We can't tell you whether to make a decision to invite your friend or not, because we don't know enough about you or your friends or the situation. However, we can help with achieving the goal of How to tell your friend that they need to stop inviting my other friends to these parties?. Can you edit your question so that you are explicitly asking that question, and also I want some clarification on a few things- Where do you live (what country)? How long has this been going on? Would there be any other reason other than (that you feel bothered) to tell A not to invite your other friends? — ElizB 31 secs ago

@GoodDeeds Most, if not all, of the suggested responses are ironic, in the sense that "the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect," (first definition of irony to appear in Google). I think what Dr4gon means is the fact that the responses are ironic should not be revealed deliberately through tone, manner, etc. Perhaps the advice could be "play it straight", or "keep it deadpan" (although, deadpan might imply lack of emotion, whereas appearing to agree might require a bit more acting). — Joshua Taylor 1 min ago

@thesecretmaster how do you mean?? Right now anything that calls scan_comments will still call the API and try to call record_comment to add it to the DB (so manscan should still be doing an actual re-scan). After that it just passes the ActiveRecord comment instead of the SE::API comment to the report_comments funct I made that prints from there. Anything that doesn't require scan_comments that's just trying to print a comment can call report_comments with the ActiveRecord

As an ace-aro, your advice about not enforcing the perception that everyone needs a boyfriend or girlfriend is very good. But it appears that for many of these students, the things they hear from their family or peers helps enforce that feeling in them, and they might consider it "weird" that I'm implying something different. @GoodDeeds Languages change. For some reason (likely because irony and sarcasm is kind of hard to grasp), "ironic" now means what "sarcastic" used to mean (while "sarcastic" seems to mean the same thing, but harsher). I didn't find any replacement for "irony", sadly - it just seems to complicated for most people to reliably get. @GoodDeeds I think it goes in the same corner, see the "definition". Both of them are bad because you need be sincere with your exaggeration and your statement in general. Applying no pressure is indistinguishable from disinterest. If being alone in a room with you is enough to overpower her ability to say no, you should probably discuss it with her handler/carer/psychologist because she's mentally unwell. If she is cognizant of pressure in the bedroom situation she was also aware she would feel pressured as she consented to enter the bedroom. I think what's confusing me in this post is that we're talking about frame-challenge answers everywhere, yet here you mention/use different terminology (reframing the question). I think I get it, and indeed your second example may be a proper frame-challenge answer provided it has enough back up. But asides from 'anything on-topic on IPS goes', the OP here is asking for the difference between respecting a premise and a proper frame-challenge. Would you think a frame-challenge like you're suggesting should always honour a premise? Which premise is then being honoured here? — Tinkeringbell ♦ 1 min ago

@Tinkeringbell The OP says "I feel like a lot of flagged and downvoted on the fence answers are right on the gray line between being not-quite-frame challenges and not respecting the premise of the question". So he is talking about answers, and so am I. A "re-frame challenge" has to provide a re-framed question and then answer it, right? Otherwise it is just an opinion-based answer telling them what to do / not to do. I'm saying the new, reframed question must be in-scope too. — Astralbee 33 secs ago

'don't tell anyone that they are definitely autistic' Isn't that a slightly unfair comment on a question which is specifically asking how they can tell someone that they 'might' be on the spectrum? Also, the OP says ' I still waited two years after that before asking for an actual diagnostic' which certainly suggests the OP has a professional diagnosis. @Spagirl Fair comment on the diagnosis - I had missed that detail in the lengthy question and have edited accordingly. I don't think anything I have said is unfair however - nobody but a healthcare professional should be telling anyone they are autistic. I wouldn't call this a reframe challenge because I have gone on to show how they can "tell" their friend in an indirect way which I feel better respects the friend's own feelings on whether or not they should seek a diagnosis. — Astralbee 1 min ago

There's still quite a lot of room between in-scope and respecting the premise of a question though. Like from the examples on Parenting, both questions about co-sleeping and putting a kid in their own bed are on-topic, yet in their policy about respecting premises, they're clear that reframing a question about cosleeping into one about putting a kid in their own bed is a no-go. So I'm wondering how 'as long as it's on topic' measures up to 'respecting the premise' in your answer. — Tinkeringbell ♦ 18 secs ago

Most introverts I know enjoy talking about personal stuff and spend their weekends doing things that might be more popular. I think it is a reasonable question to ask - how do you sell what you do as interesting without coming across as the kind of person people don't like - I hope you get the right answer, but could you remove your introvert stuff? I find it borderline offensive tbo. Not every introvert is x, that's just stereotypes and let's not spread them further. You just happen to be both introverted and really into working hard — Raditz_35 59 secs ago

I added an information in my question and would like to know if it changes your answer. The information is this: I know that, in the past, this friend were looking for an answer to why they were the way they are (and why they were always so tired). Also, if there is a chance that I might help this friend by pointing them in the direction of ASD (just suggesting to them that it might be worth looking into it), why shouldn't I do it? @grinch Consent is all about influence and power. If one person has more power over another person, the consent between the two individuals is questionable. It’s a spectrum of course so little things like being physically larger don’t completely invalidate consent where as things like an adult and a child makes consent completely invalid because the power delta is too high. The topic at hand falls in the middle. In a safe, public setting like a restaurant both parties are on more equal footing. If, however, you are alone in someone else’s room the power shifts to them significantly — Sirens 1 min ago

@anongoodnurse I'm not sure it changes much. Your answer is based off the idea that the father can't understand that other people feel differently from him; whether he's just astonishingly arrogant, has a mental disorder, or is trying to cope with the trauma of separation, the fact is that (a) he's trying to visit the mother and (b) the mother has repeatedly expressed a desire not to see him again. He's long since overstepped any boundaries, and harsher actions -- like the ones you describe -- must be taken. — Nic Hartley 26 secs ago

@Quantic that's completely disregarding the time (and depending on your location money) it takes to get a diagnosis. it can take months to get a diagnosis. That's a significant investment if you ask me. And even then my point still remains the same. Address the problems the person is actually having, bring those to a psychiatrist, and let them figure out what diagnosis and help is useful in that situation. Addressing the symptoms is so much less likely to be taken a/the wrong way. — JAD 1 min ago

I'll add that standing for a woman can also come from helping her into and out of her chair, i.e. pulling her chair out for her and helping her scoot towards the table. This depends on the level of interaction, such as a date vs a business meeting, as pulling out a chair is more of an intimate gesture that might not be appropriate for business. A lady in (high) heels or a large skirt may have difficulty in getting into or out of the chair, so this could also be considered chivalrous act. — computercarguy 15 secs ago
