8:00 AM
morning

Sigh
trainign starts
webex on linux is still terrible
fortunately I have a laptop from work for this reason
>_<

8:23 AM

broken wireless internet

lol

is elon musk on glue?

8:45 AM
lol
So my friend on PSN told me he called one of the divers a Pedo
I've not fact checked it, but wtf?

@djsmiley2k A friend of mine said the same thing

Alright, this is really bugging me. Has anyone else experience the three-way Alt-Tab behaviour with Windows 10?

@djsmiley2k Yeah. He did.

@rahuldottech source plz?
all seems a bit weird.

8:49 AM

Sigh
Not cool Elon, not cool.
Training is still on introduction >_<

Bob
9:07 AM
wut

wut.
On at home training course all week

Bob
what's he smoking...

Oh Elon. Yeah, wut.
As someone noted, this is how you make a supervillian

Here's the story:

Elon struck gold with PayPal.
Has too much money. Doesn't know what to do with it.
Dreams about mars.
Starts SpaceX.
Pissed about fuel prices.
Starts Tesla.
Angry at traffic.
Starts the Boring Company.
Wants a weapon.
Makes a fucking flamethrower.

Why? Because he can. And because it gets him publicity.

But he doesn't do any hard work. He doesn't stay up nights planning or working or anything. He pays people to do that stuff.

He's smart. He's not a genius. And people should stop treating him like a god.

you are always going to get fan boys

9:15 AM
Indeed
Look at Trump.
Look at the kardashians
If you're going to spend your life telling people to stop worshipping stuff, you need to realise you've got 15,000 years of human evolution to break.

we might all dead from radiation by this evening if his helsinki meeting goes badly

@Burgi we might all already be dying.

@rahuldottech actually... It's all about mars

@JourneymanGeek Not sure about the flame throwers?
But the rest, yup.
1. Wants to go to mars, builds rockets
2. Realises first we need Ai powered drones on mars and the rest of the solar system to explore for us - builds cars
3. Realised we aren't going to live on the surface of any planets other than earth - builds digging machines.
Next up - he'll solve the water crisis
(he's already started ;!)

@rahuldottech He did sleep on the Tesla factory floor when it was undergoing production difficulties, so he claimed
@djsmiley2k The FLint, MI thing he's doing?

9:19 AM
@bertieb publicity

Solar cells and batteries, he needs for methane production

@bertieb yeah partially that, but I'm sure he's say stuff about water production before

@bertieb the same heroism thing

You know what you can do with huge voltages? You can make O3.
He's gonna fix the ozone layer too \o/

9:20 AM
Needs water for humans and fuel

@rahuldottech lots and lots and lots of people have plenty of money
and never do anything useful with it.

Well, they don't want the publicity...

On the other hand he needs to work out not everything is a software engineering problem :p

</snark> :P

@JourneymanGeek Hmmm I'm not sure
same way money can solve any problem, if you've got enough of it.

9:22 AM
<!--> is a valid html comment.

It may not be the best solution.

I love it

@djsmiley2k There was the businessman who threw money at getting folks in his community to finish high school (or such); great success was had
It does the rounds on social media

yah
Iirc, black males?
high rates of gun crime and drugs... etc

Ah wait, I think they paid a living wage or something, and it increased HS completion %

9:24 AM
still
money isn't everything, but it definitely helps ;D

Yup
Bleh, can't find the reference

L or R?
/me goes l

9:42 AM
I asked a spammer where they got my email address from. Response:
> I got your email id from google database.....Our executives collect data from google.

have you googled your own email address

The folks that spam-phone me from London-based numbers about 'investing' to get an 'additional stream of income' say they got my number from 'clicking on a banner advert' when I ask

lol wut
IP address? sure, phone number? I think not.

Well yes
Sometimes if I'm bored I try to find out how they actually got my number
But it seem they would prefer to talk about these exciting investment opportunities

yah

9:49 AM
Who'da thunk? :P

You could be rich!
never have to work again

Other times I try to find out where they are registered
@djsmiley2k madly buys lottery tickets
"London"
"Okay, what address?"

Definitely never have to take up a job phoning people to make them rich!.

"An address in London"
"What is the address in London?"
"That's where we are based."

Just ask for the company name

9:52 AM
exuent Hamlet stage left, muttering

go on company house index
then read out the company adress, ask them if they know how much their execs get paid

I've done that as well

tell them how much their execs get paid...
laugh
ask them why they aren't rich yet.

I highly suspect it's a scam, but I'm not willing to go any further to prove it...
Yea

ofc it's a scam
You win if they start crying
and no, i don't think this is inhumane
they choose to do that job
yey

10:10 AM
@rahuldottech "But he doesn't do any hard work. He doesn't stay up nights planning or working or anything." I feel like that's being rather unfair.
No, scratch that. That's being very unfair.
Being the polar opposite of a "fanboy" is equally bad.
You miss the nuances of ... humanity ... when you put someone on a pedestal. But the same thing happens when you try your best to bury everything they've done.
I certainly don't agree with everything he's said or done, especially of today's news. But at the same time that's no reason to accuse him of resting on his laurels and effectively lounging around doing nothing.
@rahuldottech Devil's advocate for "To be called a hero. And when that failed, he went mad. As you can clearly see." — or he got pissed off at everyone claiming he only did it for publicity. As a human? I'd be fucking pissed off if I put money and effort in a genuine attempt to help and that was the reception. What he said was wrong, but it's also an entirely genuine human reaction.

@Bob Fair enough. but when you're leading all these top companies, you've gotta learn how to deal with criticism

Bob
(Human reactions not necessarily being good, or bad. But implying that he could only have reacted that way because a machiavellian publicity stunt went wrong? No.)

First time that happened, he said he'd start a public-rating system for media. The second time, he called someone who actually did really good work a pedo. I get where you're coming from. But if he goes on like this, it's only going to make stuff worse for him
Also, one of my braces' rubber bands snapped and is now stuck ARGH

Bob
@rahuldottech I'm not saying his reaction is the right thing to do, from either a moral or PR standpoint. I'm saying you should not assume his reaction is necessarily because some scheme went wrong. It's also a possible real reaction to a genuine attempt.
In other words, the reaction is not proof of any one possible cause.

@Bob No, I know that.

10:21 AM
ffs
we are getting search limited on google

lol
@Burgi someone's machine is supplying @bertieb's phone number to scammers via a machine at your workplace? :D

maybe
chucked it over to our IT company

> Early July: Collect and respond to feedback from this post
LMAOOOO Joe Friend totally bamboozled us

@Burgi in a another life, weh ad that happen
was some malware D:
@rahuldottech ??

@djsmiley2k haha he didn't respond to a single thing hahahahahahahahahaha

10:36 AM
the nuclear option is to swap everyone over to a new IP from the block we have from the ISP
> Note: I'm leaving on vacation later today, but didn't want to delay getting these designs posted. As such, I'll have limited time/ability to respond to feedback and comments until I return.

@Burgi limited =/= no

he cannot respond as he isn't there to respond

Bob
@rahuldottech did you manage to get the download working or should I upload it elsewhere?

@Bob It's still running

i sspect he will be back from holiday next monday

Bob
10:38 AM
@rahuldottech which program?

@Bob httrack

News just in, SE doesn't give a crap what anyone thinks </notnews>

Bob
@rahuldottech does it do resumes?

@Bob Yeah

Bob
ah cool
@JourneymanGeek ?

10:42 AM
I have no idea

I think that was a quote.

I think I accidentally set off a macro

you accidentally the internet?

Bob
@rahuldottech it's currently on a French server. the other options I have are au and usa. not sure which ones are fast from Indian internet... they're probably all shit

I know these photos are deliberately chosen but...

10:44 AM
@Bob Let me chuck an upload script on to my homeserver upload file straight to it?

Bob
@rahuldottech if it's the same connection (both ends are the same) that probably won't help
I was more thinking if you had a jumpserver

@Bob I'll have to download it anyway, no matter where you upload it. Argh

Hey Folks, is it possible to query logs of the Postgres DB from within that DB? I'm using a hosted version of Google Cloud SQL and I would like to see/export the queries that are executed in that DB?

11:16 AM
no idea, you might want to raise a question on Database Administrators
i wish the EU would bring google to task on its awful customer services
i wonder if putin is giving trump his new orders

11:41 AM
Time to combine this 80 pdfs >_<
@AlexZamai I'd expect so

xD
Yawn
this first day of this course is largely this guy just talking at us >_<

1:34 PM
Quick question that probably doesn't need a full post: my planned office setup has 3 monitors connected to a laptop dock. There's also going to be a desktop pc in there, would I be able to use a usb switch to swap the dock (and therefore the monitors and peripherals) between the laptop and pc?

Probably not

Or would I see serious performance issues? Never had to use a dock like this before but seems like I'm sending a lot of data through a single connection

USB c or thunderbolt have a lot of bandwidth. I don't think you can just switch tho

Shame, would have saved me a lot of extra cables and manually switching the monitor inputs back and forth

@Psycrow are you talking about some sort of KVM?

1:45 PM
you can daisy chain DisplayPort 1.2 (up to a certain maxium combined pixels per second) with up to 3 monitors
they sell docks like that if all your monitors are DisplayPort 1.2 with MST support as well as your desktop and laptop
they're not cheap though
definitely works with 3x 1080p60 as I have that myself. won't work with all 4k60 probably
pretty sure DP 1.2 with MST is the only way to do it without having a giant mass of cables
MonitorA -> MonitorB, MonitorB -> MonitorC, MonitorC -> hub, hub -> laptop, hub -> desktop
that's 5 cables
:45669492 you would if the monitor only has one output
(to the computer)

Bob
I misread :P

Can't find any MST supported monitors in my price range unfortunately, DP but no MST

I should have used the Gstreamer pipeline syntax
monitorDisplayPortSrc name=monitor1 ! mstpay ! monitorDisplayPortSrc name=monitor2 ! mstpay ! monitorDisplayPortSrc name=monitor3 . monitor3 ! displayPortMux ! displayPortSink name=laptop. monitor3 ! displayPortMux ! displayPortSink name=desktop

2:09 PM
Out of curiosity, what wouldn't work about having the dock cable plugged into a switch? It makes sense in my head but I don't have a lot of experience with hardware connectivity

@Psycrow if you don't use MST, you'll need a KVM switch that supports 3 monitors, which are also ridiculously expensive
monitor1 -> switch
monitor2 -> switch
monitor3 -> switch
switch -> laptop
switch -> desktop
that arrangement generally runs about $200-$300 for the switch even for old VGA or DVI
and it's even worse because you can't carry all the data for all 3 monitors over one cable without using MST, so you'd have to have 3 cables going to each computer
the cabling alone would cost over $100 USD

So this is the dock I was going to use: Dell 452-BBOO USB 3.0 Ultra HD Triple Video Docking Station amazon.co.uk/dp/B00O0M46KO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_xFktBb15WJ42N
That should let me connect either my pc or laptop to the three monitors, yeah?
Anyway, it's no matter, I'll just double up on cables as my monitors can do DP and HDMI, thanks for the help 👍

@Psycrow sure, but it won't let you connect both and switch out with a button/knob
you'd have to disconnect and connect each time

So I couldn't plug the dock into a switch and the switch into the pc and the laptop?
Ah well, I'll just have to reconnect each time if necessary, just trying to cut down on messing around with cables

2:33 PM

meh

@allquixotic My suspicion there is poor contact between the CPU and heatsink. Pounding on it fixing the issue is consistent with that as well.

@Psycrow 2 of them, and something else to switch between them...

2:57 PM
ooh apparently it is prime day

@Burgi here too!
I ordered a Mi Band 2

3:16 PM
Nothing else is really very great.

The glue melted holding the corsair letters on my keyboard
I just cleaned it and the R's wiped off :O
oh and teh A
CO S I

@djsmiley2k what melted? The glue or the letters?

The glue

3:33 PM
cya

4:17 PM
I have a Antec 3 speed fan in the top of my case
however sometimes it comes to a complete stop :O
looks like it's having... issues :/
wtf kinda fan is 14cm a side?
oh duur 140mm
I need to check what connector it's on too

I have a question on checking fan sizes ;p

4:34 PM
:D
now somethings making horrible bearing soudns D:

5:20 PM

Is that a dedicated Windows Shop button?

@djsmiley2k You may want to replace that with an NF-A14. If you need more speed, industrial variants are available at 2000 and 3000 rpm, albeit at substantially higher noise levels.

@djsmiley2k oh lawdy, you've summoned the fan expert ;) it's almost like you just said "my $15 wired headphones from 1998 just broke" to me

bit late, already ordered some

What did you get?

5:30 PM
@bwDraco i want whisper quiet... lets see how much one of those is
4 pin header btw

$22 a pop.
Get the PWM version. That's what I have in my desktop.

£20, argh no
thats twice what i just paid
if this fan is terrible and makes me kill mysel,f then i'll concider blowing£20 on a fan
hmmm no one box?

Hmm... fluid dynamic (hydrodynamic) bearing, but otherwise looks rather generic. Should be a reasonably good performer, though.
The legacy Noctua 140mm design is available with a reduced accessory kit as the NF-P14s redux.

Yup.

5:36 PM
k, price is more like it
wtf
style pmw or pwm ;~D

Must be an error on Amazon's part.
Noctua's bearing is essentially a hydrodynamic bearing, but has a magnet to keep it centered and stabilized as the fan spins up to avoid the problem where the lack of oil pressure at startup can cause added friction and therefore reduced bearing life.

there's two suplliers
so i think that's why ;D
Ok, order swapped.
This best be good :P
I don't go through a lot o fans, but they don't last as long as I think they should :(
@allquixotic actually.... they did
:D
i've had that pair so long, the plastic on the earbud went brittle, cracked and it's fallen apart
which reminds me I need to look in the ox of electronics for another pair

FWIW, Noctua fans generally have a wide PWM adjustment range so you can turn them down to about 20%. (The NF-A14 PWM fans in my machine are auto-detected by the UEFI firmware to have a minimum of 19%.)
They actually put a substantial amount of work into making a custom PWM control chip that doesn't make ticking or buzzing noises at various speeds: noctua.at/en/ne_fd1_pwm_ic
Notice how fans tend to make a ticking noise from the motor at low speeds? The NE-FD1 eliminates this problem.
All of my Noctua fans have dead-silent motors with absolutely none of these sorts of ticking or clicking noises even as it spins up.

5:52 PM
It's massively discounted, should I get my first SSD?

@rahuldottech I do not recommend the SanDisk SSD PLUS.

@bwDraco Why not

(the 5V fans uses a variant of Noctua's driver chip called NE-FD3, and there is a 24V AEC-Q100 qualified version called NE-FD4 for use in automotive applications)
@rahuldottech It's among the worst name-brand SSDs out there.

For light workloads, it's probably fine, but it has worse endurance than most drives and will massively slow down under sustained load.
@rahuldottech I don't think that's much better.

5:55 PM
@bwDraco sigh

May 30 '17 at 1:44, by bwDraco
...and yes, the SanDisk SSD PLUS is crap. TweakTown's review is scathing.

Not familiar with that model, but that's also what we call DRAMless.
No on-board RAM, which hurts endurance and greatly limits random I/O performance.
What's your budget?

@bwDraco I don't need anything with exceptional performance
@bwDraco INR 2600, USD 40 max

I think the A400 is an okay basic SSD, though. It should be better than that SanDisk piece of crap.

5:59 PM
> The SSD experience that the UV400 offers is what you would expect from a value SSD. It is an order of magnitude better than any mechanical HDD, but not on the level of say a HyperX Savage. This is offset by lower cost which is the proposition of any value-oriented SSD on the market. We feel that Kingston's UV400 480GB SSD is a decent performer, and an overall great value, especially when purchased as an upgrade bundle. Kingston's UV400 480GB SATA III SSD is TweakTown recommended.

Read more: https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/7943/kingston-ssdnow-uv400-480gb-sata-iii-ssd-review/index11.html
@bwDraco
Think I'll go for it

The UV400 is not the same as the A400. The UV400 is a small step up.

It's gotta be better than my failing hybrid SSHD
@bwDraco Ah. Well, UV400 is within my budget
So I'll get one?

The UV400 is not a DRAMless drive and is generally considered a solid performer, even if not as fast as, say, the Samsung SSD 860 EVO.
The A400 is also variable BOM, meaning the parts may change over time.

@bwDraco So I'm going for the UV400
Thanks for all your help

Hmm. The UV400 is variable BOM, too.
What is a constant on that drive, though, is the four-channel Marvell 88SS1074 controller.
The UV400 is an older model with planar TLC NAND which has technically been replaced with the A400, but it's a better performer because the UV400 has a DRAM buffer. The A400 does not.
The UV400 remains available in limited quantities. It's only a matter of time before it's discontinued.
So, you've made a good choice.

6:12 PM
@bwDraco :)

6:32 PM
Woprks for me
tho i don't perticular drive it hard at all

6:43 PM
Designed for rugged use with reinforced rubber guards, easy grip handles and a spill resistant keyboard
hmmm
errr

> during the start-up phase and until the lubricant is pumped all the way up to the bearing's top, there might be increased friction, meaning that these fans aren't suitable for applications involving lots of starts and stops (in PSUs featuring a semi-passive mode).
I might talk about this in a bit more detail on Matrix chat.

7:28 PM
omfg, i googled "millennium falcon cargo capacity" and google oneboxes it!

Q: New Resources for Our Stack Exchange Network

Juan MIt's nice to be here! Hello, fellow humans! My name is Juan M and I’ve served as the Community Manager of Stack Overflow en español as well as the Manager for the International Stack Overflow communities. I realize that many of you have never heard of me or my roles at Stack Overflow and that’s ...

So this came up
Might be a good thing

@JourneymanGeek are you applying?

The feeling when you are doing your networking upgrades at work... And find NONE of the equipment was plugged into the battery backup:

-.-

@Burgi if there's an opening maybe?
No idea if they're reorganising the current team(s) of CMs

@JourneymanGeek So tempted to say 'Maybe take a look at the mess which is how SE plans stuff, and fix that?'

@djsmiley2k lol

7:52 PM
@djsmiley2k heh, I'm refraining from posting an answer till I get more sleep ;)

Clearly they don't know what a well thought out plan looks like.
If they did, they'd know that posting something asking for comments to be in by the time it's essentially posted, with the fact they won't even be here to see them...

@djsmiley2k if you can give some constructive critique with a few examples - sure

@JourneymanGeek I'm too meh really
but the themes thing is a huge one

@djsmiley2k and that's part of the problem they need to face
mehness

the changes to the rules etc, with a 'oh and we'll setup an email address and form for this at some poiunt in the future'.
- Themes being released, and said person isn't around to even look at comments, and comments are required to be in before the date the thing was even posted.
- Changes to the rules re: GDPR and such, with notes along the lines of "We'll setup a mailing address, or email box with a form at some point in the future, maybe".

7:55 PM
@djsmiley2k see...
I don't work at SE ;p

- The constant ignoring of chat

I know that one will never change
the only time it doesn't get ignored, is when people are being bad.
The fact it IS ignored, means people are essentially being good...

I do actually want to, if I can word it correctly ask for more direct CM engagement
but ugh, I do not want to post something angrily ranty like the themes post
It was necessary

On top of the legalease changes RE: GDPR, came the 'Be Nicer than you'd be to anyone you met on the street' stuff.

7:58 PM
hm

This is me being construcxtive ;D
Trying to think now

I actually suspect a good chunk of that was from the top, and kinda driven by that monumental amounts of drama

Oh god yeah

Its going to be a lot of work dealing with the pushback on SO from that
folks sound a lot like SF did a few years ago

8:20 PM
wow tyhat smells good.
RAIN \o/
