The way the current Spectre attack works is it does a bunch of jumps in one process to mistrain the branch predictor, so that it speculatively runs the wrong code in a different process. If that wasn't possible, that specific attack wouldn't work

Yeah, if I understand right branches followed by memory accesses that depend on values used on the branch are basically the primary attack surface for Spectre

And actually, it looks like this isn't just a cross-process thing. There's a similar attack that interpreted code can perform against an interpreter, which is what the JavaScript attack does

Fixing each of these attacks will probably be a real pain, but I don't think that we currently have good reason to say that any potential fixes will be incompatible with modern processor optimizations

anyways I'm sure you can disable speculative loading in firmware but since it'll make things slow as liquified compost it's of dubious merit

One option is to serialize speculative loads, including permission checks, for any single speculative execution path. It's bad, but you have more than nothing

My son bought minecraft for his xbox one on a disc. I have also bought minecraft but i purchased digitally. I have the servers option to play all the games ie; cake wars ect. However he doesnt. He has a gold membership (thought maybe an update would be needed) any ideas Thanks
