12:13 AM
@Kit did you get things figured out?

I think I got it to work fairly well. But even as I write that, I realize that it's not going to work properly.
I'll have to change it back to table style on Monday.

Ah, so it is a div now then?
We get Monday off as a day-in-lieu.

Q: Need help finding source of quote

SomeKittens Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the universe is winning - Rich Cook I'm completely at a loss for the source of this quote. Google and Google ...

Kill with fire, yeah?
Gotta run, bye.

1:16 AM
Hi! Bye! Wow, it's quiet in here. I'm just popping in to say I'm sorry I haven't had much time for y'all, but nothing untoward has occurred. It's just that my office is moving and we're getting new work computers and I'm trying to move my apartment all at the same time. Whew.

@aediaλ smooch

And my better half and I are making good progress on tonight's project to drink the opened alcohol that cannot be moved. Woohoo! But I'm out of packing tape so I have to use the last one that has peace signs.
@KitFox Hey you're here!
I thought everyone left for the night.

Yeah, I've been lying in wait for some prey. pounce

Oh, @Vit, I hope your back is okay. I tried to catch up on transcript and saw you hurt yourself. Feel better!
@KitFox giggles

Are you moving to a bigger place?

It's good with limes. Or at least that's how we were told to make it. Limes, muddled, sugar, cachaca, ice.

Oh, like a mojito?

Caipirinha () is Brazil's national cocktail, made with cachaça () (sugar cane rum), sugar (preferably white powdered sugar, or any other sugar, even honey) and lime. Cachaça is Brazil's most common distilled alcoholic beverage (also known as Pinga or Caninha). Both rum and cachaça are made from sugarcane-derived products. Specifically with cachaça, the alcohol results from the fermentation of sugarcane juice that is afterwards distilled. Popularity The caipirinha is the national cocktail of Brazil, and is enjoyed in restaurants, bars, and many households throughout the country. Once al...

Sounds delish.

1:24 AM
Like a mojito except no mint. Do mojitos have mint? Or am I thinking of something else?

I will be out with my gf for her bday tomorrow. Maybe I will have one of those.
Hmm. Juleps have mint. Do mojitos? Probably.

I don't buy mixed drinks when I'm out much; we tend to frequent places that have beers I haven't tried.

Yeah. We are going to a beerhouse, so really I will probably whoop it up with one beer.
A stout, porter, or maybe...
Hmm. What's the one I had last time that I liked?

I'm a sucker for IPA :)

I like most beer.
So are you excited for moving?

1:30 AM
Other than the actual moving process, yes.

Bigger place?
But your roomba!? Do they take pets?

We are trying to buy a place, but in the meantime will be staying with my parents. It's a little complicated.
giggles

But...aren't your parents far away in another state?

She'll have to sleep. I have to dig out the instructions, actually; I think I'm supposed to take out her battery.
Yes.

That will make your commute a lot longer.

1:33 AM
We're trying to move near them. In a bit I will be able to work from home.

Sweet.
It will be good to be near them.

I just have to help my entire office move first. I got rid of 99% of my own junk, but apparently everyone else's junk just can't be thrown in the shredder bin so easily...
I really miss my parents and relatives and friends, yeah.

Are they moving to your parent's house too?
And are your husband's parents nearby too?

Haha.
Offices are consolidating down here, but more people are going on a part-time telecommute basis.
My husband's parents eventually will be.

Yeah, gas is over $4 a gallon here now. I am thinking of asking my boss about telecommuting.

1:35 AM
They are in the process of selling their current home so they can move for his dad's job, but it looks like they finally will be able to and will be back in the northeast too.

That's great! What good timing!

It's like $4.10 here. Maybe a few cents less depending on the spot.

Anyway, I've got to go to bed. Enjoy the booze, you boozy unicorn wench!
And Happy Eostre!

@KitFox Oh I will!
I hope I pack all the eggs and bunnies in the right baskets...
Happy Passover too!

Oh yes! Make sure you celebrate properly. wink wink

A: Does "the same number of people" behave as singular or plural?

RegDwight Ѭſ道commented: -1 for the time being because it's unnecessarily confusing. The key is probably the last sentence of your edit, but it's kind of buried under the rest. The bit about less vs. fewer in particular is irrelevant (and wrong to boot). The two example sentences about cats do not match the structure of OP's sentence and are not explained but rather left as an exercise to the reader ("Which sounds right? Good luck."). In short, I'd mercilessly remove everything except for the last sentence, and then flesh that bit out, and only that bit.

That should be enough for today. CU all tomorrow.

2:50 AM
@RegDwightѬſ道 You're supposed to be going and here I see you editing questions even moar betterz something! Get some sleep, owlyphant :D
It must be terribly late there. It is nigh time for me to be thinking about finishing up for the night here.
Sleep well y'all!

@RegDwightѬſ道 Good night!

@aediaλ Good night!

@Robusto The shower curtain exists for the killer to hide in the thriller movies.

3:35 AM
Holla!

Hi!

How are you today!

Is that a question or a statement.

Okay I did my best to hide it, but I'm not entirely super sober.

Haha, I'm sort of here.
@Cerberus Ha.

3:36 AM
Where are you then?

Oh, at my friend's house. I'll be playing video games soon.

Cool. Which games?

Call of Duty, mostly.

By the way, I helped someone stay monogamous.
Hmm I didn't know you liked shooting games.
(Too much information, I know.)

@Cerberus Ah, good.
@Cerberus Ehh, they're okay.
They get boring after a while.

3:39 AM
Hmm.

Oh, the round is starting.

I occasionally liked shooting. But.
OK have fun!
I will support you mentally!

Thanks!

You will win.
Trust me.

You can't.
It's zombies.
Survival.

3:41 AM
Hmm.
Now I'm sad.

Aww.
Poor drunk Cerb.

's OK.
I'm fine, had a fun night.

Ah, good.

So is this friend from the advanced class thing, or someone else?

Well, he's in the class, but I knew him before.

3:47 AM
Ah OK.
So are you bringing your own computer?
Or do you take turns?

Brought my own.

Cool.
Wireless LAN party?
I don't know how these things work, never done it.

Nope.
It's on a PS3.

Ohh...

Yeah.

3:51 AM
ponders the complicated aspects of modern multiplaying

2 hours later…
5:36 AM
@Cerberus Heh, that was a long game.
Well, it was four.
I wasn't playing for one of them, I was Tyranting.

5:48 AM
@Mahnax Oh haha.
Why not?
Not that I mind...

@Cerberus Why not what?
I'm bored of FPS.

Why weren't you playing for one of them?
@Mahnax No comment.

@Cerberus Heh.
@Cerberus I was bored.
And there were others who wanted to play.

OK.
Next time, play Civilization!
Although it might take a tad longer.

Hmm, meh.
Le Tyrant is good.

5:51 AM
Good.
Have them play that, then.

One of them does.
He's part of the raid.

Good!

The other two aren't interested.

You know how slowly people from this room trickled in...
Reg and I started playing at about the same time.

Is Reg over level 100?

5:54 AM
Then Mr Disappointment and Mr Hen joined a while after that, but they never caught up.
Then it took months for Vitaly to join, I think.

Oh, interesting.
Hi @Jin, hi @HansQualityPhotography.

Then many months after that, Rob and Kit joined. I think Kit was first.

Jin
@Mahnax hello

Hi.
Nice website you made here.

I never knew about Mr. D and Mr. H.

5:55 AM
It is you who did it, isn't it?

Jin
@Cerberus thank you, but I didn't design our English site. I commissioned another designer to do it.

I thought it was balpha. Maybe I'm confused.

'Ello.

@Mahnax Well, they never were very enthusiastic. Not as much so as the others.

Or tired.
@Gigili Hi!

Jin
5:56 AM
@Mahnax oh balpha did the chat room skin

@Jin Ah OK. Nice commissioning you did there, then.
Hi Gigi.

@Jin Oh, good then, I wasn't totally wrong.

Jin
@Cerberus retinart.net is the designer who did it.
he has a really great design blog there.

Ah yes, that style does look familiar!

Jin
@Cerberus yep. his site's previous design was even more "grungy" or "vintage." I really liked that style, and I thought it'd fit the English.se theme. That's why I hired him.
Now I wonder what I'll do for our French/German/ sites..

5:58 AM
Ah, you have hiring power. Want to sign me on as an intern? Eh? Eh?

@Jin Something similar in a different colour?

Jin
@Cerberus I honestly don't know yet. I normally don't start the design until a week or two before the site launches.

Hmm understandable.

2 mins ago, by Mahnax
Ah, you have hiring power. Want to sign me on as an intern? Eh? Eh?
Haha.

Jin
it's always a fine balance between making the design relatable and welcoming and making it overly themed so it ends up being cheesy..

6:01 AM
Just make the German one yellow, red, and black. Easy.

One thing that has always seemed like a candidate for improvement: the colour that marks the OP of a question doesn't stand out from the background a whole lot (I use a GM script to increase the contrast).
It doesn't bother me personally because I use this script.

Jin
@Cerberus i can fix that.
picking colors is always tricky. i test the colors i choose using a color blind testing program. also i have 4 monitors that are set to different gamma 'n contrast

@Jin Hmm I actually don't know whether other people feel the same way.
Haha, that sounds thorough.

@Cerberus It doesn't bother me.

Right.

Jin
6:03 AM
but even then, people with older or newer monitors may still see differently than me.

My monitor is from 2009 or 2010, 24" LG.
Oh, well.

Whoa, 24".

@Cerberus The contrast is fine for me, but then my screen's calibrated.

That's not particularly large, nowadays!

Jin
@Vitaly i wish everyone calibrate their monitors...

6:06 AM
@Vitaly I have probably set it to a relatively low contrast. But everything else is clear enough.
Actually I seem to remember that it was similarly unclear on my parents' monitor.
Oh, well.
I'm fine with my GM script.

@Cerberus Mine is 13.3".

@Gigili Awww...
That means that the area of my screen is 3.3 times as large.
Are you on a laptop?

Uhum.
Haven't used PC for a long time, about 8 years.

Why not?

Because I can't bring them to bed?
Because I can use it on my lap, maybe.

6:13 AM
I use both.
A desktop is usually superior in everything but portability, so I use it whenever portability isn't an issue.

I don't need both.

What did you say? I can't hear you, because the distance from your line to the other side of my screen is too great.
I only heard a faint whisper.

Haha.

Oh, what is that I hear?
A splash?
Don't tell me you've thrown coffee on your keyboard and wrecked your laptop...

Actually, you've missed something important.

6:16 AM
Oh?

All of my messages include one point minimum.
I am awesome like that.

Then your points are thin like needle points...

Thin or fat, they're all noteworthy.

And sharp.

And sharp, yes.

6:20 AM
Like a thistle.

Well, I'm outta here. Bye!

Bye!

Bye!
I think I just heard a voice in my head saying I should change my avatar.

Oh no...

1 hour later…
7:51 AM
@Vitaly Actually, to me, гендиректор sounds like someone who performs sex change operations; but maybe that's my NZ accent.

2 hours later…

Q: Colorful words for editor

ashBlue-penciler is about the most colorful word I can come up with to describe an editor of some sort. Are there any more? Archaic ones are fine. I've already considered copyholder, copyreader, deskman, newspaperman, newspaperwoman, proofreader, reviser, rewrite man, rewrite woman and rewriter.

@JasperLoy this is actually a good question at heart.
I'm not sure we had a question about that, but we certainly had a comment exchange somewhere.
Native speakers actually do use "went" in certain situations where "gone" would be proper.

@RegDwightѬſ道 But the register is very lowbrow. Downright redneck, in fact.

Aye.
But that's what would go in the answer.

1:11 PM
> We should of went to the picture show, but we was too drunk.

10
Q: Why is the incorrect phrase "should have went" so widely used?

AdelRarely do we hear "should have gone" in common speech. Some background: My father immigrated to the US in the late 60s. He learned English first overseas, British English. Then he studied extensively in America. He always corrected me and my brothers on us saying "you/I/they should have went"....

Actually we do have a question on that.

@JasperLoy It was clear the way I edited it, you've done nothing.

user19161
@Gigili Oh did I not give you two points? Are you upset?

user19161
It is not clear because there is an unwanted "from" so the sentence did not make sense.

Two points can't make me happy.

user19161
Read carefully before correcting me. :-)

Reading carefully is my second job, you've changed nothing.

@Gigili I have changed a sentence which did not make sense.

Okay. Enjoy yourself.

4:02 PM
Hi.

2 hours later…
5:34 PM
This is an interesting campaign about prostitution.
It is in the red-light district here, maybe 100 metres from my house.
The end of the video says it all.

2 hours later…
7:41 PM
@Cerberus Wow.
That is a surprisingly effective way to get that message across.
I've done a bit of research about these things and currently, there are about 30 million people enslaved (sex, manual labour, et al.) around the world.
Hello @Animadvert.

@Mahnax Yeah it's sad.
The thing is, outlawing prostitution would not help at all.

@Cerberus I've been involved with fundraising for such things.

That's why we have these women prostituting themselves to tourist families.
@Mahnax Oh, what for exactly?

@Cerberus My team raised $1500 for a charity that uses 95% of incoming funds for freeing slaves last year.
Unfortunately, I'm not able to participate this year, but possibly next.

@Mahnax Oh, freeing slaves? How does that work?
By keeping prostitution legal, we can have some idea of what's going on and we can do more to help these women.

7:51 PM
@Cerberus Well, they focus mostly on Asian countries at the moment, and they cannot reveal their methods exactly (for fear of being found out by the enslavers) but it costs around $400 to free one person.
@Cerberus True.
It's very sad that so many women from poorer parts of Europe are tricked into prostitution.

@Mahnax The United States needs more help on that topic, seriously.
And Europe even.

@Gigili Meh.
The slavery does occur a lot everywhere.
Not so much in Canada, but still a bit.

I don't think we have this issue in my country.

Iran, was it?
I think Meysam is from Iran, but I can't remember exactly where you're from, @Gigi.

I am, umm, from, umm ...
@Mahnax Meh.

7:57 PM
@Mahnax Hmm mysterious...

@Cerberus 'Tis.
They have been thoroughly verified as legitimate, though.

@Mahnax Yeah, well, it's poor women everywhere. Most here are from Eastern Europe, Latin America, and some from Africa and Asia.

@Cerberus Oh, there are lots from Asia.
Poor parts of India, especially.
IIRC.

@Gigili This issue is thousands of years old. I bet you have it too. I have never heard of a country without pimps.
@Mahnax In Europe, you mean?

@Cerberus You bet? You do?

7:59 PM
@Cerberus No, just in general.
