hi @Jamiec
I saw your answer on the now delete meta post about comments, just my 2 cents about not having a problem, a prime example is this: aviation.stackexchange.com/q/24733/14897
note the dates
now, would you rather sift thru chatter in forum style? or just read the answer?
IMO that post (and many others) was so problematic to SE's style, that when that answer was posted finally, I gave it a bounty

eh, I would clear the comment there now, but I'll wait for Jamiec

and about the upset user from earlier today, that user can't tell who's done what and been posting forum-like answers -- so instead of worrying about them misunderstanding what happened, I'd recommend a mod point them in the right direction of how this site works
this was IIRC discussed on the main meta, and I don't remember the specifics, but I think if the question is old and all I have is a partial answer, submitting a partial answer is fine and can even be accepted if it was helpful -- of course I don't mean link-only <hey I found this link> kind of answer
but what's an answer and what isn't is a different topic we can discuss later

@ymb1 I refuse to touch that post again

@Federico ?
oh
I mean leave the user a comment or chat with them, clearly they are blaming the wrong person
not you you, any mod
and honestly I don't think turning a notice into a question was the right move, it was already +16/-3
which shows consensus
but what's done is done

yeah, I was surprised that anyone would complain at your actions after that post

1:40 PM
please speak with @Jamiec. I don't want to hear anything anymore about that.
I said exactly what you said, apparently is not enough. It is not for me to explain why.

Listen guys Ive been back from holiday for a day and a half and im still trying to catch up with work stuff. I give as much time as I can to mod stuff here but I have a day job.
@ymb1 Ive read your point above - Im failing to understand what point you're making (maybe because my head is everywhere)
I actually think Federico is right - but just unilaterally deciding that was IMO the wrong thing to do. I fully expect the community to decide its the right course of action.

@Jamiec the answer was buried in a lot of comments, it took 10 months for an answer to be posted -- what makes SE standout is you read the question, and read the answer, not to try to figure out what 5 people are saying in chat-like comments

@ymb1 small heads-up: be sure that you are both talking about the same post.

... ok but would the answer have been posted at all without the inclusion of some partial answers in comments? They're not ALWAYS a bad thing. on SO they 100% are ALWAYS a bad thing. On here, where someone might have a nugget of info which helps someone find the right answer, I dont think they are.

also WB, also also I had no idea the post was re-posted as as a question in meta due to disagreement between the mods -- I only just realizes from @Federico 's comment about not wanting to hear about it again
@Jamiec there are a lot of instances where wrong answers are left in comments and people upvote it--which again goes against SE's overall goal

1:48 PM
Again, I dont disagree with the result, just the way it was unilaterally decided that that is the policy we should have.

@Jamiec it was vote-able :D had +16/-3

@Jamiec I don't think it was unilaterally decided. I think the earlier meta post was just a reminder of the existing policy. If people were against that it would have been obvious from the reaction - you just have to look at answers and vote counts of unpopular announcements on meta.se to see that.

anyway for me it was a surprise and I welcomed it right away--so I am biased

I think its still mistrepresented. Of course we should not accept answers in comments, the question was whether it is acceptable to post a bit of information in a comment which might be relevant to an answer.
Which is where this whole thing started
"I think those speeds have to do with fast vs slow aircraft"
... that helps me research a good answer. And is not a pseudo answer IMO

link please? as I didn't get that reference

Q: Why is runway friction measured at 65 km/h and 95 km/h?

Savvas MarkianidisWhy do we measure at 65km/h and 95km/h when we do a Runway Friction Measurement? Are there differences?

Thats what started Federico and I discussing this this morning
Anyway - as I said to federico this morning - we are all aguing the same point.

I don't think that's informative enough even to be a pseudo-answer

I agree with the policy. I just dont think we as mods should go around deleting everything which might help others answer a question. Many times I have seen an interesting question, seen some comments which have led me to be able to research an answer.
I think Federico was too quick to delete the comments on that question as "Pseudo answer. mod hammer"
So I restored them, and moved them to chat. No great harm IMO, but it caused some upset

And I deleted them because it was not leading to an answer. Instead the OP got what they wanted from comments and they have not gotten a proper real answer.

...yet

1:56 PM
IMO, PK had a link and should have posted an answer, and the 'I guess' comment isn't really helpful, reminds me of pprune or airliners.net where everyone is guessing--

sure.
thats a good point

when I guess, especially about aerodynamics, I make it clear in the answer one way or the other
and it's the community's job to vote up/down
not just up

@Jamiec it caused upset because you were accusing me of doing things one-side while at the same time you one-sidedly reverted my decision without discussing it with me

Federico, one was a whole site thing... and one was a small localised issue. HArdly the same thing.
Use some perspective

take it to the mod room, guys

2:04 PM
Dan its already been discussed. AFAIC its done.

@Federico the SR-71 meta post, if you want to mark it status-complete and/or post an update so I can accept it, would be nice

ok, 1 moment

Q: Should Aviation.SE allow answers posted in comments?

FedericoSince there has been heavy debate on the previous announcement, and complaints that it was not posted as a question, here it is in question format. From the network guidelines: When shouldn't I comment? Answering a question or providing an alternate solution to an existing answer; inste...

@Feeds that took its time appearing

I had a comment thread deleted the other day for "answer in comments" reasons. It was on aviation.stackexchange.com/q/50398/8730 I had asked for a few details, preparing to write an answer. But the details indicated that my answer was not correct. The OP asked me why I had asked and I told him my thoughts, but indicated in the comment that they were not the answer.
That said, I wasn't upset that it was deleted, because it was not correct. And the details I had asked for were added to the question, so no foul. But I do agree with Jamiec that sometimes sometimes incomplete thoughts can give someone else a starting place to find the correct answer
Maybe moving to chat is a better option?

4:27 PM
@TomMcW When I arrived, a few comments were already deleted by the OP, so the conversation was not really understandable. That said, as you acknowledge, the additional useful info has been edited in the question. Your comment got read and acknowledged by the OP, so I saw no value in keeping it (you yourself said "since you say this, it cannot be the answer")

@Federico No problem. I was cool with it. I'm just wondering what should we do with that kind of thing? When you have a possible line of reasoning, but you don't know if it's correct or you can't find a source, but somebody else might know of one

that's a different thing. I think I would keep it as a comment, but at the condition that it is not even a partial answer.
Example
Q: What is the regulation for X?
Ok comment: I don't know, but I have searched here with these keywords.
Partial answer: It is somewhere in PartYY.

4:42 PM
Would that second response be acceptable as an answer?

if noone answers with more detailed info, I'd say yes, that's the point.
if you feel that a particularly large amount of work is missing, you could post the answer as a wiki, but it would not be required.
see also the example in the starred message from ymb1

Are you taking about the Concorde one?

no the one that Jamiec moved to chat
concorde I'll clean it soon
the one about the runway friction test. To me there was nothing to save there. It was either added to the post, or was a "guess" or a partial answer.

5:02 PM
Yeah, it was definitely a guess. And it was the wrong guess since the runway was 15 years old.

I'm trying to build up the courage to contradict PK on something aerodynamic. I know, I know, not a smart thing to do, but I think he's ever so slightly off. It's an old answer so maybe he won't see it and I'll be ok.

@TomMcW I think I've seem him take corrections pretty well

@fooot It's just that feeling of, "I've got to be wrong."

Either way we can all learn from it.

8:44 PM
Hopefully.
