@Zenon Why not just use he?

@Jasper or them
Or 'that dude'
Yeah that one

@Mitch I don't really like the singular they, lol.

Well ... it. Might be more than one person?
Maybe you don't believe in uptalking?

I will make a confession.
I only knew about the singular they when I saw it on ELU.
I will never ever use it myself, lol.

I bet thinking you use it naturally enough when you're not aware.
I will make a confession myself
Half of every word I'm thinking is profanity

@Jasper Speaking about hypothetical persons here. I'm writing six pages comparing and contrasting psychological theories.
@Mitch I'll see if I can incorporate a "they" here or there.

Q: What is one word (noun) of a person who is initiative?

user260297One word for a person who is initiative enough?

@Jasper APA is weird on gender-neutrality. I've wanted to use "he" or "she" in a hypothetical sense, but my handy-dandy 300-page stylesheet doesn't say it's ok, so I need to assume it isn't.

Q: a word to describe: Who, What, Where, When

Vincent AdvocaatI'm looking for a word to describe: Who, What, Where, When. I'm using these words when something has changed and I need to keep track of who did it, when he did it, what he did and where he did it. Unfortunately I do not know if there is a word to describe this. I'm not looking for the 5 W's or...

Q: What is the equivalent term for 'mutiny' in a monarchy?

rednrytI am looking for a word that would mean to oppose or overthrow the ruler in a monarch (the king or queen) led by another member of the high ranking officials. I considered rebellion but this would have a connotation of a faction of rebels. In my case, the word should rather denote a conspiracy, o...

@Zenon Oh. If it is technical writing, it may actually make stylistic sense to be consistent and only choose a single word that you use throughout. It all depends.
@Zenon I don't think that's the right meta rule to use. It could easily be the case that anything they don't mention is OK.

@Feeds Who wants to bet the intended word is prolific?

Q: Does "nonstandard English" come across as judgmental?

aparente001In this comment about describing someone's hard to understand English as "nonstandard," an Academia SE participant wrote I had the same reaction against "nonstandard." It's not really a big deal, but I think it has a very slight moralizing overtone, since it associates "English I can understa...

@Tonepoet Have you sold your Paravia for a few thousand dollars? lol

Q: Word for "the guiding words that teacher says during training to help participants perform the exercise"?

wtn31For example, in Taiji, Yoga, etc., in a training class, during the training the teacher might say a series of words as guides for what the participants should do, such as "lift this body part up" "move this body part in this way" "close your eyes" etc. What's the word in English for this kind of...
