12:09 AM
@Rubiksmoose Does specificity apply?
Is one more or less specific than the other?

12:36 AM
In today's ToA game: we leveled up from winning a track meet.

12:46 AM
@V2Blast That sounds fun. How did it play out? Who won?

Ben
5e Clarification... Half orc's Savage Attacks = Barb Brutal Critical?
I understand that brutal critical allows for additional dice at higher levels

Seems like they'd stack
Well, you'd have extra dice for each effect.

Ben
Yeah, potentially. In the case of a 9th level half-orc barb wielding a great axe, they roll 4d12 damage
But I'm just making the comparison between the class and the racial ability. Just seems... I dunno… off, that a half orc fighter has the ability that a dwarf barb has to wait nine levels for

1:04 AM
@MikeQ We tried to negotiate with a goblin tribe to get the shield guardian control amulet they had... and somehow a party member proposed a track meet. We talked to each of the nearby tribes, and somehow made it happen. We won 5 of the 8 events, and got each tribe to wager something.
Then the goblin queen tried to back out of the deal, so we planned to sneak into her tent at night and take the amulet we were promised. Our ranger (who has a magic dagger that lets him cast Dimension Door once a day) decided to try and do that then teleport away... but when he snuck in, he saw a figure near the queen's bed and found the queen dead. that's where the session ended.

1:23 AM
I'm curious how the meet was run: skill challenges? Something else?

Ben
@V2Blast GASP!

Ben
1:44 AM
Potentially going to be joining a 5e lvl 20 one-shot over the Christmas period
Never had a player over level 7... so that should be a jump haha
Would there be any considerations I should take into account when choosing a pc for this game? Like, "choose a class I'm familiar with" or similar?

@Ben Playing a high-level prepared caster may involve a lot of bookkeeping. Other than that... It's a one-shot. Choose a build/concept that seems fun.

Tier 4 is pretty crazy. I'd definitely choose something you're familiar with, and talk with the other players beforehand. It's easy in T4 to see big disparities between PCs if you're not all on the same page. (I.e. if it's 4 other straight-20 characters and you want to multiclass 15/5, you're going to notice it.)

@nitsua60: Yep! Had Athletics/Acrobatics/Dex checks as appropriate for the various events, with advantage/bonuses based on the inevitable cheating

I might suggest picking the capstone ability you like best and grab that--it may be your only chance to see it in play =)

Yeah, for level-20 oneshots, go nuts. Think of the high-level class feature or ability or spell you've always wanted to use - now you can

1:50 AM
I've always wanted to try Dr20: just be a mammoth. "Sorry, you'll have to do 350 dmg per turn to catch my attention. At which point I'll unleash L7 and L8 spells on you."

Ben
In all honesty I was thinking of either going with my foundation PC - Dragonborn Fighter, a Minotaur Storm Barb (from Xan's) or making a plain Sorcerer (based on the Golden Sun "Adept" characters)
I haven't played a caster until just recently, so I'm hesitant to go with the last one
I think it's little sad that everytime I see the word "Adept" my brain defaults to the DMS that I work with.

Ben
2:19 AM
Actually, in the case of the fighter, at level 20 they have 4 attacks (from Extra Attack) per turn. Would it just be easier to roll all 4 at the same time?
It'd probably be down to personal preference I guess

Ask the DM. Some don't allow it in cases where you have the chance to attack multiple targets.

Ben
@MikeQ True. Just from my experience, it can take time to get through all the attacks sometimes. Even with 2 attacks, it was a bit time consuming

Yes, I prefer grouping the dice rolls to save time.

Ben
Even just to determine the number of hits maybe. 3/4 hits, roll damage.
even assign how many hits to which targets.
I think that would be a worthwhile tactic
Good-period-of-the-day-or-night to all! @Ash @KorvinStarmast @illustro

@Ben Central time US (I'll need to figure out UTC +5 or +6 in a moment) and on Tuesday nights for me is a good start ...

2:28 AM
US Central = UTC -6

@MikeQ Yeah, we just came off of DST

Ben
So that would mean you're 4 hours behind me? so... 8.30am?
Timezone math is not something I excel at. It should be simple but there's something about it that I just can never quite follow

@Ben For me the speed-up comes when I roll attack+dmg dice at the same time. I can rip through 4 attacks pretty quickly that way. (Though I have a standing understanding with my most-frequent GM that I'll actually roll all attacks at once even if there might be separate targeting--dice are color-coded into attack groups and are always read left-to-right.)

Some DMs may object in cases where the different attack rolls have different effects, because it's like picking and choosing rather than rolling an unknown

@Ben Ben, what city do you live in?

Ben
2:33 AM
@KorvinStarmast Townsville. I'm in AEST, which is UTC +10.
We aren't on DST

@Ben then you and I are 14 hours different

Ben
@MikeQ Oh sneaky edit! Lol.

I had a D&D group some years ago, 3.5e, my only ever favored soul, break up due to two being in Oz and our clock problems became too hard. Sad face me ...

Ben
Yes, that makes sense

@Ben OK, what days of week are good for you? If we only do a couple of hours of play, I can be up here early AM now and again ...
@Ben Also, I assume this is for FATE with BESW

Ben
2:36 AM
Generally weekdays - tues to fri

@Ben so Mon to thurs for me?

Ben
I can do Saturday mornings, up until ~2pm my time
@KorvinStarmast Yeah

What are you folks planning?

@Ben, OK, uh let me see what works ...
afk ...

Ben
@MikeQ Fate game

2:37 AM
Can I join or are the seats taken

Ben
@BESW asked for schedules, so we're just figuring that out atm. I don't think we have any hard yes/no's yet, so let us know your availability :)
BESW are both in the same timezone
3

Tuesday Evening my time is you Wednesday morning, right?

@KorvinStarmast I think so. Australia is both upside-down and in the future.

Ben
@MikeQ And the apocalypse hasn't arrived yet, but when it does, we'll let you know

@MikeQ Which is kinda cool, now that we think of it. "No matter where ya go, there you are!"

Ben
2:43 AM
@KorvinStarmast And yes, Lol. My Saturday morning is your Friday evening
trogdor and Miniman are also in the same timezone as well, as BESW and I

Maybe I should ask, when is this good for all others who have answered up?

If it's Mon-Fri, I can probably make the 22:00-12:00 window UTC. Assume Sat-Sun are free for me.

Ben
Personally I feel like Saturday morning/Friday night would be the best bet, just as that is usually the time when everyone is not working/most likely available haha

How is the game's theme/tone/setting decided? Does that happen at the beginning of the session or before?

Ben
@MikeQ By my understanding it happens as a "group activity"

3:10 AM
For a one-shot, it usually gets a bit more structured than for a long campaign.
Just because usually most of the first session would be just figuring out the nature of the campaign and building characters.
I suggesting using one of the Worlds of Adventure which has expedited character creation options.
Masters of Umdaar is a personal favorite.

user15026
@Ben waves

Ben
@Ash Mexican, ocean, or other? Or a combination of all? Hehe

user15026
Yes.

Ben
Good answer

@BESW I found a list of adventure summaries. Umdaar sounds fun. How do we get more info?

3:17 AM
You can download the adventures individually for pay-what-you-want-including-free from DriveThruRPG, via the links in the page you found.

3:38 AM
Hey folks, quick question. If there is a community personality (popular youtuber for example) is it okay to link a video and quote some of their wisdom in answer to a question?

@Mattamue Sure. Just be sure that the answer "stands alone." That is, you're quoting enough (and describing the source's expertise well enough) that if the link dies or were pulled, the answer's still a quality one.

Roger, thanks man.

I know it's never going to happen, but gosh a [forum] shortlink would be nice. (Cf. rpg.meta.stackexchange.com/q/6350/23970)

Ben
4:09 AM
is there a "common practice" for awarding bounties - specifically for "exemplary answers"? Or is it just a case of "your rep - you do what you want"

I'm not aware of any widely-held or -recommended practices.

Ben
Fair enough. Was just curious :)

Some people (in this room) around this time of year start making a list and holding off on bounties until Hatmas, since giving a bounty or (for the recipient) rep-capping are often part of a hat-trigger.

Ben
I always forget about hatmas lol

@nitsua60 the closest thing I have personally done to that is delaying getting a gold badge I was going to get anyway until hatmas
XD
sadly I don't have one ready this year
but last year,... last year was great actually
I did get that gold badge hat, but then there were a ton of secret hats I got
I want more of that

4:23 AM
I fell off the wagon last year and didn't get a bunch of my hats into last year's photo album.

I can't decide my Hatmas regimen until I see the hats.

You and greener had some fun ones, though.

@nitsua60 I don't think I put many of mine in the album either, I just like that I had em
oh wait
I did put a bunch in
I didn't remember doing that many
that might be all the ones I got
not entirely sure though
@nitsua60 I think you put up a decent number of hats last year actually
there I go actually actualling again
haaaaaaaats though, can't wait
every year around October or November I get all excited about it
today is that day I guess

@trogdor yeah, but I think I had a half-dozen or so that I never took pictures of.

oooooh
ok
ah man, greener killed it last year for sure
I had forgotten

4:33 AM
I dunno... BESW's got a real thing going. Maybe one of this year's "young guns" will surprise us with an interesting take on the project.

Ben
5:02 AM
New, more appropriate profile pic for hatmas. Lol
Though it would likely put a slight damper on my reputation... haha

5:15 AM
@nitsua60 I like his gimmicks but I think greener had better pictures

3 hours ago, by Ben
BESW are both in the same timezone
And I**
I only just realised that error lol

3 hours later…
8:43 AM
@KorvinStarmast That's kind (and the sentiment is very much appreciated), but don't go too much out of your way on my behalf. If it's not something you're already well versed in, then only look into it if doing so will interest you too.

@trogdor seems teardown of the 2017 winterbash site has started. Scripts are starting to fail

@Derpy oh I was just looking at the post

2 hours later…
10:30 AM
@Ben going by various theories of BESW being multiple people that's not necessarily incorrect

Ben
@doppelgreener shh! You're going to ruin it!
:P

11:13 AM
Lol

11:41 AM
@Tiggerous On another box, I have a few OSRs downloaded, let me get to them and give you some feedback.

2 hours later…
1:41 PM
@doppelgreener I was looking at that chat message and thinking the same. (My actual thought was more like “I thought BESW was canonically four, not two people” – I but I was too tired to go for posting that.)

@Anaphory That's my theory, at least.

1 hour later…
3:02 PM
So dark

3:16 PM
I am back from my vacation. Tell me everything I missed in the last week

@SirCinnamon Probably the biggest two things are that we are renaming to DnD.SE and that there has been a policy shift that answers are only allowed in comments now.
3
Nothing major though

@Rubiksmoose Wish I had seen that meta, would have voted for dnd5e.SE

@SirCinnamon Aw man that would have been better. Why must you have taken vacation at such an inopportune and turbulent time?

@Rubiksmoose Had to meet darth vader

@SirCinnamon Well usually that doesn't work out too well for people. But I'm happy you still seem to be in the land of the living. Unless you are a force ghost of course.

3:29 PM
@Rubiksmoose I threw my friend under the bus to survive

@SirCinnamon ah ok well no judgement here. We've all sacrificed loved ones to astronomically powerful magic-wielding warriors at one point or another.

@Rubiksmoose In the end I got a nice photo!

@SirCinnamon Heck yeah! Nothing beats a great vaca photo.

@Rubiksmoose My first time at Disneyland so I got many great photos

That makes sense. That place is basically a photo-taking trap lol

3:41 PM
@Rubiksmoose Got away without spending the 90 dollars it would have cost me to buy their photos though

@SirCinnamon Yeesh that is insane.

@Rubiksmoose It's an expensive place. Which is what I expected. It's also very fun though

4:06 PM
Huh, it was quiet last night it seems.

4:23 PM
I love that question about hitting a coatl with another coatl
I think I'd DM that magical creatures count as magical for a number of minutes equal to its CR.

If familiars count as magic weapons, that would make the Pact of the Blade warlock even more obsolete

well... you'd be non proficient and it'd deal 1d4+str damage, max

What if you're a hexblade? Could you hit someone with your sprite familiar using CHA instead?

no... unless you have tavern brawler, in which case, I'll allow it.
Is this question properly stackable in its current form?

Q: My quest's mcguffin is an NPC. How do I make her interesting?

mklingenSo the main quest of my campaign is to locate and save a princess, who is true heir to the throne of the realm (and was hidden Oedipus style with a goat herd), and defeat an evil sorcerer so she can take her rightful place. The locating and saving part was pretty cool, just like any other D&D qu...

@goodguy5 I suspect it falls into the "Idea Generation" category of questions that don't really work here.
There might be a way to make it workable, but it'll definitely require some workshopping with the OP.

4:37 PM
Is there a gem of stackability hidden within the question?
Like, "How can I avoid boring, plot-crucial NPCs?"

@goodguy5 Doubt it

oh well.
what's the macro to invite someone to chat?
<chat>?

Generally I think that "How do I write ___ better?" questions are unstackable on RPG.SE
@goodguy5 In a comment, it's [chat]

that's the one. thanks
Well, that escalated quickly

Out of curiosity, are there rules or discussions about swapping ability scores in 5e? e.g. Changing a spellcaster's casting ability modifier, or changing the racial ability score bonuses, etc.

@MikeQ I recall a question where someone wanted to make a strength based caster, and all the answers saying that's pretty imbalanced
but I cant find it

Oh I remember that one. It was about a homebrew class.
I'm asking about existing classes, but using different stats. For simplicity' sake, assume physical stats can be swapped for physical, and mental for mental, in terms of abilities that rely on those stats. Like a bard that uses INT as its casting modifier. Or a WIS paladin.

@SirCinnamon Yeah - rule of thumb I tend to use in my own houserulings - if something uses a mental stat, it's usually safe to migrate to another mental stat. If it uses a physical stat, it can probably move to another physical (probably)
In Pathfinder, though; Cha->Int is a side-grade for most things, though Cha->Wis would be a straight upgrade there. Similarly, almost anything that goes away from Strength is probably an upgrade.

@Tiggerous Swords and Wizardry, Swords and Wizardry White Box, and Mazes and Minotaurs are all good OSR kits.

4:56 PM
I'm not talking about PF. Swapping ability scores like that wouldn't work in PF because not all the ability scores are used evenly. Just limiting to 5e for now.

@Delioth Yeah I feel like in 5e giving a class too much based on CON would be strong... like attacking with CON would mean you could be a really good tank and damage dealer

@Tiggerous Note: Even though Mazes and Minotaurs is a little bit of a parody of the great edition wars, it actually fits together pretty well. Enjoy.

@MikeQ I've found it works pretty okay. It might not be perfect for all play, but it works well enough I've found. But yeah - I figured 5e so I was trying to keep a bit low

@Tiggerous I have read some stuff on OSR boards about Lamentations of the Flame Princess, but find the two S&W products to fit well enough.
What I like about Mazes and Minotaurs is that it points to a play style and genre that is basically "Greek Mythology" so the setting has some anchors there.

@Delioth Ok. Are there potential issues if the class's spellcasting ability mod is changed, but the proficient saves are not? Or does it balance itself out because the character gets more decent saves rather than 1 or 2 really good ones?

5:03 PM
@MikeQ I foresee issues with swapping ability scores personally. Mental stats are not uniformly useful and allowing a swap would allow a character to gain a small power boost. Also, if you allow multicasting it could open up a lot of powerful synergy that wasn't there before.

@Rubiksmoose I'm not 100% sure about that first point, but you're right about multiclassing
An INT-based cleric could dip 1-2 levels of wizard and become kinda ridiculous

Like I feel that if you allowed a paladin to swap WIS for CHA casting stat (and the rest of their abilities) that would really put them at an advantage if the campaign does not have a social skill presence. WIS is generally a lot more useful than CHA for optimization outside of those class abilities that would be tied to it.

That would be a bigger deal in 3.5/PF than in 5e, but I suppose there is a small benefit in terms of distribution of spell saving throws

@Rubiksmoose It's all about the perception score yo

@GreySage and WIS saving throws because those effects are nasty.
@MikeQ I did say "small power boost". WIS is hands down the best of the mental stats to optimise if you don't have class features that interact with the other two.
Basically it would allow for hyper-specialization of the character which would result in a power boost potentially based on what they decide to specialize in. But MC is the area where I think you will run into major issues allowing this.

5:12 PM
@Tiggerous Also, see "Matthew J. Finch "A quick primer for old school gaming" as a way to cross the divide conceptually. It's a decent intro.

5:36 PM
@Bloodcinder Nice answer, and a nice illustration of why I don't care for Tieflings as PCs in my campaigns. However, if the Planescape setting is the one they release next year, I'll probably review my position on that.

@KorvinStarmast Even if you just say no variants?
I think default tiefling is alright for a playable race
winged seems almost gamebreaking

Was Winged Tiefling released after aarakocra?

@Yuuki I think so...

So they released a race with restricted flight because they figured it was going to be super-powerful and then threw all that out the window and made Winged tieflings?

Looks that way

5:48 PM
WotC: "ehhh we'll just make the DM sort it all out."

@KorvinStarmast Tiefling without the winged variant is no more gamebreaking than any other race. They make good sorcerers/bards
Wings have all the same problems free low level flight always has :(

6:03 PM
@SirCinnamon It's nothing to do with game breaking. It's a matter of taste.
I also detest bloat.

@KorvinStarmast I dont really follow... you dont like the aesthetic?

1 hour later…
7:25 PM
We haven't had much problem with Tieflings in our campaigns but people seem to still treat them with some reservation (I mean, OOC)
With the usual complaints being that they're just a bit bland (5e in particular stresses out that the "tiefling condition" is mainly cosmetic, which some people in my circles consider a missed opportunity) or that their only interesting plot side is playing a victim of discrimination which gets old fast.
Or playing a Drizzt-like edgy hero.

The one I play has a begrudging rivalry with the paladin
or rather, the other way around.

Rivalry with the chivalry, eh?

yea, but my character is just tryinta live his life and make up for the sins of his parents.

Meanwhile, this demon hunter is always giving me the side-eye

@kviiri Sounds more like a lack creativity on the PCs part, rather than a problem with the race.

@GreySage The line there is rather fuzzy though.
You can basically say that about any complaint about any race, ever, but ultimately the players are the ones who are supposed to get something out of playing the race. And if they don't see any opportunities for that apart from trite stereotypes, something is clearly amiss.
Then again, I think people are too harsh on "trite stereotypes" in general.

7:40 PM
One of these days, I'm going to run a game where the drow are the good, above ground guys and the light-elves (high elves) are the bad, underground guys.
Why does the race that spends the most time underground have the darkest complexion?!

@goodguy5 It reflects their profound aaaaaanggggst

They don't have angst by default. Angst is earned
Really, though. That's not how pigment works

@goodguy5 Camouflage?

Drow should be upsettingly pale
it's already dark, they don't need to be darker

@goodguy5 But everything down there also sees in the dark

7:42 PM
also sees in black and white
and that's what dark clothes are for

@goodguy5 Yeah! so black on black is hidden, right?

I'm going to quote BESW's law here

Then africans should be sand-colored

we dont evolve to wear clothes

and rain-forest residents should be... uh... shrub colored
the nords.... oh... that makes sense

7:44 PM
But anyway, I personally encourage my players to err towards more generic or even clichéd characters at first.
Oct 19 at 8:00, by BESW
I'm inclined to go with "You're thinking about it harder than the devs did."

@goodguy5 This killed me

good
your amusement made me giggle

@goodguy5 At least up here, people in general are of the sort that get a tan in the sun!

right, because that's how pigment works, generally
It takes a lot of work to make that much melanin.

But humans didnt evolve colour for camouflage but to protect from the sun right? being the apex predator in almost every environment, humans never evolved camouflage of any sort. You could say something similar about elves but I dunno, in the DnD world I don't know if humanoids are the apex predators....

7:46 PM
and to be actually black (or dark purple, depending on implementation), like drow are, would take a mft of biological work
They should be pale
like angler fish

alternate hot take: its actually just makeup that they all wear

@goodguy5 Their bodies pull the energy for that extra work from Lolth, magically

@GreySage this is the best explanation, that I think could exist.
If you cut them off from that energy, what happens? What do Drow raised in an antimagic bubble look like?

@goodguy5 Are angler fish pale?

@SirCinnamon They're pale in a "your skin doesn't really have pigment and you look like something out of a nightmare" kind of way

7:48 PM
@SirCinnamon Is "Giant Anglerfish" a thing in DnD? It should be

@goodguy5 Ugh transparent skin drow
now THERES a creepy idea
@GreySage Aren't mimics basically the anglerfish of the land

According to google images anglerfish are mostly light brown

Sick! RT @TerrifyingPosts: Transparent Skin
is that sfw?

is it real?

it's definitely weird for work
dunno, but that's what Drow would look like in my head

7:51 PM
well, it's definitely unpleasant!

^

@SirCinnamon If other races aren't biased against Drow now, they will be after this.

I imagine the black skin/light hair probably is a lolth thing as opposed to an evolutionary thing

that's fair

since otherwise they dont seem particularly adapted to the underdark

7:53 PM
though, I will be adding an antimagic drow colony

or distinct from regular elves

@SirCinnamon Umbilical cords (at least, the 3 I've handled) are transparent.
So we do have the ability to make transparent flesh....

@nitsua60 placenta too i suppose

@SirCinnamon I think this is accurate, the coloration is a mark that they broke away from the main elven pantheon/society

@GreySage lieka pseudo mark of kain?

7:55 PM
@goodguy5 I don't remember if it was a voluntary thing or a curse thing, although that probably gets changed every edition.

@GreySage varies by setting, too

Ok, 5e PHB says that the Drow are descended from an earlier race of dark-skinned elves, so they were dark skinned/light haired before turning evil and following Lolth

wait a damned minute, the dark elves were cast underground?!

Maybe the Drow look is based on a set of recessive genes, and so has been bred out of mainstream elves, while surviving among the Drow due to a more limited gene pool?

@goodguy5 Well yeah, otherwise light would get into the smelting mix and then you'd have medium elves.

8:03 PM
this all feels racist and I think I'm going to have to stick with the lolth magic situation

@goodguy5 Yeah I was thinking something similar. Like, ALL the elves who followed Lolth happened to be dark skinned?

I'm trying really hard to think of a way that doesn't make my skin crawl.
now I need to read up on drow history

@GreySage ಠ_ಠ

Alright. I've come up with what I think is a reasonable explanation.

Fact (as in, the lore as it exists):
The schism happened when elves cast out those who were greedy, evil, malicious, etc; they were referred to as to "dark elvenfolk".

Say that this is/was a colloquial term. that referred to the color of their heart and not their skin. It was through their worship and service to Lolth that their skin grew as dark as their hearts. (or some other flowery word crap).

Ehh....
Still...

8:11 PM
I agree. Still not great.
But at least it's to match Lolth.
Alternatively, go further back in history.

Elves are closely related to fey.

Good, light fey make light elves.

Bad, dark fey make drow.
and the split happened not amongst elves, but among fey
still... not ideal

I dunno, the whole thing of linking skin color to anything bothers me.

@Yuuki Does it bother you to link skin color to genetics?

The third option is to make Lolth and Drow all upsettingly translucent

@GreySage No, I said "anything".

@goodguy5 Option 4: Everybody's skin is transparent!
lol

8:19 PM
gross
I'm guessing that genitals are much less exciting when the skin is see-through

*much more horrifying

5th option: it's an evolutionary trait - there's more radiation underground (due to radioactive materials and such), so elves with more pigment (==darker skin) survived more, so the gene pool drifted that way over time

@Rubiksmoose Option 5: Everyone is transparent and now we have to deal with endless questions about how advantage works when everyone is invisible.

then why are svirfneblin so pale?

Does my party need to roll for radiation sickness when underground?

It takes a little handwaving to say that these pigments actually help block hard radiation (and not just a little help with UV and mostly useless for the rest), and there could be multiple different ways of coping with the issue - Drow ended up with dark skin, Svirfneblin ended up with [more copies of genes so random mutation isn't as bad, a literally thicker skin to help block it without pigment, etc]

I mean I feel like any justification based on real genetics or science is doomed to fail here and/or be really convoluted.

8:23 PM
And Darkfolk, for that matter. or uh.... the dwarves... uh.......
what are the drow-dwarves called? can change size?

Not that it isn't worth trying though

Duergar

ty

Which IIRC have dark skin
Hey, wait a second, forgotten realms wiki says that svirfneblin are dark skinned

I thought they (duregar) had bronze skin.
o.O WHAAAAAAAAAAA?!

8:25 PM
Yeah, apparently Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd Edition described them as dark & gnarled (Svirfneblin/Deep Gnomes)

I dunno, "Lolth made dark elves have dark skin because she's super-goth" sounds better than "Lolth made dark elves have dark skin to reflect the darkness in their hearts".

And Duergar are referred to other places as "Grey dwarves"

@Yuuki I get the feeling that you're not looking for a "reasonable explanation" of why the Drow's skin is dark then. What you're uncomfortable with is the lower-level assumption that an entire (sub)species can be "evil", which cannot be resolved by any explanation. Changing the look of the Drow may get rid of unpleasant real-world overtones, but it doesn't get rid of that assumption. The only way you're gonna get out of this is by making Drow society less uniform.

whatever. same thing.

point being "dark skin because demon magic"
And I think we're all brushing off the fact that Drow society is matriarchal. so... they get points for that.

So there's definitely a basis for (at least sapient) deep-earth races to have dark skin from a biological perspective in the Forgotten realms

8:29 PM
@goodguy5 Murderous, genocidal points, but still

@ACuriousMind It's not so much the "entire race is evil" so much as the "race has black/dark skin because they're evil" part.

For me it's "an entire race happens to be dark and also evil"

I think one problem with writing lore and fluff is that it's hard to avoid an authoritative voice when you're worldbuilding.
So when you say "it was through their worship and service to Lolth that their skin grew as dark as their hearts", that could easily be just folklore and what the common villager believes but might not be true. But it's easy to fall into that trap of "DM said it so it has to be true and therefore having dark skin is a sign that you're evil and worship Lolth fervently".

yea. good point
also also. Shouldn't there be an occasional albino Drow?

@goodguy5 Nah, the Lolth Energy(tm) starts in the womb

8:36 PM
antimagic shell

haha

@SirCinnamon Not in the least, unless one is in a planescape campaign.
@goodguy5 Yes, there should, and I saw an albino Doberman pinscher a few weeks ago ... it was quite the surprise.

There are a few albino african americans in my hometown.

@SirCinnamon It may just be me, but that was that whole "goth" thing going around a few decades ago that I found particularly annoying. I think emo was its nephew. For some reason, my brain associates the tiefling PC with both Goth and Emo. My other problem is the whole horns and tail thing: suspension of disbelief in terms of them "fitting in" at all in the default setting takes too much whiskey to generate.
@SirCinnamon I also have a hard time with gnomes ... we already have halflings and dwarves, enough already.

8:47 PM
halflings are small humans
gnomes are small elves

@SirCinnamon But as I noted above, that really is a matter of taste. The whole "gustibus non disputandum est" applies here.

gnomes are horrible monstrosities from beyond the Far Realm
Halflings are still cool

gnomes > kinder

@trogdor Reverse this

@goodguy5 Gnomes are lawn ornaments. I ask that @trogdor burninate all of them.

8:48 PM

@SirCinnamon looc llits era sgnilflaH siht

@goodguy5 now now, don't bring up Kender round here :P

Ugly

yea. I really dislike the art for 5e halflings

@goodguy5 Yeah, I don't like German kids either.

8:49 PM
@goodguy5 ugh, I didn't mean specific to 5e but sheesh yeah that,....

note to self.

have an npc warn the PCs. "don't go there, it's infested with gnomes"

have it be sentient garden gnomes. a la gravity falls

@SirCinnamon Not to mention her being pretentious: playing left handed lute, like she's the next Jimi Hendrix. gag

she's just pretending to play
she's not using perform, she's using bluff

How pretendtious

Not to mention it's a bad take on a 12 stringed guitar ... gag again @Rubiksmoose Nice one. :)

8:51 PM
did I count that right? is it 9 strings?

my brain kept seeing that and knowing something was wrong with it, but I just kept rationalizing it as "pretentious".

I didn't "Get it" until kor pointed it out

@goodguy5 Yeah, you did. 9 strings

@goodguy5 hahaha stupid brain autocorrect.

it's like a weird double banjo.
4+4+1
what the hell, 9 strings
I'm more upset by this than I feel I should be

8:53 PM
It's ok, you're just a little high strung. Just bump that heating pad up a couple of notches ;)

Easier to play than the bodily acoustic Antagonistic Undecagonstring

alright. ding ding, zug zug. work done

@goodguy5 huzzah!
