12:02 AM
Hello! :)

@Dog apparently last year was harder on famous people than most
@allquixotic I have a 980TI
My upgrade cycle was a little earlier than both of you
@Bob 760T if you're installing an optical drive, 760D otherwise
also, cosair fan controllers are mostly worthless
@MyDaftQuestions oh, for a one off image, macrium reflect free works well.

Bob
12:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek why? 750D has optical drive bays, no?

The NSA can fire lasers at your windows and work out what you are saying based on the vibrations of the glass. Also Elvis is still alive. — Burgi 12 secs ago

The window laser thing is real, though I don't know if the NSA is using it much or at all

Dog
Ermm
Which Elvis?

ALL OF THEM

@Burgi the 760T seems to be designed so you can add a ODD without removing the front face
looks better ;p
but the 760D is generally better looking/designed I suspect
top facing USB ports suck ;p

Dog
12:42 AM
You've just lost all credibility Burgi

@JourneymanGeek i didn't know that a 760T was a type of elvis

ITS ALL ELVIS!
THEY'RE EVERYWHERE. YOU'RE PROBABLY ELVIS! ITS ELVII ALL THE WAY DOWN!

lol

I mention Elvis and @ThatBrazilianGuy turns up? Coincidence or conspiracy?
2

@Dog did i ever have credibility in your opinion?

Bob
12:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...was that supposed to be a reply to me? o.O

Also, I prefer not to engage the obviously somewhat disturbed
@Bob yes

Bob
and yea I think I just generally like the 750D (Airflow one)'s look more

Bob
@JourneymanGeek my current ODD would actually match the 750D front face, I think lg.com/us/support-product/lg-BH10LS30

Bob
12:45 AM
eww bad photo

They really ought to either have mesh front faceplates or make mesh compatible ODDs

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, it's not like the whole 750D front is mesh
only the bottom bit
the top is flat

(also, its cold today. Wearing a hoodie indoors)
@Bob my 600T is all mesh ;p

i think tomorrow is going to be fix steam streaming day

Raul... 16yo... Hm... I think we might be unto something here....

Bob
12:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek my current case has mesh front plates :P
looks alright with the ODD replacing the top one

@JourneymanGeek OMG @Rahul2001 IS INVOLVED IN THE ELVIS CONSPIRACY!

I'm wondering if superuser.com/questions/1160860/… is an aibobot question

@JourneymanGeek it will go HNQ if you answer it though

I think the question is, is it worth non modly grumpyness

theverge.com/2016/12/27/14089836/… talking computer to make first appearances in murder trial? it is no longer a movie :-) it is real
and in other news abcnews.go.com/US/… teens mall the malls , is it the end of brick and morter stores, cause all them teens buy Online anyways .

1:00 AM
hm
am I misremembering that some USB cables have resistors in them for voltage draw?
or is that just type C?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek just c, and that was for cable id

@JourneymanGeek usb high speed charging was first done with "tying the data lines" using resisters. that doesnt apply specific to all cables.

Bob
just c to a really

@Psycogeek I'm trying to scare someone so it'll do.

Bob
proper c to c should connect the cc line through
c to a put a resistor on the cc line for id

1:08 AM
generally adding in any resistance to the 2 power wire connetions, would just reduce the power going to anything (and would serve no purpose). the resisters applied in those situations to the data lines, was just an identificator that it could draw more than the 500ma. While it could be IN the cables it was more often in the charging device.

Bob
@bwDraco ....I get the feeling no one in this room would care.

Bob
Also fyi Sept is when they review it, not final termination of support.

also. as with OS/2...
there's likely to be less famous browser options
people used to use k-meleon as a fairly modern/supported browser on older windows

1:15 AM
> "We expect to continue to provide security updates for [Windows XP and Windows Vista] users until September 2017,” the firm said. “In mid-2017, user numbers on Windows XP and Vista will be reassessed and a final support end date will be announced."

I hate it when (new) people come in and post the very same answer on multiple posts
Now I need to decide if they're dupes or not

@ThatBrazilianGuy !? O_O

eh. His answers are crap.
oh well, sorted
@Rahul2001 ARE YOU?

@JourneymanGeek I've seen it happen several times. They're usually either spam, not answers, or very low quality.

@bwDraco I'm waffling whether its spam but user will likely be auto-answer banned so meh

1:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek I... don't think so

@Rahul2001 that's exactly what elvis would say...
just with an accent.

xD

2:00 AM
hm
Apparently I'm not running e10 cause oneliner and @OliverSalzburg's chat reply helper arn't e10 compatible

Dog
FLOOF

2:15 AM
fox like typing detected

ninjamodchanges @Dog's nick to @fox

Dog
No you didn't

2:47 AM
Oh, everyone else sees it
(No I didn't. I wouldn't ever abuse mod powers ;p)

Dog
3:10 AM
Huh. Somehow manage to keep crashing mpc-hc with out of memory errors
Ironically the 64-bit version uses 1/4 as much RAM despite "having memory leaks" being listed as a known bug...

3:31 AM
Leia memorial in SWTOR

@Dog 0_0
I've never managed that

4:17 AM
I'm planning on entering the IOT.SE moderator nomination in operation moderation or as I will like to call it playing with fire.
LOL! :D

Be careful what you wish for
You might get elected.

@JourneymanGeek you make it sound like it's a lot of work or something to be a mod ;)

@allquixotic there's days ;p
Its not really that hard
Just the occational days when you want to leave a gift in someone's shoes.

If JourneymanGeek can do it so can I!

@allquixotic looks like the sports stadium after a hurricane hits. better get somone in there crafting porta-potties.

4:24 AM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 ahahahahahahaha

;D
Spam!^ Not Confirmed

@HenryWHHackv2.0 I had about 4 years experience on the site, I think 20k and a perfect candidate score with over 2000 flags. I'm sure it's trivial.

I can learn something from this guy!^

Yes. Talk less. Do more.

4:40 AM
We are all moderators on SE in our own way! :)
I think.
Good Bye! :)

...and a long road ahead of me as I need to work on soft skills.
The most critical moderation skill is learning to handle situations as peacefully as possible, and minimizing disruption when things do get out of hand. That means understanding the intent of others and ensuring that every mod action carries just the right amount of impact to stop the problem behavior without causing undue disruption.
Right, @JourneymanGeek?
I also need to get back to reviewing and contributing on the main site.

I don't think that far :p

@JourneymanGeek That's because you already have the soft skills. It comes natural to you.
Work on building critical social and leadership skills is already in an advanced stage of planning with goals set for the next six to nine months.
A full-time job is expected by the middle of 2017, with a rapid ramp-up in outside social interaction planned over the coming weeks.
My mother still has some concerns but she does recognize that improvements in soft skills are desparately needed. After all, it's not just for me to become a more valuable contributer on Super User and Stack Exchange, it's for my career.

5:02 AM

ahh blast these capchas never work right for me

@bwDraco I worked... 2 months in the last year

I think that one was on my SATs

Unless SE hires me , I'm pretty doubtful my internet social skills here will ever result in me getting a job ;p
Even if they do, its likely to be a combination of factors

@JourneymanGeek I realize that you've been out of work for a while, but you actively seek out jobs and spent considerable time outside and in the workplace. We're in a transitional phase right now as our house is undergoing extensive renovations, and I need to spend some time building my skills for the future.

5:11 AM
@bwDraco internet social skills and realworld social skills are totally different.

I just lack adequate experience in the outside world.
Not totally. There is considerable overlap.

and to be honest, the best person to learn real world social skills from... is a dog

My parents do not want a large pet.
Oct 2 at 4:13, by bwDraco
I was never properly taught to be self-sufficient, nor was I given any major responsibilities such as managing a large pet (cat, dog, etc.). My parents never had much confidence that I could be self-reliant, which is why I've always been less mature than I should be. I'm in a much worse position than a lot of young adults.
Again, major changes planned for the coming months.
Nov 16 '14 at 6:56, by DragonLord
My actions in cyberspace reflect my real-world personality, and I'm running a huge personal project to fix these issues.
Soft skills learned in the outside world transfer, at least to some degree, to cyberspace.

@bwDraco or at least a hypothetical dog.

@bwDraco so the fire breathing dragon was not an option? you could always watch a goldfish die, that teaches a lot :-) then have you a hamster that dies under the refrigerator. then get a cat, , that hates you and claws everyone. after those wonderfull learning experiences get a dog, who then eats the guinney pigs. yea some of us should just have a ant farm :-)

5:20 AM
I've always wanted to keep a couple of mice or rats.
They're a lot less work than cats or dogs.
We used to have fishes, but I didn't play any significant role in maintaining them. (We don't presently have any plans to put together another aquarium.)
Plus, those little rodents are adorable :)

there are moderators in existance that would kick a sleeping dog, they are still somewhat effective, if you like a whole forum of onliners walking on eggshells

Pets teach responsibility, not social or leadership skills. That's why I'm planning to spend more time in the outside world socializing with others.
It still feels awkward at times, but I should get more confident as my skills improve.

play more football, they pay you to beat people :-)

lol
@bwDraco walking a dog forces you to interact with people
and dogs are usually the most social creatures on the planet

I recognize that, but this doesn't work with my family.

5:26 AM
But I didn't say "get a dog"
I said learn from dogs.

I'm a bit confused here. Care to explain?

Well, many of the skills one uses to deal with dogs also works with people
positive reinforcement for example.

how many ways can you call a dog stupid, and still have him wagging his tail :-)

and as a whole, a well trained dog is a patient yet somewhat sneaky creature.
er. See that's impulsive
Why not go volunteer at a local shelter?

learn skills like , taking a bone from a pitbull , and walking away with your hand.

5:30 AM
Well, I have already suggested volunteering at a food pantry...
That can achieve similar goals without interacting with animals.

@Psycogeek pitbulls are somewhat misunderstood
They're not actually an agressive breed

^^^ Agreed. I see pitbulls all the time in the city and they are not normally aggressive.

@JourneymanGeek true, but they still have Jaws that make getting that tennis ball out a challenge.

@Psycogeek training tho
a well trained dog will drop the ball since he knows that's the best way to go fetch again
in a sense, dogs socially engineer humans ;)

it is on topic :-) moderating a forum is like getting brittany spears chiwawa out of her purse without a fuss .
it can be done, its just that not everyone can or wants to do it :-)

5:35 AM
@Psycogeek or herding snauzers :)

I will evaluate every option available and seize every opportunity to build soft skills.

anyway
@bwDraco ever heard of temple grandin?

Bob
meow

No, not even familiar with the topic of animal interaction.

ah hah. so you have.

5:38 AM
a suspention is like leaving your dog in a kennels, terrible place to be, but they learn 6 new ways to bark , learn to not get caught/trapped again, ahd they return with a vengefull mindset :-)

I'm just not into this.

Not the person, the ideas.

Why do you insist on caring for an animal?

Well, in the most basic sense, you're trading something for something else.

@bwDraco wholly cheaper than wife and kids

5:41 AM
Also, its very hard to say no to this

even female dogs are easy to figure out , live with , deal with, understand.

(This was the week we 'formally' adopted him)

nice haircut

5:53 AM
if a fight gets started , dont get your hand in there right away, joining it.
see how that applies?
once the fight is over, convincing the parties how stupid that was , while they are still licking the wounds , then they would tend to agree with you :-)

I had (wisely 😛) pulled out before it got too far.

i think my experience with dogs and people might be completely different than JMGs . here we are sub-urban , many people with dogs. when i take my dog to a "city" the big lots of people mny apartments , high rent, city , people are very different.
here , enough people have dogs, it isnt special at all, and they get in more situations, where you have to control everything, or stop controlling anything (dog park)
In the big city, my dog got treated more like i had a unicorn

Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, devised by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. It illustrates what he saw as the problem of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics applied to everyday objects. The scenario presents a cat that may be simultaneously both alive and dead, a state known as a quantum superposition, as a result of being linked to a random subatomic event that may or may not occur. The thought experiment is also often featured in theoretical discussions of the interpretations of quantum mechanics. Schrödinger coined the...
Interesting...

in the city people were more like "is that a dog?" "i wish i had one", "can i pet him," etc

@allquixotic I will be trying Xiaomi 10,000mAh and LifeCharge 13,000mAh power packs on TP-LINK travel router. As long as voltage is 5.1V consistent it should work. Wonder for how long juice will be sufficient...

6:37 AM
@Psycogeek Ash is trained to back off on command.
One should never fear. One needs to realise when a fight is not worth it
@Psycogeek my area has a ton of dogs due to a quirk of demographics
mixed sizes too
There's even a local rodesian ridgeback

lol the ridgeback dogs think my dog is for hunting :-) although they can get along in the park

Most of them are fine. Tho one keeps trying to pee on me.

Bob
woof

I think my dog will cool it, on command shouted loudly. but the spazo estate dog wont stop so easily.
on approaches to some people most dogs , and cats and ducks and all, the estate dog seems to be adding a stalking move at the end of the leash. So much fun. Head and body down , pulling on the leash.
because I didnt teach him any of his stupid, I dont really know how to unteach it?

6:48 AM
ahh, see, the clever part is he goes sits down next to the nearest human

lol where he feels safe?

Well, kinda
He probably would not back down otherwise
I've had to pull him off a full grown husky once.
and he would fight pretty dirty.

ahh dirty, my dogs are too excited to think at that point. Would be funny if they had a few tricks other than jumping around tying me up with the leashes, and making noises.
either ONE of them walked one at a time , is simple. both they instantally become a team of gang members who just left the bar drunk,
is not that different from when we were kids. One kid alone, unlikely to get into trouble or even have cool adventures. but 2 or more together and the neighborhood beware.

he's smart enough to do this goo.gl/photos/kw3Fe63HYTEH2nzA8
wasn't trained or anything

i have programmed my dog to follow Asimov's 3 laws. he's plotting to kill me

I find about a port number 9339 which is registered to a gaming company called supercell. Now if other 48,000 online services register to own other 48000 port then doesn't it mean that all ports get exhausted?

why do they need to register a port if they already own a static IP?

@MichaelTimmerman If a dog wanted you dead you would be

@JourneymanGeek why no?

@AlanWatch er. You know there's such a thing as "there's no such thing as a dumb question?"
That's a dumb question.
or more correctly, you're asking the wrong question
for the "why do they need to register a port if they already own a static IP?"
It basically means "hey, we're using this port. If you use this port, it might not work if the system is using my service"
Which is rarely the case of course.
But essentially. No. It does not work like that at all.
hell, I could run the same port on two different IP address on the same server.
Do we need a terrible library/postal analogy?

7:19 AM
yea where does it say that a specific game of any kind in any OS is restricted , forced, or registered to a specific port? a software may use a specific port, which is known so people can route it, block it, tunnel it or vpn it or something, but "port"s are not registered by an authority to keep everyone organised?

"hell I could run the same port on 2 different IP" exactly I was asking the same thing..2 different static IP can use the same port for the communication with the client then there is no need to register a port

@AlanWatch eh. kinda sorta
You couldn't run a mail server easily outside the well known port.
Basically its a way of saying "we have dibs on this port, and if things break, its your fault"
there's nothing stopping me from running a web server on that port
or any other port

and configuring all the software talking to it to the same

but "running out" makes it sound like a finite resource and if you use it, the ip police will not burst into your house and drag you out in chains ;p
and once the initial connection is made you often have communication over many ports
 TCP 192.168.1.110:6645 ec2-52-201-140-212:https ESTABLISHED
  TCP 192.168.1.110:6652 ec2-52-87-151-152:https ESTABLISHED
  TCP 192.168.1.110:6655 ec2-54-169-143-1:https ESTABLISHED
  TCP 192.168.1.110:7395 stackoverflow:https ESTABLISHED
  TCP 192.168.1.110:8613 6:https ESTABLISHED
  TCP 192.168.1.110:8778 6:https ESTABLISHED
  TCP 192.168.1.110:9538 stackoverflow:https ESTABLISHED
  TCP 192.168.1.110:10381 stackoverflow:https ESTABLISHED
That's why you see stuff like this in netstat

ok so here registering a port from IANA simply means that "yes, we offer our services on this port but we don't own it in anyway"

7:26 AM
kinda
lol
AHAHAHAHAHA
 ************************************************************************
 * PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: *
 *                                                                      *
 * ASSIGNMENT OF A PORT NUMBER DOES NOT IN ANY WAY IMPLY AN *
 * ENDORSEMENT OF AN APPLICATION OR PRODUCT, AND THE FACT THAT NETWORK *
 * TRAFFIC IS FLOWING TO OR FROM A REGISTERED PORT DOES NOT MEAN THAT *
 * IT IS "GOOD" TRAFFIC, NOR THAT IT NECESSARILY CORRESPONDS TO THE *
@AlanWatch ^ The RFC says exactly that.
Oh
It might be used for things like a quick nmap scan
where it goes "this port is open, its probably foo"
Which comes back to "this is the wrong question"
(and ended up on an entirely unintended and entertaining tangent)
So, a registered port means "if people see something listening to this port, they're likely to assume its what its registered for"

7:42 AM
if I run a public server, do I need to register it with IANA to assign me a port or can I pick any random port from 1024 to 49151?

No. Yes
But the people running the client would need to know the port, if its not implicit
Actually, web servers are a great example.
There's a well known port - 80 that's implicit
or you have to add :XX at the end

Bob
@JourneymanGeek gah, now you've confused me
and I'm no longer sure of my 750D/760T choice :P

@Bob about ip addresses and ports or...? ;p

I'd go for the one with the proper front USB ports, and without the cd drive button.

@Bob top mounted ports suck

actually, the top ports might be less susceptible to getting snapped off...
@JourneymanGeek how so?

I've had it with my Nexus 9 turning off the attached USB device when the screen is off.

I need to reach up to put things in since its twice my height its on my desk
Prolly better if its on the floor, but front ports FTW

Bob
> First, I took my soldering iron and heat all MicroSD card metal contacts for approximately 10 seconds.
wat
@JourneymanGeek oh, mine's on the floor

I'd prefer front ports personally
10 seconds is... much too long.
and would met the plastic.
and what the whaaaaat?
!!what

Bob
why is he heating them at all?

Bob
why is a soldering iron involved?
I'm so confused

7:50 AM
@Bob too much plastic fumes.

Bob
> I thought if hot temperature caused the problem, it might be also the solution to it.
That's... interesting logic.

GOOMHB.

Bob
lol
your one probably would've sounded better

"Its like if you're gutshot and bleeding to death, so you shoot yourself in the gut to heal yourself"

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, that one sounds much better.
my god
it's on HNQ
it's a okay-ish question, a tad poor

7:55 AM
after being gut shot, you probably want to then shoot yourself in the head , if you want to stop the pain ;-0

Bob
all the answers are completely horribad

if you want to use a port, you MUST talk to the port Czar first tools.ietf.org/html/rfc349 Jon Postel , who probably died a few years ago.
because if your a computer science major at UCLA , then you know everything and should control all use of ports :-)

Bob
@Psycogeek If you follow the chain of obsoletions, it goes to tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3232

@Bob I could have made a homeopathy joke, but I'd need to water it down...

what got me when I was first making up my own IP range for local use was , people saying i couldnt use the 10.??,?? block for my home network because it was reserved for special peoples , at the time I was confused why everyone was using the same 192.168 type of routing, when (in my limited knowlege) the use of knowns would make it easy to hack into the next level of my routing,

8:07 AM
Actually it's cause few people need a bigger block.

They couldnt sufficiently explain how i was getting in anyones Way, or bothering anyone , when it was just the home connects. But they hd me convinced that the IP (internet police) would track me down :-) for using thier numbers :-)

Heck. Can't think of anyone here with more than 30 in use devices

Most home routers don't even support that many devices.
NETGEAR home routers, for example, have a limit of 32 clients per wireless band.
Even if it can, you'd be placing huge demands on the infrastructure well beyond what the hardware is designed to handle.
A large smart home may have a bunch of IoT devices on 2.4 GHz and several PCs and mobile devices on 5 GHz, but you'd be hard-pressed to put more than a few dozen devices on the network.

from what some people say about wireLESS 3 clients activly trying to do heavy i/o activity chokes the poor things alone.

MU-MIMO aims to address this.

8:19 AM
well even 3 people trying to pull the full bandwidth with Wires , something chokes.

Instead of just time-sharing the bandwidth and wasting the extra spatial streams (e.g. less than one-half of the bandwidth of a 4x4 MIMO is usable if your network consists of 1x1 and 2x2 devices only)...
...MU-MIMO lets multiple devices use the spatial streams simultaneously. A 4x4 MU-MIMO router can handle two 1x1 devices and a 2x2 device all at once without cycling through them round-robin.
It requires client support, although legacy devices will still communicate like they used to (technically known as time-division multiple access, or TDMA) without breaking MU-MIMO for capable clients. Essentially, MU-MIMO devices can still share time slices while legacy devices continue to get individial time slices.
@Psycogeek That's what QoS is for.

@Psycogeek with crappy consumer routers.... Yeah.

I think i used QOS, then a limiter, and after much research i ended up with, just waiting till the other user finished with full speed , in short time, then i would start and also finish in record time.,
sorta like using 2 programs that are 100% multithreaded, just let one finish. plus in that case the caches and all would be more effective.

I've never had any bandwidth contention issues with my Nighthawk X4S, an 802.11ac Wave 2 router with MU-MIMO support.

8:35 AM
did you have anyone who contended to need your whole bandwith at the same time as you were using it?
like cant most people stop thier torrents for a few minutes of pure speed?

I've streamed video at the same time as my running large Steam downloads with absolutely zero trouble.
Nov 25 at 0:17, by bwDraco
Dynamic QoS works as designed :)

they say at these RV park places with the WiFI in them is just not even usable at all. I wonder still if i can tromp on them, to get for Me me me, if only for short times.
like they open 6 connections, i open 100, choke them out of existance :-)
get finished up, and get back off thier nasty connections
that is important when the LTE 4 g or whatever costs 1 unborn child, and 2 kidneys

lol
It's getting way too late here. Nighty-night.

My D-Link would die if you looked at it funny. My Asus handles a few hundred gigs a month easy.
Depends on the router. And connection and many many things

The Nighthawk X4S aces the MU-MIMO test \o/

Bob
8:52 AM
@Psycogeek ...and now you understand that trying to use "unknown" IP addresses is effectively security by obscurity, yea?
@bwDraco that would be because netgear sucks

How?
I have not had any major problems with my unit.
