6:00 PM
yup, but as I have mounted /sdb4 to /various, grub will not know, so i did
menuentry "gparted" {
set isofile="gparted-live-0.31.0-1-amd64.iso"
loopback loop (hd1,4)$isofile
linuxefi (loop)/live/vmlinuz boot=live components config findiso=$isofile ip=frommedia toram=filesystem.squashfs union=overlay username=user
initrdefi (loop)/live/initrd.img
}
Can I mound 2 partitions to /?
(never tried)

no ! puh ... not mount to /various

@Fabby not to / simultaneously, you'd have one clobber the other for dominance. And a lot of selfdestruction

create a folder with the name "various" on sdb4 ... put the iso in that folder

@cl-netbox OK.

set isofile="/various/gparted-live-0.31.0-1-amd64.iso"
the iso has to be in the folder various on sdb4

6:04 PM
fab-root@fab-ux-predator:/various/various
$ whichdisk gparted-live-0.31.0-1-amd64.iso
/dev/sdb4
editing 40_custom
update-grub2

[cl@cl-fw-1 ~]$ sudo ls -l /run/media/cl/system/various

doing same
sudo ls -l /various/various/gparted-live-0.31.0-1-amd64.iso
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 333447168 Apr 16 19:53 /various/various/gparted-live-0.31.0-1-amd64.iso

wrong
why /various/various ?

don't forget sdb4 is mounted to /various

what are you doing ?

6:08 PM
I can re-mount it to /mnt
I made a mistake earlier.

no
please tell me the label of sdb4

checking

create the label system
remove the mount point
this way it will never work

fab-root@fab-ux-predator:~
$ sudo umount /dev/sdb4
fab-root@fab-ux-predator:~
$ sudo rd /various/
fab-root@fab-ux-predator:~
$
Which label do you want sdb4 to have? @cl-netbox

@Fabby system ... then umount it

6:15 PM
It's ext4. Does it need to be FAT?

@Fabby ext4 is okay
please unmount that partition

I think we must be misunderstanding one another: to label sdb4 (name it) it must be unmounted.

then open Nautilus
yes it has to be unmounted

nemo open

not name ... LABEL @Fabby

6:18 PM
Yupo
changing...

then open nautilus click on other locations
then click the partition system
now create a folder various
put the iso in that folder
done @Fabby ?

Where is other locations?

nautilus
left sidebar

good

6:22 PM

@Fabby is that ubuntu nautilus ?

what ??? how old is your system ???

16.04
I like LTS and I use nemo anyway.

okay ... please give me ls -l /media/user/system

6:26 PM
So where do you want me to mount sdb4?

ubuntu automatically mounts to /media/user

no it doesn't:
fab-root@fab-ux-predator:~
$ ls /media/fab-root/
nothing there.

please mount it to that directory

do you want me to mount /dev/sdb4 in
OK

create the folder various
put the iso in that folder
done ?

6:29 PM
fab-root@fab-ux-predator:~
$ sudo mount /dev/sdb4 /media/fab-root/
fab-root@fab-ux-predator:~
$ sudo md /media/fab-root/various
fab-root@fab-ux-predator:~
$

what is that various there ?

copying

it has to be media/fab-root/system
you labeléd sdb4 as system

huh? the label of the partition sdb4 is now system

sudo mount /dev/sdb4 /media/fab-root/ has to show /media/fab-root/system

6:32 PM
root@fab-ux-predator:/media/fab-root/various

please create a new folder various there

@cl-netbox no it didn't

you showed me the screenshot where sdb4 was system
best is you reboot

Yup, but when I did the command:
sudo mount /dev/sdb4 /media/fab-root/

reboot

6:34 PM
it mounted /dev/sdb4 in /media/fab-root
not in /media/fab-root/system

please reboot the system

and try booting iso?
C U in 2 minutes...

no reboot and then give me ls -l /media/fab-root after you mounted sdb4 there @Fabby
we are close to get it done
I hope ... :)

6:47 PM
damn
I missed that: I rebooted.

@Fabby this means that the label system was not set ... one more proof that one should never work with disks from within a running system

6:58 PM
One thing I'm thinking of is: sdb is an SSD
not a HDD
Does that matter to grub?

completely unimportant ...anyway ... now create a folder various there
put the iso into that folder

It's already there and owned by root
root@fab-ux-predator: /media/fab-root/various
# ls -l
total 325632
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 333447168 Apr 16 20:31 gparted-live-0.31.0-1-amd64.iso

aha
it is on the top dir
not in a folder
wait please

huh? no...

menuentry "gparted" {

initrdefi (loop)/live/initrd.img
}
sudo update-grub

7:01 PM
Hold on, look here:
root@fab-ux-predator:/media
# df --portability .
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on

@Fabby I managed to setup fan control properly so it's working out pretty good now!

/dev/sdb2 61388820 22158432 36088964 39% /

Graphics card is a tad on the old side so it still stutters when I play certain games but it's an overall improvement from integrated graphics xD

@Fabby what do you want with sdb2 now ?

# df --portability fab-root/various/
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/sdb4 3997376 333820 3437460 9% /media/fab-root

7:03 PM
Please Fabby :

menuentry "gparted" {
set isofile="/gparted-live-0.31.0-1-amd64.iso"
loopback loop (hd1,4)$isofile
linuxefi (loop)/live/vmlinuz boot=live components config findiso=$isofile ip=frommedia toram=filesystem.squashfs union=overlay username=user
initrdefi (loop)/live/initrd.img
}

so media is on sdb2 but /media/fab-root is on sdb4
and there is a directory various and that's where the file is!
Following orders, sir!
e 40_custom

then sudo update-grub
then try if iso boots

I'm going to boot into busybox and see what the name of the SSD is in grub
maybe it's a weirdo one

@Fabby please compare it with my disk setup :

these are the partitions from my second built-in disk being mounted ->

[cl@cl-fw-1 ~]$ ls -l /run/media/cl

df --portability /run/media/cl/media | tail -1 | cut --delimiter=' ' --fields 1
df --portability /run/media/cl/rescue | tail -1 | cut --delimiter=' ' --fields 1

then create an alias for df --portability $1 | tail -1 | cut --delimiter=' ' --fields 1 and call it whichdisk

Q: Removing a USB device but leaving power?

esacI have a dashcam in my RV that is plugged into my Asus Tinkerboard (like an RPi). It is getting power from the usb port of the tinker. I would like to leave it connected to the tinker so that I can access the files remotely. The problem is that the camera detects access of the file system and swi...

no idea what that should be good for ... but here is the output :
[cl@cl-fw-1 ~]$ df --portability /run/media/cl/data | tail -1 | cut --delimiter=' ' --fields 1
/dev/sda1

@Fabby cut the cut: df --output=source $1 | tail -1

@dessert trying
Cool!

@Fabby all that is unimportant for what we want to achieve ... the entries have to match EXACTLY the real location where the iso file resides ! :)

Found this in grub.cfg:
set root='hd1,gpt2'
going to try the following:
loopback loop (hd1,gpt4)$isofile
rebooting
BRB

7:39 PM
@Fabby I have to go now - please excuse me - in case it still doesn't work : we have to continue tomorrow ... good night and sleep well ... bye :)

@cl-netbox sleep tight!
maybe take a (chat ;P) room then – not that I don't like the activity, this room's often dead silent at times like that, but it'll make it much easier to keep track, especially when lots of terminal output is exchanged…

@cl-netbox Good night and thanks for all the blood, sweat and tears!

at least you don't get interrupted by chatty bots and sneaky mods there ;)

2 hours later…
9:46 PM
My CPU won't go under 24c annoying...

10:14 PM
@TheXed You have a few solutions for that:
1. turn it off
2. work in a freezer
3. buy a can of CO2, turn it upside down, spray directy onto CPU.
>:-)
@cl-netbox: found it!
My machine doesn't start counting from 0 for its HDDs in grub.
so I went to the grub menu, pressed 'c' and did an ls and found:
(hd0) (hd1) (hd1,gpt4) (hd1,gpt3) (hd1,gpt2) (hd1,gpt1) (hd2) ... (hd3) ...
so hd0 is present but not recognised as a HD as it gave some error too, so I think it must be the NVRAM that has file storage defined in EFI or something similarly stupid.
So I was right all the time, you were right all the time, but the compter was wrong!!!
:D :D :D
cc @dessert @ByteCommander

nice finding, you should write a Q&A about it

true... going to do that now @dessert

10:31 PM
@Fabby ping me when it's ready :) I'm going to sleep, half my family is vomiting now and I have seen enough of it for one day. :D

Gute nacht! (Grippe???)

@Fabby lol. None of which are reasonable solutions.

@Fabby Gastroenteritis I suppose, first the baby, then the three-year-old, now my wife and the six-year-old.
;)

@TheXed Whoever told you I'm a reasonable person???

Q: Allow content to display outside of LogicalDisplay Rect AOSP/LineageOS

TheWandererI'm working on adding second screen functionality to AOSP for the LG V20. So far, I've managed to set up the offsets so normal content doesn't overflow into the second screen area, and I've added the second screen window type (SIGNBOARD). The offsets are managed in LogicalDisplay. For a lot of ...

11:14 PM
@TheWanderer You're doing this on 8 now?

Android 8?
because you say: "I've been following how LG originally did it (in Android 7.0, so things are slightly different). "
