This looks more fun.

Just to point out though - it isn't that strict, and I think we can roughly set the lines ourselves ._.

@ThatBrazilianGuy By the way, 9,223,372 TB (8 EiB) is 2^63 bytes.

The book with a dragon on its cover and whatnot is probably a reference to The Dragon Book, formally titled Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools.

.... Its always better not to explain a joke ;)

user226528
And here I thought I am explaining an act of paying homage, but whatever.

thankfully you seem to be incorrect google.com/…

user226528
You probably meant "correct".

there's a lack of sharpened steel dragon toothpicks

user226528
4:37 AM
Eh. Minor inaccuracy. It is a honorable mention after all. But general description matches: Dragon, classic, thickness, difficulty to read...

5:53 AM
Could also totally be a reference to Eragon
ohh! The comic is also a hyperlink on xkcd.com

user226528
Well, it doesn't have a sword between its teeth, its thickness is not famous, it is not categorically technical or in need of high attention span... I have no comment on its classic status.

user226528
All in all, the dragon book seemed to fit the description more closely.

user226528
6:07 AM
The dragon book is actually famous for its difficulty. On the Internet it has become something of a meme: They say, such and such guy or gal is so smart, he or she understood 25% of the dragon book.

@Zanna I think so

you don't read any Arabic script then?

@Zanna Nah, I read Devanagari and Eastern Nagari scripts
(Bangla, Hindi, Sanskrit)

wow, impressive

user226528
lol

6:21 AM
@Zanna :)

those scripts look so beautiful to me

user226528
Well, all Indians can read them.

user226528
Of course, if you find it impressive, it can only be good.

user226528
And yes, they are beautiful.

user226528
Of course, if you are looking for a more impressive feat, Japanese can read four very difficult scripts, but not before reaching the age of 15.

6:26 AM
Hey, @AmithKK, mind if I ask you some questions about NMIT?

I don't mind xD

@AmithKK For admission I must give one of the Karnataka common entrance tests? They don't accept JEE?

@rahuldottech Yep
Either CET or ComedK

@AmithKK And I don't suppose I they have test centers outside Karnataka?
Okay, wait, they do, for ComedK at least!

Well you can't give CET if you're not a resident of karnataka
ComedK, they do have centers

6:32 AM
@AmithKK Interesting. Do you like NMIT?

idk what "all x" can do but I'm sure impressed by whatever I'd like to be able to do but cannot...

@rahuldottech It's pretty good

@Zanna What's that in response to?

20 mins ago, by Fleet Command
Well, all Indians can read them.

user226528
@Zanna Good. That means you are open to accepting other cultures. You can be cultural embassador.

user226528
6:43 AM
A successful one.

@Zanna That statement is false

user226528
Not everyone is open to the other cultures, let alone impressed by them.

There are many scripts and languages in India. Most people can read only one or two at most.

yeah

I gotta go, see ya all later

have a good day afternoon :)

I know there are lot of scripts (as well as languages, religions, ethnic groups) in India, but Hindi and Devanagari have been two of the most recurrent targets of software localization in India.

Q: Remove traces of Arabic language settings in LibreOffice (docx / odt files)

PhilippI use LibreOffice on Linux and sometimes have to proofread .docx files for a friend. These files are written in German, but they are created on a Windows computer where the default setting is Arabic. They are also formatted in an untolerable way (on the lines of all bold and 20 pt). The followin...

we are doing a sweepstake in the office for the international sports ball event
i've drawn out Egypt and Morocco

yey one of our customers sending virus email

10:14 AM
i'm not entirely sure but i don't think that they are renowned sports ball countries

sysadmin shouting about how they can't just block all word attachments etc
i'm like..... scanning word attachments is old, surely you can do that :/

do you not have attachment AV?

10:25 AM
well I don't know now xD
not my job XD

@Burgi Ball event? Like a fancy dress dance or something?

I think he means football ;p

@Burgi We're on the 'receiving' end anyway...
I'd personally block all emails with macro enabled word docs
but apparently that's not cool.

@djsmiley2k Lenny.jpg Must... Be... Mature
I wonder if I'll be able to reach the workplace today. There are rumors of a bus strike starting today.

@Burgi Egypt has the top scoring player in the Premier League... but that's about it.

10:32 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy stay safe.
(i.e. don't go to work).

First time for them in the World Cup though!
(for a while, at least)

10:43 AM
i know nothing about sports ball
@MichaelFrank i thought you were into egg chasing

@djsmiley2k I will stay safe. If the rumor confirms, staying will be all I'll be doing for a while.

11:02 AM

Frustrating puzzle of the day: How must one tell a very old man who has a very high opinion of himself and his social position that those random files sent to him via email attachment are digital junk without insulting him?

user226528
These files all have names that start with ~$, end with .tmp and consist of random letters and numbers.

@Burgi I am way more into football

you and macro sized carbon 60 atoms
wtf.... the old FE guy is messaging me through linkedin asking for his job back

@JourneymanGeek indeed

3:05 PM
got a weird one here... if i send a partial postcode to google for geocoding the results i get back are for the M9 motorway rather than the postal district in manchester. any ideas?

go to maps.google.com and google a partial postcode
zoom out, it'll show you the entire area that postcode covers

yes i know
its a valid postal area

Oh wait now i see
that's rather 'off'.
weird.
What's the postcodE?

m9
its a partial

Oh, I see D:
And google thinks you're querying the M9 motorway
XD

3:13 PM
yeah

That's a very.... uk centric bug

until i filtered by country i was returning locations in uzbekistan

ah wait... i'd made a typo
ok different response: ZERO_RESULTS

I get suggested postcodes of M90 when I search for M9.

3:20 PM
M9 is north manchester

Weird.
Google hates postcodes?

dont post codes

i'm probably forming my request URL incorrectly
https://maps.google.com/maps/api/geocode/json?address={$address}&components=cou‌ntry:GB|postal_code:{$address}&key={$apikey}
where $address = "m9"

errr why the | ?

it is the components delimiter

3:27 PM
Also you're sticking M9 in as the Address, and the Postcode?

yeah

I mean, I don't know anything
but that seems like returning the M9 motorway would be the right address
When a non-tech person warns you about someone using the line 'This guy is easily confused.'.... run.
Just run

the google documentation is terrible

right here. I blame summer and the rack server in my room.

@Ave Do you got hearing protection? I ask sincerely, as I know many techs who lost good chunks of hearing from the whirring noises

Ave
I don't.
I am noticing some harm to my hearing, but it's nothing significant.

Is it a rack for home or work? If for work, I'd get hearing protection ASAP! I know in certain places, worker's compensation doesn't cover hearing loss from servers

Ave
5:05 PM
it's somewhere in the middle but closer to home? I host some of my projects there and some of my friends' projects.
It's pretty much an attempt by me to reduce cloud fees as much as possible as electricity fees rise less than foreign currencies do
It's working out quite well, if I ignore the tinnitus and the fact that hearing higher frequencies is harder for me now.

I don't think I'd ever want to lose that ability
What country do you live in, if you don't mind my asking?

Ave
Turkey.
@CanadianLuke eh. I always had bad hearing, I was almost deaf for years after my birth. I sort of accepted the fact that I will probably go fully deaf at some point in my life.

That sucks :( I can't imagine how my life would be without hearing

5:58 PM
@Ave NO NO NO JUST PUT ON HEADPHONES

pujt something on plz
don't do that to yourself, you'll regret it in 60 years
and don't give me the 'i won't be around in 60 years bs either.
Also, trying to keeep catapillars now, this'll be interesting
Can someone mute 2.1

6:15 PM
How peaceful. It is hard to imagine just a couple of days ago, at this time, I was in admin hell.

What happened?

user226528
Some kid pulling a prank on the other; used Super GREP to change all instances of "cry" in the PC (files, paths, Registry, document contents) into "crap".

user226528
Or maybe Power GREP. TBH, I don't know what tool it could have been. Apps don't usually leave a trace.

user226528
Anyway, suddenly, the game of Devil May Crap didn't run.

@Burgi What's #11?

user226528
6:21 PM
Actually, now that I am looking back it is kind of funny.

@ThatBrazilianGuy the flat above and to the right of mine

Wow, lol

user226528
One quote/motto of the day was changed from "Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war" into... you know.

user226528
Also, the MP3 music about the mournful spirit of a woman whose wail warned of impending death was no longer "The Crying Lady".

@Bob It's been more than a year since we wrote answers to this question!?!?!?!?! WHAT!?

user226528
6:26 PM
Fortunately, MichaelFrank was here. God bless him. Took my mind of it by talking about how Devil May Cry is M-rated, not R-rated and how retail rating enforcement is a pain in the hat.

user226528
I just never came up with a good punishment for the kid who did this.

user226528
Hmm... Maybe having him/her clean up the mess is a good idea, but I don't want him/her to just run GREP again so that a legit document claim that indoor plumming was invented by Thomas Cryer.

@rahuldottech For context, this is my oldest answer

... And my oldest question

@Burgi Are they fighting with pillows while pop music plays in the background?
You might be in an extra in a music video.

its nudging 28C here

HA.
It's 26 and I'm wearing a coat
Yesterday it was 23 and I was wearing winter socks in bed

Those Britain barbarians are crazy!

Yea, 28C can be very hot for me too

@ThatBrazilianGuy come here and experience our weather
it's almost as bad as asia

28 C is 82 F, which is moderately warm but it gets a lot worse here
Was ninetysomething a while back and will probably hit hundreds throughout summer

Saturday it was 20 C and I was freezing and feeling a chill in my bones and started closing all the windows
And wearing warm clothes

20C is a lovely pleasant day

you live in a fracking jungle

7:24 PM
I've seen 13 once. Once. Couldn't stop rattling my teeth.
It was the day I met my wife and she said it was a significant factor of us getting close when we met.

@ThatBrazilianGuy It's 16C here and I'm wearing shorts and a t-shirt.
And I'm still feeling too hot.

@djsmiley2k Not having one in a city that can reach 40 ~ 43 is suicide.

Something is seriously wrong with you if it's 26 and you need to wear a coat.

@DavidPostill It was probably 23 or 24 earlier, it's autumn, there's no sun, I'm inside with a shitty near broken air con turned on.

Some of the main reasons for always feeling cold are listed below:

Hypothyroid: If your body finds it very difficult to cope with even a little bit of cold, hypothyroid—a little bow tie like gland lying in your neck—is to be blamed. Its main function is to change food into energy. This energy is then used by the body for performing various functions, and keeping the body warm is one of them. According to a recent study, in two out of hundred persons, it works slow or doesn’t work at all.

Diabetes: People suffering from Diabetes Type 2, often feel cold, along with the numbness of hands and

On the other hand, we see 30 C and laugh.
(And cry at 40C and at higher I once said I'd kiss whoever invented the AC)

8:01 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy LOL. I once worked in Kuwait and had to be outside during the day (for short periods). It was 50C+ :)

Sounds like an horror story to me.

@ThatBrazilianGuy I did get heatstroke on one occasion.
Fortunately the control room had AC ;)

I get quite dizzy, lethargic, slow, etc when it's really hot.

watup peeps
anyone following hardware news?
I'm wondering when a new generation of gpus will arrive so that the current cards can get cheaper, or maybe I'll get something of the newer stuff then

Lately I haven't been much of a hardware guy
Hardware is historically expensive these parts
And lately it's been much worse

@Hakase talk to @bwDraco - He's basically the hardware king

10:04 PM
@Hakase We probably shouldn't expect a new generation of new GPUs until Q3 or Q4 this year. NVIDIA says the next generation of GeForce GPUs is quite far away (no exacts), with a possible product announcement at Hot Chips 2018 (August 20-21). AMD's 7nm Vega is currently sampling for datacenters only and I don't expect consumer 7nm GPUs to be available until early 2019.

I spent half an hour at the bus stop, only 3 buses or so passed. =/
And for going to work the bus line was five times longer than the usual

@Hakase Not anytime soon, and that will not make current ones cheaper anyway.

Subway service is working as normal tho

@bwDraco I've been meaning to go through my browser bookmarks in october last year, and when I finally did it today, I look at the calendar and it's june
so I don't think waiting it gonna be a problem :p
guess I'll just get a 1050 then if nothing comes up by the time 970 ssds start selling
and probably TI coz of the extra 2 gigs of ram
or maybe not
if I'm playing at lowest to mid settings, does gpu ram really matter?

@Hakase I must be tired, I thought that was H. Jon Benjamin doing the VO at first

what stops OS devs from locking access by each app to only its own confined directory?
where are the granular permissions
same with phones

> I converted most of my DVD collection to video files around 2002 or so.

First you had to dump the DVD. Copying files didn't work, you had to run a tool to decrypt them. There were already some discs that the dumped DeCSS key didn't work on and you had to use a different tool to try to "find" the key or brute force it.

So you have all the files, but now you need to extract all the streams. Not only could you have multiple audio streams and video streams, subtitles (which were images, not text), and possibly chapter/title data. Some discs were one big blob of contents and used chapter and
Oh the memories trauma

I recently saw a guy haul a giant box of audio tapes for those suitcase-sized tape players
asked watup, he said music got all electronicy, didn't listen to those tapes in 40 years
