... To bring this discussion to an end, maybe it would be good if you would convert your comment into an answer -- maybe make it a community wiki answer and knowledge Zarkos first comment if you scruple.

@HenriMenke That will change once I get Google Analytics set up
@HenriMenke Font stuff zapped

@JosephWright Please don't... :(
@JosephWright You also haven't set a page title. Currently the title is empty.

@HenriMenke Why not? Every site on the internet has it ...
@HenriMenke Still working on bits and pieces ;)

11:00 PM
@samcarter @marmot better close it as solved in comments. "Draw it for me questions" with only a picture is one thing, but problems should show code.

@UlrikeFischer Well, there are 4 close votes already. (I can see how experienced users may not be too excited to see such questions again and again, but maybe one should keep in mind that it is not one user who asks these again and again, but always a new person who does not know all the history.)

@JosephWright Mine doesn't and I honestly don't see the point of analytics if you're not running a business.

@marmot sure. But the user already got what he/she wanted: A solution for the problem. From now on one only has to decide if and how much value the question has for other people.

@HenriMenke You not at all interested how many people read your content?

@JosephWright I could not care less.

11:14 PM
@UlrikeFischer Yes, of course. As @samcarter suggested, I answered it and made it a community wiki in order to make clear that this is not to steal points from Zarko or someone else. (Whether or not I take the reputation points seriously is a separate question.) I guess that the issue is that people think differently. We are used to writing codes, but others just copy codes from somewhere and want to slightly modify it, and for those this information may be somewhat useful.

11:35 PM
@DavidCarlisle @marmot @UlrikeFischer @egreg @AlanMunn @Skillmon I apologize to all of you, but the Internet connection has only just arrived. I waited, but I would have written tomorrow morning.
@barbarabeeton Thank you for your suggestion for {}^
@DavidCarlisle I'll try to learn from my constant mistakes.
@marmot I would have burned my degree if I had misjudged the unit of measure of Angstrom :-). And don't apologize. Only I checked my question and wondered where was the error that I could not find.

@Sebastiano No, it was really my bad and I am really sorry. (On the other hand, the user who introduced the error is usually very good at telling others what they did wrong in his opinion ... so I decided to add a comment as well...;-)

@marmot No apologies.
@marmot i want write to an user @fontgeologist this: Dear Sir, personally, I would never have allowed myself to write to someone I do not know and do not attend about behavioural issues. Obviously, my attitude, which for you might have seemed incorrect, is the result of an unwelcome user whom I simply offended.

@Sebastiano I guess it is best if we all calm a bit down. Written comments typically sound tougher than they are meant to be. (I'll now go play basketball... then I will be very calm ;-)

@marmot The user with little score who entered the answer offended me; you can find it in meta tex stack near your comment. It haunts me. :-(
@marmot I'm going to bed. I have class tomorrow. A big hug and do not apologize understood? I make a lot of mistakes. Good play.

11:54 PM
@Sebastiano if you want to write that (which seems a very strange thing to write) you could ping that user under your question, the @ will not work here. He did not downvote because of your "attitude" but simply because you had posted a very poorly constructed question, which is a bit harsh by the norms on this site which does not see much downvoting but not at all unreasonable by the conventions of most of the network.
