Q: Did Picard know who Guinan was when he took command of the *Enterprise*?

Dr SheldonThe events of "Time's Arrow" clearly indicate that Guinan knows who Picard is when he takes command of the Enterprise. But is the converse true: does Picard know who Guinan is at that time? What is Guinan and Picard’s history? is related, but has several conflicting answers, some of which also ...

Q: Help me identify Anime From movie preview. 90's or early '00s

gigiWhen I was young there was a preview for a cartoon that I am certain was anime style. I've thought about it a ton since. BuzzThe Warriors is a 1979 film (with a 2005 home re-release that adds comic book transitions between scenes) that takes place in New York City that is full of peculiar gangs. That Smokey chat post doesn't look much self-deleted.

9:43 AM
FWIW, I flagged Smokey's post in the hope that it will get it deleted faster - I'm not sure how the thing works.
But IIRC we wanted Smokey's post to self-delete quickly (in TREU at least), so that'll need a bit of work apparently.

9:58 AM
@SmokeDetector That should be self-deleted, because the post's already gone.
sigh Silly bot.
@SQB @Mithrandir ^ See, that's why it's bad to have Smokey in here.
For two hours, any newcomer to the room could have thought, "oh, what's this SFF chat thing about? ah, it's about posting links to spam and abuse, lovely!"

10:10 AM
Partially related. Is there a Main Meta discussion about removing the last activity indicator from the homepage?
I can't seem to find one but history made me realize I sucked at looking for stuff on Meta
Poke @Randal'Thor
Since for instance, the username stays on the homepage even if the post/account's been deleted
Not sure if a "I did naughty things to your momma" username is really a neat thing to have on the homepage.

@Jenayah The username doesn't stay if the account's been deleted.
If you refresh the homepage now, by the Nazgul question it says "modified 1 hour ago Community♦ 1"

@Randal'Thor aye indeed.
So who decides which spam/RA account gets deleted?

Mods, basically.

"Itookapissinibiza" is still there for instance. Not the worst username, granted, but likely to have posted dubious stuff

I usually destroy accounts that posted spam/abuse, if they have no positive contributions to the site.
Sometimes high-rep users flag the spam post after it's been deleted to ask for destruction of the user.

10:20 AM
Not pointing fingers to Ibiza guy especially, but that thing should be automated if there's a bad keyword in username of stuff, no? Mods don't live here ;)

@Jenayah Fixed that.
Automating destruction of user accounts could be a really bad thing. A false positive is much worse than a false negative in this case.
Like "oops, we destroyed a high-rep user's account because they posted something with spammy-sounding keywords in it".
Even the SmokeDetector crew don't entirely automate the deletion of spam posts: the bot detects and reports them, but humans are needed to destroy them.

No, I meant after the post is deleted.

And deletion of posts is reversible. Deletion of accounts isn't.

And not necessarily deleting account actually, just changing the last activity indicator

Not sure what you mean by changing the last activity indicator?
Like, removing the bumped post from the homepage?
Ah, if only we had the power to 'unbump' recently bumped posts. Would make mass-editing so much easier :-P

10:23 AM
From "3 hours ago - naughty username" to "3 hours ago - Community" or whatever, just changing the displayed text.

Ah, but that would require automatically detecting what's a naughty username.
Again it's easy for mods to reset someone's username, even without destroying the account. But it's not an automated process.
I suppose "automatically reset to default the username of anyone whose post is deleted as spam/abusive" could be an interesting feature request for meta.

@Randal'Thor well as far as I'm concerned, the username could be John Smith all the same. All deleted spam/RA would fall under that category

It's not likely to impact any genuine users, and those who make abusive posts may well also make abusive usernames.

Oh yeah right, changing that back to user123456
Not offensive, probably revertible
I'm surprised it's not already on Meta, but I might be searching wrong

10:42 AM
Is there some kind of a sandbox for Meta?

SQB
@Randal'Thor really? If I were a new user, I'd think "oh, so they're keeping an eye on what gets posted, to try and remove rubbish, cool!"

I suppose at least it does say "bad keyword in answer", rather than just posting a link without context.

@SQB random situation I think about: kid goes in TREU. Kid is aware of what a feed is, know that it's monitoring, well kid is a 2000s kid, no problem.

Anyway I just deleted those two Smokey posts, since apparently the bot isn't self-deleting (cc @Mithrandir)

Now the mother of that kid likes to take a peek to where he's been. Unfortunately, the kid's mother doesn't understand a thing of that. Kid gets in trouble for going to toxic sites.
My point is that it's not only the actual users... Transcript is public, and if the deletion isn't a thing, it's even more public

@Jenayah 2 seconds that time! At least we were saying different things in our comments, so there was no redundancy :-D

Q: Why did Newt go in through No-Maj customs?

user103390Why did Newt go in through No-Maj customs? There should be a wizarding checkpoint, right?

6:55 PM
@Jenayah btw regular flags shouldn't be used on the Smokey reports; a mod flag would be better

@Mithrandir no mod flags on mobile :/

Regular flags end with the user getting automatically suspended if it's validated. With Smokey, that would not be a good thing :)

Hey, self-answering is ok when it actually brings new info, but do we have a policy on posting and self-answering when the question is partly already covered elsewhere, with the same quote for an answer, but it's phrasing don't exactly make it a dupe?
@Mithrandir won't flag Smokey again anyways, that was merely because it was the first time that issue was around
