6:00 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Oh, yeah, I've played that one too. Wait, it had a Neutral? I thought it was just Lawful and Chaotic.

@TheTinyMan I will start my first D&D session in just a week. I'm very excited since it will be geared toward beginners!

@Vylix That's awesome! D&D is a great time if you've got a good group! :-D

@apaul no, a good troll would fly a floater to see if he could slip under the radar, establish himself as a legitimate user, then start trolling. It's what I would do, at least.

I don't see anything wrong with the post. SE doesn't like linking to pornographic material/sites or including such images. This post does neither of things. This site is about interpersonal skills and prohibition of this segment of our topic makes us less of a site. This post did a good job of being pretty neutral and minimizing the non-PG subjectmatter.

I miss the good old days of Dragon magazine....

6:02 PM
@TheTinyMan I'm kinda overwhelmed by all the rules, so I'll test the water first if it's a good fit to me. I'm always enticed by D&D but afraid of the complexity of the rules...

@Vylix It can be complicated! Which edition are you playing, 5th?
@TheSnarkKnight Were the "good old days" before they started introducing homebrew rules with absolutely no concept of balance? xD

@TheTinyMan 5.5 if I'm not mistaken

@TheSnarkKnight I respect your experience, but it seems like all posts could be suspicious in that light.

@Vylix I know of a 3.5, and a 5.0, but...is there a 5.5? A quick Google search doesn't turn anything up in the first few hits.

@TheTinyMan The "Barbarian" threw game balance out the door

6:03 PM
@TheTinyMan and thank you for reminding me to register to that event :) I forgot to register there :P

@apaul all posts are suspect. Assume good intentions, but watch for patterns

@TheSnarkKnight Are we talking early edition splatbooks (/ Dragon Magazine xD ) or 3.x+'s Barbarian?

@TheTinyMan the first one to hit the books was a game breaker. It was a one-man army.
Didn't it have hit dice of d-12?

Odd how role-play in some contexts is so socially acceptable... Am I the only one seeing a humorous parallel?

then, of course, there was the dual-class cheat. Run a fighter up to level five, then dual-class as a mage. You'd climb back up quickly and not be squishy, ever

6:06 PM
@TheSnarkKnight So we're talking 3.x? 'Cause yeah, it does there, because it has shit armor next to other high HD and in-your-face characters.

@apaul :D

@TheSnarkKnight Oh, you're talking 2nd Edition
@apaul Nope, I noticed that from the beginning too xD

@apaul I don't talk about my NSFW role-play.

@Catija I think the specific topic is going to set a lot of people off
expect lots of "how can you not instantly permaban this person" comments and posts to come up

@Magisch agreed. It's going to bait bad behavior.
@TheTinyMan I forget when the Barbarian got introduced. Just that it could heal, it had bad initial AC, but then things didn't tend to live too long when near a barbarian. Then when the magic resistance kicked in.... Plus, he wasn't allowed to associate with mages at lower levels which also made it kind of unplayable

6:11 PM
@Magisch that's... completely outside the SE policy. I'll definitely watch it but unless the CMs tell me otherwise, I'm not going to remove the question.

@TheSnarkKnight Oh, that doesn't even resemble the 3.0 Barbarian. I don't remember the Barbarian (or whatever it was called) in the 2e Complete Fighter's Handbook being that onerous though but it's been a loooong time...

@Catija I just mean this post is going to require intense moderation in any case
Maybe we can handle it with lots of careful watching and prompt flagging

@TheTinyMan I stopped playing after "unearthed arcana" was released.
Making the Paladin a sub-class of the Cavalier annoyed me.

@Catija can you purge the comment chain underneath discussind my edit? I've reverted it now so it is pointless

@TheSnarkKnight Which edition was this one? I don't remember Paladin being a sub-class of anything since OD&D, where it was kind of an earned sub-class of "Fighter" that you could get at 9th level. That's not d20 Modern is it?

6:14 PM
And it might keep the meta-discussion in comments going

I'm on mobile at lunch.

ahh okay

@TheTinyMan it was a sub class of fighter, then "cavalier" became a class, and Paladin became a sub-class of that. They had ludicrous restrictions, such as not being able to use "peasant" weapons.
God, how did my memory become so loaded with useless things.

@TheSnarkKnight Now ours is, too

@TheSnarkKnight Ahhh, I see. So that's 1st Edition. Man, I didn't know that D&D has always had the splatbook problem.

6:19 PM
@AnneDaunted the hazards of being blessed/cursed with an eidetic memory

@TheSnarkKnight I play a paladin at a LARP these days. xD I wear all white and keep a giant bucket outside my cavern to wash my clothes if they're ever not perfectly white, which happens a lot when I get knocked unconscious in a fight. xD

@TheTinyMan A paladin can be a great munchkin character. Oh, how you can abuse the system! LOL
SORRY it's the LAW

@TheSnarkKnight Urgh, characters like that are why people hate the paladin class. >.< shakes his fist

@TheTinyMan This may shock you, but when I was younger, I was obnoxious.

@TheSnarkKnight Hey, I understand that not everyone sees the need to change as they get older, it's cool. ;-)

6:23 PM
@TheTinyMan I changed, I got worse

@TheSnarkKnight Once again, your snark bests me. xD

@TheTinyMan it comes from having worked retail. I was very good at double entendre as well. One of my favorites was "If I were you, I'd feel the same way" (If I were a jackass, that is) Another was "I promise you, I will give your concerns all the attention they deserve"
or "I want you to let you know just how important your concerns are to me" (I want to, but I'd get fired)

@TheSnarkKnight Haha, those are always fun :-D

6:39 PM
@TheTinyMan Dilbert.com used to have the "Employee review generator" which was nothing but double entendres
"Mr smith has never been caught sleeping on the job. Many of his coworkers have been willing to talk about his work. Mr Smith personifies the importance of good hiring practices and the possibility of hiring more people like him should be discussed immediately"

@TheSnarkKnight They changed that in 3.5, I believe. I like Pathfinder and I'm starting to get into 5e.

@TheSnarkKnight Hahaha, that's glorious. xD
@JohnP Yeah, most of the concerns that he's listed have been gone for decades.

@TheTinyMan I started with the original box set. I still have a couple of the dice from that one. :)

@TheTinyMan I've been gone for decades too.
I think SO's have been the bane of D&D for decades

@JohnP Good times! :-D It's come a long way. Freaking THAC0... How are you liking 5e? I've heard only good things!

6:45 PM
I took a long break though, I didn't play from AD&D until 3.5, and then I was spoiled because my GM was a guy that wrote rulebooks and systems for Iron Crown (ICE).

@Magisch Done

@TheTinyMan I remember when THAC0 was first introduced

@TheSnarkKnight Psh. If my SO can't join me in some RP, then I've got the wrong SO! ;-) But that's probably easier to say in my generation than in yours.

@TheTinyMan 5e is pretty good. I think it balances everything pretty well, I haven't come across anything too overpowered. One of hte things I like is they are taking some stuff out of the rules and handing more interpretation/power back to the GM

@TheSnarkKnight I was such a snob at the time that 3.0 was released, that I read through it, and literally the first thing I said to someone about it was, "They replaced THAC0 with this Attack Bonus crap...now anyone, no matter how dumb, can play D&D!" I was so angry my neckbeard never even managed to grow in.

6:46 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Heh. To put it in context, I remember when the Gazebo story was new. :)

@TheTinyMan in my day, gamer girls were harder to find than a virgin in a cathouse. Everytime someone got a girlfriend, the party dropped by one member

@JohnP Super exciting. :-) I'm starting in a new game soon and the GM was trying to decide between Pathfinder and 5e...I voted for 5e but he thought it sounded more rules-intensive. I've...played neither, but that doesn't fit what I'd heard. xD
@TheSnarkKnight Yep. The times, they have a-changed, and for the better. :-)

@TheTinyMan Pathfinder is basically open source 3.5
I really like it as a system, actually.

@JohnP With some key balance fixes I hear. 3.5 is open source, at least a lot of it is.
d20srd.org...versus pfd20srd.org for Pathfinder. :-p
And 3.5 is sooooo rules-intensive!

@TheTinyMan Yeah, but you can really put together some very funky stuff with 3rd party content.

6:49 PM
@JohnP Yup. Divine Metamagic shenanigans and stuff.

We got into Rifts, which is fun
Champions too.

@TheSnarkKnight I haven't played either of those

@TheTinyMan That is where a good GM can make the difference. A bad GM (Of which I am one) can't create a counterbalance.
@TheSnarkKnight Oh, man, I loved the original Champions!
@TheTinyMan Champions is D&D using superheroes.

@JohnP A mediocre-or-better GM can also say, "hey, bro, what you're doing doesn't fit mechanically with the rest of the game, optimize less and don't rely on broken combinations"
@JohnP Ahhhhh

@JohnP I imitate voices, so I would do a different voice for each villain

6:50 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I do two voices. Pinky and Marvin the Martian.
Neither of them really...fit...

@JohnP I can do pinky, marvin, brain, cookie monster, Yoda, Grover, James Earl Jones, Christopher Walkin, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, James Mason, Peter Faulk, Sean Connery..... and about 100 more
I was a good GM
:D

/me bows in much respect

Oh, the days before Caller ID.... the mischief I wrought.

Our current GM is pretty decent. My former one wrote rulebooks for Rolemaster. He was amazing.
I'm trying, but I don't do it well so I find it intimidating.

Best compile time error ever: when Visual Studio somehow forgets what the "object" class is and gripes that all of these classes are trying to inherit from this unknown "object" thing that probably doesn't even have a default constructor xD
Also it forgot what 'void' meant

7:00 PM
@TheTinyMan did some VBA work. code worked in one module, EXACT SAME CODE blew up in another. SOLUTION: Copy code to notepad++, delete module, create new module, paste code to new module.

@TheSnarkKnight I have literally had to do that in VBA, also xD
And in Visual Studio, but I at least now know what happened there to mess up the generated files

@TheTinyMan the first time I had to do it, the whole group was trying to figure it out. I also learned that sometimes a recompile does the trick

@TheSnarkKnight Yep. Also sometimes an IDE reload.

What concerns me much more than that interest in furries is that you use Bing. — Anne Daunted 1 hour ago
@AnneDaunted Good way to diffuse tensions :P
Btw, I've just read up on it. Seems I missed all the fun! :/

@Tinkeringbell That joke was something else that I'm not supposed to upvote, wasn't it? xD

7:05 PM
@TheTinyMan In this case, I'll leave it. I think it's needed, even if it were just to diffuse tension.... But yeah, I mentioned before I'm not a big fan of comment jokes since they might have the unmeant side effect of hurting an OP....
This one is good though :D

That title should still be changed to something that isn't going to trigger sniffers.

@TheSnarkKnight How? I'm open to suggestions but I also want people to be aware that the question they're clicking on is about porn.

@Catija change it to "adult entertainment" instead of pr0n

@TheSnarkKnight You can say porn... unless you're on a network with a sniffer :P

No. That could be any sort of things. It could be a strip club, for example.

7:08 PM
it's the p0rn0gr@phic reference
I think the furry reference would make it clear
there aren't any furry st1p clubs that I am aware of
and if after that act they were still furry, we're talking about something else.

Magisch linked to this thing question that I'm not sure how to properly link to yet:
https://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/313332/keep-nsfw-questions-out-of-hot-questions-list
Wherein the accepted answer was a good one, there's some kind of private list that someone who's not me has access to that includes banned terms that prevent a question from showing up on certain places in the website, that something might get added to. We're concerned about specific keywords, right?

I don't think that there's anything wrong with the question title as is.

@Catija NSFW, and just showing up on the list page, it WILL trigger sniffers. I am in IT and I can state that as FACT

I would argue that a sniffer that catches the word "pornography" will also catch a whole, whole lot of other false positives.

The word "pornography" IS NOT NSFW.

7:12 PM
@Catija yes, it is NSFW, and it WILL trigger sniffers.
2

No. It's not.

Just curious, since I know mods have their own chatroom.... Have such things ever been discussed there?
I've given a CEO a tour of this site *this afternoon*. If the question had been around at that time, that would have been a LOT more awkward.....
Then again, I agree that no matter how awkward the topic, it should be discussable....

"NSFW" is a subjective term. Some sniffers will balk at the word "game." Is there a SE standard that can be agreed to?

@Tinkeringbell Why would you give your CEO a tour of IPS?

@Catija I had a tab open, he saw that I had rep :P So he asked if I was on SO, and I had to admit to being on a site about softskills. He was interested, apparently developers and softskills are a rare combination. So I showed him some questions so he could see what the site was about...

7:14 PM
Not answering for her, but, it's a cool demonstration of leadership and of continuous self-improvement!

We have a pretty young and cool CEO, despite being a pretty huge company
But like I said, such a question would have made things awkward, but not impossible....
So I don't know which side of NSFW to pick... It might be a good idea to ask a community mod/other mods right away? I can imagine that they're a lot less impressed if someone else flags them in.....

@Catija sniffers are absolutely triggered by keywords, the one you insist on posting would have triggered mine several times already if I weren't in IT.

@Tinkeringbell The general mod consensus is that the question is fine as is... if we want to find a better way to word the title, that's ok, but my concern there is that the users may click into something they they aren't prepared for, particularly from the HNQ.

I dunno.... but @Catija if you're just speaking for yourself .... there might be people that disagree.... I'm not doubting your knowledge of SE or something... but I think it would be nice to hear more people state the same... just like multiple upvotes on meta make a better consensus. ;)
@Catija Than, I'm not going to nag further. Leave it as is.

@Tinkeringbell There are 15 deleted comments, several from mods saying what I've been saying in here.

7:19 PM
@Catija I missed that ;) I was having a drink with the CEO :P
I agree then, leave it as is.

> There was never anything offensive here; the OP took care to use perfectly civil and non-taboo words. While I could understand removing the specific words from the title, removing all mention from the question is excessive. Even more importantly, your edit has rendered existing answers obsolete. This is not a valid edit. – terdon 1 hour ago

and change the topic again, I shouldn't have brought it up again ;)
How's the weather?

disabling HNQ, getting out of here so I don't have to block another alert.

So @Tinkeringbell, do you play tabletop RPGs?

@TheTinyMan I've read something about those, I'm still debating whether or not I have enough fantasy in me to try once ;)

7:20 PM
@Tinkeringbell Your name is "Tinkeringbell!" :o Are you not fantasy-ful at all?

@TheTinyMan I like Disney, and tinkering. But I generally don't have enough imagination to come up with my own stories....

@Tinkeringbell Although, there are also sci-fi RPGs, if that's what you meant. xD

Just like I pick my projects from the internet and not make them up myself
@TheTinyMan Nah... I'm doubting whether I can get into the role-playing part enough, or if I would just be me :P

@Tinkeringbell That's fair. The most difficult creativity tasks are usually on the part of the game-runner.
@Tinkeringbell Ahhhh, I see. Yeah, role-playing itself is not for everyone.
looks around Man, we had a pretty good discussion of RPGs going on a few minutes ago xD

@TheTinyMan Yeah.... I'm sorry for party pooping that one :D
And I'm not much of a person to talk RPG's with ;)

7:23 PM
@Tinkeringbell I think it was a good discussion to conclude, though. And I'm not blaming you, I'm just sad that the other people who were talking about it aren't talking now. xD Although I guess I get why @TheSnarkKnight isn't.
Actually, about that weather!
I got to my van this morning and the inside of the windshield was covered in frost! >.< What the heck!

@TheTinyMan Time for a lifehack :P to get the moisture out of your van ;)
Maybe a bag of rice will do the trick... Don't leave it there until it rots though!

@Tinkeringbell But the tears of my passengers will re-moisturize it any time I have any! D:

@TheTinyMan Please don't tell me you drive that reckless? I hate reckless drivers :P

I don't drive recklessly, but people think I do. :-P
Which probably means "I drive recklessly but am in denial. ^.^

@TheTinyMan Exactly :P

7:28 PM
@Tinkeringbell It's funny though, because if I'm in someone else's passenger seat, I'm always so nervous, because I drive so much further behind the car in front of me than other people usually do.

@TheTinyMan Hmmm....
Weird :P I just had a co-worker drive me yesterday, to a meeting. (he was going there too). He drove really recklessly, switching lanes where is wasn't allowed... almost hitting another car. i'm not going to accept his invitations again :P

@Tinkeringbell I do drive faster than many, though, and I don't slow as much for turns as some people do.
@Tinkeringbell Oh, no, I don't switch lanes where it's not allowed unless I'm behind a tractor or something and I don't see a passing segment in view and can see ahead for a a kilometer.

@TheTinyMan Hahaha :) That's something I can live with I guess ;)

@Tinkeringbell Now, what really seems to make people nervous is the fact that I have my phone out 80% of the time that I'm driving. :-P

@TheTinyMan Bad! :D
Gotta run, almost at the station...

7:32 PM
(and I either hold it above the steering wheel in front of the windshield or have it in its mount in front of the windshield)
All right, have a good evening!
