4:00 PM
Exams are over now, so there's not much pressure. I'm overall ok with my school workload.

user228700
Oh, that's nice, seeing as you're now in 12th and all.

user228700
> I'm overall ok with my school workload

user228700
It would seem that your teachers are far too kind :-P

I know, I like my school

user228700
Wow. Good for you! :-P

4:02 PM
I do have too much math to learn though

user228700
I wish that 75% attendance wasn't mandatory here; there could be no bigger waste of my time than actually attending Calculus class. I needed to come back and do hours upon hours of work to understand wtf she was going on about.

user228700
@BalarkaSen You mean outside of class, don't you?

@Kaumudi.H Really? The calculus class is not good?

user228700
Nope. Khan Academy FTW.

Yeah I meant unofficial math

user228700
4:04 PM
@BalarkaSen Ah, isn't there too much Math to learn at any given point in time?

What's in your calc syllabus?

user228700
@BalarkaSen As of now, it's kids stuff, I guess; Convergence & Divergence of series and partial derivatives. I forget what we have when we get back after vacations.

I wouldn't say it's "kids stuff". They are the foundations, and are very important in life. :)

user228700
Hmm :-) In any case, my teacher is most rubbish at her job.

That sucks

user228700
4:09 PM
BTW, @Balarka: From having known what little I do about you, I can attest to the fact that you will not enjoy certain aspects of college, one of them being the social side of it all.

yeah i really have not much to communicate with the generic crowd

@ACuriousMind so, still no idea what a socle is?

user228700
@BalarkaSen x'D That's an excellent way to put it!

i felt a little comfortable after seeing the CMI crowd in the workshop though

user228700
Oh, you did? That's good :-)

4:11 PM
@ACuriousMind using Zorn that definition is equivalent to the largest semi simple submodule

user228700
God knows that I remain locked inside my room all day.

@BalarkaSen if Indian colleges are like American ones there's 30 people you like and 30,000 who are completely boring

@Kaumudi.H yeah uh for nonstandard reasons
a proportion of the crowd are potheads
:p

user228700
Ah.

@0ßelö7 Ah, well. I think we usually dealt with stuff where everything was semi-simple (also, I said I know the first four chapters of that and the socles don't seem to play any important role until chapter 5 :P)

4:14 PM
@0ßelö7 I guess so

user228700
@0ßelö7 My college has 1,800 students. By your estimate, that would be...1.8 people I like :-P

@ACuriousMind the exercises contain socles!

I think the generic American is like the generic Indian but wears stupid hats and eats more

@BalarkaSen and poops in a toilet.

r o f l

user228700
4:15 PM
And there is a fair chance that said person/persons (depending on whether you choose to see the glass as half full or half empty) is a senior, in which case said persons are prohibited from making any sort of contact with me.

@Kaumudi.H Why don't you read books and watch movies

user228700
@BalarkaSen I, hmm, I have been doing neither because I have been attempting to catch up with what they teach in class.

@Kaumudi.H what's the gender disparity?

you people are super workaholic
Blue, you and pretty much any indian guy i have seen here so far

user228700
@BalarkaSen And the worst part is that I don't even have a say in this matter!

4:18 PM
@BalarkaSen people who are driven but not super genius have to study A LOT

user228700
Soon enough though, my sister will send me some books I have been meaning to read and perhaps then I will start making time for reading everyday.

user228700
@0ßelö7 Yeah, man, not everybody is a super genius, like you :-P (@Balarka)

@0ßelö7 I am not a super genius. I ended up knowing more math but I am actually bad at hands on computations
and i have never worked my ass off on anything
and i sucked at everything, yeah

@BalarkaSen what did Ted say about being self deprecating

user228700
How did you simply end up knowing more Math? :-P

4:19 PM
Step1: Pick a book
Step2: Memorize terminologies
Step3: You are an expert in the field

@Kaumudi.H oh thanks for clarifying you weren't complimenting me

user228700
@0ßelö7 :-P Sorry.

user228700
@Balarka: My sleeping schedule will appall you, I'm sure.

orly?

user228700
I might be annoying my roommate by going to bed this early :-P

user228700
4:22 PM
I go to bed at 10:30 PM and wake at 5:30 AM.

oh jesus so you're a normie
what a normie sleep schedule

user228700
See, told ya.

user228700
I had a wacky sleep schedule last year though, let's not forget! :-P

hey are you up for a social experiment

user228700
Sure(?)

4:25 PM
i read a comment on youtube somewhere about tying coldplay fans to a chair and playing Bowie's Berlin era songs or Scott Walker's experimental albums to them for torture and torment

user228700
Yeah, I saw that message -_-

user228700
What about it?

here is my experiment
oh i did ping it to you didn't i

@Kaumudi.H you are

user228700
@BalarkaSen (Bear with me, my internet is too slow)

user228700
4:26 PM
@BalarkaSen You did, yep.

is this college internet or phone internet

@BalarkaSen his voice sounds a bit like Anthony and the Johnsons ...

user228700
@BalarkaSen The latter.

user228700
What college internet, lol (::internally screaming::).

Oh, they don't give internet in hostels? Frick

4:28 PM
what is this hostle thing
is it an Indian word

@0ßelö7 Dormitory

@PrathyushPoduval so why not say that

Well, different culture i guess
We're used to calling it hostels

@JohnRennie I don't think I know them. His works are a bit operatic

user228700
@0ßelö7 It's English, man, geez.

I have heard the adjective "baritone voice" applied to his works

user228700
@BalarkaSen Yeah, IKR?

@BalarkaSen no internet = no memes

user228700
@BalarkaSen Ah, the title has loaded only now.

let's not talk about memes...

4:31 PM
@CooperCape why

Little pictures with a comment on them? For me it explains itself.

r/dankmemes r/prequelmemes r/surrealmemes r/memeeconomy

I mean at first
it was fine
now it's just weird.

if you don't read these every day, what are you doing with your life
@CooperCape that's like calling music random sound waves

@Kaumudi.H Maybe you can get internet connectors? Like those pendrive like thingys

user228700
4:32 PM
@Balarka:

I'd do that if internet is bad
can't live w/o memes

user228700

haha, it's fine, i was mostly joking

user228700
There. I'll listen to it in the morning, when the speed is drastically better.

Most memes now have gone off from normal...

user228700
4:33 PM
It's one of the reasons I am waking up earlier, actually.

glad that you'll watch it. i don't think you'd like it particularly

user228700
@BalarkaSen :-P I'll let you know.

@JohnRennie I see what you mean now. Indeed the vocals are similar in texture
Walker's gets cracked as you progress through Tilt, Drift and Bish Bosch (the experimental trilogy)
consistent with the content, which goes horrendouser

@BalarkaSen Anthony and the Johnsons won the Mercury music prize with their first album. But then they split and the singer Anohni is now a solo performer.

@CooperCape r/dankchristianmemes

4:36 PM
oooh goody

@JohnRennie Interesting.

user228700
@BalarkaSen It's only this terrible after 9 PM.

ah I see

DAMN.

@Kaumudi.H No JiO there?

user228700
4:38 PM
I'm using Jio right now.

JIO?

Well, thats bad then. I don't think you have hope then :P

user228700
The speed reduces a lot after 9 PM (presumably when everybody starts using it) is all.

@0ßelö7 Indian phone company that revolutionised mobile comms in India.

@0ßelö7 Indian Telecom Service, recently started providing high speed mobile internet for low prices,

user228700
4:39 PM
@PrathyushPoduval Indeed, lol.

@0ßelö7 who is the guy in the suit? An American politician? Or is that the preacher who refused to open his church?

user228700
Ah, 10:10. I should probably "get ready for bed", sigh.

@0ßelö7 have you seen the new big ben meme
it's the freshest thing in the dank meme world

@Kaumudi.H look on the bright side. Tomorrow you'll awake refreshed and ... it's a holiday! :-)

@JohnRennie the preacher

4:41 PM
@BalarkaSen What are your sources for good memes?

@BalarkaSen I have not
@BalarkaSen @ACuriousMind I have a finite-dimensional $k$-algebra $A$, where $k$ is a closed field. Now $S$ is a simple $A$-module. Is $S$ a finite-dimensional vec sp.?

@0ßelö7 I saw some headline about the story but know nothing more about it (and to be honest care less) so I'm not n a position to comment.

@PrathyushPoduval Well, "meme" in general is a very broad category. I am more in the side of dank memes, which are visually dazzling and musically motivated memes.

Doesn't dank mean dark and wet?

I like the various reddits, Anthony Fantano's shitposting channel, Dolan Darker and grandayy

4:43 PM
@JohnRennie Thats what I thought

@JohnRennie It's the pothead's word for good stuff, I think?

Dutch for thank

@BalarkaSen later, need modules now

From the urban dictionary:
> Dank, is an adjective which is over-used by people in general and mostly by people trying to appear cool to their stoner friends.
And I thought some of my posts here were bitchy :-)

4:47 PM
urbandictionary is great in general

@BalarkaSen I need some dank algebra bro

@Kaumudi.H Thanks :) How are your classes going?

@0ßelö7 I don't know any algebra unfortunately

@BalarkaSen you really don't know the answer to my question?

What does a simple module mean?

4:50 PM
@BalarkaSen has no nontrivial submodules

Hey! It's done :D

jesus, clean up that desktop

Anonymous
It's smooth :)

4:53 PM
Hooray! It works :-)
Does it feel faster?

Anonymous
@JohnRennie Yeah. It does! :D Hoperfully it won't get filled with junk files again (anytime soon):P

@0ßelö7 Uh, so $k[x, y]/(x)$ is a simple $k[x, y]$-module isn't it?

@BalarkaSen I don't know what that means

@Blue It's just possible I might have a 128GB SSD in my pile of bits if you're interested.

what is $(x)$

4:55 PM
:-) oops

The ideal generated by $x$. $k[x, y]/(x)$ is literally isomorphic to $k[y]$

@BalarkaSen Oh, sure.

Anonymous
@JohnRennie ummm...."pile of bits" ?

But $k[y]$ is not a finite dimensional $k$-vector space...

Anonymous
You mean you might have a spare one?

4:56 PM
I get old broken laptops from the place I work. I dismantle them and attempt to construct working laptops from all the bits.

Nice hobby

I have a feeling there is at least one spare 128GB SSD in the pile if you want it.

How many working laptops did you end up with?

@BalarkaSen Uh, what if you multiply by $x$. Do you want to set $x=0$ after doing the formal manipulation?

But, I'm about to go away for a week so it will have to wait until I'm back.

4:58 PM
Right, yup @0ßelö7

@BalarkaSen I said $A$ has to be a finite-dimensional $k$-algebra. What's $A$ here?

Anonymous
@JohnRennie I would be interested in having it, but I don't want to trouble you :) It's difficult sending stuff overseas

$A = k[x, y]$

@BalarkaSen How is that finite-dimensional

@PrathyushPoduval sadly not very many. It's mostly the same things that break so it's hard to put together one complete working laptop. I end up having to source second hand parts from eBay.

4:59 PM
oh I guess I forgot what finite dimensional means

Anonymous
I think my laptop is more or less working fine now

just finite dimensional as a k-vector space i guess

@BalarkaSen Yeah, presumably.

Ok, this is too hard for me

@ACuriousMind !

5:00 PM
@Blue sending disks to India is fine if you lie about what's in the envelope :-) I've done that before and it worked. Postage to India is surpisingly low if it's a small envelope. About 250 rupees.

I chicken out

@Blue I have a 500GB SSD
it's broken but should still work

Sadly Blue's Dell laptop doesn't have a connector for M.2 disks

@JohnRennie send me a god church

@JohnRennie does it have a PCI slot?

Anonymous
5:01 PM
@JohnRennie Okay then..lol :P We can talk over mail if you wish :)

you live in the city of England don't you?

am I the only h-barer who hasn't gotten free stuff from @JohnRennie
@JohnRennie and you never did say if you read what I sent you

@Blue When I get back on Monday week (11th Sep) I'll ping you here and we'll sort something out.

Anonymous
@JohnRennie Sure. Take your time. There's absolutely no hurry. :) BTW are you at your mom's currently?

@0ßelö7 the poster? Yes I've read it and I think it's great. But if you're targetting regular STEM students I'd say you've aimed miles over their head.
@Blue no, I leave on Sunday.

5:04 PM
@JohnRennie It's too late to change anything but I'm not sure there's anything I can do to make it more approachable
I left out the technical details for Theorem 4
that one is the fun bit

I don't think you can explain GR to anyone who isn't willing to learn some maths.
SR maybe, but GR is a step too far.

@JohnRennie exactly

@BalarkaSen a god church ???

@JohnRennie it's a meme

The urban dictionary says:
> To be honest.... I dont fucking know. I think some stupid YouTube star named Logan or Jake Paul made a song with it in the lyrics?
I think that about sums it up :-)

5:08 PM
yup
it was Jake
@JohnRennie I suggest you watch the video
it has shaped youngsters such as @BalarkaSen and myself and is an integral component of the zeitgeist

tru
it's everyday bro is an integral part of the postmodern life now

In 30 years when are running the world we will remember the city of England
@BalarkaSen the title says it all: its everyday

Don't forget the "bro" though. By writing "bro" after "it's everyday", he's showing his brotherly affection towards his fan group, namely, the Jake Paulers, hence is an important part of the title.

For better or worse, JP is the modern day Elvis

Hm, I wonder if there are jake paul verbose memes

5:23 PM
Lmao

there is also one where JP's face gets increasingly distorted but on each panel he says "It's everyday bro"\

Guys for a project I want to write a computer program that takes an input mass (and other parameters) and outputs the curvature of space-time using the Schwarzchild metric. Does this sound like a plausible suggestion to achieve? (Timing isn't an issue)

Anonymous
@CooperCape Sounds like a plug-values-into-formula type program...

Yeah true...

Anonymous
So, what's the problem?

5:30 PM
I just want to make sure that I'm not putting my efforts into something that sounds idiotic/to someone with higher knowledge than me inachievable
That's why I was using the Schwarzchild metric as a starting point really...

@CooperCape That's pretty trivial
It's literally a division

It's for no one's purpose other than mine.
just as an interesting thing to do.

Here's the program : return 12 * 4 * G * G * m * m * pow(c, 4) / pow(r, 6);
ur welcome

welp that was easy
what's next...

5:45 PM
That's the kretschmann
Not the whole tensor

Yeah I do need to apply that to curvature...

5:57 PM
Cross-post in case someone here knows about coaxial cables:
0
Q: What tool is used to cut back the outer jacket and dielectric of a coaxial cable?

DanielSankI would like to assemble an SMA connector on an 0.086" semirigid coaxial cable. Here is an image of the assembly instructions on one such part (Amphenol 901-9723). As you can see, the outer jacket of the cable and dielectric must be cut back by dimenion a. What tool is suitable for cutting/sco...

@EmilioPisanty Yes it is gapped (at least for some $a_0/R$s) in the bulk. Their goal is to find $a_0/R$ so that the gap is closed by the one-way edge modes
@DanielSank A cable stripper
if you dont have one just burn the cable (dielectric) and cut the remaining outer copper wires using a knife :)

I'm soooooo bad at using cable strippers...

@DanielSank and even if you don't have a knife and fire and it's really important, just cut it using your teeth
[assuming you do have strong healthy incisors (front teeth)]

6:23 PM
"I'm willing to spend up to around $1,000 on a tool set."
at $1k, I suggest hiring someone with a cable stripper to do it for you

Hi! I had a quick question, not sure whether I should post it on main, since it's maybe a trivial problem but google doesn't help me much :(
How does flaming glass affect its surface tension ? The (very short) wiki article simply states that it does, but not really in what way.

1 hour later…
7:55 PM
@Hippalectryon I guess it would be better if you could make it a bit more specific, but that potentially could be posted on the main site. After all, if Google and the standard references (e.g. Wikipedia) don't bring up the answer, how trivial of a question can it be?

@DavidZ I just fear that "flaming glass" might not be the canonical name, which would explain the lack of results on google

8:08 PM
@BalarkaSen what the hell is geometric group theory and how do I learn it

Can anyone recommend a resource to have a solid, advanced knowledge in Python?

@Hippalectryon Ah, well if you explain what it is, maybe someone can dig up the correct term. That part you might want to try here in the chat room first before you post on the main site - but it is, in principle, fine to ask "if I do <this thing> to glass, does it affect the surface tension?" without knowing the name for the thing.
@nasil I'd say a solid, advanced knowledge only comes from a lot of coding experience. A tutorial, book, or course can help you get started, but I really recommend having a project to work on that you can use to gain experience.

i was thinking making a grapher
both 2 d and 3
also a nazi enigma machine
d
i would like to get started by a book and lectures and so on
a lecture and a book which both support each other would be great
also keyloggers, physics simulators
can be nice for projects

Just looked at the Phys.SE site stats. The Aug. 21, 2017 solar eclipse last week not surprisingly sparked a 50% increase in daily visits. Moreover, the fall semester is about to start.

8:44 PM
@DavidZ alright, thanks!

@DavidZ so do you have any advices on books?

Not particularly. I never used a book to learn Python, and most of the programming books I've used to learn other languages are not terribly useful.
There are probably good ones out there though. Maybe check on the python tag on Stack Overflow to see if they have any good suggestions. The official Python documentation also includes a tutorial which works for some people.

@DavidZ So how did you learn python

I started with it by taking a computational science class in college which used Python, but I didn't really learn it until I undertook a major project in the language
Basically programming a website CMS (before I knew that CMS's were a thing)

If I'm writing about the Calabi conjecture in a kind of formal document is it better to write it as "Eugenio Calabi's conjecture" or just as "Calabi's conjecture". They'll know exactly who it is either way...

@CooperCape I would consider it very unusual to mention the first name unless there is another guy working in the same field with the same surname.

Okay thanks :)
I thought it was a bit weird
'cause I just left Riemann as 'Riemann' not Georg etc...

@CooperCape good because his name is Bernhard

Bernardo Riemann

@ACuriousMind manifolds do look like potatoes

11:18 PM
True enough!

@0ßelö7 Nahh you gotta go the whole hog with Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann
