Back from the mass. :)

@PauloCereda Back from the world's biggest cruise ship launch ;-)

@StefanKottwitz Wow!!!!! Any pictures?! :D

@StefanKottwitz Amazing!

That's how we celebrate :-)

12:15 AM
Holy guacamole!
I wanna be German. <3

You are invited!
Don't wonder why the ships look similar: we use macros.
3

@StefanKottwitz \ship{1} :)

@PauloCereda \refstepcounter{ship}

@StefanKottwitz LOL

number 10 is currently expanding, \@firstoftwo is \futurelet in Japan starting 2013

12:25 AM
Wow.
They are really big.
In other news, gotta love sending messages to mailing lists:
Oops, my bad. I blame the tea -- I ran out of coffee. :) It wouldn't be me if I didn't make any classic mistake on every release of my translation. It seems it's now a tradition in the tl-doc list. :)

@PauloCereda It's technically interesting VOD, VOIP, WiFi everywhere, a huge complex network on each ship

@StefanKottwitz I imagine the whole structure they have: routers, switches, servers, APs...

@PauloCereda VSAT over several antennas and bands, firewall cluster, redundant core switches, distribution switch stacks in each fire zone, access switches for the >1000 cabins with VOIP phones, IP TV, LAN, WiFi.
Need TikZ to explain it.

@StefanKottwitz WOW! I'm scared to ask about the bandwidth. :P

Don't :-D Locally it's gigabit, but over satellite don't ask ... in each German port we installed landlines with up to 100 Mbit/s though with WiFi (mesh) bridges to ships in ports - well, I did. Further ports in progress.

12:40 AM
Awesome!

8 hours later…

Is this a XY-question or just not detailed enough?

Q: I can't move my box I made

jakHere is the problem, I made a box using \begin{tabular}[b]{|l|} \hline example \\ \hline \end{tabular} I have the [b] meaning bottom, but the position never changes ... In general how do I manipulate the box to where I want it to be? Please no fancy packages to install, I am new to this stuff...

I already commented and retagged it.

@MartinScharrer looks that way

@JosephWright: Great update of the svn-trunk ;-)

@MarcoDaniel We have quite a lot outstanding: @frankmittelbach has done a review of the interfaces, and we want to tidy up a bit
I'm working through everything: once the TL2012 DVD is frozen, expect a CTAN update!

@JosephWright I think this renaming is more than useful.
@JosephWright Your guys do a great job.

@MarcoDaniel As I say, there are a few more that we still have to agree one

9:11 AM
@JosephWright Please have a look at the following question: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/55614/… -- Should I remove this?
@lockstep: You are the fastest "tag-er" ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Looks okay to me

@JosephWright I can't test a small windows script. :-(

@MarcoDaniel Most Windows users will probably download the GUI version of SVN, so it's not appropriate anyway. I use the command line version, but that is not typical

@JosephWright Which gui do you recommend? Maybe will I add a small hint.

@MarcoDaniel TortoiseSVN is the 'standard' version on Windows. I use SilkSVN, which has the same core developer but is command line based.
I wonder if I should look into creating nightlies? The question would be where to host them - perhaps texdev.net?

9:29 AM
@JosephWright What are "nightlies"?

@MarcoDaniel That's where you make some form of installable code bundle automatically without any testing. For us, it would be a TDS zip of whatever state LaTeX3 was in each day.
You get nightly binary builds for a lot of open source projects
Not sure it's worth it, as building LaTeX code is a lot easier than building binaries

@JosephWright Sounds logical. I think it's a great Idea whereby files older than 6 month (max) can be removed ;-)

@MarcoDaniel I'll look into it

@MarcoDaniel Some questions just beg for certain tags. :-)

In it I found: \RequirePackage{latin1} Besides it looks pretty cryptic, but could not find anything else with latin1 in it. My docu...

@MarcoDaniel done

@MartinScharrer Thanks

10:37 AM
@JosephWright I have the same workflow. :) SlikSVN is IMHO the best SVN client for Windows. :)

@MarcoDaniel \expandafter{a= would expand "a" to itself?
@PauloCereda I don't trust any of these windows clients, I just use cygwin command line svn

@DavidCarlisle Really? I thought \expandafter works for the whole group.

@MarcoDaniel nope it steps past 1 token and expands one token { and a in this case. (I'd answer the queation but mum just phoned from the motorway saying she'll be here for dinner in a bit, and mums come first even when you're old:-)

@DavidCarlisle Today is "Mom's day" ;-) in Germany

@DavidCarlisle Indeed. :) IMHO the problem resides in the GUI versions: they are really bloated and all of them try to add fancy stuff to "blend" into Windows. I'd say SlikSVN is the lesser of two evils. I have a friend who once installed all possible Tortoises (SVN, Git, CVS, HG) in Windows. Needless to say, soon the OS became unusable. :)
@MarcoDaniel In Brazil too. :)

10:44 AM
@PauloCereda ;-) I will phone my mum later.

@MarcoDaniel No time now, unfortunately.

@egreg Maybe later? I am interested in understanding the solution because the example above works.

Hmm
Anybody participating in DropQuest 2012?

11:06 AM
@MarcoDaniel It would work also without the last \expandafter

11:23 AM
Mass time! :)

11:48 AM
Hello folks!

12:10 PM
@KannappanSampath Please add a mwe.

12:28 PM
I came home to get a songsheet. The mass is in the homily now. :P
Our Lady of Fatima, yay! :D

I received my first question downvote ... :-(

@lockstep Which question?

@MarcoDaniel

Q: Why does the LaTeX kernel define \usepackage *and* \RequirePackage?

lockstepThe ubiquitous \usepackage command is used to load packages in the preamble of a document; the command syntax is \usepackage[<package-option-list>]{<package-list>}[<version>] Actually, \usepackage is derived from the \RequirePackage command which, according to source2e, secti...

@lockstep = 7*5-1*5=6*5=30>0 q.e.d.
;-)

@MarcoDaniel Thanks, but I'm still wondering about the possible downvote motive. Because there's a related question (though hopefully not a duplicate)?

12:39 PM
@frankmittelbach: You should be the ideal person to answer @lockstep's question mentioned above

1:03 PM
@MartinScharrer FYI According to Kopka/Daly, loading "packages" in LaTeX 2.09 was done using the optional argument of \documentstyle, e.g. \documentstyle[12pt,parskip,makeidx]{article}.

@lockstep Ah, good to know!

@MartinScharrer I'm still leaning towards your "educational" theory. If Frank Mittelbach doesn't come up with a more in-depth answer, I'm going to acccept your one.

@lockstep Yeah! ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Done now!
OK. I figured it out! @egreg and @MartinScharrer Thanks to both of you,

Q: Undefined control sequence in LaTeX file

agaThis year I decided to write my term paper with LaTeX. Not really a great question, is it

leo
hi there
@KannappanSampath hi. Glad to see you

@JosephWright Borderline. Might be closed as "too localized".

@leo Hello
@lockstep Yes, it looks a bit that way: I guess pdftex versus pdflatex

leo
one quick question: How can I change the header in a amsart?
I have tried fancyhdr but the style of the header seems very different from the style of the article

2:11 PM
@egreg "How do you think we can guess what packages you're using?" By answering and getting comments back, of course; repeat as needed until you discover Jane is using your favourite package. :)

@leo fancyhdr allows you to set the header. So if you don't like the style you can change it. ;-)

leo
sure
I'm trying to imitate the style of the default header
thanks

Q: How do I update my TeX distribution?

cmhughesI'm trying to compile a document that only works with an up-to-date distribution, so I'd like to know: how do I update my distribution? This question is Community Wiki, so as an initial proposal, how about we have one answer per distribution, and perhaps per operating system? Please also provide...

:)

2:44 PM
I'm really happy I added the 'A', 'B', 'C' images in mwe:
Very useful for sub-figures and related figures etc.

@MartinScharrer great demo, I like that the images can be used without necessarily loading the mwe package

@cmhughes Well, there is not much what a package can do to make images loadable. They have to be in the correct position TEXMF anyway.
The image above is from my recent answer:

A: Placing Figure on an Odd/Even Page

Martin ScharrerThis can be done using \afterpage similar to my more complex solution shown in How to include a picture over two pages, left part on left side, right on right (for books)?. I also like \afterpage, it's very useful!

@MartinScharrer +1, very nice

@cmhughes I already had code like this, just much more complicated, for this answer:

A: How to include a picture over two pages, left part on left side, right on right (for books)?

Martin ScharrerThe following should do it. It needs at least two compiler runs to be stable. With a lot of floats it can take several compilation runs until the document is stable. Updates: Works now for twoside mode; now with caption support; Added float settings and removed ! from the float position to also...

@MartinScharrer I remember that one- I was going to link to it in the comments, but your answer beat me to it :)

2:50 PM
@cmhughes It got already linked by @lockstep. 14sec before I wanted to! ;-)

@MartinScharrer he's too speedy for me :
;)

3:25 PM
@MartinScharrer no one was supposed to use that it was a joke :-(
@lockstep since they are \let equal to each other there clearly isn't much difference, but there is the issue of the different naming schemes for document level and package level commands, and making \usepackage an error helped ease people from the 2.09 to 2e syntax. Also (hard to remember now) ther may have been a point when usepackage and Require Package were not identical. The package loading scheme was one of the main inovations of 2e and we went through a lot of prototypes:-)

@DavidCarlisle Adding that as an answer will earn you at least 10 rep, I promise. ;-)

3:41 PM
@lockstep done:-)

@DavidCarlisle Upvoted. ;-)

hmm still 185 behind @egreg today. I blame mum:-)

3:54 PM
@DavidCarlisle As you said, mums have the precedence even over TeX.SX. :)

@DavidCarlisle Really? That's funny!

why is this funny?

@FrankMittelbach Sorry, wrong reply. It was for David's post, not yours. I fixed that now.

ok ... was a bit perplexed ;-)

@FrankMittelbach I can understand that ;-)

6:05 PM
@percusse I didn't do closed paths. For that, you need to modify the method of solving the linear system to get the angles. For an open path, it's a "tridiagonal" matrix and there's a very simple algorithm for solving such (thanks Wikipedia!). For a closed path, this needs modifying slightly. Doable, but not on the first pass.

1 hour later…
7:21 PM
@AndrewStacey Indeed I was also thinking about the Thomas algorithm. Actually I might have implemented for some time ago. But I was thinking more about the closing of the curve. So it's more of a path closing question. Suppose the line width is nonnegligible and you want to obtain a nice line join. Even without any mock curvature, just plain TikZ, I don't know how to close the path without explicitly approaching the last point arbitrarily close...

I suggest to close this question as "too localized" (see the OP's "answer"):

Q: OTF Font via fontspec in moderncv and Koma-Script's scrlttr2, using xelatex

ichbinderI try to create a letter of application, using the class scrlttr2 from Koma-Script. It should look similar to a CV, created with moderncv's casual theme. One of the last steps is now to adjust the fonts in both documents. I would like to use Adobe Garamond Pro, which I have placed in ~/.fonts/. I...

@percusse \pgfpathclose

@AndrewStacey But that forces a line to the end point i.e. -- (coord-n)

Oh, yet again, I am stuck!

@KannappanSampath With what?

7:29 PM
I wanted to have things like: \newcommand{\sA}{\mathsf{A}} in my .sty file.
So, I put that in and the main file says, Undefined sequence.
@AlanMunn Is that not the right way of doing it?

@KannappanSampath Are you sure that the \sA command is causing the problem? Did you remember to re-save the changes you made to your .sty file?

@KannappanSampath undefined "sequence"?

@DavidCarlisle Oh, Ok. "undefined sontrol sequence"...

@percusse No. The -- cycle adds a line to the start point and then closes the path, but \pgfpathclose acts on a lower level and simply closes the path. Exactly what happens depends a little on the renderer. For example, circles are closed paths but there's no short line at the end of them.

@AndrewStacey Really? I didn't know that. Back to the @ forest in the source code then :)

7:33 PM
@KannappanSampath well if it says \sA isn't defined the line you posted didn't get executed (or was executed in a group)

@percusse Yes, it's a bit of a chase through @land. It's perhaps easier to see with the SVG renderer. The close path token simply emits a Z into the path: \def\pgfsys@closepath{\pgf@sys@addtosvgpath{Z}}

@AndrewStacey But then you can use your code to fake a cycle with an open path resulting with \pgfcolsepath no? Are the resulting angles too different than the cycled ones?

Hmm, I removed that whole $\sA$ from the main file and it now pounces on a line which is commented out!

@percusse Ah, but then the SVG specification says "Close the current subpath by drawing a straight line from the current point to current subpath's initial point." so you're right, though that means that every path ends like that. Presumably if the line segment is of zero length then renderers behave in a special way to make it "look right".

In an attempt to chop down the file, I started deleting the parts of the file, which still keeps the bug in question. Apparently, the parser seems to be fond of 102nd line and says something is faulty with it! @AlanMunn

7:41 PM
@percusse No, the angles would be wrong. Each "node" (or "knot" in Hobby's notation) affects all of the others (though in decreasing amounts) so closing the path introduces a new node which changes all the other angles a bit.

@KannappanSampath Try running pdflatex from the command line with the option -file-line-error, which should show you precisely the file where TeX is reading input from.

! LaTeX Error: Missing \begin{document}.See the LaTeX manual or LaTeX Companion for explanation.Type H <return> for immediate help.... The error message is this.

@KannappanSampath there is an s there so it tries to start typesetting before begin document
@KannappanSampath first character on the line

@DavidCarlisle I don't follow you, may you please tell me, what s are we referring to?

`
s\theo`
line 102 starts with a rogue s

7:45 PM
@AndrewStacey I wonder how Metapost manages to avoid that (probably solves the whole matrix equation from scratch)

@DavidCarlisle oh! OK!
Thank you!

OK. All bugs fixed.
The \sA thingy works too.

@DavidCarlisle I wonder it @KannappanSampath is a vim user. :)

@AlanMunn No. I don't even know how to use it. :(
@egreg I don't know how to do that. :(

7:49 PM
@percusse There's a variant of the Thomas algorithm for that: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tridiagonal_matrix_algorithm#Variants

Don't blame Vim. :) After all, what have the Romans ever done for us? :P

Now, a problem again!

@KannappanSampath It was really a bad joke (or even a really bad joke): I thought that the spurious 's' had come from the typical new user's attempts to save a file in vim (the actual command being :w).

The figure that is added is typeset even before the title.
@AlanMunn It happened that way, but I did not hold ctrl key in this accident.
So, it was a fact of the matter, indeed. :)

@KannappanSampath This will probably be fixed if you add more text. If not, see tex.stackexchange.com/q/2275/2693 (this is a super common question).

7:55 PM
Oh, I see. I'll read through.
@egreg I have corrected to have $..$ instead of \ensuremath{}. Here.

@Jake @PeterGrill @MarcoDaniel What, no TikZ solution to the "text under a line" question. I'm so disappointed. :)

@AlanMunn Gods have turned their backs to us :)

@Alan Is it common that the figure jumps to a place it is not supposed to or is it happening because of some error in the way my .sty file is organised?

8:11 PM
@KannappanSampath Good boy. :)

@AlanMunn Hehe! I have to admit, I feel really nervous answering non-TikZ questions. I'm always bracing myself for the real experts pointing out that I should have used \noexpand\futurelet\expandafter\first@of@tw@ instead, because that makes the line robust to tokens (or something along those lines).

@Jake When I posted that there are many possible solutions, and then saw all of you had posted I thought for sure there was at least one. What's funny is @PeterGrill had answered what is now the duplicate of this question as well.

Wait until I get acquainted with MetaPost, then I'll give all TikZ'ers a run for their money. :)
4

8:37 PM
@KannappanSampath If you specify all of the places for the figure [htbp] then it shouldn't go to the top of the first page. If you want to be sure, you could put \global\@topnum\z@ at the beginning of your \header macro. (BTW, you shouldn't use the two letter font changing commands: see tex.stackexchange.com/q/15361/2693.)
Also, since your package depends on the amsmath packages, you should probably load them using \RequirePackage in your style file, then you won't have to remember to load them (and you don't have to worry about loading order.)

@Jake no they wouldn;t say that as \futurelet isn't expandable:-)

@DavidCarlisle Hehe, thanks for proving my point =)

@Jake And everybody knows it's \@firstoftwo. :)

@AlanMunn Oh, I see. I'll do this one. But, may I ask you if your previous remark is referring to using \Large \sc?

@egreg @DavidCarlisle Why don't you guys go and do some TikZ and leave Jake alone. :)

8:41 PM
@AlanMunn tIKz wat's that?

@KannappanSampath I'm referring to \bf, \sc, \it etc. They are all deprecated commands.

So, I'd use \textbf, \textsc , ` \textit`?

@KannappanSampath \bfseries

@DavidCarlisle Well apparently it's no drawing program. :)

Heh, you guys are funny!
I have seen the best humour in this chatroom and in the Math room.
@DavidCarlisle Oh, OK. And, \scseries and so on?

8:46 PM
scshape itshape *the last part indicates which of the NFSS axes it is changing: size shape family series

@KannappanSampath There are two types of font changing commands: switches (which do not take an argument, and just turn "on" the feature) and macros, which take an argument and change the font properties of the argument. So the switches are \bfseries, \itshape, \scshape, \sffamily, etc. and the macros are \textbf{}, \texit{}, \textsf{} etc.

@DavidCarlisle It's a song from Ke$ha, apparently. :)
Poor girl, I wonder how many trouble she gets when writing her name in her LaTeX articles.

@PauloCereda Well she seems pretty unbalanced to begin with.

@AlanMunn LOL!!

@AlanMunn OK. But now, it seems to me that I should just want to modify the font properties of an argument, no?

8:49 PM
@PauloCereda well apparently she's a fan of latex keshafans.com/news/kesha/latex-the-lastest-diva-obsession.html

@KannappanSampath It depends a lot on what you are doing. If you turn on a switch within a group (roughly a set of braces or an environment) the switch is local to that group. So for example \textbf{foo} is pretty much the same as {\bfseries foo}.

I see. I don't know where I'd start learning this kind of details. I have been using internet as the only source and of course, you good guys, who I turn to for help evey now and then.
OK. But then I should use: \newtheoremstyle{myplain} {10pt}{10pt}{\itshape}{}{\scshape}{.}{.5em}{} instead of \newtheoremstyle{myplain} {10pt}{10pt}{\it}{}{\sc}{.}{.5em}{}--Right?

@KannappanSampath Yes, definitely.

OK. Good then.

@DavidCarlisle haha! :D

8:59 PM
@KannappanSampath Well the LaTeX Companion (now in its 3rd edition) is probably what many of us learned from (apart from those of us here who actually wrote the thing). (And I do mean here in this chat room. :)

@AlanMunn 3rd (did I miss one)

Hmmmm. I see. I'll buy myself a copy.

@KannappanSampath but feel free to start with the free books "a not so short introduction to latex" used to be good (been a while since I looked at it though)

@DavidCarlisle I've got two copies of the 2nd edition; does this make for the third? :)
@KannappanSampath There's a very good one, but it's in Italian (not by me). :)

@egreg Hmm, given that I only wanted to learn German in the near future, I don't think I'll be able to understand it though. :(

9:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle I could have sworn it was the 3rd. Maybe it's wishful thinking. It is unfortunately getting a little dated in some places.

@KannappanSampath you can get the latex companion German edition, and learn German and latex at the same time, very cost effective!

@KannappanSampath At least it's very nice: lorenzopantieri.net/LaTeX_files/ArteLaTeX.pdf

@DavidCarlisle Yeah, and if you think TeX syntax is bad...

@AlanMunn You mean it needs a chapter on tices or whatever it's called?

I'd like to pick up technical German mostly for the pleasure of reading math papers.

9:09 PM
Ich heiße Paulo und Ich trink Wasser. :)

"pleasure of reading math papers" :)

@DavidCarlisle There's a bunch of developments that didn't make it in, particularly XeLaTeX, IIRC, but yes, TikZ too, siunitx, beamer, biblatex. But nonetheless it's still a fantastically useful book, even now.

@PatrickGundlach Is there anything strange in that sentence? ;-)

@egreg I once tried to read a math paper. In my last live, I guess.

@KannappanSampath Unfortunately is German something that you not easily up pick.
@egreg Yes, Paulo's missing an 'e' on 'trink'...

9:13 PM
Heya =)

@AlanMunn actually when we say that verb (trinke - drink) we omit the e at the end sometimes.

@AlanMunn Oops, I tried a 1:1 mapping with "drink". My bad. :)

@AlanMunn Hmm. True I agree.

Math papers should be printed in A0 paper such that you don't need to shuffle the pages while creating small tornados on your desk.

@percusse I never read papers sitting upright. I always do it lying flat on the ground!

9:15 PM
I loose a little everytime I see ....from formulas (2) and (73).....

@PatrickGundlach Even in spelling? Quel horreur. :)

@AlanMunn No, only in pronounciation

@percusse Hey, mind giving me a few pointers on a drawing? =)

J G
Hi! Anybody around that's good at statistics?

@AlanMunn ... but it is common to omit the e - so I wouldn't be surprised if this is a common error among younger people

9:17 PM
@percusse Agreed! But, then a real time advice I have received is to write down only the equations on a piece of paper. And, I prefer naming things like (HOM1) , (R1) and so on.

@N3buchadnezzar Sure! How about int *pointer1; :P

@percusse :p Lemme check something first, I need to draw the intersection between $x + y + z = 2$ and $x^2 + y^2 + z^2 = 1$

@KannappanSampath I gave up long ago, I don't enough RAM to keep things at the same place.

@JG You may want to try out the Math Chat room. If it is TeXnical, I think people here will help you.

But I think, I have written the problem off wrong. Since they do not intersect. My guess is that the 2 should be a 1.

J G
9:20 PM
@KannappanSampath Thank you for your reply. It is not TeXnical :(

@KannappanSampath @JG actually there's a dedicated stats stackexchange site. stats.stackexchange.com

@KannappanSampath That's more common in algebra, where referencing to equations is rarer; in analysis they tend to number equations, because they often refer to them.

J G
@KannappanSampath I thought it was worth a shot to see if any of the TeX folks are good at stats :)

@N3buchadnezzar OK. So how can I be of use?

@percusse And, I have a good enough memory--so I hold all those conclusions I feel that would come up again stored in my brain, so, (8) would tell me k+l | l-2

9:21 PM
@percusse How can I make a 2d circle look more 3d? Give me 2sec and I will post an image

2 Mississippi....1 Mississippi

@egreg I see. I have never had to read a paper in Hardcore analysis (not that I have read enough papers in Algebra) and it shows.
@AlanMunn I did know that; but if the question is petty, may be it is not worth a post on the main site. But, I never know, these days, math.SE questions are often duplicates.

Later folks. As aways, it has been pleasure talking to you guys.

@N3buchadnezzar If you make the circle look like a sphere then the line becomes a plane which are both still possible to handle via a few tools such as tikz-3dplot or pgfplotsbut handling the intersection curve is (I think) not possible with TikZ but PSTricks might do that.

@percusse I am just looking for something simple, like adding an ellipse at the bottom or something =)
But thanks for the suggestion.

@KannappanSampath In my experience, most stats questions are not about the math.

@N3buchadnezzar You can go a little further like this one :)

@percusse Here is the file, I am still a NOOB with this stuff.

@N3buchadnezzar Unfortuantely I don't know enough tkz-euclide to modify that. Altermundus would quickly help you if you can ask a new question.

Plain tikz is fine too, I know some people would give me a spanking for that but...
\draw[ellipsis] (-0.5,0) -- (0.5,0) ?

\usetikzlibrary{shapes.geometric}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\begin{scope}[rotate=45]
\draw (0,0) ellipse (1.5 and 0.5);
\end{scope}
\end{tikzpicture}
This is the easiest to move around an ellipse

for me that is. (you don't need the library possibly)

_cheers, will see if that works=)

@percusse Yeah, you don't need the library here. The library makes the ellipse node shape available, but here you only use the ellipse path command, which is always available.

\draw[dashed] (0,0) ellipse (1 and 0.33); Did the trick, thanks guys =)

Thanks!
Andrew really amazed me with his solution so I decided to pick it up from where I left again using only `\pgfmath` stuff. You guys owe me a Sunday :P

@AndrewStacey: Don't forget our interview. :)

\mathoperator{\arcsinh} ?

@N3buchadnezzar \newcommand{\arcsinh}{\mathop{\mathrm{arcsinh}}}

@N3buchadnezzar \usepackage{amsmath} and then \DeclareMathOperator{\arcsinh}{arcsinh}

Yeah, I used the second option =)
I find it wierd that neither amsmath, amssymb or mathtools loads this by default.

@N3buchadnezzar They are not so frequently used.

10:09 PM
Even though, math packages should contain almost all symbols.

@N3buchadnezzar Probably the number of "textual operators" used in math is around the thousands.
It's easier to provide a facility for defining one's own.
The ISO names are "arsinh" and "arcosh", IIRC.

Friends, a newbie question: Is there a way to include a footnote in the first page of the article without having to associate it to any word?

@PauloCereda Only one?
\newcommand{\nofootnote}[1]{%
  \begingroup\renewcommand\thefootnote{}%
  \footnotetext{#1}\endgroup}

@egreg Yes, only one. :) Thanks a million. :)

But usually \thanks attached to the title or an author is preferred

10:23 PM
@egreg I see. :) Maybe I'll try \thanks.
@egreg: I asked Karl Berry if I could volunteer myself to translate "The TeX Live Guide" to Brazilian Portuguese and he said to me that I should definitely do it. I saw the other translations and the Italian one seems the most appealing to me with the "Note all’edizione italiana". I don't think I deserve a nice note like that, but a humble footnote in the first page. :)

@PauloCereda So you'll see the 2012 guide before us? :)

@egreg Oh my, I forgot to add "spoiler alert". :)

@PauloCereda Yes, I've seen it. :) There are not many changes, actually.

@egreg Indeed. Karl mentioned the "updates" will be the screenshots, basically. :P

10:40 PM
@PauloCereda It won't be an easy job. Best wishes!

@egreg Thanks! I'll try my best. :)
@egreg: speaking of translations, any plans on publishing your install guide on your page? :)

@PauloCereda Yes, I should do it.

@egreg :)

@PauloCereda The only thing that was different for me in the installation of TL 2009, TL 2010 and TL 2011 was the way to handle ConTeXt during installation: from typing two commands to typing one to typing none. Maybe in TL 2012 I will type only minus one. :-)

@ClarkKent It seems they put ConTeXt into context. :)
@ClarkKent In TL2012 you install ConTeXt which includes TL. :P

@KannappanSampath Hey have you calmed down and decided not to quit MSE? Please don't delete your account!

11:32 PM
Does someone have have an idea of what is the command \a , \b and so on are defined for ?

11:53 PM
@AlanMunn Sorry, was in a hurry, and had to go and for once, a tikz solution didn't even occur to me..
@AlanMunn I think only a part of it is a duplicate. The other question did not cover having any leading text, although that is not that much of an addition.

@Paulo Can you help me understand the answer here please?

@KannappanSampath Which one? :)

@PauloCereda This one.
The first answer there.

@KannappanSampath Hold on, let me check it. :)
