"if my parents tell Anne’s mother they can’t make it, she’ll probably get defensive and/or miffed." Let them. If you can't go you can't go, and if they can't understand the reasons why then why should you even care about them? Blunt but honest. You need to be firm with these people as they clearly care more about themselves than about you. — Lightness Races in Orbit 25 secs ago

Hi
I'm back from my holiday

7:25 AM
How has it been? I missed you :)
(As in, I noticed you weren't around :P )

7:50 AM
nice overall
spent the last 4 days doing nothing but reading a really good scifi novel

Sound perfect actually ;)

Q: Should I have gotten up for my sister?

blabberMe and my sister have a relationship that goes up and down, sometimes we can go through one door and sometimes definitely not.... Right now its somewhere in the middle mostly because we don't see each other all the time any more, not a bad thing per say. Now this morning I woke up and went down...

Sibling dynamics vary considerably. You should consider adding a tag to indicate what country you live in or ethnic group (if relevant). You said "The seat of my sister was closest to the TV..". Why did you characterize it as being your sister's seat? You all have/respect favourite seats? Because your sister has declared that it is hers in the past? Because it is literally hers e.g. she purchased it for her exclusive use or she owns the house or.. Some context of how you or your family normally interact would help give good advice. — Thisiswhatyoudo 47 secs ago

@Tinkeringbell the trilogy is called "remembrance of earth's past"

Matched regex(es) ["you\\W(really)?(need\\Wto|should)"]

7:59 AM
it's a scifi adaptation concerning one of the theories developed to solve the fermi paradox

@Magisch Doesn't ring a bell :/

probably pretty obscure

But I know the fermi paradox, that's always creeping me out :P

and heavily laden with physics terminology and a lot of concepts that you'd get in a college physics course
so it was pretty hard for me to understand, but very interesting nonetheless

Uhmmm... I'll stick with Indiana Jones then ;)

8:01 AM
the theory is called the dark forest theory
premises are that all intelligent life's primary goal is self preservation and that the universe and thus the ressources contained within aren't infinite, only very big

it follows logically that the only course of action in keeping with self preservation once you've discovered another civilization is to eradicate it

Ahhh
Now we're talking grin

Imagine two civilizations, one very adanced, another very primitive

A J
@Magisch Hello

8:03 AM
the advanced one knows about the primitive one but not the other way around, what's the advanced one to do?
If they contact them or leave them alone, they might have a technological boom and surpass the advanced one, and then eradicate them

@Magisch antrhopology?
@Magisch That's a stretch ;)

A J
Afternoon all!

@AJ Heya!
Sorry, we were busy discussing aliens ;)

@Tinkeringbell think of all of our technology
we took less then 300 years to get from semi-medieval to that
that's the blink of an eye in the cosmic scale

A J
@Tinkeringbell which alien?

8:06 AM
@Magisch Meh... Middle ages weren't as illiterate as some people thought ;)

so the only logical course of action that bears no substantial risk to your own self preservation is to eradicate every form of intelligent life you find
because if you found them, if they progressed to your level they could find you and in turn threaten you

@Magisch Just slam a be nice policy on the universe, problem solved :P

even if you know they're no malicious, you don't know that they know that you're not malicious
this goes deeper, it's called the chain of suspicion

@Magisch Hahaha you're beginning to make me paranoid ;) I dunno, I'd like meeting an alien I think...

assume I know you're not malicious and you know I'm not
we should get alongr right? nope, because I don't know that you know that I'm not malicious. Even if I know that I don't know that you know that I know that you know that

8:09 AM
Okay, so what's the next step?

It goes on ad infinitum

Hahaha ;) It's an interesting theory to build a book upon ;)

the inevitable conclusion is that you're a threat regardless of what I know about you or you know about me
also the reason why no two intelligent life forms on earth can coexist if they know about each other

@Magisch this sounds awfully like Cixin Liu's "three body problem" trilogy
Which gives the single best explanation for the Fermi paradox ever

@RoryAlsop That
is what it is

8:13 AM
@Magisch Meh, there's been archaeological/gene evidence for multiple species living on earth and co-habitating/reproducing

It is brilliant

I've spent every waking hour since thursday morning reading it
that's where I got the name "dark forest theory" from because that's what it's called in the book and what the second book is also called

I ended up buying it in paper and kindle form as I enjoyed it so much

the series is called remembrance of earth's past according to amazon

I didn't know that

8:14 AM
I'm almost convinced that this is actually the explaination for the real world fermi paradox

As an answer, it does just work, doesn't it :-)

@RoryAlsop The only thing that could torpedo that theory is if the universe was actually infinite or energy preservation could be tricked to not be a thing
although I did have to spend several hours researching theorethical physics because they don't hold back with the physics in these books

@Magisch or another nice theory I saw that held that entropy was not consistent across the universe, but only locally relevant
In which case, local maxima/minima would drive behaviours

that would also mean our models predicting the expansion of the universe would be inaccurate
since they assume consistent entropy

The discussion on it posited that as long as fluctuations balanced out, expansion could still be as we see it :-)

8:23 AM
although I haven't fully grasped what happens to the earth at the end
this sounds like some really weird dimensional displacement bomb

9:23 AM
This is going to be a loooong day. Heat doesn't work :(
It's freezing at the office now

JAD
9:38 AM
rip

I just logged a bitchy call ;)
Let's hope enough people complain so they'll take it seriously :)
Ohh... instant reply!
'It's already mentioned to the owner of the building'... Yeah well, go mention it again! Because apparently they don't know!

@Tinkeringbell :(

JAD
sounds like at least something is getting heated over there

Hahaha ah well, our company isn't known for being perfect :P I hate getting mails stating 'we know' > Then make sure I know too
We get mass e-mails for the most trivial stuff... so you'd figure a cold building would get more priority

@Tinkeringbell My day?

9:44 AM
@Loong Hahaha ;) Even more looooong :P
But now that you're talking, how's your day going? :)

Terrible

Whoops... sorry for asking? Wanna rant about it? :)

I should read more on this site. I might have questions.

@Loong Who doesn't ;)
IPS questions? Or questions about the way the site works?

IPS

9:47 AM
Ahh ;) No spoilers then, just ask :)

One part is several issues at work. Everything is in chaos. And my contract is ending soon. So I just took my remaining vacation days. I have no idea how it will continue. And a large part of this mess is due to missing communication.
The other part is my relationship. We are from different countries and cultures. Classic IPS ;-)
Not to mention that she is still married and has two children.

But, if you're on vacation until your contract ends... shouldn't you just stop worrying about it? No longer your problem :P

The cultures one is always difficult, I can't imagine that in a relationship. My workplace is pretty multicultural and that's already more than I can handle sometimes...

Uhhh... that last part doesn't sound too good...
Or is this the kind of relationship where one can have multiple partners?

@Tinkeringbell She actually proposed that to her husband. :-o

@Loong Lemme guess, didn't go so well? :/ Marriage seems to me a pretty monogamous thing ;)

But she is also considering a divorce.

9:52 AM
the tangled webs our lives weave

@Loong I hope for you she does that ;)

@Magisch exactly feels like that
@Tinkeringbell thanks
One problem is that people in her culture don't talk so much. I feel like a hobbit talking to an ent.

10:14 AM
@Loong Does alcohol help? ;) Best talks I have with some people is after a good glass of wine
But otherwise, all you can do is ask to the point of being annoying :/

@Tinkeringbell It actually does! Although people in her culture need something stronger. Then they even start talking in my language. :-D

JAD
@Tinkeringbell idk, pressuring someone to get a divorce in favor of you feels pretty...
not sure how to finish that nicely

@JAD petty? :P
I don't think loongs is pushing anyone?
Maybe she already started looking before she even decided on a divorce (not that I like that, but I'm a very boring monogamous person ;) )

@Tinkeringbell I am clearly not pushing. She came to me. She is unhappy in her marriage and tries to find a way out.

Still, JAD does have a point... it sounds like something from a book/movie. Please be careful and don't let her toy with you :)

10:19 AM
Yeah. Sounds like a bad movie.

JAD
10:44 AM
@Tinkeringbell not really what I was going for, but sure

11:05 AM
almost Valentine's Day <3
Feb 14th

@D.Hutchinson Meh, I'm more fond of the 15th :P

A J
@Tinkeringbell lol
why?

@AJ That's when the discount on chocolate and soap start ;)

@Tinkeringbell haha why?
haha ... I was totally guessing that, too :)
wait ... soap??
that's good to know ...
I'm on my last bar of soap :(

@D.Hutchinson Yeah, there's often those fancy gift sets that they start discounting :)

11:15 AM
Oo I see ...

A J
@Tinkeringbell There is a running and very old joke here about Children's Day that is celebrated on November 14th. ;)

@AJ Oh? Tell me?

JAD
9 months after feb14

A J
Exactly. :P

JAD
where 9 months is the average pregnancy period

11:18 AM
hahaha ...

@JAD Ohhh... :P I was too lazy to do that math :P

JAD
so if you're born in november, you could assume your parents had a lovely valentine's

@JAD Hahaha, I was born august ;)

A J
yup ;)

I can't think of a day that would coincide with. I'll have to check for power outages :P

JAD
11:19 AM
@Tinkeringbell hah
those are so infrequent here, I doubt htere is any correlation

@JAD Because they're so infrequent, the rise in births/pregnancies is often even more pronounced :P

JAD
the effect would have to be huge to bear any significance

And there were a lot of kids in 'basisschool' that had their birthdays in August :P
I think there were 5 in my class alone ;)

JAD
half my class' was around january

A J
One of my friends' birthday falls on November 14th. We don't wish him "happy birthday" but we wish "Happy Children's Day" ;)

@Tinkeringbell it was flagged for mod attention

Answering it won't prevent migration?

Sid
1:46 PM
@D.Hutchinson yep. Best day to just sleep soundly.
Or join Bajrang Dal. :P

@Sid What is that?

@Sid Way to keep a conversation going :P

Sid
It is a running joke in educational institutions here. If you don't have a Date on Valentine's Day, join that and search for couples to harass. :P
To be honest, no one really does that. It is just a joke people like to laugh about

@Sid It sounds like fun :P
I was a bit confused when I saw the 'militant organisation' bit ;)
But I guess there must be similar jokes over here :)

Sid
1:52 PM
@Tinkeringbell see the controversies section of that wiki page

@Sid I noticed ;)

Sid
Those people believe that Valentine's Day is against our culture and hence, no one should mark that occasion and blah blah blah

@Sid Ah... well, aside from the 'against culture' there's a similar sentiment here, but it has more to do with 'it's a commercial thing, not a religious one'...

Sid
The joke, though is so greatly publicised that students in my uni now have whatsapp groups with "Bajrang Dal" and "Anti-Bajrang Dal". It's hilarious to see all this.

There's many people in my environment that only celebrate religious days, and not 'commercial' ones (the hypocrits buy presents for Christmas though!)

Sid
1:59 PM
@Tinkeringbell commercial?

@Sid Yeah... they're arguing that stuff like Mother's Day isn't a day to celebrate, because it's just there to sell people stuff
Some people put Valentine's day in the same category, although I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Saint Valentine (but that's the wrong religion for those people ;) )

Sid
Duh. Arguing with people over that is akin to hitting oneself with a hammer

@Sid Yeah, they're fun people :P
I often don't even listen when they start it anymore...

I enjoy not buying anything on any of those commercial nonsense days. I do tend to give my loved ones presents, but just when I decide to, not at the whim of some commercial decision

I'll tell people I'm busy crafting a blanket for my mom for Mother's Day and they'll go ranting on how they don't celebrate it ('any more') since they were so enlightened that it's only for commercial purposes
@RoryAlsop Yeah well... Mother's Day is one of those few days my mom will accept a gift without complaining ;)
Other than that, I agree ;)

2:04 PM
@Tinkeringbell actually - for my mum I do make an exception, as a card on that day will make her smile

@RoryAlsop Hahaha see! They got you too ;)

@Tinkeringbell I do this for father's day

I think what bothers me most is the 'holier-than-thou' attitude by adding a religious argument into the discussion :)

my dad will not really accept gifts on christmas, only on father's day and his birthday

@Magisch My dad always says he doesn't know what to ask... so we usually just gift him a weekend in a hotel with mom once a year, on random weekends :P
@Magisch Yeah, we don't do gifts on Christmas either, but that is because we celebrate Sinterklaas ;)

2:06 PM
@Tinkeringbell if people try that I argue the case for all religious celebrations being fake. Co-opting proper pagan celebrations with modern nonsense :-)
@Tinkeringbell in Scotland we do celebrate Yule or Jul.

@RoryAlsop That's a very, very dangerous one :P I might get burned for witchcraft if I mention that :P

I usually go with I don't believe in your god so why would I respect their religious holidays

@Tinkeringbell lol

@RoryAlsop That's pagan christmas, right?

A J
Currently most viral video in India. This girl got over 600k followers in one day.

2:08 PM
@Magisch demand they respect your religious holidays. And then put on a colander :-)
@Tinkeringbell pretty much - winter solstice

@RoryAlsop I did buy that 20$ certificate so I'm technically a priest

@RoryAlsop That makes me think of Wednesdays... we eat pasta every Wednesday.. :/

it was to make a point to a religion teacher, but still

@RoryAlsop Yay, I am starting to remember :P I always mixed up winter and summer solstice ;)

@Tinkeringbell one is cold
;-)

2:09 PM
@RoryAlsop Lemme guess, the other one is rainy? :P

@Tinkeringbell in Scotland, they can both be rainy :-)

A J
Watcha discussin'?

Sid
@AJ conversation shifted from Bajrang Dal to religious vs commercial holidays. :P

@RoryAlsop See, I am starting to get better but I'm not there yet ;)

A J
@RoryAlsop Here they can both be dry. :P

2:20 PM
@AJ well, theoretically here one is snowy and one is sunny. But in reality one is dark and wet and cold and the other may be sunny. If you're lucky.

JAD
@RoryAlsop one is dark and wet, other is light and wet

A J
Lol

2:44 PM
good morning :)

@EmC Hello! good afternoon :)

@Tinkeringbell I wish it were afternoon here already :P

@EmC That bad of a Monday? :P

@Tinkeringbell just slow, and I have things I'm excited to do after work :D

@EmC Cool ;) Anything so fun that you're willing to share what you're going to do?
Day has been slow here too, but we had impromptu gymnastics in the MFR because the heat is off :/

2:48 PM
@Tinkeringbell sewing a dress :) I got maybe halfway done yesterday and I'm itching to finish it
oh, that sucks :(

@EmC Oh nice! :) For a special occasion? What kind of dress?
@EmC The gymnastics were fun for like 25 minutes... but then you're sweaty and you cool down even faster :/
Ah well, 10 minutes to go and I can start packing :D
Then I can go home quickly and decide whether I'm going to crochet another square or work on the ravelry profile some more :)

@Tinkeringbell strapless and twirly :D I'm going to visit my boyfriend this weekend so I guess that's the occasion ;)
hooray ravelry :)

@EmC Sounds like a perfect dress for that! :) Does the weather lend itself to wearing dresses over there? ;)
@EmC Yeah well... Maybe I should never have started it :P I spent the entire day yesterday putting the stash in there :)

@Tinkeringbell lol not at all right now :P it's quite impractical but I had this fabric.. soo...

@EmC Ahh... I do know that.. I have this yarn, and I really need to make XYZ :P

2:52 PM
@Tinkeringbell exactly! sometimes you just want to make pretty things :)

@EmC Yeah... but there's too many pretty things in this world :P
Oh, that reminds me:

@EmC is envious of the creativity

@Ash ^

all I can do is math and more math and different math

@Magisch hey, math can be pretty too :P

A J
2:55 PM
@EmC good evening :)

thats a cool carpet

@Tinkeringbell Ooohhhh, is that the thing you've been working on?
And, hi everyone! :-D

@Tinkeringbell aw, images aren't loading for me :( I'll have to check later

Sid
@Magisch Math is beautiful.

@TheTinyMan Yes, those are the squares from week 3 ;)
@EmC Please do :)
@Magisch Hahaha :P They're nowhere near big enough for a carpet :) But thanks :)
@EmC Agreed, especially if all those numbers and stuff are written down to align beautifully :)

This one also got 1 reopen vote already
it's bad even for a "Should I ... ?" question

@AnneDaunted True ;) But I'm on a strike, I won't comment or vote anything for a while :) I might have been overdoing it lately so... let other people figure it out. Once there's a certain rhythm going I'll chime in again.

4:05 PM
@Tinkeringbell "let other people figure it out." optimist

Actually means "Let the entire site die a horrible death"

@Catija I wasn't that overbearing :P
I'm sure it'll survive without me ;)
Don't worry, if it gets to the point where stuff needs to be resuscitated, I might step in as well ;)

@Catija /submits a bunch of "should I" and gratuitious-sex questions

But right now, I'm curious to see what will stay open and for how long if I don't start the commenting/close-voting... and people seem to be doing well ;)

@Tinkeringbell That "Should I ... ?" question stayed open long enough to get two answers.

4:09 PM
@AnneDaunted Yeah... well, that's a community problem, not a 'lack-of-Tink-around-here' problem :P

This was directed at your "and people seem to be doing well" comment

@AnneDaunted Oh... that was a tad sarcastic ;) I also secretly enjoyed the struggle here: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/10394/…
That one took a lot of restraint to not step in ;) BUT people did it anyway, so from there to 3 hours is an improvement ;)

@Catija Reminds me of your funny post, that sadly cannot be upvoted anymore.
@Tinkeringbell That was posted around the time everyone in the US is asleep

@AnneDaunted So there's only US people here, and me? :P

4:20 PM
There's also another version of that, that has to do with Golden Rules (philosophy). I don't have the exact quote/term around, because the book is at home..

But the principle is that people can profit from other people living by a Golden Rule, and if enough people abuse the other people living by a Golden Rule, in the end no-one cares for it any more/it becomes impossible to keep living up to that rule
Like, if the rule is 'If you have more food than someone else that is hungry, you share your food'... This works fine if there's someone willing to share your food with you when you're hungry, but if you're only ever sharing food and no-one ever shares with you, in the end you're the one that ends up either hungry or unwilling to share because that will mean you end up hungry

That's why you just stand there while evil triumphs?

@AnneDaunted That's why I'm trying to see if the good people do something
Because I'm not the only good person around here

The benevolent Goddess testing her sheep? ;-)

In fact, my eagerness to close stuff and have it perfectly written might have been keeping people away...
@AnneDaunted Just trying to find other gods, I'm getting lonely :P

Which people did you supposedly keep away?

4:25 PM
I might have overdone it here, as 2 comments suggest: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/10383/1599

@Abigail, that's not the point of the question. OP is referring to letting people know they can speak like proper adults when talking about technical terms, without going through the usual nanny-like discourse that tech support has to provide to non-techies. For instance, it happened to me with Amazon support. The speaker told me exactly where to touch in order to clear the cache of the Android Amazon App Store. Given that I work as an app developer the guy could have just said "please clear the cache". No need to go through "tap here, then here, now you should see this, tap that"... — Andrea Lazzarotto 2 mins ago
