Good morning y'all

Anyone have the URL to the QA blog post on "What is a programmer's favourite food" being off topic and not on topic just because it happens to mention programmers
Google fu failing
Hmm, apparently it's good subjective, bad subjective but not quite how I remembered the reference

Q: Am I compensated by the electricity company for electricity that exits my home on the neutral wire?

UA412DISCLAIMER: I am not an electrician or electrical engineer. Let's say that all I have running in my home is a 10 watt LED light bulb (nothing else). This bulb uses very little of the electricity coming into my home and most of it exits my home on the neutral wire. Does the electricity company ...

> Nevertheless the common basic things in maintaining servers are required to be set up. Mainly you will need a container for each host to do the following:
> Entropy Generation (especially for cloud servers) — container
> Without doing so, if you are using an authentication system or SSL, entropy will slow things down to the halt at some point. Alternatively, log rotation is favorable to ensure that your server does not run out of file space due to logs.
I get "log rotation", but WTF is "entropy generation", why is it important and why not having it will allow my servers tô a halt?

HAMMERZEIT!

12:29 PM
I m feeling very dumb and I don't like it.

@ThatBrazilianGuy entropy generation = noise and used for creating random numbers
using a seperate container for it seems... odd...

Like the "move your mouse or type random stuff" in truecrypt and ssh-keygen?
@JourneymanGeek It's from an article about common gotchas in Docker infrastructures.

@JourneymanGeek But if my LAMP webserver lacks this stuff it will get progressively slower...? How?

Q: Not enough entropy to support /dev/random in docker containers running in boot2docker

mbonatoRunning out of entropy in virtualized Linux systems seems to be a common problem (e.g. /dev/random Extremely Slow?, Getting linux to buffer /dev/random). Despite of using a hardware random number generator (HRNG) the use of a an entropy gathering daemon like HAVEGED is often suggested. However an...

12:33 PM
It needs entropy to do RNG stuff (eg SSL)

because it will wait for a longer time to do stuff that needs random stuff, until the entropy pool fills uo

Oh my, that topbar looks naked without the inbox notification a-glowin' in red

@bertieb ping?

@JourneymanGeek Good thought, only works if I'm not in chat to read the ping AFAICT

12:34 PM
Takes a while to filter through also
I wonder if there's a 'mark unread' feature in the API...

@JourneymanGeek What are common things that needs random entropy?

@ThatBrazilianGuy anything involving crypto? ;p
tbh, as someone who hasn't really wrapped their head around containers - its not an issue that has bitten me in the rear often

We - as in our tiny team in our huuuuuuuge Trump gesture organization - started using it as handy dev environment generators, and now we started using it in our "shadow IT" infrastructure as production envs

!!s/huu/yuu/

@bertieb We - as in our tiny team in our yuuuuuuuge Trump gesture organization - started using it as handy dev environment generators, and now we started using it in our "shadow IT" infrastructure as production envs (source)

12:41 PM
Weseverely reduced the time we had to wait for the infrastructure team to create app instances (most of the time with wrong configs)
"You guys fuck up all the time. Just give us a VM and let us do it ourselves".

what is a Trump gesture organization?

So now we have a 2 core, 8GB VM to host 10 sites (and growing)

@ThatBrazilianGuy holy hell

@allquixotic It builds a firewall and makes the hackers pay
@allquixotic oOh I said 8 GB? Sorry, my mistake. It's 4.

holy SHIT

12:44 PM
(Raised to 6 after a few months of asking)

for 10 websites?!

Let me check.
Yesterday they graced us with a third core and 2 extra GB of RAM (no extra swap, tho)

._.
I'd actually more ram than swap
and eh

When we tried to start an elasticsearch container, bam, half RAM gone

That's not as bad as work

12:55 PM
Meanwhile the other team with 30+ devs has a single app that needs 16 GB of RAM to just start.
But it's enterprisey

is this your production environment? ... don't tell me; you don't have any other environments because money

Bingo!
We've been asking for an homologation eng but it falls on deaf ears.

@allquixotic .... I've not ever heard of a testing environment at work, come to think of it

Our homologation env will probably be different containers in this same machine
@allquixotic Our money issues goes way beyond mere lack of it.
For instance:
Five years with a shitty Phenom II X2 and 4GB of RAM
No mice replacements
But secretaries get i7s
When law deadlines come close our team is expected to drop everything and save the world, but we've been asking for new hires for years; this year there were dozens of new IT hires, not a single one came to our team.
@JourneymanGeek Your servers at work are worse than that? :-o

@ThatBrazilianGuy see PII

I haven't opened Riot since my vacations...

@ThatBrazilianGuy because secretaries are hot?

@JourneymanGeek Been meaning to read all the backlog there (ha!)
@allquixotic If you are into old ladies, sure.
JK, there are a few old ladies, but most are regular-looking non-old ladies
The student trainees, OTOH...
Specially at my older team.

@ThatBrazilianGuy what about them?

Not old and really not regular looking ladies.

1:25 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy very pretty?

That's the implication

aha.
I miss interacting with people (especially good-looking people) since I work from home all the time now :|

I miss social interaction with people on non-working environments.
I'd love the chance of working from home
As for good looking people, interaction with them is pleasant, but ultimately pointless.
I'm married to a (despite her saying otherwise) quite pretty lady miself
(She denies being pretty, not being married to me)
And even when I wasn't, good looking people tended to ignore me romantically
And some good looking people are snobs
I'd rather be surrounded by regular looking, smart and funny people

so the cat has been disposed of

Huh. Now the bus I take to work and back has WiFi and USB chargers

@ThatBrazilianGuy bro wut

@ThatBrazilianGuy thats pretty standard here in the UK

Here we mostly don't get the luxury of air conditioning
@rahuldottech What?

2:02 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy wifi is unheard of in buses here
usb chargers are found rarely

@rahuldottech I've seen either WiFi or a few USB chargers on some long distance buses (those you take at big bus stations)

@ThatBrazilianGuy I've seen USB on long distance buses, never WiFi

But this week this bus I take started providing free WiFi and one USB outlets per seat. No extra charge.
(we already pay an arm and a leg)
I'd trade all WiFi in the world for air conditioning in the Brazilian summer

@ThatBrazilianGuy we have the latter here for free now ;)
only on newer buses

You live in a country with an hotel with a boat on top. You don't count.

2:08 PM
and fairly common public wifi
except where I work

@ThatBrazilianGuy We have AC buses here!

@rahuldottech we've had that for years ;)
I haven't seen a non AC bus in ages in fact

@JourneymanGeek We've had that since like 2010 for local buses. Decades for long-distance buses
@JourneymanGeek I love Singaporean buses
I've been to Singapore like six times or something. SMRT is really cool too!
Way less crowded than Delhi Metro, unsurprisingly

@rahuldottech So do we * RND (0.05)
@rahuldottech Look ar Rahul, all cosmopolitan and cool

@ThatBrazilianGuy those were good days :)
Then the whole family split happened
Hopefully I'll be travelling quite a bit as a student tho :)

2:32 PM
Student... Money for travel... In the same sentence?
Now there's one thing most nationalities can agree sounds weird

@ThatBrazilianGuy I have plans
Dunno if any will work out
But let's see

@ThatBrazilianGuy Right?
I'm a student and I barely have enough money for food
(mark down in price on short-dated things at the cheap supermarkets are a godsend)
But anyhoo
gg Brazil for protecting the whales
But what the heck is going on with your politics
I mean, not that our politics is exactly the model of sanity or anything, but that's another story

Hmmm. Removing old docker containers and images from my dev machine freed up like 20 GB (or 40% of my root mount)

4:43 PM
good evening mates...
I tried to install Ubuntu 16.04.(5?) today alongside Win 10, in UEFI mode. The installation got stuck after the partitioning step where it starts to install Ubuntu.
Where it got into some kind of loop, with the logs showing "Warning: Source ID xxxxx was not found when attempting to remove it" and then calling some function then showing this warning again.
This guy seems to have the same problem.
Anyone knows how to solve this?

5:05 PM
Folks, if you were seeing me repeatedly launch Ys VIII, it's because I've been testing Steam In-Home Streaming.
It seems like 20 Mbps is the best compromise between latency and quality on this network...
And on the server (host) side, using Change desktop resolution to match streaming client prevents scaling artifacts from appearing on the client machine.

5:23 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy If you want to delete all exited containers (don't think this is what you want):
docker rm $(docker ps -qf "status=exited")

@bwDraco In this very specific case, yeah, I achieved the same thing thru different commands. Removed every stopped container, then every unused volume and image.
docker prune is interesting as well.

Hi, so, um, I kind of struggle to undersand what format most data scientists use for dataset management.
Like, I'm aware of CSV and like SQL dBs but I don't think that's the industry standard.
I'm making a product recommender, so I need a huge dataset of products.
I think APIs will spit out JSON through postmaster.

you don't think SQL is industry standard for managing databases?

@Burgi Well, it's been so long. I mean this is no longer the era of flip phones and floppy drives, right?

have you bumped your head or something?

As I was saying, I could clean the JSON packets to CSV and then do data analysis with Python, heck even VBScript.
This can't be modern production level though.

python and vbscript are just wrappers. they execute SQL commands against the database
databases are monolithic applications

7:20 PM
@Burgi uh, I'm pretty sure excel sheets have different support schemes.
@Burgi uh, you can't derive views from real monoliths though. Not all dBs are locked and atomic.

someone else can have this argument with you. i'm not in the mood

don't worry, I'm there to argue with myself.

Wooo
just rooted another box

Q: How to rename the file name with PowerShell

yodeI have a such files in the current directory Now I want to plus 2 in the file base name when the base name is even number. I mean I hope 000252.png → 000254.png 000254.png → 000256.png 000256.png → 000258.png This is what I want to get How to use PowerShell to implement it?

@RogUE You should ask a question on the main site ...

ok, I will keep remember.

@allquixotic bars/pubs/bookshops/cafes/etc.

bars/pubs: Not for me. I'm a computer-loving nerd. All I'd do is sit there on my laptop, and *if I'm lucky* not get harassed by some annoying/offensive guys.
bookshops: if you're not there to buy books, you're loitering and they can/will kick you out. Their Internet also sucks.
cafes: if you're not there to buy food and drink, you're loitering and they can/will kick you out. Their Internet also sucks.

@allquixotic The social and friendly bookshops and cafes then
Book/reading clubs?

@rahuldottech except I'm not really into reading books, so why go there and pretend I am?

@allquixotic Well, then, some other club or workshop where you can meet people

the window has closed on me; I'm a lifelong incel at this point
(I say that partly in mockery of the term "incel" itself, and partly serious)

9:38 PM
@allquixotic C'mon.
Non-profits/seminars/shows/performances/seminars/hackathons (!)/etc.
You can still meet people
And you most definitely should

non-profits? like what?
seminars: I've gone to a few "conventions" for work, but work paid for them, and now they're not anymore.
shows/performances: expensive, and everyone always brings their bf/gf to those
hackathons: none occur in my city, or the ones that do are total sausagefests and usually way over my head (high-end data analytics and such)

@allquixotic i think things are different here in the UK

I think I just hate people

cafes: as long as you buy something to drink every hour or so you are fine
Bookshops: yeah these don't tend to be good places to work
bars/pubs: you can buy coffee/tea in most and as long as you aren't there at 9pm on a friday trying to work no-one will harass you

@allquixotic You can volunteer at non-profits
@allquixotic My point here is that you can totally find places to go and meet people. If you know people nearby, you can also ask them to introduce you to others.
FFS, go to a dog park
Or like, a regular park
Or a gym. Or yoga classes. Or idk, church (??)
1. Become an alcoholic 2. Go to AA meetings 3. Make friends!
/s

9:50 PM
yoga classes are always full of women
i don't understand why

Because not enough guys are into yoga

hmm... brb upset girlfriend
i think she was hoping to adopt a little kitten today but it has been removed...

@Burgi get a kitty for her! Win her heart!
I'm going to get a kitty as soon as my exams get over
And then I will spam you guys with pictures for like a month till my enthusiasm dies down a little

10:27 PM
Managed to get an uncirculated roll of dollar coins from the bank. It's been years since I last got one.
(because I need them for the bus)
2000-P Sacagawea dollars. They show a bit of dirt from storage, but the mint luster is intact and there's no sign of circulation wear.
In any case, I'm not really trying to collect them. I actually need to use them.
Last I checked, the Mint still has loads of these coins sitting in storage and are slowly releasing them for circulation. They're currently minted only for collectors due to the large stockpile.
The last few rolls I got had previously circulated coins, and I've found it exceedingly difficult to even get complete rolls of 25, only getting loose coins instead.

11:18 PM
Why do you need uncirculated coins?
Oh.

Okay so
I'm working on the biggest project that I have ever worked on
Like, ever
And man, this is exhausing

Tell me about it.

I mean, I wrote up quite a bit today. But I'm afraid that when I come back tomorrow I'll have lost track of where I was and how much and what I wrote

To spend hours a day working on a massive paper and not be able to make real progress on it is unbelievably frustrating. #GradSchoolProblems

@bwDraco lol, you're working on a grad school paper
I'm talking about a programming project
