I think the coriolis force should exist only if the ball flies off the rotating frame.
Because without that the ball would be rotating along with observer at rotating frame and the observer will see the ball in straight trajectory and the ground observer would see the ball takung the curved paths.
Which is contraction to my read book.
Am i right or i have a misconception?

why is life disappointing

@AlNejati Is that a question or rhetoric? :P

genuine question

Is there any reason why it wouldn't be possible to find a vector potential, $\vec{A}$ for $B(\vec{r}) \propto \vec{r}$?

10:36 AM
@NoahP wouldn't that magnetic field have a non-zero divergence?

How so? @JohnRennie

@NoahP the field lines all start at the origin and radiate outwards

Ahhh ok, thanks!

Can you please help me solve the problem on QM that I've sent tomorrow ?

@ostrichguy Sorry, no. I'm preparing for a test

@Chair seriously? That's one heck of an unanswerable question.

Kaal or Kāla (Sanskrit: काल [kɑːˈlə]; Tamil: காலம் ( listen) kaalam or kaala) is a word used in Sanskrit to mean "time". The Tamil word kaalam refers to duration (an interval) in time. It is also the name of a deity in which sense it is not always distinguishable from kāla meaning "black". It is often used as one of the various names or forms of Yama. Kaal/Kaala is also referred to the concept of Spacetime. In the Yogic System the concept of SpaceTime was referred to as one word rather than two separate concepts of Space (darkness) and Time. == Etymology == Monier-Williams's widely used Sanskrit...

user351417
@EmilioPisanty Okee I'm not an expert in this and it's all stuff I've read myself so tell me if I have a completely messed up idea, but isn't it that question describing 2 degenerate layers being split due to the Zeeman effect? After that the photons wouldn't necessarily be in squeezed states but the polarization depends on the change in $m$, right? So if there's a change of $\Delta m =\pm 1$ you get polarized light perpendicular to the field and if $\Delta m=0$ you get light parallel to the field?

user351417
I thought something of the sort would make an appropriate answer, so I left that open.

user351417
I didn't really understand why your comment implied that the question's too broad... perhaps the difference is that I interpreted that stuff as two degenerate orbits splitting due to the external field with another level being discrete and significantly higher/lower, while you took it as the two levels being degenerate in the first place?

2:19 PM
> isn't it that question describing 2 degenerate layers being split due to the Zeeman effect?
no.
it's specifically saying that those two "layers" are not split.
the only way the question can be made to make sense is if there are more states involved
and the answer will depend on those states: which ones, how many, at what energy, at what coupling, etc etc etc
unless and until the question specifies all of those conditions, the answer will be "sometimes yes, sometimes no", which is completely useless to OP and to any future visitors.
The question as amended in the comments basically asks "Suppose that I have some sort of quantum system doing possibly-quantum stuff. Does quantum stuff happen?"

user351417
hmm yeah, I tend to say 'layers' though 'levels' is the right word. Anyways, it goes back to the interpretation which I described. I think the answer I guessed, which seems similar enough to what you say the answer is, where you discuss the different possibilities/factors is OK; it'd probably help the OP, though I can't imagine future visitors ending up in that state.

user351417
I ignored that stuff in the comments because 1) I had no idea what he was trying to say and 2) It's a comment, not an edit. If that's supposed to be taken seriously, I'd like to see it formally added to the post in a manner which reflects the OP's intent.

This q. says that a group of people want to hold a party for a length such that their 'celebrations' are simultaneous with the impact of a comet on Jupiter in all inertial frames.
My thoughts is that it has to go on forever as some inertial frames move at $c$
but is it really just that?

2:56 PM
I don't think a frame moving at the speed of light is considered an inertial frame

For full clarity: there are no pairs of inertial frames that are moving at the speed of light w.r.t. each other.

I got 4 emails in 1 days with Data Science/ML roles lol

These roles are not in CA lol
one in NYC, one in MD, one in PA, on in Santa Clara (I guess this last one is CA)

It still holds. I keep wondering if X company has any open positions I'd be interested in...almost always somewhere around San Francisco

NYC has a ton of opportunities
tho not as many tech companies
but like Data Science in the financial sector and stuff like that is huge in NYC

Yeah I've seen a good many in the northeast as well

they are all asking for 8 years experience...

does it make sense...someone who has a PhD and 8 years of experience is not looking at a non-director/VP level role imo

is "position" a collective term or countable noun when it refers to job offer? If the professor uses the terms "this position", "the position", "this one position", does he mean he only accepts one applicant among a great number of applicants? Or he just uses these terms symbolically and actually means he wil accept multiple applicants?

I'd say it's normally a single position professionally, but I'm not sure about academically. The ones I saw were generally for one, but I don't think my group had the money for multiple positions

5:02 PM
wow 4 emails and a linked in message
lol

There certainly were professors that seemed to be swimming in money though

rolling in the recruiters...

but if it's a big group including a number of professors?

5:18 PM
Hard to say
But at the end of the day, whether it's 1 position or several, how does that affect you? Would you not apply for a position if you knew there was only 1 open?

I think there are more IT staffing agencies in the area that I'm looking than actual companies

it has been the end of the day

Yeah...so many recruiters...

There are actually some interesting jobs through them, but I don't know if I want to work for a company that doesn't bother to hire its own people

I just wonder how it is possible such a big group with a link designed for applicants uploading applications only accepts one applicant.

5:21 PM
On the bright side, I found a posting for a company looking for someone with computer graphics, solid modeling, physics, and ml knowledge...there can't possibly be that many of us

I mean, I would guess a lot of smaller companies don't have the HR to go through all the applications
My current company also hires through recruiter firms
holy jeez, the emails won't stop
I'm up to 7 now...

Yeah it does take a lot to go through applications. On the other hand, I did see a careers site for a company that I'm fairly sure was written by their marketing department
Wow what did you do over the weekend?

I updated my profiles on a bunch of sites lol

Ahh maybe I should do that. My profile on here is ages old and my linkedin just has job titles

It seems that a majority of recruiters are Indian...(not to sound racist)...is there a reason for this? Is I.T. recruiting really hot in India right now?

Anonymous
5:25 PM
@enumaris Yes

Lots of startups

Especially in the Mumbai and Bangalore areas

But, well, those jobs are a bit risky

hmmm, so are these recruiters contacting me from India?

Anonymous
5:26 PM
Like if the startups don't go well, they might shut down in a few years

Cus the jobs are here in the States

Anonymous
@enumaris Oh, then I can't say for sure. But there probably a lot of India software developers working there who are making new startups (I can't say for certain though)

There's a lot of outsourcing done in India. I've never thought of it, but I suppose recruiters could be outsourcing
I did indeed see a position in Bangalore a couple days ago though

Anonymous
@danielunderwood Yeah, the outsourcing part is true

Also it seems like I've seen a lot in Israel, which isn't something that I expected
(startup positions, not outsourcing)

5:29 PM
I just notice that like at least 50% of the recruiters who contact me have Indian names (or at least Indian sounding names...my apologies if I can't quite tell)
Huawei is apparently aggressively recruiting
I've had 3 recruiters contact me about Huawei
from 3 different recruiting firms
lol

Gotta get that recruiter bonus

2 of them are for positions in China tho
this one for position in Santa Clara...but I did hear that Huawei's development in US is hindered so I dunno if I wanna consider them...

Didn't Huawei have some security controversy recently?

not sure
let me know if you see info on that tho lol

It looks like a government thing. Not sure if it's just politics or not

I feel like SO is mostly software engineering
and I can't really do full on software engineering

5:33 PM
I've looked at it a bit. From what I can tell, it looks like the jobs are a bit better but fewer are listed

Anonymous
@enumaris I meant the job advertisements here

Seems it kind of gets limited to the employers that actually know what SO is

Anonymous
But yeah, SO itself also offers some job positions

Anonymous
From time to time

@Blue yeah, the jobs I've seen were mostly full on software engineering
the jobs advertised here
but I didn't look really deep into it

There are some "remote" jobs

Anonymous
I wonder how they are....the salaries look more or less decent

Oh yeah a lot of those as well
I think it depends on the person and company. I currently have a remote position and I miss interaction with co-workers. And I'm even a pretty introverted person

Anonymous
Yeah, well, a "remote" full-time job wouldn't suit me either. But a remote internship of some sort would be nice for me, to gain some developer experience

Anonymous
5:41 PM
(and I don't want to spend my whole summer on a software development job either :P)

Anonymous
I worked for a couple weeks (an unpaid internship) in a local data science company....it was pretty nice. The only problem was travelling there regularly (at least when uni is on)

I think I'd pretty much be fine with a "remote" job
depends on the job tho
names of people who contacted me today: Tom, Savita, Upendra, Amit, Vagish, Amit (2), Steve, Shankar

Anonymous
7 Indian names :P

5:56 PM
XD
wait, you mean 6?
Unless you're claiming Tom or Steve...
Looks like I should politely reject the Huawei recruiter...

@enumaris Oh, I thought you meant 2 Amits other than the first XD

It's the second Amit lol
I needed a distinguishing feature to make the name unique

You should write a recruiter bot that parses profiles and generates recruiting letters
Or maybe I should

6:06 PM
Only if someone pays me to do it
I ain't doing it for free

I mean I think it could be sold. Who needs recruiters when you have RecruitBot 5000?
You could have one person doing HR with the bot doing all the heavy lifting
I've actually thought of kind of doing the reverse and doing NLP on job postings so I don't have to read as much
Then I could write to them about how I used data to find their job about data

lol

I see you're already using your new power

I didn't even vote close, I just flagged it
interesting

I think certain flags count as votes once you get enough rep?

6:18 PM
I guess so o.o
I haven't used the "vote to close" option yet
but I guess a flag = vote?
Or did Rob Close it cus he's the mod and then it puts my name up there too cus I have 3k+ rep and I flagged it...
don't you need like 4 votes to actually close

Ahh I did think it was a bit odd that there were only 2 names
I think ACM has said something about how it works a couple of times, but I didn't pay much attention since I'm a rep pleb
I'm surprised that the answers that got there didn't mention hyperbolic geometry and rotations/boosts

6:26 PM
@danielunderwood the question really shows like...someone needs to have a long conversation with the OP to clear up his misconceptions...which is why I flagged it

Anonymous
Otherwise it is sent to the close review queue

there's no real way to answer his misconceptions with like a SO post.
@Blue I see...so now my flag = vote heh nice

vzn
@enumaris reconsiders... surprised you got no response at all, thats lame. but hey maybe think about looking into some of it outside of your job? phd means something right? :P

@vzn well I applied like last week so I think we can give it some more time lol
but Deepmind never responded, I guess I will reapply at some point

Yeah I do think it probably came from misconceptions

vzn
6:27 PM
@enumaris lol right. deepmind is probably most competitive in world right now... but they are also hiring like crazy, was amazed at the statistics... 1000s! ... anyway what do you like to do in your free time?

@danielunderwood one could address the specific problem in the OP I guess, but then it won't get you anywhere with the OP himself

@enumaris You cast a single close vote (of 5 needed) on it. When you're >3k, you can't "flag to close" - all your "flags to close" are automatically votes. The question was then instantly closed by rob because moderator votes are always binding.

@ACuriousMind makes sense
So is there some redundancy tho?
Like why should I cast close votes specifically when I can just flag it and it still counts as a vote?

@enumaris When you're "flagging" that counts as the same action as if you voted to close. There is no functional difference.

hmmm
so I'll just stick to "flagging" then :D
cus there's also a "vote to close" option I see

It still counts as one of your 24 close votes for the day, and you can't "flag" anymore when they're used up

oh, so there's 15 flags and 24 close votes?

I think the UI just still allows you to flag because they didn't want to break the workflow for people who got used to clicking on "flag" to close questions before they were >3k.

So I guess I could theoretically start casting close votes after my 15 flags are gone...but I don't think I've ever hit my 15 flags/day limit before lol

@enumaris The number of flags is dependent on your history of helpful flags and goes up to 100 if you have many helpful flags. A close vote does not count as a flag, even if you cast it throught the flag dialog

6:33 PM
o.o
uhhh...
ok...I think I'll just use the flags lol

vzn
oops 1000s 100s, maybe near 1k by now, was 700 Jan 2018, 400 phds o_O businessinsider.com/…

@enumaris It's really not that complicated if you just accept that not every option that comes up when you click "flag" is a flag ;)
It's confusing UI in some sense, but as I said it would probably also be confusing UI to remove the close options from the flag dialog one you hit 3k if you're used to seeing them there.

Alrighty, thanks for the explanation :D
so how much rep u need to vote undelete?
it seems close/open is 3k rep, delete/undelete is higher?
I can apparently vote to undelete my answer but I can't vote to undelete the question
wat

6:39 PM
dam...they be calling me too...

@enumaris You can always vote to undelete your own posts. You need 10k to (un)delete questions and 20k to (un)delete answers.

@ACuriousMind I see

Also in addition to your close votes, you get access to "@enumaris why you close my question?"

I can say "rob did it"
Ouch, my answer was attacked by Kyle as worthy of downvotes and deletion...I feel personally attacked! D:
(/s)

Yep I've seen a number of people say stuff like that
And tag every person listed as close votes...which I suppose could be reasonable if they weren't told why it was closed, but they usually have been told

I actively avoid any job posting that mentions Oracle

oh, it doesn't mention Oracle

Oh no I'm just saying I avoid the technology

but when I search the error messages I'm getting Oracle stuff

I always assume anything that uses Oracle is going to be old and broken

well
it is a state govt job site
so that's probably a good assumption

there doesn't seem to be an exchange for that

That there is no other SE site where a question is on-topic does not mean a question is on-topic here.

The (non-)existence of other sites does not determine our scope.
