Q: Should really good/detailed "me too" answers have their content merged into the question?

Eliah KaganUsually "me too" answers don't contribute much to working on the problem, but sometimes they do, as when they present details that are subtly different than (or more detailed than) what is provided by the OP. It seems to me that this may be an instance of a "me too" answer that gives sufficiently...

The Planet Venus mailing list is dead. Like dead dead.
I sent an email over a week ago and haven't heard anything.

You want a full inbox, subscribe to Full-disclosure

A full inbox isn't the problem. I need them to answer my question :)

I realize. I was trying to make a joke and failing evidently

Er... lol?

@GeorgeEdison That's pretty funny

1:15 AM
stuck in a login loop in 12.04
anybody here to help?

That's not one I've experienced, but I remember seeing several questions that were resolved on the site

yep i have been through them and on looked around other forums as well since the past 4hrs but no luck

like on an auto-login? or...

This is my auth.log -
May 23 14:52:01 ubuntu-desktop lightdm: pam_unix(lightdm:session): session closed for user lightdm
May 23 14:52:02 ubuntu-desktop lightdm: pam_unix(lightdm:session): session opened for user angad by (uid=0)
May 23 14:52:02 ubuntu-desktop lightdm: pam_ck_connector(lightdm:session): nox11 mode, ignoring PAM_TTY :0
May 23 14:52:02 ubuntu-desktop sudo: pam_unix(sudo:auth): conversation failed
May 23 14:52:02 ubuntu-desktop sudo: pam_unix(sudo:auth): auth could not identify password for [angad]
May 23 14:52:02 ubuntu-desktop sudo: pam_unix(sudo:auth): conversation failed
and this seems like the culprit
pam_succeed_if(lightdm:auth): requirement "user ingroup nopasswdlogin" not met by user "angad"

a gui login user shouldn't be in nopasswdlogin. that will do it
you use the autologin feature to get passwordless login, no nopasswd. that's exclusively for terminal nopasswd users

1:25 AM
i am not using auto-login feature
i did not change any user groups
i just did an apt-get update and rebooted
*and an apt-get upgrade

ok. could be a goofed package upgrade i guess. have you ctl-alt-f1-ed and apt-get update/upgraded again to make sure everything is in sync?

did that
even reinstalled lightdm
switched to gdm as well to try, but same problem

USER=root concerns me. are you trying to get a gui as root?

nope
i was in ctr+alt+f1 tty where i was logged in as root
might have done a lightdm restart there

okay i'm out of ideas.

1:35 AM
just did a adduser angad nopasswdlogin
now the login screen lets me click on the login button without entering a password
but still has the login loop

all nopasswdlogin users will get kicked right back to the login screen. that i've seen myself

but i still get the dbus message

jrg
@ChanHoSuh Looks like the s3 mirrors are back up and running

jrg
1:54 AM
I take that back, it's 403'ing on me again

sigh
they were supposed to be working by now

jrg
only i386 restricted is 403'ing.
amd64 works fine
> W: Failed to fetch us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/precise/dists/main/restricted/… 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.183 80]
so it's not just the s3 mirrors that are having issues with restricted

i can browse that...looks like directories moved around or something
hi @blueXrider - long time no see

jrg
2:09 AM
Yeah, something like that @aking1012

@aking1012 yo buddy.........i know.....been busy
@jrg yo bro

jrg
@blueXrider whats up?

guys.......have a real job spending time at it now

jrg
well that's good!

sorry for not letting you all know
miss all you

jrg
2:11 AM
no it's fine. i figured something like that happened. :)

thanks

login loop still not solved :(

want to let you all know I got the swag and it's very cool
need to try to spend some quality time here though

jrg
oh good, I was wondering if Aarthi got that sent out.
@angadsg so you're having a lightdm login loop?

the tee just arrived here today.......thanks again

2:13 AM
@jrg yep

jrg
@angadsg chmod 777 /home/$yourname

tried a lot of things
wow
ok

jrg
(I know, kill me now for suggesting that, but it should work)

got to run but was just checking in

yeah

2:14 AM
@blueXrider glad you're enjoying the work

jrg
@blueXrider good to hear from you, enjoy the swag! You earned it. :)

@jrg sadly no
doesnt work

jrg
@angadsg weird, we must be/have been experiencing different bugs. :\

and i tried gdm as well
so it doesnt seem like a lightdm issue

jrg
weird

2:20 AM
should i be looking at some other logs as well?
alright gotta go
be back soon

2:35 AM

now i'm getting a 404. guess that's better than a 403, isn't it? ;P

oi vey

jrg
interesting
it appears that i have a faulty sources.list
@lazyPower you might get a kick out what i'm doing right now
i'm trying to port this straight ruby application to a jruby app

i recall seeing something about this on github

jrg
entirely possible

3:21 AM
@jrg with s3 I can't browse without getting "restricted" but wget has been working whenever I tried it.

jrg
@JohnSGruber interesting
at this point i'm just shrugging and leaving them alone for a little longer

@jrg i'm rewriting about 50 tests
\o/

jrg
@lazyPower what are you using? rspec?
(my favorite lately has been test::unit, the default)

nunit - this is .net code
i haven't had a ton of time to devote to ruby just yet - i graduate in 2 weeks.
time should pick up around then

jrg
ok, gotcha

3:25 AM
what degree?

jrg
i'm going to call it a night. this jruby code is slowly driving me insane. :S

i ripped apart the stock analysis api/graphing stuff to make it easier to work with...so i know exactly what you mean

@aking1012 Associate of Applied Science in Software Application Design and Programming
going back for my bach this winter

@aking1012 Yeah, gotta love that stuff. :P

3:29 AM
Because ITT Tech is expensive?

@lazyPower if you're any good with tagging out certifications wgu.edu/online_it_degrees/…
i finished a BS and an MS in 9 months

the only place that will accept my ITT Credits that i've found

yeah. that's a possible. i've heard ppl have that problem. the beauty of the wgu thing is that certs are about half the classes. so if you can nuke standardized tests you can get that rubber stamp crazy fast

well i'm out 6 months early
tested out of 2 full semesters worth of classes
rather proud of that

as you should be

3:32 AM
I'm meeting an insane amoutn of people that want .net developers
i really dont get it -- i didnt pick this path. I knew some mono and fell into what i'm doing now

I soooo despise dotnet, but it is a market force

I'm seriously considering looking for something on an open stack wiht a pay cut just to escape the corporate path i'm on
i really dont want to be a corporate programmer. I like startups, and their mentality

then you'll find this interesting

reward clever programming - shun the waterfall method

Yep, sucked in now
100k to drop out and engineer a better world? sounds like the 60's with a spin

If you watch the whole thing, they liken him to Howard Hughes
Brief aside, why did Windows make powershell instead of integrating python(or ruby if you're a ruby guy). Either one works, but look at other OSes and what scripting languages they adopt

why doesnt MS put more effort into supporting web standards?
who can explain an company that attempts to control patents with bully tactics and a large agenda

@jrg you closing this question cost me 2 rep. boo

:/ desire for proprietary?!?
@jokerdino not boo for the rep, boo because someone revived the project as noted in earlier chat logs and nobody posted it as an answer
look at the chat logs for the last 24 hours. you'll find something that works

i know about the new fork and i am using it.
i wonder what made him close this question after soo long.
and well, yeah the new answer should have been posted because it works OTB.
so, we should open the question, edit the title and make a new answer. :S

3:46 AM
it was a bug, it's not now. if you write up an answer and offer to CW it, they may reopen the question with that answer as a solution
that would be my approach

i would ask someone else to write the answer so they get some rep. why waste it?

because it's not a real answer, it's a pointer to another project

hmm it still answers the question, no?
the initial question of mine.
but well never mind.

@aking1012 thats interesting....
drop out of school, get a puppy

100k is a bit more than a puppy i think

3:49 AM
i am seeing a couple of worrying trends. people downvoting my answers, some unupvoting as well. :(
makes me not get much rep.

i started moving towards edits and such when most of the questions are bug reports. when precise stabalizes i may go back to answering questions

i should stop thinking about rep too much and get back to answering questions.
thanks for the reminder.

yeah, it's not necessarily about poor answer quality. i even recommended somone upboat another person's answer to a question that answered it better than i did earlier
i helped him screenshot it and got an upboat, so i left my answer there. the other answer should be ranked above mine though...and the OP hasn't accepted yet

fair call. i did recommend that to one of my answers as well.

flash is getting better, but it's still the bane of windows security
also banning dual booting/other bootloaders on windows phones has me quite upset

4:10 AM
@jokerdino when you stop caring about rep is when it starts to roll in
the trick is to always keep improving your answers
all the time

hi @JorgeCastro - I tried to be a little more delicate about it, but I think we're saying the same thing

treat your answers like wikipedia, always improving them

yes, i just stopped giving my rep too much attention.
it is taking the fun out of being here in AU. :/
i might tackle some questions over this weekend.

it really doesn't matter once you pass 3k

@JorgeCastro so from the look of things, I'm to push the AU lens into precise extras.u.c as soon as humanly possible, then we try & sort out what's happning for quantal?

4:13 AM
hell, if you want to try something hard, try giving away rep!
that's tough!
@ajmitch yeah, mark said it's just a small fix and no new features, so might as well get that in there

@JorgeCastro - I think you've given away more rep than I have

personally, i have decided a while ago to bounty questions once i hit 10k.
it seems to be that 10k tools give you a useful hand at managing the site.

@JorgeCastro I looked over the changes in the tree, there's nothing major there, mostly just compatibility stuff
dunno if I'll get to it tonight, but it should go up for vote & upload by the weekend

17.8k in bounties. :)

I'm a bad person, never put a bounty on anything :)

4:15 AM
so yes...roughly triple

@jokerdino oh yeah, that's right, those are useful
I want to end up giving away more rep than I have, I need like 3k to that though

finding it hard to get good questions or answers to bounty?

nice Samaritan award?

it's pretty much impossible unless it happens to bump on the front page
plus only 3 bounties at a time, and the time limitations on each one

well if you go under 3k, i'm quite sure you could have a Jorge said so chat room on the site where people would basically read your well founded flags/reports and click the buttons for you in higher quantity than you could individually anyway

4:18 AM
haha, that would be awesome.
thwart Jorge's plan to take over the planet.
Hmm I see a command line google drive client. for Linux.

morning all

@jokerdino it doesn't work very well
I've been messing with it tonight

ah, i am disappointed.

they said at UDS it would be soon
(the official client)
so I'm not too worried

oh, the official one! that would be awesome.

4:28 AM

u1? :D oh, you did mention them

little question on my part. How come certain commands autocomplete on pressing Tab while others don't? like I just used sudo apache2ctl configtest. The configtest part didn't autocomplete.. :(

congrats!

heh thanks :)

@ShyamK Unconfigured bash will not complete commands after you've typed a command (like sudo), only file paths. Put the following as a line in your .bashrc: complete -cf sudo

6:37 AM
you know, i was reading about help vamps earlier..

what is this help vamps you speak of?

was that a genuine question?

will you think less of me if I say yes?

i couldn't figure it you were sarcastic.

Fair enough - I am rather sarcastic

6:43 AM
;-)
i was checking if I am one of the help vamps. That's all.

7:39 AM
you're not one of the help vamps. i'm sure we all know one though

@aking1012 that's a little nice to hear. i was of the same opinion about myself.

oh oh. sorry about that. did you ever come to this room before?

1 hour later…

@jokerdino I've been hanging out for a while. I thought I should diversify my chatroom selection :)

10:49 AM
@jrg I have taken the first step to fix the mess - askubuntu.com/questions/141606/…
@OliverSalzburg heh always appreciated.
@jrg I have documented what I have done to solve the problem. Hopefully that stays as a canonical question...
hey @Mahesh how ya doing

allz well. looking at our meta, transcripts and drupal.
btw nyone has hands-on experience with drupal?'

alright, time for dinner.. see ya

btw @jokerdino was your problem fixed?

Eh, I've been working my way through "Using Drupal" for the past couple weeks. So technically yes, I have hands on experience, but it's pretty elementary. I might be able to answer some questions though, or at least point in the right direction....
@Mahesh above post should have been a reply to this. first time using chat :P

using lampp or have packages installed?
@adempewolff Welcome here! :D

11:01 AM
Thanks! You mean did I install my lamp server as a meta package or with the individual packages?

@adempewolff do we have a meta package?
i download the tarball and xtract it into /opt

@Mahesh I think lamp-server is a metapackage
I used tasksel though

ok. will check it out.
lemme google tasksel

although make sure not to remove anything using tasksel, there is a bug and it will break things
Theres a really good how-to somewhere for setting drupal up in a (Ubuntu) local development environment somewhere, lemme see if I can find the link
bah humbug, it's favorited on a browser in a virtualmachine... gotta go boot it up

ok. i love apt-get and will live with it for now.
@adempewolff lol, have your bookmarks synced

11:10 AM
@Mahesh actually, seeing as how the Stack Alert applet automatically installed itself on the chromium there, I think they already might be....
@Mahesh Okay, I think I actually just combined the portions I like of every how-to I saw into one how-to in my head as I'm not finding this how to

@adempewolff Parser error: Too many How tos :P

basically if you just use tasksel for the lamp server, then follow this sites.google.com/site/theidealdrupalenvironment, skipping the steps for things you don't need, you should be set
to make drupal work you just need a lamp server, vsftpd, phpmyadmin (unless you enjoy playing with your mySQL databases by hand) and a .tar.gz of drupal core
configuring apache and the vsftpd servers can be a little interesting but this how-to is really nice for the former friendlydrupal.com/screencasts/…

vsftpd??

ftp server
drupal updates itself through ftp

ok but do i need it?

11:21 AM
you could also do updates by hand, by when you have a lot of modules it becomes a pain

ok, so this is updating of drupal from net ure talking about..?

I virtualize my drupal environment so I don't need to worry about having an ftp server running on my main machine

and how do you do that?

kind of but not really. Drupal will automatically download updates and install new modules from the net, or from local files.
but to install the files it needs ftp access
to create the new directories/files/etc

hmm... on the local machine?

11:24 AM
yes
here's a decent how-to for that

so it opens an ftp connection to my machine, a loopback, and does the job.

essentially, yes

ok. huff

which is much more secure than giving the www-data group write access to your directories....
you will see a scary message when you update warning you that your connection isn't encrypted and your ftp password is being sent in plaintext. but since it is just a local connection, it's not really a problem

ok. :)
drupal has a lot to offer.

11:30 AM
yeah, I'm pretty anxious to get it under my belt.
I am having some problems with web 2.0 integration modules though as I live in China so all these sites are naturally blocked
sending browser traffic through an ssh tunnel to a server in a closet at my parent's house in the US is a cakewalk, but getting apache to send external traffic (and more importantly, dns requests) through that tunnel is a huge pain

@Mahesh yep, the solution is posted on AU

i'm new to this stuff. jus exploring my ways.
@jokerdino have a link handy?

@Mahesh well good luck. If you run into any trouble configuring it on Ubuntu post a question (given that it hasn't already been asked :P) and I can probably help you. I'm off to dinner now

@adempewolff :) Sure.

11:38 AM
How to teach firefox to open rar archives http://askubuntu.com/questions/141574/how-to-teach-firefox-to-open-rar-archives?atw=1 #firefox

@jokerdino meh! I should've guessed that.

err. ubuntu configuration specific questions of course... heh

but a nice, clean solution.

you don't know how much i complicated matters to solve that.
after ending up with that screen, i downloaded gdm 32bit and tried installing it by accident.

11:40 AM
lol
and?

that broke the apt and then had to resolve dns errors by chrooting from a live cd

chrooting saved you ! :D

after fixing apt, then i had to install pantheon-greeter again to have a working GUI.

and i should have warned u.

and then i figured how to remove pantheon-greeter without ending up with that error.

11:41 AM
apt-get -d getss deb matching default architechture.

i might have summarized it making it sound simple and easy but go through the transcript. i was panicking all around.
i didn't know how to resolve dns, i was lost trying to install lynx, i had no idea how to mount a usb drive from terminal, i couldn't figure out how to connect to network from terminal, etc
it consumed a lot of energy and resources.
i (and the swathe of helpers here in chat) was pretty drained by the time it was solved.
it was terrible. if i knew the solution was that simple, i wouldn't be crying by now.
the dudes who is going to benefit from my solution has it so much easy.
i went pretty close to reinstalling ubuntu to fix my problem.
i should stop this monologue. NOW.

hmm...
i was silent coz u'll either cry or kill me if i say something funny then. :P

yeah yeah :P

hey wait!

but nice to fix the problem anyway.

11:46 AM
did we not reinstall lightdm?

it was the greeter. not lightdm
like unity-greeter, pantheon-greeter, etc

coz if we purged and installed it, that should also ssolve.
no. i'm talking of lightdm

the thing is, the conf file was still there.
it leaves /etc/lightdm because it is not empty

why is that so? purge is supposed to remove conf files, right?
ok.

i don't know. you might want to try and check if that is the case.

11:48 AM
wait. we did a install --reinstall i guess.
or did we do that even?

yeah i think so
i don't quite remember what we did

if install --reinstall is what we did, that wouldn't work. coz conf files are retained then.
anyway, good to see it solved. :)

actually, i think i removed lightdm and we were failing chroot.
i removed all DM and then broke apt.
haha, that is what i did. i messed up every way possible.
but well i fixed it. that's nice

:)
and if you had installed gdm, properly, it should also have worked.

i removed it as well, remember?

11:52 AM
yup.
i'm talking of reinstalling it

oh hmm yeah

hmm.....
