The contrast ratio and color gamut on this Lenovo netbook's display are so poor that even reading text is harder than on most displays.

Anyone familar with Optane memory? Do the Optane 900p-drives and the m.2 optane memory drives work the same way? My build got more complicate due to the U.2 drive my motherboard supports :-)
Crude...
I think I just ordered a motherboard
that doesn't support nvme on the m.2 slots
1 x U.2 port2
Supports PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe storage
hmm
Wonderful
Looks like I need a U.2 to M.2 board
Hopefully my 1TB Samsung 970 Pro doesn't go to waste :$

Bob
2:34 AM
@Ramhound You could also get a PCIe to M.2 card

Yeah looks like I will have to either do U.2 to M.2 or PCIe to M.2
"M2_1 & M2_3 support up to PCIe" doesn't that mean it supports NVMe?
or is that not implied?
3 x M.2 slots (Key M)1
M2_1 & M2_3 support up to PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA 6Gb/s, 2242/ 2260/ 2280/ 22110 storage devices
M2_2 supports up to PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA 6Gb/s, 2242/ 2260/ 2280 storage devices
Intel® Optane™ Memory Ready
1 x U.2 port2
Supports PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe storage
(first time ssd user) :-)
MSI's website is broke, manual isn't up yet

Bob
@Ramhound model num?
@Ramhound yea you should be able to use NVMe on any of those three slots, but the "up to" usually means it's shared somehow
e.g. enabling NVMe on one slot can reduce lanes on a PCIe slot or disable two SATA ports etc
the specifics will be in the manual

MEG Z390 Godlike
So in some further documentation they advertise this feature called M.2 Genie
Which base on the image clarifies that the M.2 does indeed support NVMe

@Ramhound It would be very surprising for a board of this caliber to not support NVMe on the M.2 slot.

2:49 AM
@Ramhound Technically, Optane Memory is just a low-capacity Optane drive that is optimized for read-heavy caching workloads.

I know :-)
I was thinking about a U.2 Optane drive but might save that for a further upgrade once Optane sees another upgrade ;-)

If you wanted to, you could use Optane Memory in an AMD board with StoreMI.

@bwDraco - LOL, I literally just purchased an Intel motherboard with "Godlike" in the name of the product
Just saying :-)
Little late for the AMD suggestion :-)

@Ramhound An MSI "Godlike" board is a flagship-class board. There is no reason for a board of this caliber to have SATA-only M.2 slots.
The Godlike boards are designed without regard to cost.

I agree but the specifications don't make it clear

2:53 AM
This is an EATX board. Be sure to pick a case to match.
(FWIW Astaroth is built around an EATX board)

Would you recomend it?

I don't have much experience with modern Intel desktop platforms.
Sorry.

( I have no idea what case Astaroth uses )

Corsair Graphite 760T. An older design, though.
In case you're wondering, this is my main desktop. It's an absolute powerhouse but I've been keeping it on less because of power consumption and heat concerns (it makes my bedroom hot especially under load).
I suppose you're looking to build a similarly ambitious system if you chose an MSI Godlike board...
Looking at the new 8C/16T i9-9900K?

Yes
Got the 2080 Ti today, ordered the motherboard and CPU today

2:59 AM
Congratulations!

Thanks
I have like 80 hours of leave I have to use or it will expire

I'm looking to skip the 20 series, and will wait for NVIDIA to come out with a 7nm solution. It's too much money to justify an upgrade from a GTX 1080 Ti.

So this should keep me busy
So I wanted to do this last generation

Of course, if you're building a completely new machine... get the latest hardware.

But the entire 12 months of the 15 months I looked
1080 Tis were at a 200% premium
So when I heard about the 200's series i was I am just waiting on that
Paid the $300 premum to get the darn thing
instead of waiting months which was a good decision due to the price increase overseas due to tarifs

3:02 AM
I bought into this before the big cryptocurrency graphics card shortage hit. The card I have is a rare variant of EVGA's 1080 Ti card, the FTW3 Elite Gaming, with special 12 Gbps memory.

I am a little ticked off that MSI can't get their website in order
I want to read the darn manual ;-(
It looks like you're trying to read the darn manual ;-(.

Would you like help?
lol

My next planned upgrade is on the processor: I expect to upgrade to a third-generation Ryzen processor shortly after release in 2019.
(currently running a Ryzen 7 1800X)
Yeah, I studied the manual before I started building.

That will be a good upgrade
Nvidia can take a lot of crude for their annoucement but Newegg and amzon had stuff online the minute it was for sale
Amazon and Newegg took 5 hours for the CPU/motherboard
I had to order the motherboard from one and the CPU from another (which I miss out on my 3x points)

Incidentally... Astaroth came online on October 25, 2017 so it's almost one year since I put together a PC by myself for the first time.

"The PCIe CeaseFire switch allows you to enable/ disable the PCIe slots (by CPU lanes)
conveniently and directly." Why would somebody do this?

3:07 AM
IIRC my board allows me to do that.
No need to physically remove the card from the machine.
What if, let's say, you had two cards in the machine but a game wouldn't play nice with SLI or CrossFire?

Ahhh
So it's not to enable the M.2, gotcha

What cooler? To make the most of the processor, you need a premium thermal solution (as Intel calls it).

3:26 AM
Noctua NH-D15
I am not ready for Liquid Cooling
From what I have read, even the AIO require maintenance

That will do but make sure you have good case ventilation. For best performance, ensure you have airflow that helps exhaust the heat.
Air coolers are more sensitive to this than liquid coolers, where the heat is exhausted directly out of the case in typical configurations.

I have my eyes on numerous fans
So it shouldn't be a problem

Modern high-performance air coolers can be just as effective as 240mm or even 280mm liquid coolers as long as you have adequate airflow.

Yep I am aware
I have a beefy setup currently although I hate the case
poor user documentation
and cables were not labeed
connected 5v to gnd :-)

lol

Ffs, twitter depreciated search timelines, literally the only twitter functionality I ever used.
I really cba updating my website at 5am just to get a hashtag timeline working again. Especially when it's literally so I can just reply to one tweet with a link to my webpage.
Also what's with SE chat now only loading like, the last 3 messages when you open the page
Seriously, are all Web 2.0 developers idiots? Every new website change just breaks simple functionality and does nothing useful.
2
Oh and apparently they emailed some people about it but never bothered informing me

So I am really confused. I got this notification surrounding EFS, and I followed the instructions to backup my certificate (I was testing EFS for an answer so this isn't alarming) but I thought I unencrypted that folder. Now the notification didn't really tell me what it was trying to notify me about exactly
(hugs Windows 10)

Twitter GDIAF

manage file encryption certificate
indicated that it was indeed the same certificate

@Bob Umm what?
Haven't followed the conversation... you've got an isolated mobile tower transmitting an incorrect network time? How is that even possible, and how are the idiots creating these broken systems getting jobs. And why is that now becoming the norm? Grrr.
Yeah I'm gonna give up on fixing my website's twitter feed, which means giving up on actually making new connections with people because I can't reply to someone's tweet referencing a broken website because twitter turned off like, one of the most common and basic API embeds in order to make people pay money for a premium account. WTF is wrong with the world today.

Bob
@noitsbecky idk if it's isolated, just that my time is correct at home and changes (dst) at work
so I assume it's a single tower
I don't think I cross a time zone within Sydney

4:38 AM
@Bob You'll probably need a rooted phone to read the signalling data :-/ Or find someone in the network who knows how to fix such things by knowing people through a mobile game who used to work with people in a related industry, like I'm having to do, or option 3, break into the tower and turn it off, which is what I'm considering doing out of desperation at how stupid the world has become.

Bob
@noitsbecky brb while I build up my network of engineers at Telstra

I'm supposed to be stalking some people in the morning to find out what kind of fake 5G jiggery-pokery they're fitting into these new streetpole mobile sites, before going to a meeting at lunchtime and jumping on a plane in the evening. I don't have time to rewrite a website to accommodate Twitter's corporate greed in the meantime just so I can make friends with people down the street who support unbreaking UK politics (i.e. stop-brexit-fucking-up-scotland-protesters).
And people wonder why I wreck my life with drugs in order to cope with the clusterfuck that is modern society...
@Bob LinkedIn is actually a useful place to find people who know things. Like this guy, who might just be able to get my local mast's wiring fixed linkedin.com/in/paul-huxford-277984b4/?originalSubdomain=uk Or might not, because Vodafone don't actually care because the deficient wiring only affects Telefonica's L1800 which Vodafone don't use due to coporate greed ala anticompetitive spectrum hoarding.
WHY IS THE WORLD SO BROKEN.
6
Oh and at some point I gotta figure out what BOBs MBNL are using to deploy L2100 for 3 and EE on legacy U2100 NSN masts (and whether 3 are finally deploying useful LTE-A CA instead of the existing retarded setup which deliberately blocks useful functionality in the name of treating consumers like idiots). Again shit I do not want to have to deal with.
WHY IS THE WORLD SO BROKEN.
6
Oh and then there's the idiot posting antithetical crypto price predictions making people lose money, shit I'm falling for everyone else is regurgitating the same misinformation and I don't have time to process all the fake news because I'm too busy dealing with all the other retarded stuff I just mentioned. Argh.
WHY IS THE WORLD SO BROKEN

Bob
@noitsbecky Yea, thanks, I might look into that if this is still broken at the end of the week
Can't be arsed to try to help telstra fix their problem

@Bob Sadly, you have to know people who know people to know which people you're looking for to begin with.
Or you could try calling customer services :-P
##multiheaddesk

@noitsbecky That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

Oh yeah, I can't ##undo on my own bot cause I'm using the cloned admin/RO ACL from allquixotic's export.
I'd ##epicubermegaextremeheaddesk right now but I don't think I've made a GIF for that, and also don't have the time to do it. I've already used up the biggest !!headdesk command I have.
I guess ##triplefacepalm will have to do

Bob
5:02 AM
@noitsbecky I'd probably have better luck with twitter. Speaking of...

@Bob Sadly true, but also sadly only very slightly true. Vodafone UK's twitter support is marginally better than calling customer services, in that you get a form reply to PM a second line support guy on their support forums that can do slightly more useful things than the frontline helpdesk drones.

6:02 AM
@Bob Unless Farseeker's sydney based, and in the same neighbourhood, it can't be one tower.
Cause I'm clearly too sleepy to remember his first name

the sad thing here is....
I've seen so many examples of this
like the guy who wanted a modern browser to run on a windows 3.11 powered saw....

I can't read that sentence without giggling
A modern browser on a windows 3.11 powered saw
Maybe the drugs medication I'm taking for my back has kicked in

The alternative is no joke
Look after your back, and it'll look after you

10:27 AM
@bertieb or just getting up every half hour or so

@JourneymanGeek Definitely, get up and stretch
I'm guilty of not doing that, and I should know better
Can be hard to remember when you're in flow too
Can set reminders/timers, but then you have the dilemma of interrupting flow...

No flow at my job ;)

Ah, well then :P

Actually my job is the other way around
the best way to do it is to rely on notifications and reminders, and do other stuff in the meanwhile
I'm debating bringing a yoga ball though

That's great when it works! When the people or processes on the other end can be trusted
I had a friend complaining about that sorta thing other day- trying to book study leave time away from work has to go through about four people, some of whom are off-site in a nearby city (Manchester as it happens)
It's not enough to write an email detailing what, where, when and why- they need lots of prodding, poking and such to actually get an answer
So 'fire and forget' isn't an option
Takes up a lot of mental runtime, tracking these things
It's annoying
And for whatever reason, I get irked too by proxy :P
I guess it trips my sense of, channelling William Shatner: "There. Must be. A better way!"
Anyway, who left this soapbox here?
I'll just, ah, get off that and put it away

Q: How do you write a C program to increment a number by keypress and auto-decrement it per second?

RitikaI'm trying to write a program in which a number starts from 0, but when you press any key, it gets incremented by 1. If nothing is pressed, it keeps on decreasing by 1 per second until it reaches 0. Every increment or decrement is displayed on the console window. Problem with my approach is that...

This question makes me sad. It's not really a bad question - and I admire the attempt.
But the answers. Oh man.
The answers largely fail to explain anything...

@allquixotic that's an interesting solution :P
@allquixotic btw C# mitigates this with randomised string hashing: referencesource.microsoft.com/#mscorlib/system/string.cs,835

I was catching up on the mainstream IT news over the weekend, including the following article:
For those of us who have been around the SU community for at least the last two years, the comments section was mildly entertaining:
In other words, please don't dwell on the past. As you can see, even an author with an impressive Windows-related pedigree isn't immune to "scrutiny." ;-)

Bob
5:19 PM
@noitsbecky So apparently they're selling official dual-SIM Note9s in AU. Now I want to upgrade...
Gah. Two years. Should wait two years. Hopefully three. Upgrading a flagship after half a year is far too soon.

> Fleet Command
Not that's a familiar name... ;P

@rahuldottech Exactly! For those of us who had our expertise questioned during his prime-time in the Super User realm, that article proves that he doesn't play favorites. Even Ed Bott isn't above reproach!

:47103111 uh, me or @Run5k?

@Bob I really did laugh-out-loud when I read that part!

@rahuldottech I was quoting the first sentence of the 4th comment in the screenshot. But on second thought it's probably better not to, being a public room and all :P

5:26 PM
@rahuldottech, Ed Bott said that to the legendary Fleet Command.

ah, rightt

@Run5k yup
More than once
speaking of hamfisted service disablement
the company I work for accidentally pushed down a GPO rule that disabled the themes service
they just fixed it

@Bob Yeah, the official dual SIMs have been a lot easier to get hold of on the S9 generation
@Bob I'll take the S9 off you if it's a dual SIM so you can get the Note 9 instead :-P
Mind you I aint planning on flying to Aus till Jan or Feb so it'll be a while

@JourneymanGeek More than once? Needless to say, that's unfortunate. What's really a shame is that he seems to be a genuinely talented, intelligent person regarding computer-related topics! However, his overt lack of patience and empathy were a deal-breaker.

@Run5k Well, sometimes talent dosen't make up for, well...

Agreed.

6:18 PM
hey people

6:30 PM
do anyone here game and use radeon rx500+ series card?

6:42 PM
i have a 290

do you know how to control the throttling on it?

nope
never needed to

i have an rx550 which starts throttling after 10 min of gaming, probaly to prevent overheating

time to add more fans?

hard when the gpu is in a thin laptop lol

6:45 PM
you can get one of those laptop stands with fans in it

thing is that temperature is looking fine right before throttling starts, its like the system is over-protecting the gpu

are you sure its the GPU that is throttling and not the CPU?

let me check again, its been a while since i checked this

7:09 PM
alright, I logged the hardware usage while playing and this is what i got:

gpu memory clock: 912mhz
gpu temperature: 68-70
gpu fan speed: 1500

**After 5-10 min gaming:**
gpu memory clock: 214mhz
gpu temperature: 58-60
gpu fan speed: jumps from 614 to 1500 at a high frequency

When performance drops so does the cpu usage and temperature.

7:46 PM
howdy you guys there?

\o horwdy

just trying to figure out this autohotkey script

8:22 PM
PDFs, Open Office docs, MS Office docs have document properties ( File > Properties... ) . In the document properties, there's space for keywords.
Which desktop search tools can search by these keywords?
I wasn't able to make the Windows desktop search find documents by keywords. (Even the MS Office documents.)

@NickAlexeev That would make an excellent question for Software Recommendations. Note that this is a chat room not really somewhere to ask questions that should be asked on a main site.

Agreed. For simple questions, ask away, but if it's something that needs an in-depth answer and is on-topic at a Stack Exchange site, it's best to ask there.
@abobakrdy Is the CPU itself being throttled?
If this is an AMD-based machine, something called "skin temperature-aware power management" (STAPM) may well be the issue.
(on my machine, when plugged in and with HP thermal profile set to high performance, the system allows the processor to run up to 25W power for several seconds to several minutes, with a 30W short peak, depending on temperature, cooling, and overall load)

8:46 PM
@bwDraco how do i tell if the cpu or the gpu is thottling? all i know is that they both downgrade at the same time significantly after 5-10 min of gaming.

my cpu is an intel i7 8550 series

Hmm... Intel processors don't do that.
But heat can accumulate in the chassis and cause thermal throttling to occur in the processor.
I would suppose that if the system has discrete graphics, the processor runs at 25W cTDP, and not the base 15W.
Are the CPU and GPU on separate heatsinks or fans, or are they shared?
What model system is this?

@bwDraco Heh. Not always am I good at predicting what will be simple, and what will be in-depth. That's why I try questions in chat first.

but if heat was accumulated, wouldnt it show on the logs? under normal circumstances its 68-70, and ive read that this is a good temperature. i dont know if they share same cooling or not, but im checking it up now. what do you mean by model system, like laptop model?

Yeah, that's what I meant.
If that's a CPU temperature, the system isn't overheating. It may very well be limiting power elsewhere to keep the system's surface temperature under control. You don't want the laptop to get so hot that it can cause burns, even if it's in spec for the processor.
This could be controlled by a motherboard temperature sensor or through algorithms that measure heat over time, like AMD's STAPM system.

9:03 PM
its an lenovo thinkpad e580

Hmm...

the temp i mentioned was for the GPU, and yes. This is what im thinking as well, some sort of power/heat controll that is sharing it across several components.
Its just that im convinced a computer like this should be able to handle it for more then 10 minutes, from the temperatures and logs ive seen
and it acts the same way if the graphics are ultra high or ultra low, which it shouldnt
i had an thinkpad e570 before this, which had intel i5 processor and nvidia 920 gpu, and it could run the same game on high settings for many hours

This machine uses a single heatsink and fan. As a result, heat from the GPU can transfer to the processor and vice versa. Are you able to monitor CPU temperatures?

i see, i wish i could turn of the sensor controll and just see how much the heat evolves. probaly not a good idea lol
where did you check those specs @bwDraco? im curious about the e570 series

Depending on the system, there may be ways to control the performance/temperature/noise balance. On my HP ENVY x360 13, there's an app called HP Command Center which allows the laptop to be set to one of four modes: adaptive (HP CoolSense, balances performance, temperature, and noise), high performance (increases fan speed and power limit, laptop must be plugged in), low temperature (ramps up fan, lower power limit), and low noise (limits fan speed, very low power limit).

9:16 PM
alright, i think i have something similar to the hp program. i see on the review that the e570 with a worse gpu is doing better at gaming performance... i kinda bought this computer because it had a better cpu and gpu, and this is what happens lol

> We were thus very curious how the E580’s more powerful CPU would perform, and it did not take long to disappoint us. In Cinebench R15’s multi-core test, the E580’s nominally faster Core i7-8550U turned out to be slower than the E480’s Core i5-8250U.
Wat.

thats weird, all though i can say that the computer except from gaming is faster then the e570

The E480 is the current-generation 14" model. The E570 is the previous-generation 15" model.
It's likely that the move to the quad-core processor has caused some issues with the cooler. Lenovo has not changed the cooler from the previous generation, and it might be overheating under full load when the previous model did not.

im checking to see if i can set the system on different performance modes

How do I help someone who isn't enjoying anything in life.

9:33 PM
@djsmiley2k Heroin?
(CoC: above is a joke)
It's a pretty broad question tho

only power managment settings i can find is the windows 10 features, all though there are some "machine settings" on the lenovo software but nothing like you meantioned

Ah, forget about it, dummy question. in fact it is called a local bus...
