Q: How to uninvite a friend from a regular gathering?

MaxMy small group of friends regularly meets once a year to catch up and hang out. We have a long history together and are geographically scattered these days so it's a big deal to get together like this. In the past we've occasionally had other friends join in the gathering and it's always a little...

Q: how to ask for calls and deal with my SO's reluctance to calling?

SomeoneElseI'm in a Long-distance relationship with my girl Alice, we often text everyday from the moment she wakes up till I sleep (time difference, not constantly we have work,school etc.). We do send voice messages and videos occasionally. However, when I suggest a voice or video call, she gets very shy ...

7:20 AM
pretty quiet here

A J
yeah

@AJ Hey, I can't be 2 places at once :P

@Tinkeringbell you're just not trying hard enough

@JarkoDubbeldam Yeah right :P

7:36 AM
try harder :P

I'm digressing :/
My own personal Waterloo

@Jolenealaska Oh... bad day again?

Better, I think

@Termatinator Working on it ;-) Just finished a meta answer, so hopefully I can now be just chatting :)
@Jolenealaska Sounds good :)
What happened?

7:52 AM
Well, I'm more sure that I'm not nuts, but also more sure that I really do have more issues than I realized recognizing human faces.
Not pets though. I remember pets and can pick them out of lineups years later.
And, I crack myself up on a fairly regular basis.

@Jolenealaska Good thing that you're not nuts ;) I can only imagine how bad it must be to be completely unable to recognize human faces.... I struggle with the name-face connection myself sometimes, but I can always at least recognize the face as a familiar one and I've gotten pretty good at talking without needing a name :P
@Jolenealaska Have you had many pets? Or are you talking other peoples pets?
(Maybe you could recognize people by their pets :P They say dogs look like their owners :P)
@Jolenealaska What's life without fun ;-) If you know a good joke, feel free to share :)

I feel I've shared quite enough of myself of late :)

@Jolenealaska Hmmm ;) Okay. Change of topic then? :P
How's the weather over there?

Yes, we (Scot and I) had 9 dogs, 2 guinea pigs, a cat, tons of gerbils and a baby squirrel in a townhouse

(I'm sorry, that really is my only small-talk sentence)

7:57 AM
Clear and cool
A little cold today, but not bad

@Jolenealaska Cool :) I had a parakeet, my eldest brother had a guinea pig and the youngest a rabbit.... now, all three of us are pushing for a dog or snake
@Jolenealaska Same here... little cold. Overcast. But at least the rain stopped after 2 days.

I enjoy snakes and once had a Savanna Monitor named Mr Lizard

@Jolenealaska oooh
I have a Ball Python and a Boa Constrictor

@Jolenealaska I held one once at the zoo.... that was a small boa constrictor.... It was cute :) Personally, I prefer the dog though, they are a bit more active. I need something I can take on walks ;)
@JarkoDubbeldam Nice :-)
Do they have names?

@JarkoDubbeldam Yeah, she escaped from the enclosure I had built for her in -no joke- the house we rented from the famous lady on the park strip with a pet reindeer.

A J
8:01 AM
@Tinkeringbell I am at 4 places right now. Why can't you be? :P

@Tinkeringbell The BP I've had for 7 years now (age 9), but I was too slow naming him, so the family just started calling him snaky
Which kinda stuck

@Jolenealaska I had to look up what a Savanna Monitor was, because I thought Mr Lizard a weird name for a snake ;-) Those are cool as well... Do they require a lot of 'maintenance'?

BC is a baby born this spring, called 'Snor'

I took the lizard on walks. That was where we first met Sarah Palin. I was living full time with Marijana activists at the time.

@AJ Because it's 'gezellig' here ;-)
I like it here, we're talking, it's fun.
The screening room is awfully quiet now ;-)

8:03 AM
@Tinkeringbell Nope, but they need warmth most of all. And mice

and cleaning shit every... 3 weeks

yep :)
She bit me once while I dangled a frozen mouse for her

@Jolenealaska Sounds pretty simple ;) If they need warmth, I think there's not much of a window to take them on walks here.... It's not warm enough here for them outside often enough I think
@JarkoDubbeldam Sounds better than a rabbit or guinea pig.....

A J
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, it does usually around this time.

We had to clean up the rabbit's shit every other day..

8:04 AM
Reason she's callled snor (moustache) is because almost all Boas have a black marking on their upper lip

@JarkoDubbeldam .Ah.... cute :)

Yeah, reptiles are really low maintenance. Feed them once every 1-2 weeks, make sure water bowl is full and check for shit every now and again
Like that

I enjoyed a giant boa in a job I had in Pheonix when I lived for a short time with my mother there.
yep
I forget the boa's name I liked so much. The dog across the way that I like so much is named Phoenix
And the aussie is named Penny, which is also a name that makes sense in all this weirdness

@Jolenealaska Like the city or the mythical bird?? I would laugh my ass off if people started naming their dogs after Dutch places :P 'Volendam, heel!'

@Tinkeringbell Phoenix is a city
in the state Arizona
(iirc)

8:09 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam Never been good at geography, fixed that.... I got the Volendam part right then :P

Also a mythical bird

You could perfectly name a snake Sneek though... (place in the Netherlands, pronounced the same as snake :P )

@Tinkeringbell Imagine calling your dog Katwijk

Mom had a very cool house in Sedona Az, that I never actually saw

@Tinkeringbell Ah, damn, was looking for examples
@Tinkeringbell Or Wolvega

8:10 AM
stop it guys!

@Jolenealaska Must be weird to....
My parents have always lived in the same house....
Brb, have to leave this train and take a bus ;-)

I knew it

My parents have lived a lot of places when they were studying

Yeah
Where can I go now to get a code sent to my phone so I can order a pizza?
I'm hungry for Sicily's Pizza
probably a throwback to when I worked the overnight shift and could only order from them

@Tinkeringbell ^^
Was back when we just got her, back in June

8:22 AM
My boa was muuuuuuuch bigger :)
And my lizard

Shes like 2.5 ft now

@JarkoDubbeldam she’s cuuute :D
@Jolenealaska No idea... I never ordered pizza but try their website? Sounds like the logical choice
@Jolenealaska how big is much bigger?

Yeah, I did that. And called. That place is so sketchy they act like they don't know him. That's crap.

@Tinkeringbell Boa constrictors have many many subspecies, with quite a range of lengths they grow to

The snake? 5' maybe? The lizard was 4' maybe.

8:28 AM
@Jolenealaska 5' isn't much for a BC
Mine's subspecies will grow to like 8'

@JarkoDubbeldam don’t they just keep growing?

Long time ago, so memory may be iffy. 5' is 1.5m

they do
but they slow down a lot once they reach their adult size

That BC used to climb through my hair
I walked the lizard on a special leash
She bit me once accidentally

@Jolenealaska Medusa:P

8:30 AM
Lizards are not super bright
I smelled like food

@Tinkeringbell My ball python has been pretty steady at 1.4m for as long as I can remember
Might be he's grown like 5cm in 7 years
but he's not a really good eater, so that might be a cause

@Jolenealaska what did you do? Roll around in a bath of dead mice? :P

@Tinkeringbell Having had food in your hand will make your hand smell like food

@JarkoDubbeldam thought snakes will eat once hungry?

@Tinkeringbell No, I drowned mice in a bucket for her :(

8:33 AM
in some cases that's enough to trigger a feeding response

And dangled them dead in front of her nose

@Jolenealaska that doesn’t sound like a nice job

@Tinkeringbell eh, from their nature, they are oppurtunists, which means they'll eat whenever they get the chance to. They might not get that chance another month after all.

Well, it wasn't super easy, I've raised a lot of rodents as pets too

However, Ball pythons are typically very picky eaters
At times, I get a feeling he's juist rightout scared of the food

8:34 AM
so, drowning mice I had raised was ummm, difficult
So anyway guys, I wiped.

@Jolenealaska yeah figures...

And my bedroom is torn up, and I need sleep

@Jolenealaska pffft :) sleep well then !

@JarkoDubbeldam because of this, it is also very much possible to overfeed them. Then you have an obese snake

so I'll be back in 7-8 hours or so

8:36 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam fatten m up before Christmas :P

I'll be clearer too

@Jolenealaska see ya. !

gnight

Goodnight
Are snakes edible anyway?
I might post that on Pets?
Or outdoors;)

8:38 AM
Maybe better cooking on Cooking
answer is yes
If you're careful, you could even eat venomous snakes
definitely if you steer clear of the head

Ugh this bus is too full... somebody keeps nearly pushing my bag of my lap
@JarkoDubbeldam I think I’ll wait until after the apocalypse to try that

@Tinkeringbell Do you know the difference between poison and venom?
It's funny, because that distinction isn't made in Dutch: gif.

@JarkoDubbeldam between poisonous and venomous yes...
Yeah things are just giftig

@Tinkeringbell So technically, you could eat a venom gland, if you have no wounds in your GI-tract
But I wouldn't recommend it

@JarkoDubbeldam I don’t think that’s how it works
@JarkoDubbeldam don’t worry I won’t try it :P

8:44 AM
Venom needs to get in the bloodstream to do its work
Ingesting it would destroy the venom when it passes the stomach

9:02 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam Hmmm.... I still wouldn't risk it :P

me neither

Q: How to handle weird farewell situation

1 hour later…
11:18 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam poison is man-made and venom not?

@Termatinator poison is what kills you when you eat it..
venomous is what kills you when it eats you :P

@Tinkeringbell and if you touch it?

@Termatinator if you don't lick your fingers.... :P

i mean is it poison or venom when it kills you if you touch it

@Termatinator I'm looking it up :P
But in some sense, since it has to permeate skin and get into your bloodstream, I'd say venomous
@JarkoDubbeldam is the expert on these things btw :P
(that's probably why you asked him in the first place :P)

11:25 AM
found the answer!

a nettle is venomous ;-)
Tell me :)

11:41 AM
Poison is bad if ingested, venom isn't

@Tinkeringbell nettles - a bit tingly. Venomous always sounds much worse than nettles :-)

Nettle's leaves are covered in tiny needles
which inject venom

@JarkoDubbeldam I know - it's just such a low level that it doesn't feel like it is enough to be venomous :-)

Well, you feeling nettles is exactly what causes the venom :p
but I get what you mean

snakes or jellyfish that kill you - obviously venomous, but nettles - "a little bit ouchy"
you are correct, but y'know

11:44 AM
hogweed is much more painfull than nettles

@RoryAlsop There are also ouchy venomous snakes

@JarkoDubbeldam lol

Also, there are some species of snakes that are actually poisonous

also do you know what is the most deadly animal on the planet (except humans)?

@Termatinator it's going to be something tiny - like malaria, surely

11:50 AM
it's the mosquito

mosquitos don't kill anyone - but they do tend to introduce malaria to folks

@RoryAlsop true, but that means they are deadly because they are spreading it

@RoryAlsop Malaria isn't an animal iirc
@RoryAlsop That's like saying guns don't kill anyone, they tend to introduce bullets to folks
(solving america's gun problem in one fell swoop: just ban ammo)

I am someone who agrees with the second amendment of the USA, people can defend themselves because of it
but it is true that crazy people can get a gun easier, so (after a second thought) I'm neutral

@JarkoDubbeldam define 'animal'
Noun: animal (plural animals)
  1. In scientific usage, a multicellular organism that is usually mobile, whose cells are not encased in a rigid cell wall (distinguishing it from plants and fungi) and which derives energy solely from the consumption of other organisms (distinguishing it from plants).
  2. In non-scientific usage, any member of the kingdom Animalia other than a human.
  3. In non-scientific usage, any land-living vertebrate (i.e. not birds, fishes, insects etc.).
  4. (figuratively) A person who behaves wildly; a bestial, brutal, brutish, cruel, or inhuman person.
  5. (informal) A person of a particular type.
(2 more not shown…)

12:05 PM
Animals are pretty well defined

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease affecting humans and other animals caused by parasitic protozoans (a group of single-celled microorganisms) belonging to the Plasmodium type. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, tiredness, vomiting, and headaches. In severe cases it can cause yellow skin, seizures, coma, or death. Symptoms usually begin ten to fifteen days after being bitten. If not properly treated, people may have recurrences of the disease months later. In those who have recently survived an infection, reinfection usually causes milder symptoms. This partia...

Exact phylogenetic definition of animals is on the top right side of the wikipedia article of animalia

Now that we're talking animals: I just read the newsarticle... the guy that sang 'The lions sleeps tonight' died :(

In the jungle, the mighty jungle

awooooo!

12:14 PM
@Mithrandir > multicellular organism
Malaria parasites are monocellular

@Tinkeringbell frightened them all of, did I? I tend to do that. Especially with regards to children, small animals, and some household appliances

@TheSnarkKnight You scared away your vacuum cleaner?

@JarkoDubbeldam yes, I found the poor thing in the closet, huddling, terrified.

@TheSnarkKnight I heard the ceiling fan hanged itself

@JarkoDubbeldam you don't even want to know about the toaster oven.

Q: How to judge if somebody need advise or just a shoulder to cry on?

Luisa W. Sc.Background I've had this friend for a while, whom I'd describe as a "very close stranger". Since we live kinda far apart from each other and have absolutely no common acquaintances etc., it's easy to share all sorts of things with each other. I know all about her weird quirks, secrets, family, ...

3:03 PM
Hi baby! The answer is - both?
Yay! My state money came through, so I can order pizza from Sicily's

@Jolenealaska Enjoy!
@TheSnarkKnight hah ;-) don't overestimate yourself :-P

3:47 PM
@Tinkeringbell it's hard to do that, as the bar is set so high ;)

Btw @Magisch I wanted to this this morning but of course completely forgot: Good luck on your CoC exam, and let us know how it went!
@TheSnarkKnight Hahaha ;-) I just survived meeting my new manager for the first time... And more good news: I'll probably be travelling first class soon :D

4:26 PM
Ooh, first class! Nice! (Also, morning, everyone! xD )

@Tinkeringbell I think I passed it just fine
but yeah it's done now

@Magisch Good :) Time to relax :)

@Tinkeringbell word
I spent weeks obsessing over the project report and the exam

Hey, Stranger :D @Magisch :D

@Magisch When will you know for sure if you passed?

4:31 PM
at the earliest 23.12.2017
after that I'll still need to give and pass a presentation and interview exam

@Magisch Ugh... so if you're unlucky you won't even know during Christmas our new years eve

I don't think I failed it
@Catija A stranger?
:D

I haven't seen you here in at least a day or two :P

I kind of called that

Guten Tag @Magisch

4:41 PM
hello snark

I'm sure you passed :D
you're smart

in The Screening Room, 21 mins ago, by Catija
Also, @Tinkeringbell, what are you doing out of the Awkward Silence ??? ;)
Apparently I'm not allowed to roam free? :(

Back under the stairs with you!

@TheTinyMan Feels like it... @Catija hasn't spoken a word in there since she noticed me.... Hope I'm not ruining the fun there for her :)

Aww, surely she was joking around!

@TheTinyMan She better be :P (Btw, remember that comment we talked about yesterday? The one saying 'get drunk')?

@Tinkeringbell I do, did someone delete it for you? :-)

5:01 PM
@TheTinyMan Told you you could flag it as 'no longer needed' :P

@Tinkeringbell But it was fuuuuuuunny! xD Do funny comments not add to a discussion?

@TheTinyMan Told ya, we don't want a discussion here :P
So don't go making funny comments, I'll be mercilessly flagging them :P

@Tinkeringbell Willpower, don't fail me now...I guess that can be something chat is for but then it enriches the lives of waaaay fewer people! xD
/me contemplates finding that answer through his browser history or something then re-posting it just to troll @Tinkeringbell

@TheTinyMan Also, it's kind of stupid to make fun of an OP for asking an honest question :)
@TheTinyMan That will get deleted for not containing an IPS solution ;-) We want IPS solutions, not lifehacks :P

@Tinkeringbell That's entirely fair. I didn't take it as making fun of you, but if it had that effect it's definitely unconstructive.

5:06 PM
@TheTinyMan Hey, I can handle a joke (and I do not mind getting tipsy sometimes :P) ... But yeah, an OP might react like that especially if the problem is a bit more 'serious' and that's not good...

@Tinkeringbell Haha, alcohol abuse as a lifehack! But yeah, I'm sorry if anything that I was saying about it seemed like it was also invalidating you or your question, I just didn't flag it because, A, it had more upvotes than everything I've ever posted combined, and B, it was teh funnehs. ^.^,
@Tinkeringbell I'll definitely try to keep that in mind. Thanks for the advice and the perspective!

@TheTinyMan Nah.... you didn't invalidate anything... just trying to prove to you that you don't have to be that afraid to press a button :P

Yes... joking. :P

@Tinkeringbell I'm TERRIFIED to press buttons! :o Buttons are scary!

It's always fun to see people in places you don't expect them... like seeing your professor at a strip club... great fun.
<--- doesn't go to strip clubs...

5:07 PM
@Catija Uhmm... do I wanna know? :P

No, I was trying to be silly.

@TheTinyMan There's a legitimate name for that.... lemme look it up :P

(let me know if this is a not-okay topic) I definitely ran into someone I knew from school at a play party once
Annnnd I'm 85% certain that when I was in 5th grade, I found the person who would be my 6th grade math teacher on, uh, let's say a website that I shouldn't have been on at that age.

Which one? top or bottom? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_party

@TheTinyMan I hate witnessing alcohol abuse. last night, I saw a video of a cop taking someone's beer and pouring it out. It is terrible to see alcohol abused in such a fashion

5:09 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Abuse of alcohol and power, all in one! :o See also: drinking problems, where you're too uncoordinated to drink successfully. Incidentally, I myself drink almost not at all.

@TheTinyMan if that's your only vice, then we will still accept you
hmmmmm, didn't think I'd see play parties mentioned here.

@TheSnarkKnight Yep, clearly I'm perfect in every way! ;-)

@Tinkeringbell phrasing ;)

@apaul That may have been a tiny bit deliberately :P

@TheSnarkKnight Yeah, hence why I'm not sure if it's an appropriate topic here. Everything I've seen on Stack Exchange has seemed pretty, uh, clean

5:11 PM
@TheTinyMan Oh, Lord, it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way

(Does it need trashing?)

Oh, @Tinkeringbell, sorry, bottom.

@TheTinyMan Okay, than I won't ask the details :P
(and I'd rather you would not provide em spontaneously :P )

@TheTinyMan don't be a SAS

@Tinkeringbell I'll try not to. :-)

5:12 PM
Buh dum tiss

@TheSnarkKnight A what? O.O (Incidentally, those are my initials. O.O )

Sexual Anecdote Sharer? :P
Just guessing, no idea :P

Smart @ss Sub

@TheSnarkKnight Can I flag this as offensive?

You can say ass I think.... we all have one after all....
(hopefully)

5:13 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Ahh. I have one of those. :-P

@JarkoDubbeldam Please don't?

I think we've all just let the collective cat out of the bag now, haven't we?

@JarkoDubbeldam, was that sarcasm or are you actually offended?

@TheSnarkKnight It worked ;(

Yeah... I think we might want to tone it down just a little ;-)

5:15 PM
Soooo, how about those <insert favorite sports team here>

Sorry.
So apparently, there is a place in my city
that hosts axe-throwing competitions

@TheTinyMan just kidding though

@JarkoDubbeldam the lovely thing about having my own flavor of Asperger's syndrome is all I have to do to offend is to drop my filters.

Oh, I'm glad about, thanks for the clarification, @JarkoDubbeldam! :-)

none of y'all want to know what REALLY goes on in myhead
Someone once said "You're out of your mind" I said "Of course I am, it's dark and scary in there"

5:17 PM
I tried to get in there as best as I could yesterday! xD
@TheSnarkKnight Kind of like hearing, "you're out of your cell?"

That reminds me, I need to send a get well card to my psychiatrist. Poor guy had a breakdown

@TheSnarkKnight Heh, that's like a busdriver taking the bus

Wiser people than I have said that people go into psychology to fix their own problems, only to learn that you can't self-treat...and then they have what has to be one of the most mentally straining vocations in the world.

@TheTinyMan yup

Man, I can ruin jokes like nobody's business

5:21 PM
@TheTinyMan too true, though. When I was in school, we always used to joke that the psych majors were going into the field because they were in desperate need of the help themselves. I of course avoided it, as I knew I was beyond help

I thought about going into that field if programming didn't pan out for me, which it absolutely did, but...man, I'm glad that I didn't. Growth is such a slow process and I can't imagine having to live with failures and regressions.

Regression: DEFINITION := SEE: REGRESSION

@TheSnarkKnight Huh, here I thought that was the definition for "Recursion."

@TheTinyMan yes, but to understand recursion you must first understand recursion.

I am failing at coming up with a clever and original rejoinder. xD
I blame all this work

@apaul, can I make a meta about that question of yours that got closed? Apart from adding a location tag, I'm not seeing much comments there that haven't already been addressed I think..

Which question?

@Catija The thanksgiving & family one...
that popped up in my reopen queue I think?
If I remember correctly I pressed Skip (dang, now I'm not sure).

You can still vote to reopen manually on the question itself.

7:46 PM
@Catija Yeah... but I don't really want to do that without knowing what's wrong... I hate it when people do that to me..
Woow... 5 blue balls and counting, something is exploding..

Can you open the link?

@Catija No.... it's too slow and complaining about timeouts
But as far as I can see, somebody already shouted to stop the flagging in there.

What is happening over at the spanish chat

There's something wrong with chat.

there is like 15 chat flags
What is happening over at the spanish chat

7:52 PM
Did someone put the entire chat in timeout or what???? :P
@Catija Yeah... the flags are exploding... I wish my Spanish was better, so I could actually help out here
Oh... I'm getting through again.

@Magisch it must be Chilean Spanish :D
@Magisch it must be Chilean Spanish :D
@Tinkeringbell I'm having the same problem
@Tinkeringbell I'm having the same problem
I don't know why everything is posting twice

(can people flag things if the room is in timeout?)
Must be those flags? As long as I don't try to load em, everything goes sorta fine
otherwise I'm going to shout at that mod in there that they should do so :P
@Catija opening the flags from the screening room seemed to work better.

Yeah... I think there's something wrong with one of the flagged posts.

I'm not seeing anymore flags, seems they got it under control again.

@Tinkeringbell BTW, the old joke about Chile is "How can you tell if a Chilean is angry? ANSWER: He stops cursing".
Flags cleared and chat is working again

7:56 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Let's move on then... any weather updates? :P

UGH! No, but there is this storm brewing

@Tinkeringbell Feel free? I don't really understand why people voted to close that one.
