Q: A Striking Resemblance (no.2)

PerpetualJI didn’t explain how the first one worked as to prevent it from being to easy; the way these riddles work is that I supply as many synonyms to a word as possible (within reason) to narrow down your search for a single word. I feel lazy tonight, laidback but alright, eating some dinner fed on ...

@GentlePurpleRain Yes, that's it!
In hindsight, I should probably have used sanity instead of vanity, which fits better with curses that need to be lifted, but my first idea was to replace the V with the F, not to just scrap it.
@EricTressler Yes, COMMUNES seemed very likely and the MM was moreor less a given. I first thought that "cycling" would be a plain old anagrind or an inclusion indicator, but then I saw the light ...

CCCC: Withhold pay from November first; caught in tawdry embellishment. (7)

4:39 PM
@GentlePurpleRain it's GAR(N)ISH, for both withhold pay and embellishment?
I don't know how that works, it's like both ends are the def. and neither is involved in the wordplay (November first caught in tawdry)

@EricTressler It was my attempt a triple clue. You are correct. There are two definitions and a wordplay.

I didn't even know that was allowed

I don't know if it is...

It is

I've come across one part def and two parts wordplay, but I don't see why def, wordplay, def shouldn't be allowed.

4:48 PM
I take it's only required to have a definition?
Has word-splitting been used here yet? As in "lessen" = "subtract EN"

It probably has, but lessen = less en is rather iffy, because en isn't really a word. The classical example is probably indeed = in deed.

Ah, good point about "en". Thanks.

CCCC: Spread for hybrid covers counter class (10)
I should work on a couple with reasonable surface readings. I don't know how long that might take.

7:22 PM
@MOehm "en" certainly is a word, meaning the letter N and also a typographical unit of width corresponding notionally to that of the letter N.

Touché.
(But I'm still not convinced of less-en as a good candidate for a lift-and-separate clue.)

"en route" could stand for "n" -- "en" (rout "e")

7:38 PM
No, I don't like "lessen" to mean "minus EN" either.

So I take it "fort" for "t" is just right out

no, "fort" would make "fot" if it were right out

That split was used almost exactly by me in a clue for FORLORN, a while back; the general opinion was that the split of "form"/"for M" was a never-use-again, I'm afraid

That's true. Sorry for this nonsense cryptic; since then, I've written a couple that at least have reasonable surface readings.
