Q: What are the most famous individual toys in modern history?

EraContinuing my interest in the history of toys: Have there been any famous individual toys besides Winnie the Pooh and Paddington Bear? (Both were inspired by actual stuffed animals.) By individual I mean real and singular toys that somehow entered popular awareness, whether as the basis of a wor...

Q: What obligations did a freed slave have to his/her former master in Anglo-Saxon England?

Lars BosteenAs in Ancient Rome, slaves in Anglo-Saxon England could gain their freedom: The manumission (freeing) of slaves was solemnized by ceremony, the presence of witnesses, and legal documentation... The freeing ceremony could be performed in church, or at a cross-roads – symbolic that the...

Q: How did western saloons lock up for the night?

user3163495Old western saloon doors have spaces under them, which means people can still crawl under them and get in even if the doors are locked. How did the saloon owners lock up at night to keep people from breaking in?

Q: Did Sultan Mehmet IV defeat a Persian champion in single combat?

Biro CashFrom Jason Goodwin's popular history of the Ottoman Empire, Lords of the Horizons: At the siege of Baghdad in 1683, when the Persians demanded the contest be decided by single combat, they put up a Herculean warrior from their ranks, and Sultan Mehmet IV took him on himself, splitting t...

Hi everyone. I'm completely new here, as I'm usually found on SFF.SE. I just asked a question about Did anybody ever try to talk sense into Voldemort? and I realized I kind of have the same question about Hitler now (applies for several other dictators, though). The question would probably not even need that much rephrasing, ahah :) but as I said I don't really now how things work here, so would that be on-topic?
I'd rather not pollute the local meta with this kind of question, hence my asking here instead.
I did a quick looking around in the existing questions, but did not find a duplicate.
Also, I'd be looking for people actually trying to get him to change his mind, not "just" peace talks to stop a war.
Thanks in advance!
@Mithrandir I'm taking the liberty to ping you here since I saw you were in this room and site, too, and we both know each other a bit from SFF.SE (and this room doesn't seem to have much activity :) )

As a new user you probably wouldn't know, but due to past (Nazi) trolling, we have a very high bar for questions on Hitler. Any such question would probably have to be super carefully worded, and not subjective at all.
I don't usually participate in close voting (due to my diamond) except in egregious cases, but I highly suspect our users would have trouble with "Anyone" (most interactions between human beings aren't recorded for posterity), and with the super ill-defined "talk sense".

@T.E.D. dumb people are everywhere, I guess. Thanks for taking the time to reply - do you think that could be workarounded by asking the question for a wider selection of dictators? I'm not sure about this site's policy on "too broad" questions, but it's starting to sound like it.

If there's some specific plan or belief of his, and you want to know if anyone is documented as having tried to change his mind about that one thing, that might work.

Q: Kursk casualty ratio discrepancy

rs.29According to conventional wisdom, Soviet to German loss ratio at Kursk and immediately after in Soviet offensives was around 3:1 in men, and 5:1 (or more) in armored vehicles (tanks and self-propelled guns). Everybody recognizes Kursk as one of turning points of war, after that Germans were const...

I'm a guy who likes to answer a lot of questions that get closed as "too broad" here, so perhaps I'm not the best to ask about that. But we seem to much prefer questions about specific people or places to "Did X ever happen in History?"

Yeah, I can see how the wording would be subject to debate on such a site. Alright, I'll try to think of a better formulation and see if I post that some time. I can live without it, just a random thought I had while posting the question about Voldemort :) thanks for the info!

If you could pick a specific belief or policy, it might work. For instance, I know Churchill in his memoir of the war reported (prior to becoming PM) a desire to speak with Hitler about his anti-Semitism if they were to meet, and that seemed to have nixed the prospective meeting.
But if you don't have anything specific in mind, what comes to my mind for what you are looking for is The Tick's press conference where he tells the bad guys to "Cut out all that Evil!"
@Jenayah NP. I hope you find something workable!

@T.E.D. duly noted. That definitely rings a bell now that you mention it. History classes were some time ago, I'll have to go back into some of these! (also, I'll have not to get confused with another "The Tick"..‌. :) )
