I believe that's a "late stage captialist that has ascended past a late stage captialist," or "late stage captialist 2"
the beauty of that question is that it's loaded so that the obvious answer, "stop giving your noney to rando corporations and start a charity," doesn't work because then you'd no longer be a venture captialist
really makes you thiink. thanks for sharing.

“Women in their 20s accounted for nearly 60 percent of all abortions performed in the U.S. in 2014 … These are children who otherwise would have been born and whose families could have contributed to the customer base of companies such as Toys R Us” http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/letters-the-editor/2018-04-16/letter-the-editor-abortions-taking-toll-businesses.html

I thought based on the hyphen that surely it was a parody news site

how is the stat even relevant

It's amazing that it ignores the absurdity of the argument and the fact that customers have nothing to do with why Toys R Us is being shut down

literally just thrown in so you could blame abortions AND millenials
the percentage tells you nothing about the volume and the age of the parent is meaningless

Some real hard hitting facts in this one
Also, "data show that"?
Is that how that word works?

Let’s start with the painful truth:

Too many people experience Stack Overflow¹ as a hostile or elitist place, especially newer coders, women, people of color, and others in marginalized groups.

Our employees and community have cared about this for a long time, but we’ve struggled to talk about it publicly or to sufficiently prioritize it in recent years. And results matter more than intentions.

Now, that’s not because most Stack Overflow contributors are hostile jerks. The majority of them are generous and kind. Sure, a few are…  just generous, I guess? But our active users regularly express thei …

a bunch of people were complaining about this on Twitter during the SO election, since they noticed Yvette was the only woman
glad to see an in depth post
nice points but as for "what to do" we already automatically detect and flag a bunch of mean comments
maybe if they make a non-mod review queue for comments, probably not feasible though (particularly since you'd have to require a pretty high rep)

@TimStone that's why i said "if this thing with North Korea works out". there's still the very real possibility that this whole thing falls apart because on the last minute Trump goes "until you show us proof that you're destroyed all your nukes i'm not going to talk peace"

@TimStone what's Germany's version of Yik Yak? Or, what the hell is Yik Yak?

yik yak is an anonymous location-based social media service

@TimStone I am having an extremely hard time coming to grips with the fact that this shooting was only (now) five days ago

The four members of the former Swedish supergroup ABBA say they have recorded new music for the first time since the mid-1980s. One of the 2 new songs will be released in December on a TV special tied to the band's 'avatar tour' project.
New ABBA was oddly not on my expectations for this year

1:57 PM
@Unionhawk I'm mostly with him on that actually, and his viewpoint is more accurately characterized as "Williamson's stances are abhorrent to me, The Atlantic should have done a better job of background research and decided not to hire him, but once they did hire him, they should probably have stuck with him absent further offenses. The criteria here are very uncertain and this was probably not the best long-term move for The Atlantic's culture."
@Unionhawk I'll stick with my previous position too that a person can't treat all of these cases as one off's. Charlottesville was a culmination of everything that came before and it's possible that a wiser previous approach may have precluded it from happening in the first place.
To get back to the article I originally linked, I think Friedersdorf continues to make an interesting case that amplifying bad speech x1M, even to push back against it, may not be the wisest course or the best way to help people. I can definitely see why he may feel that way.

@TimStone I had no clue it happened.

2:14 PM
@puzzlepiece87 I mean, but you have to acknowledge the facts of each individual case
everything is case-by-case
I also have opinions that will get me yelled at about the nature of this particular case incidentally

I forget the full stats
It's something like 25 bathrooms 17 bedrooms 2 elevators and a bunch more

@Unionhawk Everything needs to be looked at both case by case AND globally. What is best for a specific case might not be best for minimizing global harms. It's like with ransomware - sure it's better for you personally to pay and get your data back, but that makes life harder for everyone.

@Unionhawk Sometimes you just want to sleep on the cold side of the pillow.
Flipping the pillow is too much work, just sleep in a different bed every night.

2:34 PM
@quartata That's not even my main takeaway from the post.
My main takeaway from the post is that they're divorcing quality enforcement from comment kindness by giving us better tools to uphold quality. That way they can enforce Be Nice without needing a culture guard.
I'm saying this as someone who has downvoted questions and answers aggressively for help vampirism/feeding the vampires.

@RedRiderX "Data" is singular and plural, "datum" is singular.

@puzzlepiece87 I flat out reject that ignoring credible threats of violence is in any way beneficial to a broader scheme of freedom of speech. Sorry.
No. Absolutely not.

@Yuuki if you can afford 17 bedrooms you can afford active cooling for the pillows, I think
And once you have that you can just sleep in whatever bedroom takes your fancy that night

@ToxicFrog Do we have the technology for silent liquid-cooled pillows?

It was a bad call, it didn't aid in any grander project of activism or freedom of speech in any way, and I am not going to continue to discuss this.

2:42 PM
@Yuuki yes, although I'm not sure about practicality
(and it doesn't have to be liquid-cooled, either; you could give the pillow a thermally conductive weave and then run a heat pipe to a cooler part of the house)

Speaking of pillows, I need a new pillow.

But yeah, cold pillows best pillows.

There's something up with my current one where there's a small section that's devoid of filling.
That section is inconveniently placed at the base of my neck.

@Unionhawk Sure, but now you apply that to every case, and you also applied it before Charlottesville, without any real analysis of the impact on already disadvantaged groups of restricting speech in general. You're taking the FBI approach of pick the worst case and try to make it a broad example.
You can continue to make the same micro point and I will continue to make the same macro one.

No, it's not a broad example, it's a specific example

2:54 PM
That's exactly what I'm saying. I'm continually making a broad point and you're making a specific point. We're not really talking to each other, we're talking at each other.

We shouldn't be sacrificing individual communities on the altar of "well in the grand scheme of things,"
And we also shouldn't just flatly accept everything that an organization does is good just because their broad goals are good

I don't. However, that is generally how legal precedents work.
They are a legal organization.

They are not judges though
They are literally not bound by precedent to take on every case

...that has the same effect?

Being a law-oriented organization has the same effect as being a judge?

3:04 PM
No, not taking every case is the same as picking and choosing and allowing harmful precedents to be set that can then affect disadvantaged groups disproportionately.
It doesn't matter that they personally were not the ones setting the precedent. It matters that the precedent was set at all.
And obviously representation matters or we wouldn't even have lawyers, just judges.

Well I'm glad that it is precedent that a gathering can recieve a permit despite credible threats of violence in the city of charlottesville

In any case, I acknowledge that you are correctly arguing for a local max.

worth it

Yes, there it is.
Good for you, keep arguing for that.
Like I said, we're not really talking to each other.
If you keep fixating on just one case instead of everything that lead up to it, you will continue to locally max out.

@puzzlepiece87 Did the ACLU pursue the case or did they file an amicus brief?
If the former, then the precedent wouldn't have been set at all if they weren't involved.

3:07 PM
@Yuuki Not positive, I'm pretty sure they initiated the case.

Otherwise, then yeah they didn't set a precedent.

They pursued the case.

So if they didn't get involved, then the judiciary wouldn't have made a decision, and therefore no precedent would've been set either one way or another.

Pursuing the case was a bad call, I reject the idea that they had to do it (they didn't, at all), and I'm fucking out.

The precedent in question at the time (though later evidence (direct threats and organization of violence by the white nationalist organizers) came out that distorted the question) was that was whether a group could be denied an organizing permit without evidence, just based upon who the group is.

3:10 PM
This is exhausting, and we don't even have a potential incident in the future anymore (spencey dropped his suit against the university of cincinnati, and the university is not planning to host him for now)

@Unionhawk Lol whatever, we talk about white nationalists in this channel almost every day. "No potential incident in the future"

@puzzlepiece87 Hold on, you can't in one sentence go "without evidence", and in a parenthetical go "actually there was evidence"
hold on

@Unionhawk I'm sorry, do you not understand the words "at the time"?

@puzzlepiece87 Huh?
What does people talking in a chat channel about white nationalist have to do with precipitating fundamentalist rallies?

@puzzlepiece87 There is not a specific, mass event scheduled in Cincinnati anymore.
There is not a specific threat against my community
right now
anymore

3:13 PM
@Yuuki @Unionhawk is repeatedly going into what was best for one specific moment, without looking at how the same philosophy potentially lead to that specific moment in the first place. Now he's saying because he doesn't know of any future incidents (even though there will obviously be some), that there doesn't need to be any macro outlook.

There was

I don't think @Uni means "any possible event spontaneous or not in the nebulous future" when he says "potential incident".

@Yuuki You're probably right. I wasn't exactly sure how to interpret what he said. I interpreted as "I think this local max was right, and there's no immediate threat, so I'm done talking."
But you probably have it right, I wasn't sure.

Probably should've asked what "local max" means before.

Okay so it's a math term but basically

3:15 PM
@puzzlepiece87 No, "this is exhausting even though there isn't a specific threat anymore" meant "this would be more exhausting if I also had to prepare for direct counterdemonstration in the near future"

@Unionhawk Thanks for clarifying, I appreciate it.

I know what it means in math, but I'm not certain how the term is applied in this context.

@Yuuki If you have all the situations and you're trying to minimize harm in them, that may require you to take actions that might not be best for one specific situation.

Make no mistake we are still doing the work.

Oh okay, then what I'm saying more specifically is

3:17 PM
Just because Spencey can't (or won't) pay $10,000 because he has no money and because we don't make it any fun since most of his goons get scared away, doesn't mean that our work is done

If for example, we always try to tackle white nationalism through violent physical and verbal opposition, that may not be the best way to minimize white nationalist member numbers and harm caused.

It is necessary to confront them directly, but it is not sufficient
And it would be better for the safety of our communities if we didn't have to confront them directly

Similarly, not defending the 1st amendment in white nationalist cases could potentially have a net negative impact on disadvantaged groups once the impact to their ability to organize safely is considered.
Right, but it wasn't necessary for example to punch Richard Spencer in DC - that gave him a ton more voice then he had recently
Stuff like that leads to a situation where he can have an enormous Charlottesville rally.

He was already being interviewed???????
He already had that glowing Mother Jones piece?

What you're saying doesn't contradict what I'm saying
And it doesn't address anything Friedersdorf said in his piece either

3:21 PM
Are you suggesting that we caused the events of A12 by directly opposing them.

Also, again, I'm not sure whether Friedersdorf is right

Is that where we're currently at
why am I still here

I think he's making a well-reasoned case
Similarly, @GodEmperorDune to me makes a well-reasoned case for more direct opposition when he says to listen to those who are suffering and their solutions for a problem
And has also given several other good examples
So I'm not sure

We have to do both

@Unionhawk Sorry, I don't understand, what are the two things in both?

3:22 PM
Not to interject because I'm noping out of this conversation at the moment but if you've ever though "Wow I wish someone would just give me money", consider being friends with Michael Cohen:
Trump lawyer loaned taxi mogul $26 million before election: report http://hill.cm/zyo01zN

... do I want to know how Cohen has this much money?

the mafia

I mean I know lawyers make a lot of money, but I didn't think they made this much money.

@Unionhawk No, cause is not the right word there. The white nationalists and everyone who went are responsible for their own actions. Cause also implies responsibility.
@Unionhawk Yup the mafia

@puzzlepiece87 And great responsibility means great power.
wait

3:25 PM
@Unionhawk But I am saying that if you're trying to globally minimize harm, it's important to look at how every past situation leads into the present and look at different approaches and see if there's something different that might be more successful.

Our organizing led to the ending of spencey's tour wholesale. That's pretty well established at this point.
traditional workers party ran the fuck away from MSU whenever that happened (march?)

I think with A12, it was a really horrible situation, lots of emotions about it, and it's easy to get some tunnel vision and say "This was what went wrong here" and pick that as a cause rather than a contributing factor.
@Unionhawk We will see, hopefully you are right.
That's just one dude.

sure

I am absolutely rooting for you to be 100% right though. I hope that brings it to an effective end for sure. Thank you all for working so hard on that.
I also agree that with Spencer being in such a bad financial position it is unlikely he personally will be able to continue as an event organizer and you all were absolutely instrumental in that. Great job. :)

@Yuuki It pays to fix things for rich people, I guess (and he owns property, etc.)

3:32 PM
Incidentally, I'm laughing so hard at GOP reactions to Puerto Rico's bid for statehood. "We can't have two more Democratic senators!"
Well, if you guys weren't so violently racist and anti-not white people, then you'd probably be getting two Republican senators.
Hispanic populations tend to be both socially and fiscally conservative which would place them firmly in the GOP platform if it weren't also for the "only white people" plank.

@TimStone On one hand, f--k Democrats including dumb partisan language. On the other hand, f--k Republicans for vetoing based meaningless words.

(GTA IV's music licenses have expired so there's a mandatory patch to remove the content)

tl;dr f--k everyone

Yeah that's uh, that's not really a compelling answer my dude

@TimStone That brings up the question of why movies don't have to be updated but video games do.
Probably something in the contract language, but still.
I mean, the tweets point out that some later distributions of movies and TVs do remove licensed music but that's not really the same thing.

user15026

I suspect it might have to do with the games being like...online enabled? So they're not considered as, idk, static as movies/TV

Because they can be patched and added to etc etc

I'm not sure if they actually have to be updated or not

(That's just random guessing)

But they can't continue to sell the game with the content, sooo

@Unionhawk no but you guys seem to have a fetish or something for like random dumb tweets and it's noise imo

I'm not sure fetish is the right word, but honestly, I would kinda agree. (And I say that knowing I'm not absolved from this as well).

@Yuuki his family said something about 'he couldn't go on' so it's not a direct confirmation but seems pretty damning
@Ash penchant would have been better
Yeah me neither but it's like all the time

user15026
@GnomeSlice Agreed, that's a good word

Are we going to have to define what counts as political and what's just a dumb tweet that shouldn't be posted anywhere now or

I mean it's obvious to me but if it helps then maybe yeah

You thought the tweet about a reporting asking Cohen about a major news event of the day was somehow not news though 🤔

Or do we just want to say that a response to some """libertarian""" type with a bad take can go in bridge now
Because I'm pretty sure I know the answer to that question

If I wanted to go on Twitter I'd just go on Twitter why does the response need to be here at all
I'm not explaining this correctly
@TimStone in that case maybe yes indeed

user15026
all I'm asking for is maybe people stop and consider if posting yet another stupid take on all the stupid actually makes sense to be posting - I don't want this room to become a mess of stupid takes getting amplification

Rep. Meehan (R-PA) has resigned saying he "totally didn't commit sexual misconduct and would be found innocent but an investigation would be a lot to put his staff through so bye"

@TimStone I know it's juvenile of me, but I always chuckle a bit when a politician mentions "the staff" in these kind of cases.
