My philosophy is "focus on the solution, not the problem".
Father just dwells on the problem.
I'll talk to mom about this a bit more. Thanks for helping :-)

Hello, anyone know about getting special characters in a PuTTY terminal? I'm trying to get ▌to print

@bwDraco No problem. But please read the book :)

12:18 AM
@bwDraco lol no. It does let me leave the house without panic attacks tho, which is a plus.

morn

Hi!

12:39 AM
@Bob kpartx found the partitions, but now I get a superblock error when attempting to mount the main Mac partition.
Haven't had a chance to look into that one yet though.
This is quite an interesting experience though.

le sigh
Another day, another security breach.
That was 2012; my Disqus account was created in 2015 so probably not affected.
> [...] at the end of 2012 we changed our password hashing algorithm from SHA1 to bcrypt.

1:44 AM
Goddamn Vivendi hostile takeover. As someone with a significant interest in Ubisoft's flagship Assassin's Creed franchise, I seriously hope they can stop this.
It's bad for Ubisoft, it's bad for its customers, it's bad for the industry.
Worst of all, it's bad for its shareholders.
Vivendi has a history of ruining the game companies it's acquired in the past, taking down commercially successful franchises with it.

1 hour later…
3:01 AM
That's... unexpected.
BRB while I reboot the machine.
Generally, I try to take updates ASAP, but not sure why I wasn't notified about this in the first place or whether I somehow missed the message.
Normally, Windows gives you a toast when an update is about to be installed, not an urgent screen overlay message.
That said, you can delay installing updates for up to a week, but lots of people don't know how to do so.

Something's not right with the Dragon. It sometimes hangs when I close the lid, and I cannot find any information on what's causing it.
Left it alone for a few minutes. Noticed the fan revved up and the system immediately turned off when I push the power button. In other words, Stop error.
I'm going to see if the machine dumped core.

@BenN, any hints? I'm trying to diagnose a crash on entering sleep mode.

I don't know very much about BSOD diagnosis, sorry :(
The extent of my experience there is "hey, this device BSODs my machine, I should remove it; yup, that worked"

5:23 AM
This is interesting...
Composing a question right now.
...and I think my laptop's wireless NIC is failing.
Once in a while, the Wi-Fi stops working when I wake the system up from sleep and I have to turn it off and back on.
0
Q: Windows 10 intermittently crashes while entering sleep mode—network driver issue or hardware failure?

bwDracoI've been having problems with my Windows 10 (version 1703) system seemingly locking up once in a while entering sleep mode. The machine turns off most hardware, but the disk activity indicator still flashes a bit. After a few minutes, the CPU fan revs up and the system powers off with one press ...

The fact that the crash is in pci.sys, which is part of Windows, and not netwbw02.sys, points to a low-level problem outside the network adapter driver proper. This suggests that the driver is not at fault.

5:54 AM
this gets stranger and stranger

Bob
@bwDraco It doesn't suggest anything.
Just by the very nature of how drivers work, they can cause memory corruption more or less anywhere in the kernel.
A buggy driver can make any part of the kernel crash. It doesn't even necessarily appear on the callstack.
@JourneymanGeek ...why is it still ongoing o.O

@Bob cause ... I donno.
finding the body is important I guess?
and this is like some episode of I donno Sherlock or something

Bob
@bwDraco Taht said, all you really can do is update/downgrade the driver, or replace the hardware and hope for the best.
The issue with waking up from sleep is a known issue for Intel 7xxx adapters
So that's probably not related to the crashes.
Speaking of, is it even repeatable?

Intermittent. The problem only began about one week ago.
...along with the Wi-Fi issues on resume.
Also, I don't want to replace any hardware on this machine at all, because Astaroth.
I'm not keen on spending thirty-odd dollars on a network adapter when this laptop is going to be retired within the next few months.

Bob
6:13 AM
:\
could always disable it and get a cheapo usb adapter

Yeah, was thinking of doing that.

you can ger a basic, good enough one for 2-3 dollars

tbh, the not very compact thing is a feature not a bug

lol

6:14 AM
;p
(better antennae, easier to find in a messy desk.)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ya, but for a laptop...

Bob

@Bob LOL

@Bob Problem is, this laptop's USB hardware hates high speed transfers and disconnects at the slightest bit of EMI when moving data at USB 3.0 speeds.
Now, Wi-Fi runs within the USB 2.0 limits 99% of the time but this might limit me to 802.11n.

Did I seriously just link a WikiHow article as a solution to a tech issue?

@rahuldottech yes

@rahuldottech You don't trust them much?

@Boris_yo TL;DR - Reconnect to network
@Boris_yo Nah, it's just not really a tech place
Love the site tho
@Bob What's the point tho, with crappy key travel?

6:52 AM
@rahuldottech It has "Community Tested" badge. Must be trustworthy.

@Boris_yo Oh, it is
wikiHow just isn't your traditional tech site

@rahuldottech There is reconnect to router.

@Boris_yo huh?
Switch Wifi on and off
Or replug cable
Should do it

Did all of this. Problem returns after a while...

@djsmiley2k why?
@Boris_yo reset router

7:13 AM
@rahuldottech Disconnected LAN cable, powered off router and ISP modem. Powered them back on and reconnected cable.

7:34 AM
@Boris_yo did it work?

Bob

8:30 AM
High guys. Is there a way to know if my headphone jack is slowly getting destroyed? Thanks.

everything is slowly getting destroyed. Enthropy will have us all!

Bob
are you slowly destroying it?

I think my headphone jack is now loose. When I plug my headphones in and out, it came off very easily. So I tried plugging the headphones in and out a few times. Then one time when I plugged the headphones out I felt something, like my headphone is going to be stuck but it still came out. I plugged in and out a few more times. And suddenly while plugging in no sound is present. I plugged it out and plugged it in again and the sound returned and all is fine again.
The reason I'm asking is that I am not sure if there is already something wrong with my headphone jack or just my OCD playing with me. But is it currently working fine without problems. But I don't have a sure way to check my headphone jack to see if it is already broken.

8:49 AM
When in doubt, its probably COD.

Bob
I's suggest just using it normally. If it breaks, it breaks and you need to replace it anyway.
Spending time and effort "finding out" if it's broken will likely ... break it.
you could shine a torch in there and make sure there's nothing stuck inside

@JourneymanGeek The whole thing is weird, but i figure that as a journalist she asked him something, or threatened to say something he didn't like
the rest is kinda clear

@djsmiley2k eh. That she's dead? Yeah, that his story holds less water than a submarine made of collanders? yeah. Other than that...

@JourneymanGeek what's COD?

@morbidCode OCD spelled alphabetically, as it should be

8:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek that he kiled her.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek or a type of fish

@djsmiley2k that is looking likely
but why? and what the hell was with the whole, really bad, attempts at hiding the evidence? Was it premeditated or a crime of passion?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek or a dumbass thinking they won't find out
anything's possible

@Bob Shining a torch would not work. I am blind. Is it fine to use some small object like a toothpick to feel what's inside?

Bob
maybe someone read one too many crime fiction stories
@morbidCode I would suggest asking a friend to check for you.

8:57 AM
@morbidCode USUALLY head phone jacks themselves are robust
the soldering can fail
on the other hands, headphones ...

@JourneymanGeek But is it normal for the headphones to come in and out of the headphone jack very easily?

er, yes?

@JourneymanGeek Oops I didn't know that. When this laptop is new it's very hard to pull the headphones out because it's too tight. A year later it's really easy, like I could just pull the headphones by the wire and it just came off quickly. Seems I'm worriing over nothing?

yup. But DO NOT EVER PULL HEADPHONES BY THE WIRE
Hold the plug and pull it out.
NOT THE WIRE. NEVER THE WIRE.

I've killed one headphone jack
and maybe 100 pairs of headphones
I think in 30 or so years on this earth

9:12 AM
lol
Funny thing is, its not implausible to make difficult to break plugs
just do em full metal, and with integral strain relief throughout the cable
(or design jacks with simple, replacable inserts)

@JourneymanGeek so is this just normal ware and tear of the headphone jack and nothing to worry about? And one last question, this one time that I plugged the headphones in and no sound came until I replugged the headphone and the sound comes back, is there a probable reason why it happened this one time? I cannot reproduce the no sound problem no matter how many times I plug and unplug the headphones.

> Third, Apple’s CPUs are big and in this game, big means expensive. According to a 2016 report by the Linley Group, the Hurricane cores in the Apple A10 are “about twice the size of other high-end mobile CPUs”. Even the smaller Zephyr cores are much larger than their low-power counterparts, “nearly twice as large as Cortex-A53.” The key here is that Apple sells smartphones, not chips. As a result, it can afford to make the SoCs more expensive and recoup the money in other places, including the final retail price.
Basically why Apple processors are so much faster than Qualcomm

@morbidCode probably

Its a useful way to gauge demand for a product.
WHHHYYYY?

@JourneymanGeek TL;DR: You expect higher quality from multi-billion dollar companies than a couple of college dudes sitting in a garage. When these people do crowdfunding, either they're held to low standards, or the startups are held to inappropriately high standards
They do not need the funds from crowdfunding - They can gauge demands in different ways

10:31 AM
eh. Most of my crowdfunding stuff's from slightly more established places
soooooo eh. I clearly disagree

@JourneymanGeek eh

I do think the badge engineering part's disingnious tho

10:57 AM
@rahuldottech eh?
@rahuldottech ah ok
lets go right back to the start
if you think crowdfunding is a way to support a company, and possibly get a product out of it, then yes big companies shouldn't be doing it
but it isn't that anymore

user226528
Hey, superexperts.

user226528
Question for your expertise.

user226528
Someone has hidden contents that I am looking for in his computer. Where should I look?

hmm
That depends on the person

user226528
By the way, I have administrative password and unlimited physical access

user226528
11:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek Okay. Where would you hide them?

user226528
Let's assume he or she has the same personality as you.

hmm. encrypted partition or container, with a innocent name
probably inside a media folder
(lots of small files)

user226528
Thought of the first one myself.

even if you find an encrypted container, you need to decrypt it

user226528
Well, the question of decryption is moot for now because ISOBuster and RStudio found nothing.

user226528
11:18 AM
I thought perhaps it is hidden among the backups; perhaps a TruCrypt or VHD with BitLocker, renamed to look like a backup file. It can be pretty big or pretty small too.

yup
heh hiding it in a backup is clever

user226528
But I run verification.

user226528
No go. Every single file has a plausible explanation.

user226528
Included in the catalog, content accessible, and everything.

user226528
I have the backup password too.

user226528
11:20 AM
Even the sizes are correct, so it is not possible to have appended it to a bona fide file.

what sorta backup?

user226528
SuperEasy 1-Click Backup, AOMEI Backupper Pro, Acronis

user226528
1CB is out of business, but its backups are VMDK. Reverse incremental. It is pretty clever stuff.

you could mount those backups and add files

user226528
Yeah.

user226528
11:26 AM
And they have a catalog and checksum too.

user226528
So, I will know.

user226528
And besides file system journal is active. I will know whether the file is changed since its creation, which must never happen to a backup.

user226528
Well, at least not an AOMEI and Acronis backup. 1CB backups all change after creation exactly once.

are you sure there's hidden files?

user226528
I am sure this computer has contents in it that must not be there. Whether there are files with hidden attribute or no, I don't know.

user226528
11:32 AM
I am using MultiHasher to create checksum of every file in the computer. I can then compare files that are not supposed to be specific to one computer, like OS files and tell with certainty if they have changed.

user226528
I am taking no chances too: SHA-256 all the way.

user226528
What is Scaramouche?

11:51 AM
will you do the fandango?

user226528
What?

user226528
That's a form of dance, right?

user226528
FOUND THEM! FOUND THEM!

user226528
I found the coveted contents.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Guess where I found them! You'll never guess.

user226528
11:57 AM
Or would you? I gave a clue above.

in the OS files somewhere?

user226528
No.

user226528
They were masquaraded as VDF files for a video game called Scaramouche: Last Night.

o_O

user226528
The game even has Steam DLLs. But it is not a Steam game.

12:00 PM
btrw this is what I was talking about :D
@FleetCommand is this a job, or some challenge?

user226528
Job

and they hid stuff in a GAME?

user226528
Yeah. I thought the game was too old and had too little contents to have such large VDF files.

user226528
Then, I noticed their dates don't match the dates of the other game files.

user226528
The game runs without Steam installed. The Steam DLLs are for distraction.

12:03 PM
they put a lot of work into this then

user226528
No. Why do you think that?

dropping steam dlls in and stuff?

user226528
Copy a couple of DLL, then copy your large file to the game folder, rename its extension to VDF. That's all.

user226528
Steam itself is installed in five minutes.

so do you have any idea what the content is?

user226528
12:14 PM
@djsmiley2k Yes. The VDF file was in fact a VHD file. No password or encryption.

user226528
But judging by what I am seeing right now, there should be other container files.

user226528
I'll find them.

user226528
Of course, the files are encrypted with EFS, but I am the domain recovery agent.

hah
Games count as media files? ;p

user226528
Technically, they count as apps. They are not sold among videos, ebooks and music.

user226528
12:40 PM
Hello, @bwDraco. We just finished a very technical discussion. We are ready to hear your woes about the video gaming industry now.

Hehe :)
Any progress on the Dragon?

@BenN It's the network adapter.

Physically dead?

10:04 PM
Sometimes glitches when the driver tells it to sleep especially with open connections.
My theory is that the adapter hard-locks when trying to sleep, triggering the BSOD.

Ah

It's not dead, but again...
