Hi Guys, i hv some question about the Linux Swap Memory. The company has a Inhouse Business App such as ERP,CRM. So the programmer told that the server'swap memory need to be upgraded, how do i find some test tool to test whether it is hardware issue or coding skill issue?

9:46 AM
@YongLin What I presume you mean with "upgraded" is "expanded" or "increased". I seriously doubt that you can or want to make actual changes to the application to make it use less memory.
@YongLin See e.g. duckduckgo.com/… (links to the U&L site relating to increasing swap)

Hello @Fabby

4:43 PM
Hi @PrabhjotSingh

Bonjour @FaheemMitha How are you ?

@PrabhjotSingh Please don't ping me to say hello...
(Even when I'm busy, I'll come and have a look as I think you need someting urgent...)
;-)

@Fabby ok. I 'll take care next time.

You did it again! ;-) :D

@PrabhjotSingh Not great. But hanging in there. Thanks for asking.

4:58 PM
@FaheemMitha you bought capital market ?

@PrabhjotSingh No, I haven't. Can you remind me how I purchase it?
And do you have any recommendations regarding Indian investing books?

@FaheemMitha It is available on stalls. Mad money by Cramer

@Fabby Unfortunately replies currently work that way. I put in a feature request for a non-pinging reply version, but nothing happened. C'est la vie.
@PrabhjotSingh Could I buy it online? I'm not sure which stalls.
I now cannot remember where I posted that non-ping reply request. It's somewhere out there.

@FaheemMitha dunno but their website has phone no. and email. Being published in your city.

@PrabhjotSingh ok
capitalmarket.com ?

5:05 PM
@FaheemMitha yes.

@PrabhjotSingh Ok.
@PrabhjotSingh Isn't Mad Money a TV program?
Not so hard to find, as it turns out...

Q: Using the chat reply function without pinging

Faheem MithaIf you use the reply function in chat, it currently does two things. It links your message to an earlier message. It pings the person who wrote the message you are linking to. In some cases, it can be useful to decouple these two. Specifically, one might want to link to someone elses message ...

@FaheemMitha It is. But there is a book by that title.

Please feel free to upvote the question, folks. If upvotes hit a 100 or something, the POB might do something about it. Or not. I've no idea what heuristics they use. I think I'll abuse my ownership of this room and pin it, at least for a bit.
@PrabhjotSingh Oh, I see.
You could also upvote the link.
@PrabhjotSingh I actually asked about an Indian-specific book.
Though of course any references are welcome.
Sorry, I mean star the link.

@FaheemMitha votes caste by less than 15 rep are recoreded but not counted when i attempted.

@PrabhjotSingh Where?

5:13 PM
@FaheemMitha There is a picture book that boasts of 101 investment ideas. But i am unable to remember its title.

:47549561yes, i did.
@FaheemMitha ok. so ping is different from reply .

5:30 PM
@FaheemMitha you should probably unaccept the answer too; otherwise it gives the impression the feature request has been dealt with (I know there’s a tag for that, but it can’t do any harm)

@StephenKitt Done. Thanks for the suggestion. I suppose no IIPs are at risk?

@FaheemMitha IIPs? Internet Points?

@StephenKitt Close. Imaginary Internet Points.

Meta SE does have its own reputation so Dennis would lose 15 points, but out of 20.1k I imagine it doesn’t matter.

@StephenKitt Oh, does it?
Hmm, Looks like I got a downvote on that question. Though I can't tell, not having sufficient privileges.

6:33 PM
@PrabhjotSingh click the sound icon in the top-right(ish)? Though it'd be nice to have a few extra options (e.g., only when not staring at the chat screen)
@FaheemMitha yeah, you have +15 / -1

6:46 PM
Every once in a while, someone posts a "do X in bash" and it gets under my skin and I come up with a bad idea
0
A: How to generate list of months using bash?

Jeff SchallerYou probably didn't mean to restrict it to bash, but ... you could. Using only bash, but bash 4.2 or newer (to support printf %(fmt)T), and assuming only the number of seconds in a day (though it should be leap-second safe): #!/bin/bash now=$(printf '%(%s)T' -1) thism=$(printf '%(%B)T' "$now") ...

is my latest bad idea

@derobert clicking on sound icon does nothing.

@PrabhjotSingh Is this the one you meant? amazon.com/dp/B000N2HBOS

7:09 PM
@FaheemMitha yes. I failed 12 years back in investing. Read books related to investing after 2015.
@FaheemMitha you won't believe I read Graham's book in 2017.
And I haven't read any Indian book related to this.

@PrabhjotSingh Failed how?

@FaheemMitha then i lost almost 100 percent.

@PrabhjotSingh Sorry to hear that. Did you get better at it after that?

My uncle and mentor taught me after that.
@FaheemMitha Losses act as teachers.

@PrabhjotSingh Were your uncle and your mentor different people? :-)

7:24 PM
@JeffSchaller And an upvote! Sometimes when the OP wants to eat pig shit you have to feed them pig shit.

@FaheemMitha yes, uncle is father's elder. Mentor was a friend, 25 years older than me.

@JeffSchaller (though the script is elegant and readable)

@PrabhjotSingh I see.

@FaheemMitha I still can't understand markets. So irrational.

@PrabhjotSingh I thought the point was to not to try to understand them.

7:27 PM
@JeffSchaller :D :D :D

@Fabby thanks for the compliments on my pig shit! :) I wasn't expecting an upvote, to be honest -- finger hovered over the delete button for a while

(Too bad you're in the US or I'd take you out to the local Bierstube.)
@JeffSchaller It made me smile and think back to an ex-boss of mine.

@FaheemMitha Uncle asked always buy if stock falls you already own. Mentor told me repeatedly do research. He was a real magician.
You heard Dollar cost of averaging ?

@PrabhjotSingh "always buy if stock falls you already own"? Why?
@PrabhjotSingh Vaguely.

@FaheemMitha say i buy a stock at 90. If it falls further add more.
@FaheemMitha amazon.in/Value-Money-Prabhat-Patnaik-ebook/dp/B01HX364JW/… It is not about investing but about money or monetary policy.

7:33 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Are you sure that is right?

@FaheemMitha No. If you don't know about fundamentals of company. Yes otherwise.

@PrabhjotSingh I see.
So this is a familiarity issue?
Meaning, you already know the company is good, so buy more of the same?

@FaheemMitha This is a critique of money taking capitalist and socialist views.

@PrabhjotSingh I don't follow.

Brb
@FaheemMitha If a company is fundamentally sound at 90, it would be good company at 70, or 50 too.
@FaheemMitha This was related to The value of money. Wrong reply by me.

8:07 PM
@PrabhjotSingh odd, here it gives me the option of changing when sounds occur. Given, I haven't actually tried it to see if the options work...

@derobert This is possible if I am 1 rep user on meta site.

@FaheemMitha If you trust your analysis that says the company is worth $90/share, then if its a buy at $80/share it must be a steal at $70/share. Or your analysis is wrong, of course.
@PrabhjotSingh the sound icon in chat — it's to the left of the "all rooms" and "site rooms" buttons

@derobert Ok.

@FaheemMitha (of course, if it suddenly drops in price... you might want to find out if there is a reason! E.g., SEC announces an investigation for cooking the books probably means you need to revisit your analysis, not buy immediately.)

Oct 31 at 22:03, by Prabhjot Singh
@FaheemMitha I have seen many times, price action precedes bad news.

8:17 PM
Yep.

@derobert Your reply is very good in fact. People spent years to find that.

8:41 PM
@derobert Reasons can be hard to find.
@derobert Apparently you're also an expert in investing?

8:55 PM
@FaheemMitha Volume is more important than reasons.

@PrabhjotSingh I'm not sure I know what you mean.

@FaheemMitha if a stock goes up / down with heavy volumes, you must follow the trend. This is the very basis of momentum investing / trading.

@PrabhjotSingh Follow it how?

@FaheemMitha if average volume is 1000 shares traded (for 20 days average ), if stock goes up or down with say ten times volume, this could be a trend for 20 days.

@PrabhjotSingh Ok. So?

9:02 PM
@FaheemMitha so if it went up wirh heavy volume, it would go up for most of the days in next 20 days.
@FaheemMitha and good news are possible after this.
PC Jeweller Reverses Losses On Heavy Volumes
Everything is factored in the price.

@PrabhjotSingh Yes, I see.
@PrabhjotSingh I don't think I quite got that sentence.

@FaheemMitha see historical data for 1 month in nseindia.com/live_market/dynaContent/live_watch/get_quote/…
Trade snapshot, company information and Then Historical Data for 1 month.

@PrabhjotSingh Cipla is down right now.

@FaheemMitha I don't track this. But if you see its full fiscal numbers, sales were flat. This is bad for stock. Now this went down after weak Q2 numbers.

@PrabhjotSingh Yes, I know why it went down.

9:16 PM
Sales were flat in Q2 numbers too.

It's kind of stressful for sales/profits to have to keep increasing for the stock price to stay up.

Don't worry about zydus cadila, cipla, Aurobindo pharma, Sun pharma. Quality atocks. Plus these are exporters. See exchange rate.

@PrabhjotSingh Yes, well, Cipla said the exchange rate thing didn't really help them. For whatever reason.
Cipla is actually a pretty good stock to bet on, if you want to bet on something.

@FaheemMitha if sales are flat or OPM keep sliding, stock will come down. Your point is good but grow organically or by acquisitions. Bottomline is growth.

@PrabhjotSingh OPM?
Nothing grows forever, though.

9:23 PM
@FaheemMitha Crude oil is used for many raw materials in pharma. Brent was at 82 dollar. Thankfully come down at 70 today . Seven months low touched.

@PrabhjotSingh Is it really so important?

@FaheemMitha Operating Profit Marrgin.

@PrabhjotSingh ok

@FaheemMitha Higher crude prices are bad for fertilizer, pharma, chemical, paint and auto companies. Oil marketing companies too.
Aviation companies.
@FaheemMitha Do you really want a book now ?

@PrabhjotSingh Pardon?

10:07 PM
@FaheemMitha I mean Graham's book contains most of the ideas. And some ideas we discussed here I haven't read in books.

@PrabhjotSingh Well, different people have different perspectives. And I suspect the Indian market differs from the US market in some ways.

@FaheemMitha commodities prices, wages and demand . These are linked directly to profits.
@FaheemMitha Agreed. But price behavior isn't.

@PrabhjotSingh Yes, of course. But sensitivity varies.
Medical facilities are a classic example. Indian hospitals are wonderful at robbing people. They're great, considered as a business.

@FaheemMitha Yes, Graham is relevant but not 100 percent. Some stocks don't move at all despite good results.

@PrabhjotSingh I meant sensitivity to changes in the price of oil, for example.

10:15 PM
@FaheemMitha yes, they use gasoline, crude and shale recently.
US has become now net exporter of oil.

I would not have thought a pharma company would be super sensitive to the price of oil.

Even last price decrease has been because of rising crude inventories in US.
@FaheemMitha Sales are flat. This is the main reason. Crude oil may be one of reasons. Or I could be wrong.

@PrabhjotSingh I don't know. I expect Cipla have some idea. But I haven't read their reports.

@FaheemMitha you can see full year sales growth. This was flat too.

@PrabhjotSingh Yes, I see. What service are you using?

10:23 PM
@FaheemMitha What service are you using? Didn't get you ?

@PrabhjotSingh I mean the web page you are looking at for Cipla.

@FaheemMitha I won 't lie to you. I don't track this stock. I saw your message and found results on Business Standard webpage.

@PrabhjotSingh Ok. Can you link to what you looked at?
So, what do you think about DHFL?
Seems to be trading at a very reasonable valuation, though I don't know anything about the company.

Tim
why so many bullies on my posts?

10:28 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Thanks.

@FaheemMitha never say this again.

Tim
when bullies happen often, they can become a norm

@PrabhjotSingh Why?

Tim
oh I am sorry, this room is for indian companies and insurance

@FaheemMitha why don't you understand ? Broker has told us that they moved this stock from category A to D. This means they and their big client won't buy this.

10:31 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Why is that?

@FaheemMitha I think they fear housing finance companies would face cash shortage in ILFS problem.

@PrabhjotSingh Do you think that is likely?

@FaheemMitha Fund that sold their paper still holds paper of worth 800 crore.

@PrabhjotSingh I don't know what that means. But it sounds familiar.
You probably talked about it earlier.

@FaheemMitha But this can lead to lower home prices.
@FaheemMitha paper means Bonds.

10:36 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Ok.
I should remind myself what they are.

@FaheemMitha I should have written bonds.

@PrabhjotSingh Do you think something like this is useful? capitaline.com/Demo/Plus.aspx
But it's expensive.

@FaheemMitha useful but very expansive.

@PrabhjotSingh Yes, very expensive.
Maybe more useful for a real professional investor.

@FaheemMitha Professional investors keep diaries with tgem and jot down results or other information if and when needed.

@PrabhjotSingh 75?

oh I am sorry, this room is for indian companies and insurance

@PrabhjotSingh Oh, ok. Do you subscribe to it?

@FaheemMitha I never purchased it.

10:46 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Oh. Is that the magazine which has the list of the companies and stuff that you earlier talked about?

My friends who are active traders fetch this me for free.

@FaheemMitha yes, spreadsheet type information.

@PrabhjotSingh Ok.

@FaheemMitha housing finance companies' lower share prices would benefit home buyers by decreasing demand.

10:52 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Yes, but is the relevant to whether or not to buy the shares?

@FaheemMitha At this time big investors are not buying thses stocks.
You see DHFL came down to 340, i guess. Management clarified it went up to 430 that day. Why this kept sliding if there was not a problem. Bond selling alone can't beat a stock so hard, imo.
@FaheemMitha PE ratio is very attractive.

@PrabhjotSingh The question is what the long term growth prospects are. And I don't know the answer to that.
