Q: An alien lands on Earth, women believes he's good turns out he's bad

MibacI remember watching a film some time ago (not more than 5 years ago, so the film probably isn't older than 2007 I'd guess). It was in English. I remember there was an alien who landed on Earth (don't remember how exactly he landed and whether the landing itself was shown). The government (or so...

Q: In Back to the Future, why doesn't Doc use the DeLorean in order to escape from the Libyans?

DanielBy the time Doc notices them, he's right next to the DeLorean, which even has one of the doors wide open. Couldn't he have just jumped into the car with Marty and time traveled out of there? I'm not sure what they would have done after that, but it seems like a better idea than trying to have fen...

@amflare Yeah, I only meant that the other two recent Planet of the Apes films (Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) were worth seeing to get the full effect, not the original 5 movies too.

A: In what order should I watch The planet of the Apes franchise?

Ankit SharmaStar Wars is a single franchise, but Planet of the Apes doesn't work like that. Jodie Whittaker will be the first female Doctor Who.
Blame Rand.
It is always Rand fault :P

I blame him for calling her "Doctor Who" instead of "the Doctor".

@Gallifreyan You know... at times like this I somehow wish English had some weird gender related pronoun/adjectives rules like Japanese....
But yep, at least I get to be the one to further annoy you.
@Gallifreyan You should call her "Doctor Who-chan"

Q: Enormous robots invade Earth through lightnings

MibacI watched a film not longer than 7 years ago. I remember that there was a thunder and on the next(?) day enormous robots out of Earth (they were underground). Later the main character discovered how did the robots get underground - through the lightnings. When a lightning struck the robot somehow...

I figured it out. If you can get these numbers to add up ~15 within 5 hours of posting, the question has a fighting chance of reaching HNQ. If they add up to ~20 or more, it is all but guaranteed.
Obviously, this is uber simplistic, but its roughly correct.

Or you can just use the formula?

Q: I'm guessing it's an alien movie

Adams91I saw this movie ages back however I remember only some scenes. Wish someone could help me out There is this man, he gets infected by these tiny beatle type creatures. I suppose it's an alien movie. The whole world gets affected and towards the end He becomes a monster, removes his skin.

@M&TVFeeds @AnkitSharma quick nuke!

@Edlothiad never let that stop you from doing something questionably worthwhile

I have things to do that are of some mild level of importance.
I don't mean to belittle you effort.

No worries, I use hyperbole and absurdity on a regular basis to convey a point. :)

wow, I am getting a lot more hate on meta than I was expecting. Apparently people don't like the idea of changing things

Buuuuut I've never seen it like that before.
And now I probably wont be able to unsee it.
Thanks a lot @DaaaahWhoosh.

:( the idea was to get it fixed so that no one has to see it any more. But it appears that's not going to happen now
I have a feeling it wasn't always this way, I only started noticing it a few weeks ago, I just can't find a screenshot to prove it
argh, every screenshot of the site on meta is cropped in such a way so as to be tantalizingly close to showing what I want

I've never seen it as a J before. Ever.
In the past 3 years, not once

but can you see the right side of the top of the 'F'?
it's supposed to be there but isn't showing up, at least for me

I just don't think it's important. No offense, but there are more important things to take care of.

4:53 PM
no, that's an argument I can accept. But "I like it this way and don't want it to change" is not
I think it's something that could be fixed, and would improve the site if it was. I just don't know if it's a big enough deal to actually get fixed
it's personally been bothering me ever since I noticed it, because when I started making Worldbuilding ads (like the one that shows up around here) that's the first thing people said, to make sure it scaled well
it's like, one of the most fundamental and basic design concepts. If you can't read something at resolutions it's expected to show up in, then something has gone wrong
in this case, it's not that you can't read it, but more that there's details that are definitely supposed to be there but aren't showing up because they're too small. To me, it makes it seem amateurish, especially since it should be a relatively simple thing to fix
I guess 'amateurish' is the wrong word to use. I understand that SE is big and have important things to worry about, and that pretty much everything these days has bugs. But from one design person to another, it seemed like something I was duty-bound to point out.
but I guess that obligation is now fulfilled, so I can stop worrying about it
(actually I can't, it's the first thing I see whenever I go to the site, but still)

@DaaaahWhoosh Copy the sprite. edit it. load it in yourself with stylish or something. profit

Q: 'Fantasy' font too thin, detail getting lost

DaaaahWhooshI'm talking about the site logo/title (this applies to both meta and the main site, but I'm using meta as the example): Specifically the 'F': As you may be able to see, there's a top swooshy bit that gets really, really thin for about the rightmost half, to the point where at normal zoom on...

@amflare lol yeah I guess I already do have an edited image, and loading it with a custom script sounds like something I should learn to do
probably in general I need to get more sleep. I seem to be caring more about things than I used to.

Q: How did Skynet screw the world even before its activation?

Sachin StarkIn Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines movie, Skynet infected most part of civilian Internet as a powerful unbeatable virus. It also broke US govt. firewall to hack US defense system. All these even before it was activated. How can a software do such things even before its execution?

8:18 PM
@Gallifreyan that's fantastic art!!

@doppelgreener A somewhat cliche-y "female" pose for Daenerys, and she'd hardly stand like that. Otherwise cool :)

8:44 PM
> That pose looks very uncomfortable

@amflare It's very frequently used for female superhero arts. Kind of misses the point of Daenerys' character.

@Gallifreyan I'm familiar with the cliche, but even so, it looks more painful than usual.

@amflare cough Spider-Woman cough

@Gallifreyan Those are fine. Maybe its more they gave the pose to Dany without also giving her a waspwaist or other features of an hourglass figure. IDK.
My lower spine hurts just looking at it.

Milo Manara's art in The Sandman was nice, but he insists on drawing women in over-sexualised poses, and they all have the same face.

8:53 PM
I think that's the attraction of Manara

On the other hand, the whole comics industry promoted (promotes) those poses and costumes, so maybe he was making fun of that.
@DukeZhou You're a mod now?! OMG! Congrats!

All these people becoming blue..

(I see Manara as a natural extension of Modigliani;)
@Gallifreyan thanks (although the downside is I now have to behave better)

@Mithrandir Asphyxiation?!

@Gallifreyan almost. But then the Heart of Gold showed up.

8:57 PM
@DukeZhou Aw, crap!
@DukeZhou No idea who that is :D

But my assumption was I was not the first person they asked, so I felt I should not refuse.

What is the improbability of that?

@Mithrandir It's finite, alright?

@Gallifreyan MONKEYS! THERE'S MONKEYS IN THE WALLS!

@Gallifreyan just image search "modigliani nudes" and you'll see what I mean. (My connection of the two artists is subjective, but Modigliani is well respected in the fine arts.)

8:59 PM
@DukeZhou Modigliani seems to favour one pose, based on the first page of the results.

@DukeZhou I think NietzscheanAI mentioned that months ago, that they were stepping down. I wondered why it was taking so long. (I know I didn't get an email :P)

Modigliani is not, perhaps, the draftsman that Manara is, but at the end of the day, his work sells for millions: nytimes.com/2015/11/10/arts/…
I was completely surprised they tapped me, (but then again, I never read the site guidelines and didn't realize it was meant to be humanities oriented to distinguish it from the applied statistics and cross validation stacks;)

@DukeZhou In the end of the day, I think I prefer Manara. I like his colours and realistic (if a bit idealised) figures more.

@DukeZhou I essentially stopped participating after recommendation questions starting being not closed, and other blatantly POB questions.

Manara is fun. I think I have a copy of his Gullivera laying around somewhere. (Although I am sure there are many people his erotic art offends)
@Mithrandir POB?

9:06 PM
Primarily opinion based

ic
@Mithrandir Definitely let me know if you think I could be doing anything better over there

(in defense of recommendations, some are useful. I recall a question where the asker was wondering about paying for an ML Python course, and the responses were a wealth of free resources to get started in Python ML dev)

Yeah... recommendations should probably get a meta post.
(but we maybe should take this to The Singularity)

That question is quite broad, but as a product manager, I understand where he was coming from. (Wants to put together a presentation.) It also provided a platform to comment on where AI is now vs. where it might go in terms on non-AI designers using AIs

Q: Can we rename this site to 'Science Fiction and Jantasy' to better reflect who we are?

MöozThere seems to be a strange misunderstanding that we're called 'Science Fiction and Fantasy' where in fact we're called 'Science Fiction and Jantasy, you can see it clearly in our logo. So, can we rename the site to reflect our real name?

@Marvin HA HA HA HA HA

@Marvin @DaaaahWhoosh what have you done?!

Just read through Apeshit by Carlton Merrick III and my God, but it's terrible. It's an over-the-top gorefest that layers on incest, abortion, and torture until it becomes boring and it's written in short choppy present tense like an attempt at an edgy Dick and Jane book. Q: Why are comic books listed under PN ("general literature"), and not under authors' respective categories in Library of Congress system?

GallifreyanAfter starting university and going to the library for some time, I noticed a peculiar thing: comics seem to be grouped under PN irrespective of their authors' general grouping. Take The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman, who is an English author: the first volume, Preludes and Nocturnes, has the L...
