10:00 PM
assassin's creed series release new games every 10 minutes and the collectors editions don't gain much value over time now
and well like I'd recommend buying base game then waiting a month or two and just picking up the collector's edition off ebay for like half price

@Avery Ubisoft made the explicit decision to spend an extra year on it.
I seriously hope Astaroth will be up by the time it comes out.

like
this used to cost like 90 or 120 at time of release
now it goes for 50 on ebay

I don't take doing this lightly, and despite concerns about how microtransactions, if present, will be implemented (though I doubt it'll a serious issue), I'm confident this game will turn out well.

I haven't been interested in any recent AC games, but Origins might end up on my shelf.

They did learn their lesson after the AC Unity disaster, and this is reflected in Syndicate.
I haven't even finished Black Flag FWIW - hopefully, I'll be able to do so soon.
...and I'm back home.

You know how I got started with Assassin's Creed? Because I figured I would try something a bit different from what I was playing at the time and got AC1 and AC2 for our Xbox 360 at the local game store. I was immediately hooked.

lol
The console versions of the Dawn of the Creed Collector's Edition were all sold out, and I suspected there were few PC copies remaining.
Again, I don't take spending $160 on a game lightly. I gave this very serious thought.

eh
hope your investment is a good investment

(AARGH, why does chat post a new copy when I edit?!)

10:23 PM
Yea, I remember getting AC1 at launch. I was completely sideswiped by the plot twist.
Well, not so much the plot twist, but just the fact that the whole game is set inside the genetic memories, etc.

It's a cornerstone of Assassin's Creed. A secret war between Assassins and Templars, rediscovering the past to prepare for the modern-day conflict.
Lemme launch Uplay...
...yep, it's there.

10:41 PM
I like AC also
I just wish I didn't corrupt my AC2 part II save game

Brotherhood?

(had that stupid loading seqenance and I shut my xbox off
Yeah
was over 7 years ago, man :)
I don't even remember what I had lunch today
I am looking forward to Shadow of War
I know, I know, I shouldn't buy it because of the Pay to win aspect, but I love the first game

You know what irks me about the video game industry? Out-of-control development costs are making microtransactions a necessity rather than merely an extra revenue stream.
Nobody hears about just how expensive it is to make a AAA game these days.
When $60 a copy plus DLCs aren't enough, you wind up with microtransactions.

Try to spend less, and you wind up with a product that fails to meet customer expectations. Raise the base price, and people won't buy. Hence, developers and publishers are covering up the true cost with DLC packs, microtransactions, preorder bonuses, season passes, special editions, etc.
It's something we gamers will have to deal with, at least until the economy improves enough to allow a higher sticker price.

I think what people are upset about Shadow of War is the random nature of the packs
AC you can purchase currency, and it would be enough to finish the game, no random stats
Of course this new AC does have that....so guess what you will be able to do :-)
but the loot chests is what I think people have a problem with
But don't listen to me I purchase the limited Editon of Fornte the biggest loot chest game on the market.

@bwDraco I wonder how much is "we need this to cover the costs", how much is "we do it because we can and because everyone is doing it" and how much is pure greed.

10:51 PM
@Ramhound It's to get people to buy more.
I fear we are approaching a point where the industry cannot economically sustain itself and collapses under its own weight.

@bwDraco - I don't know if the market will allow the price to really increase
Entertainment has a certain value

@ThatBrazilianPony Budgets are routinely approaching $100m.

$40-99 is the limit for most people
Its the cost of a movie, costs of a park ticket to Bush Gardens, cost of going out to paintball field, ect,ect
Once you get past that $99.99 you get in entirely different mind set
<--- Has a MBA

I suspect things are a bit better with the shift to digital but the profit margins aren't exactly great.

@Ramhound And, to get past that mindset / mask the realization one is spending a lot, companies use microtransactions.

10:54 PM
@ThatBrazilianPony - Indeed
I am not sure saying the profit margins are not great is fair to say
If that wasn't the case we wouldn't have as many players as we do
Publishing to Xbox/PS is practically free because even publishing to Steam isn't free
Which is one of the reasons EA/Uplay own digital platforms exist
Hitman's developer has sort of proven their model works although them going independent if for other reasons.
I suspect we might get games broken down into episodes in the future
It would be interesting if Halo/Call of Duty/Battlefield were released with say 2 maps, and you would have to wait 30 days, to get a new map
The next map pack would be a that magic $4.99 price point
I could see people getting the base game if it was $19.99, but then purchasing maps, or even do what Rainbow Six did. You purchase heroes with special abilities outside of that it's a generic 5v5 game.

> It doesn't take a game designer to know that when a critical darling sells 3.5 million copies at $60 a pop and becomes a "failure," there is something seriously wrong with the way the industry is making and marketing games.

Bob
morn

@Ramhound That's the logical next step. FFVII Remake is expected to go down this path.

FFXV was suppose to ended up not doing that

11:29 PM
Wow, my home connection gets a connection attempt about every 30 seconds
ssh, telnet, web, ms-sql, torrent, proxy, xbox, some "CPE WAN Management Protocol Technical Report 069"
> TCP/443: https 552
TCP/23: telnet 152
TCP/80: http 94
TCP/22: ssh 47

TR-069 (Technical Report 069) is a technical specification that defines an application layer protocol for remote management of end-user devices. It was published by the Broadband Forum and entitled CPE WAN Management Protocol (CWMP). As a bidirectional SOAP/HTTP-based protocol, it provides the communication between customer-premises equipment (CPE) and Auto Configuration Servers (ACS). It includes both a safe auto configuration and the control of other CPE management functions within an integrated framework. The protocol addresses the growing number of different Internet access devices such as...
Alright, got stuff to do.
Gotta post-process those images!

Ok, from what I undrestood, TR-069 is "people trying to remotely configure my router"
!!no

##/no

It's either my ISP or hackers. At least the hackers have a chance of being competent.

11:39 PM
It's meant for configuring things like cable modems.

I configure my devices myself, thankyouverymuch.

I understand that an ISP requires a certain level of control over the modem, but repeated pings are suspicious.
Especially if there's a separate router in front of it.

@bwDraco This specific port got only 45 connection attempts in seven hours.
33 of those from IPs with the first 2 octets being the same as my current IP.

@ThatBrazilianPony You might want to call your ISP.

These sound legit. Unwanted, unwelcomed, but legit.
My ISP's support is mostly morons. I know, I worked there for a couple months.
They'll probably ask if my modem has a red light on and I'd say "it does, but my connection works" and their heads would explode
(It's a PPPoE connection status LED, but my pfSense box is doing PPPoE in my case, so the modem LED goes red)

11:52 PM
@fixer1234,Hi,I hope that everything is going well where you live,I'm reading bad news about the weather.I give you good news, magically,I don't know how,I received the update.I hope to read from you soon.Have a good night.

So... According to ipinfo.io the IPs probing my ip for TR-069 are IPs of other users of my ISP.
It's always a different IP
And then there's this
> Port 7547 SOAP Remote Code Execution Attack Against DSL Modems
> Reviewing port 7547 scans with port 443 open results in the exclusive receipt of Zyxel SSL certificates.
depth=0 C = CN, ST = TAIWAN, L = XINZHU, O = ZyXEL, OU = DSL Unit, CN = ZyXEL, emailAddress = support@zyxel.com
It appears they make the vulnerable routers but that they are likely sold under different brands, or distributed by ISPs using their brand.

*ALERT: There is imminent danger of life-threatening, CATASTROPHIC storm surge for SW #Florida. If ordered to evacuate, do so immediately!

Guess which brand my ISP replaced when they took the old modem away? Zyxel!
