@ATaco huh?

@ASCII-only So I guess I would go "yes" because there's only two atoms and one ionic bond?

@LegionMammal978 Yes
In chemistry, the law of definite proportions, sometimes called Proust's law or the law of definite composition, or law of constant composition states that a given chemical compound always contains its component elements in fixed ratio (by mass) and does not depend on its source and method of preparation. An equivalent statement is the law of constant composition, which states that all samples of a given chemical compound have the same elemental composition by mass. For example, oxygen makes up about 8/9 of the mass of any sample of pure water, while hydrogen makes up the remaining 1/9 of the mass...

CMC: Place a bounty on a unanswered question to help clear up the unanswered list.

@programmer5000 That isn't going to help

12:34 AM
.-. how do you make a cyclic levenquine with no characters in common
wat
well actually it's possible
but it has to be an alternating quine for many languages D:

A: Build a working game of Tetris in Conway's Game of Life

PhiNotPiThis began as a quest but ended as an odyssey. Quest for Tetris Processor, 2,940,928 x 10,407,936 This project is the culmination of the efforts of many users over the course of the past 1 & 1/2 years. QFT has landed

:O
time to start golfing :P although I'm sure everyone wants a long break first

Be sure to sort by oldest.
That's the presentation order.

Yeah, that should be the default

1:20 AM
HnQ when?

@ATaco HnQ???

Hot Network Questions

hot network questions ninja

n != Network

@quartata is someone else going to +500pt bounty or should I

1:22 AM
@Downgoat but is CW, do you really want to

@ATaco ... but you lowercased "n", in which case it means and

Eeeeeeh.

:/ I can't evently distribute bounty beacuse new one must be at least twice old one
> Input to the game is performed by manually editing the contents of RAM address 1

Incredible work folks, I'm proud of everyone involved.

1:24 AM
> Incredibly
@Downgoat Well I can bounty

Blame Autocorrect

So if we find another three people then it'll work :P

@ATaco tacos have hooves confirm
@ASCII-only @ATaco up for bounty?

I'll bounty.

ok 2 more people

1:25 AM
@Downgoat There are a couple input boxes for that. Look for "breakpoint" after the code display.

oh wow just found the link very cool

...hmm, this would be a very good time to have the ability to not double subsequent bounties...

Am I running the Tetris correctly?

o.O Hmmm....
Oh, that's the prime-finding code.
You need to replace the QFTASM code with the provided source code for Tetris.

:O I replaced with the Tetris, this is really amazing

@Downgoat get with the times i have been running it for weeks :P

@Downgoat You should
be on the look out in Pong in 6-8 years
if I did my job correctly it'll be in C++

this is the part where future me replies to this

I got home and sat down on the computer I pulled off my sock and it ended up with my headphone cables in the sock. What happened O_O

1:55 AM
Time to try and port to glider gates :P

@quartata if you get C++ working I will take it to the next level
GoL written in GoL

We already said that

in The Quest for Tetris, yesterday, by muddyfish
Would that be a quine?

1:56 AM
That already exists

They're called metapixels

@ASCII-only I mean, pretty much. I think he means an interactive one though.

1:57 AM
Metapixels are interactive :P

@ASCII-only Well not in an easy way
although

@quartata Well it's even harder in the computer atm isn't it :P

I suppose our solid state memory is in metapixels too

I wonder if we could contact john Conway

1:58 AM
wtf happens if you write a quine in C++ and run it in GoL

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ Well, there's no STDIO....

@ATaco IIRC Conway is not happy with the fact that GoL is the thing most people remember him for.

@quartata have you tested entire Tetris in an GoL simulator yet?

yeah conway would probably not appreciate it

He might at least be impressed by the result

2:00 AM
@Downgoat I think mego tried it and it works but you need to use Hashlife

@quartata dang

otherwise it runs out of memory with quicklife
It's slow as hell though

On the website Programming Puzzles and code golf (codegolf.stackexchange.com) someone proposed creating Tetris in your game of life (Vanilla original rules) after several years of work (I did not work on it myself but did enjoy watching it get made) it has been finished, now the file is too big to be run effectively on a normal computer but here is where they are posting answers with details of how to run it and how it was done. I figured you should know since it is a large achievement for them.
I am going to send that to John Conway any advice for anything to put there?

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ 1.5 years != several

Only 1.5 years? huh thought it was longer
Fixed it (one and a half)

2:07 AM
I wanted to link Computerphile, they might be able to do a story on this.

@quartata Definitely notify the presses!
I sent a message to conwaylife.com

@mbomb007 I sent an email to John Conway and am about to send one to Forbes get on my lvl

...

Maybe you should've let the people who actually created it send that?

Anonymous
2:19 AM
@Downgoat Like quartata said - I did, and it does require HashLife. Thankfully, our MacroCell file is compatible with HashLife. It's also insanely slow, even with large step sizes.

@mbomb007 I made sure to say that I didn't do it :P and you realize how prideful it sounds if you are tooting your own horn?

I imagine pong being both easier and harder.

Yeah they have the structure already

Make a C to Cogol compiler :P

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ well still, who said they even want to be on Forbes...

2:23 AM
@ATaco Yeah, I said to my fiancée that Pong is probably about the same complexity as Tetris, but in a different way.

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ says the one who just said "get on my lvl"?

@ATaco what's the point if they're making one for C++ to Cogol

@mbomb007 Ok the irony burns but that was a attempt at a joke
@ASCII-only wth you are ~100 rep above me :P when did that happen

Anonymous
@ASCII-only We (and by we I mean mostly quartata but I'm jumping on the sub-project too) are working on a GCC backend for QFTASM. We'd be able to use any language that GCC supports (with caveats).

@Mego Also this

2:26 AM
@Mego Wouldn't a LLVM compiler be easier? (I dunno how GCC backends work)

@Downgoat They're basically the same

GCC doesn't output LLVM that's Clang you're thinking of?

Anonymous
@Downgoat According to quartata, no. LLVM backends are much more complicated and poorly documented compared to GCC.

Can confirm, I tried reading the documentation of LLVM once.

@ASCII-only :O what if we compile VSL to QFTASM
> tried
it's not that bad :P

in The Quest for Tetris, 5 hours ago, by quartata
But hey at least it has documentation unlike LLVM

@Downgoat yes good idea
but we'd need gcc backend first

why would VSL use GCC backend???

Anonymous
@Downgoat VSL doesn't need a GCC backend. QFTASM does.

@Downgoat *frontend, for qftasm

LLVM frontends are easy. LLVM backends are hell.

Have you actually read it?
At any rate GCC dedicates multiple chapters to backends

in The Quest for Tetris, 5 hours ago, by quartata
But hey at least it has documentation unlike LLVM

It's hard to use but incredibly well documeted in most parts
@Downgoat That "documentation" tells you almost nothing

My docs are just the word "docs docs docs".toUpperCase(); over and over

it seems to be pretty specific

2:37 AM
No required patterns, info on base register classes, calling conventions and frame info, hooks for emitting sections or prologue/epilogue

Still better docs than RProgN2

I know it looks thorough but it's more about how the implementation is structured and not how to do it

> For some targets
10/10 for being specific
they do have seperate docs though which have more specific information on the classes/function

As much as I love you guys I love sleep right now bye o/
OK Despite what I said I went to reddit and clicked the random button 20-30 times and eded back up on /r/dota :P

1 hour later…
4:13 AM
@Christopher2EZ4RTZ huhwhat

Well we're not allowed to use allcaps in TNB anymore...

It doesn't say it in Chatiquette, so as long as it's not causing anyone grief, it doesn't seem incorrect to say "DOCS DOCS DOCS".

Yep
Also >_> do you have anything other than the word DOCS in your docs

Anonymous
4:33 AM
@Pavel You're not allowed to be obnoxious. That isn't a new rule. Repeatedly using all-caps in messages is obnoxious.

4:53 AM
@FunkyComputerMan I see you changed your name

@MistahFiggins Yep. Temporarily

(It wigs me out)

5:20 AM
(it bothers me so much)

1 hour later…
6:34 AM
@LeakyNun Well yes, hence why I filed a github issue. There's no reason why it couldn't deduce it for 0.

@Fatalize alright, thanks

2 hours later…
8:23 AM
And I finally woke up so I could post my part. I might have troubles with waking up at 2am :P

Ven
@Mayube thanks!

8:51 AM
@cairdcoinheringaahing I think we should maybe give up on golfing BrainFlump's source, I'm trying to troubleshoot a bug and it's just impossible cos the code is a mess :P

Q: Smallest Narcissistic Number

mdahmouneGiven a non null natural numbers n, find the smallest narcissistic number of n digit. A narcissistic number is a number which is the sum of its own digits, each raised to the power of the number of digits. For example, for n=3 (3 digits) the out put should be 153: 1^3 + 5^3 + 3^3 = 1 + 125 + 2...

And not 1 above 100 upvotes. Hah!

10:05 AM
@Fatalize ;_;

10:37 AM
@LeakyNun congrats!

@Fatalize that's smaller than 1?
:p
@LeakyNun I don't have any answer with over 100 upvotes...I don't compete for the upvotes :p

11:13 AM
@Mayube WHO WAS GOLFING THEIR INTERPRETER

@ASCII-only me

D: a great price will be paid

well me and caird
it's unmaintainable

Rip in pepperonis Mayube and caird

Enjoy the horror

I'd play on the server but I lost my charger and idk where to build things

wherever you want :P

11:58 AM
whoa tetris GoL answers are out :D

holy crap

Do we have a polarity challenge

mmhmm
guess we dont
maybe I shall make one

Is there a integer -> base 250 compressed number converter for Jelly?

12:13 PM
@HyperNeutrino should be in the tips

o ok thanks
huh it is, but it has +0/-0.

12:42 PM
@icrieverytim I tied Retina in Jelly :3

1:09 PM
It's got pretty good coverage for not even HNQ :P

yay I now have -3 from Retina :D

I just golfed something in C++ :/
For PE

1:25 PM
@Mr.Xcoder Welp you're now over 200 rep ahead of me because I just bountied 100 :P

@HyperNeutrino I earned 0 today... I am really going down badly

@El'endiaStarman Congrats on posting solving the tetris answers challenge!

yeah since you appear to be busier than me now during school I think I can catch up sometime soon
or at least hope :P

@HyperNeutrino I couldn't earn rep because I was ninja'd in Pyth on the last 3 challenges

1:27 PM
o rip

And now I am just golfing in C
BTW yay my CS prof just allowed me to switch from C++ to C
CMC: Given an array of 0s and 1s, return which one appears in a longer run of consecutive equal digits. In case of a tie, do whatever you want. [0, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0] -> 1

Jelly, 7 bytes: ŒgLÐṀḢḢ

@HyperNeutrino I have 5 bytes.

@HyperNeutrino 6 sorry

1:36 PM
ah ok

@Mr.Xcoder 05AB1E, 4 bytes: γ餤

Nice

Jelly, 6 bytes: ŒrṪÐṀḢ

Not mine, but close

@Mr.Xcoder SOGL, 11 bytes: ►:ΧA{:a=?XP

1:37 PM
@HyperNeutrino Jelly, 6 bytes: ŒgLÞṀḢ

@Mr.Xcoder Brachylog, 5 bytes: ḅlᵒth

@Emigna I had γé¤н BTW
Now to solve it in husk...

Yeah, the last 2 bytes can be replaced in a large amount of ways. I think the first 2 are required for 4 bytes though

@Emigna Even the third one is kind of needed.

1:42 PM
The third one could be any in [`¤θ] at least

Yeah, true
Husk (beats Jelly), 5 bytes: →→ÖLg

@Mr.Xcoder Jelly, 5 bytes: ŒrUṀṪ

@HyperNeutrino have you figured it out?

@LeakyNun not the group theory thing. I might be getting close but I don't really have much formalized yet

1:53 PM
The programming of Math:The esolang would be hard
I have to do it tho

sympy is your friend
or math.js

I have to tokenize all the operators. every. single. one.
including calculus.

what do you have so far?

@HyperNeutrino Leaky outgolfed us with run-length encode ;-{

@HyperNeutrino you want hint?

1:55 PM
@HyperNeutrino A lot of ideas

yup :(
@Nobody o rip

@Nobody Maybe you could use some LaTeX implementation for your parser.

@Mr.Xcoder Hyper got the idea of RLE first

@LeakyNun can you think of a hint that would kind of help me but not make it too easy?

@LeakyNun Hence the ;-{

1:55 PM
@LeakyNun I had the same idea as you except I was going to use rotate by 1 for each which would have taken 7 bytes :(
I forgot about vectorizing reverse :(

@HyperNeutrino i can't

well it's a proof by contradiction anyway

Ah okay

but anything beyond that might trivialize the problem

1:57 PM
my approach idea is to prove that if you have a group G and a proper subgroup H, any subset K of G that contains all x where x in G and x not in H but does not contain all of G will not be closed, does that seem about right?

oh great I have to tokenize/prioritize all of this

or is it straightforward just "take group G and subgroups H1 and H2 where H1 union H2 = G" and then bring that to a contradiction?

[text](url)

oh great I forgot formatting

1:59 PM
@HyperNeutrino I don't know where that would lead you
@HyperNeutrino it's more of a mix of both

Ah okay. Thanks.

darn this is a lot of symbols
a lot

also different contexts so rip you

ugh I am really going to hit thousands of lines on this
at least I think so
am I

maybe more

2:07 PM
;_;
also complex feels easy
(in front of a crap ton of symbols)

@Mayube Should I ungolf it?

I really have to use := for definition
thats the proper one
the only thing is that every programming lang uses = bcz of, you know, Bjarne stroustroup

@Nobody Well, I agree with them :)
But I hate his language
:))

doesn't Lua use :=?

2:22 PM
@Mayube should I ungolf the BrainFlump interpreter?

yeah go for it

@Mayube do you mind if I make loops operate on the cell if there aren't any values on the dump?

wow

Oh my god, now we're getting questions like [StackOverflow] "How do you program this IoT controller to detect if milk is boiling in the kettle?", [Parenting] "What do you do when your kids try to boil milk in a kettle?", [Academia] "Has anyone researched what happens when milk is boiled in a kettle?", [WorldBuilding] "What if you could boil milk in a kettle?", [Unix] "Why is there no milk-boiling equivalent to cowsay?", [Security] "How can I protect my privacy when boiling milk in a kettle?", [Biology] "Did humans' invention of a kettle affect their co-evolution with cows?" etc — Mehrdad 15 hours ago

Holy ****, I just noticed the QFT question has been answered (yes I know I'm late but still, wow)

:P

@cairdcoinheringaahing Wow, that's a bit late :))

@Mr.Xcoder People have to sleep sometime, y'know...

@Mr.Xcoder Damn school. Got posted as I was leaving, just got back

2:43 PM
@El'endiaStarman I know :) - You all did a wonderful job, upvoted y'all already

tfw you're debugging sql and you're using RAISEERROR instead of RAISERROR

what
Use RaiseError because case doesn't matter :P

i had an extra "E"

I do kinda wish that only 1 person had managed to do it, just to see them get the Legendary badge in exactly 200 consecutive days

there's only 1 in the keyword

2:44 PM
heh i'm at 23/50 for Epic D:

oh
that's just weird

why?

@Mr.Xcoder ಠ_ಠ I'm at 2/50

no I mean RAISERROR

o
sorry then
Wait, SQL trims consecutive equal LETTERS?

2:46 PM
@Mr.Xcoder Don't apologise for being better than me at something. If that were the case, people would always being apologising to me :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing I was responding to Hyper: no I mean RAISERROR
@cairdcoinheringaahing lol

@Mr.Xcoder I'm not lol'ing :P

@HyperNeutrino RAZOR?

@cairdcoinheringaahing I am though

@AdmBorkBork yes :P

2:48 PM
Anyone up for some JHT? I'm bored. I want to get better at Jelly

yup, in a bit; I need to move from the library to the music room in a bit

@cairdcoinheringaahing Just a second, let me read (or solve) the new main challenge

@Mr.Xcoder Meh, too complicated for me (even though it references GoT)

I read GoL instead of GoT at first :P

@Mr.Xcoder mwahaha
it's working

2:53 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing I'll just ping you there when I'm done?

@Mr.Xcoder Sure, I'll open the required tabs :P
