Q: With Apologies to Robert Frost

Rand al'ThorI heard this from an elderly German gentleman with a strong accent. At first I thought he was reciting a Robert Frost poem, but then the last line confused me. Some see de earth vill end times four, Some see de t'rice. From vot I've tasted of de four times, I and zose who know for whom ...

Q: FTC theme suggestion: Reusing Information

phenomistSometimes, I often particularly enjoy puzzles that reuse the same piece of information over and over. Essentially, it shares the elegance of a well constructed &lit, with whole text serving double-duty. Every word not only is used in entirety for the wordplay part, but the whole phrase could serv...

12:58 AM
@phenomist VTC too meta

1:13 AM
Ugh. I tried the right thing, but I missed the "T" in "sentence" (and then stopped)

the question is: does this count as a FTC entry when that becomes the topic?

I'm about to release an FTC metapuzzle with 5 parts. If it's based on xkcd titles "X - Part 1", ..., "X - Part 5", can I title the whole metapuzzle just "X"?
Or does that not technically count as an FTC entry

I would call that an entry.

ok, thanks

@Deusovi I was working on a puzzle about the federal trade commission, but I quit

1:24 AM
(The individual parts of the puzzle are titled like that.)

oh no, now it's not 15 characters :(

If you subtitle it Parts 1-5 I don't think people would mind

okay, that works.
just gotta do some formatting and last minute checking now

Does anyone have any productive ideas about "funk" in the C4? The smallest thing I have to replace it with is "odor", which doesn't work, and "fast funk" doesn't yield anything genre-wise

now it's posted!

Q: Secretary: Parts 1-5

RileyAn entry in Fortnightly Topic Challenge #35: Restricted Title 1 My friend worked as a secretary, and she left out of nowhere! I found a few strange notes/messages scattered around her room. Q: I Don't Want Directions

stacksfillerPart of the Fortnightly Topic Challenge #35: Restricted Title 1 There was supposed to be a preface with instructions here, but I must have misplaced it... Word 1 | What are you if you don't have directions? Word 2 | Where might you go if you don't have directions? Bonus | How might you ...

4:02 AM
ooh, I think I know what to do kinda? got 3 words entered, which is nice

are colors ok?
there are 5 on the top and 6 on the bottom

yeah, they should be fine
the fact that it's all in big monochromatic blocks is really helpful

4:19 AM
2 left on top section

Do you have a sheet?
-- just asking cause it might be fun to watch

ah, sorry, no - I was using an image editor
could make a sheet for the second one if you want

okie
nah its fine

I've figured out red, blue, and green for the second one, and have a guess at yellow

4:49 AM
no more luck since my last message :/

:(
well
would like to see what youve got

green is opposites, red is "action and item that does that action", blue is rhymes, yellow is... characters commonly seen together? supervisor and subordinate? something else?
no idea about orange and purple
also, looks like SON should be under FATHER, but then that leaves SON-BURNS, which looks wrong unless there's also a homophone thing hidden somewhere in green or purple

do you have #1 all filled in?

yep!
(LOST, being at the center and the root of the binary tree, is the answer to Q1 of course)
ah, got orange/purple
and yellow

yea that was a combination of not thinking it through + a weird coincidence
not intentional misdirection

5:00 AM
i figured that one could be wrong, because yellow would be weird then
definitely an interesting coincidence though
hm, this one's not a binary tree. is it intentional that the cell two below TUX has no word on the left?

huh
oh no
it's not
um
CRANKS + yellow I guess
i assume you know what i mean by that ^

yup
and got it
now to figure out the bonus and final answer

Sid
5:22 AM
The FTC now has 50 entries.

no luck with bonus and final answer either :/

About the C4: So "to the" is au, which wasn't mentioned in yesterday's discussion, when à la was? And I suspect that "for" might be a replacement indicator, where "the fifth" (E?) or "the fifth figure" (V?) must be replaced with AU.

Sid
@MOehm why is the fifth figure=V?

Because the fifth figure could be 5, I thought, but I'm not very happy with that. (I don't like using "fifth" or "five" for E, either.)
In Crypticspeak, "fifth figure" could also be FIG E, where FIG A would be the first figure.

Or FIG V.

Oh, yes. (But that's not a combo you're likely to find in a word, at least not as contiguous letters.)

Q: What number is to be assigned to the figure?

BAYMAXI was solving this puzzle, I thought number 9 is assigned is related to the number of sides of the square which is 4, like both of them are consecutive squares!. Five!

Ha!

Sid
@Sphinx Lol. Perfect timing @sphinx

Oh, I think I may have it, thanks to @EricTressler's suggestion that funk could be odour and after scouring the synonyms for fast:
@ManyPinkHats I think it is ST(e > AU)NCH
STAUNCH (fast) = STENCH (funk) with E (fifth figure) replaced with AU (to the French)

@BAYMAX Please don't push your question. You've aksed it only half an hour ago and weekends are slow here.

not pushing, just posted as I see much users here, in case some1 might not have noticed.

If you look closely, your question was brought to our attention eight or so messages ago. You're just producing unnecessary noise here any yes, I'd call that pushing.

okay, i did not see that, sorry.
