Q: Chaos is an ASCII ladder

Luis MendoYou know nothing The things I do for "Chaos is a ladder" is a memorable line from the television series Game of Thrones. The purpose of this challenge is to build a ladder from chaos, in ASCII art. The challenge Input Ladder width, W >= 3 (integer) Step height, H >= 2 (integer) Number of run...

Q: Milk, explosion

NobodyImagine boiling milk. It heats up. It heats well. It boils. Suddenly a fly passes by. It's gonna sit on the milk. You catch it. Milk explodes. Yeah. That's how milk works. So what? You have to simulate milk. When you look away, it halts. You have to throw an error. Not a proper return, but an...

@NewMainPosts Talk about polar opposites :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing Brb fixing my answer and then Jellying

@Mr.Xcoder Just change 32 to 33 in the randrange to fix it

@cairdcoinheringaahing Wait, space is 32?

3:08 PM
@Mr.Xcoder Yep

duh, thanks

CMC: Given a positive int array, increment the first one by 1, the second by 2, the third by 3, etc.

@Pavel Pyth, 5 bytes: .e+bh

C#, 39 bytes: a=>{var i=0;return a.Select(n=>n+++i)}

@Mr.Xcoder nice!

3:12 PM
@Pavel Jelly, 5 bytes: żJZ+/

Jelly, 2 bytes: +J

@LeakyNun What's that nice?

@Mr.Xcoder nothing, just a response

:o thanks then

I'll delete it if you don't want

3:12 PM
ಠ_ಠ Talk about showing how bad I am at golfing Jelly

@LeakyNun No, I'm fine ;-)

C#, 26 bytes: a=>a.Select((n,i)=>n+++i)

@LeakyNun I thought it was related to me using .e :P

n+i+1 is arguably more idiomatic but n+++i looks fancier.

true
I'll pass on this one
I'm on a friggin flip phone
on 2017

3:15 PM
The Google Pixel 2 is coming out in October, apparantly.

umm
I'll just wait till Pixel 5 :P

I just bought a phone like 3 weeks ago ;-;

I'm getting my pixel replaced for free cause it stopped charging correctly, but it's less than a year old

Me too, We just wait for pixel 5 (yay?)

Is it just being replaced to a Pixel 1 or upgraded to a Pixel 2?
All I want is for them to not have removed the headphone jack. Fuck Apple for doing that with the iPhone 7, now other companies are doing it too.

3:18 PM
meh, mine doesnt have an headphone jack either
at least samsung has an excuse

They do?

Its small
Like damn small

@Pavel Pixel 1

Like 3.4"

Isn't that about the same size as the iPhone 6?

3:20 PM
wow good roast
but its long
a useless physical keyboard
its a flip phone ya know

@NewMainPosts argh why the random characters.. That's gonna add ±20 bytes to SOGL :/

@cairdcoinheringaahing Ready for Jelly?

@dzaima That's why the random characters

@cairdcoinheringaahing oh obviously

3:29 PM
umm, the tetris guys actually did it

@EriktheOutgolfer Yep, about 8 hours ago. You (and me) are a little late on the scene :P

but can we run it?

FYI, StackExchange has no had over 40m messages in chat

@EriktheOutgolfer Did what?

@Pavel Working game of tetris in Conway's game of life

3:31 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing school

@EriktheOutgolfer same here

Anyone know C++ and would like to help making Math™?

I guess this has to be mass hacker media news
...for the interested :p

@EriktheOutgolfer It should be, but all that will happen is the message -> gets at max 20 stars
Oh, and 6 different users will rep cap almost instantly

umm, the answers total >500 upvotes

3:33 PM
are those users jon skeet on PPCG

@cairdcoinheringaahing s/will rep cap almost instantly/have already repcapped in less than an hour o_o/

@Nobody No, the QFT answerers

ik

Here comes one now :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing Seven, actually. The challenge poster also rep-capped.

3:34 PM
most of the challenge upvotes were there already?

@El'endiaStarman Is Joe still active?
@EriktheOutgolfer Nope, he got another 60 when the answers were posted

@EriktheOutgolfer Yeah, something like 260 total score?

He is because he accepted the answer

ooh? last time I checked I remember something like 170-something
the thing is, 6 votes of mine went to the answers...except that the cw answer doesn't really contribute rep :p

@EriktheOutgolfer Ever since I saw the github page for QFT, I've had the challenge open in a discrete tab, so not to miss the answer(s) being posted. Just my luck it happened while I was at school.

3:37 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer Oh, that's right. So it actually is six different users who've repcapped. JoeZ, Phi, me, KZhang, Mego, and muddyfish.

@El'endiaStarman poor conor o' brien pulled the short straw
:p
I guess he had the most rep right?

@El'endiaStarman lol you already lost about 1k because of repcap

@cairdcoinheringaahing The CW answer was marked Accepted

Way Joe came online to accept that

@Mr.Xcoder I know. ;_;

3:43 PM
Lol now you'll repcap forever

Realistically though, the repcap is a good idea in general. It prevents users from getting undue power because they got lucky with something super popular.

@El'endiaStarman Raises a difficult question. Which is more important, you getting 1k rep, or Jon Skeet having to work for 1m rep? :P

@Mr.Xcoder umm, no

@EriktheOutgolfer At least for the next couple of days

the repcap is for a specific day because usually voting trends fall down after a few hours
except that in this case those people solved a challenge not even dim could normally solve

3:46 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer is there a way to test if an item in a list is an integer or a string in Jelly?

@EriktheOutgolfer Not even dim solved that
@cairdcoinheringaahing Enough Jelly for today... I am tired

he asked me...not sure why that has to do with you being tired?

@Mr.Xcoder Ok, I'm going to keep trying :P
@EriktheOutgolfer No, we were doing some JHT

@EriktheOutgolfer I was telling caird that I want to stop the JHT, because Enough Jelly for today... I am tired. Really nothing to do with you.

I saw that but I just couldn't get how him being tired is related to you asking me a question about it :p
@cairdcoinheringaahing no :(
except that there are 5 "types" in jelly

3:49 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer I was thinking of checking if appears in the result of but it doesn't seem to work ಠ_ಠ

int, float, complex, char, list
@cairdcoinheringaahing because doesn't convert to a string representation
it only prints such a representation but returns the argument unchanged

@EriktheOutgolfer How do you get the Jelly representation of a value?

you may want to use instead

@EriktheOutgolfer @caird ಠ_ಠ Obviously

and it would only contain if it's a string
no other string representation will ever contain the char
btw can be a char of a string
but still it can only be part of a string

3:56 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer I have this and am trying to filter elements that aren't chars from the list

@cairdcoinheringaahing umm, is some code supposed to be in the "input" field? ;p

@EriktheOutgolfer No, that's where I store code that I may need, but aren't using

I'm trying a different approach now, so it doesn't matter too much, but it should be an interesting challenge.

the ladder?

4:01 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer No, its for a JHTCMC

in Jelly Hypertraining, 44 mins ago, by caird coinheringaahing
CMC: Given n, output the Jelly code page with each character repeated n times. But you cannot use x or in your code
this one?

CMC: given an even number above 4, decompose it into the sum of two primes

@EriktheOutgolfer Yep, that one

CMC: Complete any non-kolmogorov complexity challenge in BrainFlump

4:06 PM
I just hate it when some chat messages are invisible to me without a refresh...

@EriktheOutgolfer potato computer?

CMC: Build Conway's Game of Life in Tetris.

Jelly should have an integer partitions monad. Maybe Œṗ

@PhiNotPi is tetris turing-complete
@DJMcMayhem gettin' old :p

4:07 PM
Huh?

it has been requested many times already recently

Oh. I didn't know that
Might as well do it myself :P

@PhiNotPi nice meme

@PhiNotPi ಠ_ಠ
@DJMcMayhem Hehe, as Erik said, both caird and I asked for that in the Jelly chatroom, and Dennis told us that he doesn't work on Jelly rn... We shall go ahead and implement it ourselves.

I have dibs
I'm already working on it

4:11 PM
Me too

ಠ_ಠ

@PhiNotPi <insert link to a certain 7 posts> :P
What do I win? :D

@EriktheOutgolfer Probably not?

@cairdcoinheringaahing That's Tetris in GoL though. Phi is asking about GoL in Tetris.

4:13 PM
@El'endiaStarman Same difference :P (aka, I can't read)

@PhiNotPi well I'm not sure how to implement "turing-complete little stuff in non-turning-complete stuff that has...wait what it has a few outputs" and prove it's turing-complete

btw the message id exceeded 40000000!

@LeakyNun By 3k already!!! :)

This is message 40000000:

@El'endiaStarman nice, I was going to ask on meta (oh wait, you can actually find it out simply using URL tricks)

4:24 PM
@LeakyNun Bad Leaky! You are forbidden from FGITW'ing the next challenge posted to main

CMC: Given a positive integer N, return its integer partitions of length floor(N/2) (totally not biased)
@cairdcoinheringaahing huh?

Also, rick rolling is really old
@Mr.Xcoder Click the link he gives

@cairdcoinheringaahing I did

@Mr.Xcoder testcase?

@LeakyNun Give me a second
@cairdcoinheringaahing run this Pyke program

4:25 PM
@Mr.Xcoder He rickrolled, which isn't funny anymore.
@Mr.Xcoder Nah, I don't like Pyke

@cairdcoinheringaahing Try it!!!

@Mr.Xcoder I already know what its going to take me to

5 -> [[1, 4], [2, 3]] (cc @Leaky)
@cairdcoinheringaahing Nothing bad.

@Mr.Xcoder If I click it, will it take me to YouTube, with the rick roll playing?

@cairdcoinheringaahing Yes

4:27 PM
@Mr.Xcoder Pyth, 9 bytes: fqlT/Q2./

@Mr.Xcoder So what's the point of clicking it?

@cairdcoinheringaahing Rickrolling :c
@LeakyNun The exact same here

1 min ago, by caird coinheringaahing
@Mr.Xcoder He rickrolled, which isn't funny anymore.

@cairdcoinheringaahing :c ಠ_ಠ

Also, its one of the few songs I actively dislike

4:29 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing I also actively dislike the most viewed "song" on youtube

@Mr.Xcoder Despacito?

@cairdcoinheringaahing yes
oops, forgot to click "dislike" ;p.... and not anymore
:P
Wow Tetris hit 400votes

@Mr.Xcoder Why? Asses, singing in a language you don't know and wild geese. What isn't there to like? :P

@Mr.Xcoder 400 total score, even. It's moving up on the list of most-upvoted questions!

@El'endiaStarman Rapidly.
HOW IS TETRIS NOT ON HNQ???????

4:32 PM
@El'endiaStarman 60 more and Joe Z. will officially become the best challenge setter. Having the top 2 clearly shows he's doing something right

JoeZ does have an unusual number of super-upvoted challenges.

@Mr.Xcoder It's already been on there in 2013, it can't get on there again

oh :c

@Mr.Xcoder hot new questions

@dzaima hot network questions

4:33 PM
@dzaima Nope, some challenges have got on the HNQ a year or more after being posted
Also, from the revision history:
> add puzzle tag, since there's no "thought-experiment" tag.

wow JoeZ appears 4 times on the first voted questions page
and Helka 6 times, :O

Joe Z. vs Calvin‌. Joe wins
Although, in terms of 100+ votes, Joe loses to Calvin

Poll: On what page of highest voted challenges is your highest voted challenge?

@Mr.Xcoder I have challenge #48, so it's first page if I set 1 page = 50 questions.

@Mr.Xcoder 4th page

4:42 PM
@Mr.Xcoder 19th page (page size 50)

Mine is #3 page.

Poll: What page is your first post on this?

@cairdcoinheringaahing deep down :)

@Mr.Xcoder Mine's second on page 5 with 50 per page, so #202.

@Mr.Xcoder ~90 votes on xckd, and the first page ends at 181, so I redict page 3 for you

4:44 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing 5th page, page size 50.

Mine's #34 on page 1

@muddyfish :O lol

Q: I'm not the language you're looking for!

muddyfishIsn't it annoying when you find a piece of code and you don't know what language it was written in? This challenge attempts to somewhat solve this. Challenge You will have to write a program that when run in two different languages, will output the string: This program wasn't written in <lang...

@cairdcoinheringaahing page 72 :/

Poor dzaima :)

4:47 PM
Has everyone seen the latest xkcd? :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing Yes. My favorite feature there is "GPS transmitter".

@cairdcoinheringaahing I get notified every single time Randall posts them...
So yes

@cairdcoinheringaahing Welp I misread that as highest question. Still page 1 though

@muddyfish I wonder what question... :P

> Safe for ages 608 months, 10 months, 18 months-3 years, and 12 years and older
Beautiful
@Mr.Xcoder Too slow Joe

4:49 PM
@DJMcMayhem Damn... Anyway, I have forgotten about that :P

I would have had it up like 20 minutes ago, but Jelly doesn't like windows, so I had to boot up a VM to test it

Highest answer (hopefully Tetris will overthrow this): codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/99071/32686

@DJMcMayhem You use that crappy [a,] syntax :-/ - Still better than mine though

Idrc
So you like how it took me three different commits to implement a single function? xP

I did see that xD

Well, I see they really are waiting until November to do the site design.

Eyyy, it's @Geobits

I think you might have cursed it

So what's it's been now, 19 months since "graduation"?

5:03 PM
we'll get the design in nov 1

I'll believe that when Geobits says it.

Feb 16 '16 at 16:10, by Geobits
The way I heard it, we're "graduating" March 11, but the design and such will take until November 1.

Oh, well then I believe it.

@Geobits Long time, no see.

^ x2

5:08 PM
Aye, it's been a while

@Geobits Wow, I've never seen you here before. I've read stories the transcript, but never in person

@cairdcoinheringaahing "in person"

We just posted an answer to the Tetris question :D

Oh god, am I some sort of mythical thing in here now? Please no >_<

@Geobits Sorry, as per our new chat rules, you have to apply three months in advance for a reentry permit after a longer period of absence.

5:09 PM
@muddyfish The GoL one? dayum

@Geobits the downvoting daddy joker

Q: Randomly select from an array

Ian H.This challenge is rather simple: You are given an array of positive (not including 0) integers, and have to select a random element from this array. But here's the twist: The probability of selecting an element is dependent on the value of the integer, meaning as the integer grows larger, the pr...

Q: Build a working game of Tetris in Conway's Game of Life

Joe Z.Here is a theoretical question - one that doesn't afford an easy answer in any case, not even the trivial one. In Conway's Game of Life, there exist constructs such as the metapixel which allow the Game of Life to simulate any other Game-of-Life rule system as well. In addition, it is known that...

It removed the share thing D:

@Geobits did you get hit by Irma?

@Geobits Is it true that Alex A. once called you a troll? :P

5:12 PM
@muddyfish Holy wow. That's not an answer, it's a book. I'll have to peruse it more later :D
@quartata Barely. Lost power and got some wind, but otherwise very, very lucky here.

We thought it was fitting to write multiple

:D

@cairdcoinheringaahing Once? No, that is not true.
3

@Geobits anyway, what brings you back?

afaik geobits only preaches truth

5:13 PM
Don't get me wrong, we evacuated to a safe place, but my home didn't get hit much.

Still good

@mınxomaτ I put my application in the mail three months ago though :/

@Geobits the memes post is deleted

What are the odds that @Geobits is too shocked to reply to ^? :P

Crossed out memes are still memes.
@cairdcoinheringaahing Very low

5:18 PM
@Geobits Nope. That meme's gone as well ):

@cairdcoinheringaahing I think you missed the point. memers gonna meme

I think by definition, a meme is only "gone" when nobody remembers it.
Which is why you just lost the game.

in the age of the Internet
memes are not ever lost
or forgotten.

@Geobits why? I didn't think of "the game"

@Geobits really...

5:20 PM
they exist perpetually on the Internet
@EriktheOutgolfer You just did

@EriktheOutgolfer You have now
ninja'd

I lost the game

@ThomasWard now not before

I was never playing the game. I only play games which have names

The Game is the name of the game

5:21 PM
but it's a little bit impossible not to lose if you avoid reading "the game" because then you think of "the game" but if you read it "the game" will come into your mind so it's pretty much a forced loss or something

@EriktheOutgolfer Why yes, yes it is

@EriktheOutgolfer Isn't that the point of the game?

btw he lost the game too
because by typing "the game" he was thinking of it
(unless he's sleep-typing :p)

"When you play the game, you win or you die" Welp, nice knowing y'all

@Poke Really :P

5:25 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing reading that sentence means immediate death...also why should we use so macabre words? :p

@EriktheOutgolfer Because it's from Game of Thrones. If it isn't sexual or macabre, it isn't included in the final cut.

are we still talking about the same thing?

@EriktheOutgolfer Probably not
With the userscript for the site design, does that mean that Downgoat and Geobits have equivalent profile pictures? :P

Don't know, since I haven't installed that abomination. No offense to the creators or users, of course ;)

downgoat is here btw...

5:34 PM
He knows

What's the calculation for hotness points?

wasn't talking to him?

@Geobits Why is it an abomination? It makes it look as though we've graduated, I would've thought as though you'd love it :P

also the userscript isn't really such an abomination
that is, unless you want to edit answers with snippets, use auto tryitonline or search for chatrooms

The 'script is a lie

5:36 PM
it has auto leaderboard which is the main reason I use it
(even though it lags a little bit)

@EriktheOutgolfer A bit? It once told me that a 2-year old Jelly answer hadn't been posted yet

it doesn't count deleted answers? also it might've been ill-formatted or something

@EriktheOutgolfer Undeleted, and generic TIO format. Guess it's a bug feature

remember link?

@EriktheOutgolfer brb, finding it
@EriktheOutgolfer This one, but it shows up on the leaderboard now. Also, apparently, you're winning that challenge with -8 bytes :P

Q: Run skyrim or Doom in conway's game of life

commonSenseCode It can be in black and white for sake of simplicity. Or if you feel frisky at least use 8 colors.

@NewMainPosts And here come the downsides of having Tetris GoL being answered.

@cairdcoinheringaahing probably posted on yhacker or something

It is taking quite a long time to get closed. Main must be sleepy.

@AdmBorkBork That's a work of genius

5:55 PM
@NewMainPosts I actually can't decide if this is some kind of prank. The OP has quite an active SO account, and has asked some good questions, so knows that questions have to be detailed else be closed. So why would they post a question with 2 lines?
