So you either earn $10 or nothing, but the expected earnings are $5. It's the same with the bounty.

Huh
I guess that makes more sense
Except it costs no rep to answer

But it costs time.

Ahh

@Dennis I bet that you could've answered the question in the time of this conversation ;P.

Assuming there's an equal chance each answer would get the bounty, then each has a 20% chance of getting the rep. E = 0.2*100 + 0.8*0 = 20

8:02 PM
19 minutes? Maybe.
Plus now it's just a FGITW bounty, so there's no ifs ands or buts, the person who starts at it first is now most likely to win.

@Dennis I don't wanna play, because the house always wins.

That's because "the house" wouldn't let you pay $5. :P

Wait so my question got tweeted but got <200 views and no answers :(((

What I'm wondering is how many people actually check that Twitter feed.

What's a twitter?

8:05 PM
@HyperNeutrino I do, when I'm seeing my questions posted on twitter :D

@MagicOctopusUrn Something that twits

@DJMcMayhem is... is it me?

I like Twitter's suggestions on the left. I couldn't be less interested in any of them.

Wait twit means: "tease or taunt (someone), especially in a good-humored way." Didn't know that.
I always thought it was like "idiot".

8:07 PM

lol I remember that

@DJMcMayhem Or, MySpace and Twitter and Facebook for MyTwitFace

> youtwitface.com
ಠ_ಠ

:39016031 Why did you delete it?

@MDXF you pinged me? (In language dev). D'ya need a thing?

8:08 PM
Large images in chat, feels like it should be used for a laugh and removed.

@SocraticPhoenix Oh yeah, you'd asked a question and I answered a while ago so I pinged in case you didn't see it

But what's the point in a permanent transcript if you're just going to delete things afterwards? Besides, an un-boxed link takes up just as much space as the notification that a message was removed.

@HyperNeutrino There's a notification?

That's the notification.

8:10 PM
Not a notification, but more so a chat-message-like thingy

oh okay
@MagicOctopusUrn I've been wondering for quite a while why your name was "Magic Octopus Um"

:39016099 And those don't show up in the transcript, making it utterly confusing if messages got removed.

It's Urn ಠ_ಠ

Anagram of carusocomputing

I like that I can still reply to (removed) messages.

8:11 PM
Is that a mod thing?

I cannot do that.

No reply link.
:39016175 caret reply?

You can click on the history of the (removed)

oh hm.

IF you're the one who removed it?

8:11 PM
@MagicOctopusUrn um... no history link for me either.
That only works if you're the OP or a mod.

@HyperNeutrino Really? There is for me

Hyper, it's only on your own removed messages.
Oh, OP, doi.

xD
I don't see the reply links on removed messages though.

:39016175 i have a reply link to this message
got it...
doesn't actually link

Reply button for me

8:13 PM
Oh it's on the right side >.<

...as always

The reply button is there but it just @tags the person

I always click the dropdown on the left

@Poke That's what the reply button always does

@Poke yeah it's because there is no message to link to (I think)

8:13 PM
@HyperNeutrino That's not very golfy.

yeah but it usually links to the message

@HyperNeutrino 0/10 waste of time

@Dennis what, dropdown > reply?

:39016180 test
Oh yeah it doesn't link it

Actually, fun fact, I use caret reply. Even faster if you're not replying to messages that were posted a few days ago.

8:14 PM
wow that didn't even show up as a ping @MDXF

@HyperNeutrino Yep, two strokes instead of an ace.

@SocraticPhoenix Weird!

Oh hey you can also flag deleted messages... odd

But I always keep my mouse near the left side of the screen (for whatever strange reason) so it takes more time to move it to the right.

8:14 PM

heh

@MagicOctopusUrn accuracy?

Hmm, I wonder what's a good anagram for MD XF

@MDXF Well yeah, posting offensive stuff in chat isn't acceptable and if people could get away with it by deleting it before something could happen, that's bad. Moderators can still see what was posted even after it's been deleted.
@MDXF XD FM

@HyperNeutrino Oh, that's how I got suspended for three hours when I said I didn't like shog9

@MDXF Yeah probably :P

@MagicOctopusUrn Cool

There were not many good anagrams for mine...

Yeah because F DMX is so great

@MagicOctopusUrn <-- that's a pretty good one IMO...

8:17 PM
@MDXF "15 25"

@MagicOctopusUrn There were some worse ones... :P

@Adám how is that...

@MDXF CMC: Figure out how I got from "MD XF" to "15 25"

@Adám You made up a load of random crap? :P

@MDXF Nope.

8:18 PM
To find an anagram I just used: "carusocomputing".r2ä in 05AB1E and used wordsmith.org/anagram

ಠ_ಠ currently the server is being overloaded so there's a 13 character limit

Yeah, hence why I had to shuffle my name and split it in 2 aha

Well usually it's longer xD

@MDXF Better now? I had a typo.

Yeah, that site is pretty impressive.

is there anything decent xD

@Adám ASCII values of M+D and X+F?

@MDXF Nope.

@MDXF yes, lets DDoS TIO with permutations for HyperNeutrino. Dennis will blame him! It's FOOLPROOF!
2

@MagicOctopusUrn I don't think that's very nice.... (I say to avoid involvement)

8:21 PM
@SocraticPhoenix hey, I didn't run it xD.

@MagicOctopusUrn I totally didn't run it either ever I mean who knew their were so many permutations anyway?!

It gets killed for me :(

TIO is too smart for that @MagicOctopusUrn. Don't try to fool Dennis. :P

@MDXF The one I run would've been killed if I ran it ;)

/srv/wrappers/05ab1e: line 3: 16470 Killed python3 /opt/05ab1e/osabie.py .code.tio "$@" < .input.tio

8:22 PM
@SocraticPhoenix Whatever you say Artic Oxen, so Hip.

> osabie.py

@MDXF = 1000+500+10+15

@MagicOctopusUrn It would be slightly more difficult to DDoS with my name

@MagicOctopusUrn that's stretching it

I bet Segmentation Fault would have some good anagrams

8:23 PM
@Adám F is not a roman numeral xD I thought of that but F isn't one ಠ_ಠ

@DJMcMayhem I disagree

@SocraticPhoenix Arctic Hex Poison?

@MagicOctopusUrn I like that one better...

@HyperNeutrino Hex digit though.

You always get some awful anagrams, like Abscess Unit

8:24 PM
Not as much as my actual name though...

@Adám M and X are not, but they're Roman Num... oh

@BusinessCat Scabies Nuts, Basic Sunset and A Stubs Since?

@Adám ಠ_ಠ that's bringing a new meaning to "mixed base" :P
@MagicOctopusUrn please don't make this become a meme again xD

Interesting challenge idea: Convert mixed Roman-Hex numbers to decimal. (or the other way?)

@HyperNeutrino I wasn't here for it, another!

8:26 PM
hm?
anyway brb

I'm trying to find anagrams of Segmentation Fault but it's taking so long

@BusinessCat git one fun salt team
or one fun git salt team

@MDXF I've never played salt before, is it fun?

@SocraticPhoenix Yeah it's pretty interesting, especially as it's an anagram for meta and I can't figure out how to work that in there
one fit salt gun team

@MDXF A Female Ingot Stunt sounds fascinating

8:29 PM
@BusinessCat Yeah it does

@SocraticPhoenix o/

@NoahCristino I'm not in that room and I dunno Jelly sorry

8:44 PM
@Adám Would the Roman numerals be at face value, and the Hex digits be valued based on what column they're in?

@trichoplax Probably. But maybe FM should be 984?
And what to do about C and D?

And should a Hex digit to the left of a larger Roman numeral be subtracted from it?
Oh you meant that already...
What if FM is 744?

@trichoplax Right. There are definitely some things to think about.

Either way this could be interesting as "Find the shortest Roman-Hex representation of this integer"

@trichoplax Right, I thought of that, but first we need an unambiguous Romahex format.

8:50 PM
I guess you need to decide how many consecutive digits can be added together. Can you have IIII for 4, or only a maximum of 3 in a row?
This might be a long spec...

Also needs a name. "sex" (from Latin "sexadecimal") pops to mind.

@Adám the clarification was much needed :P

Definitely clickbait. Might not attract just your target audience...

It really wasn't:
In mathematics and computing, hexadecimal (also base 16, or hex) is a positional numeral system with a radix, or base, of 16. It uses sixteen distinct symbols, most often the symbols 0–9 to represent values zero to nine, and A, B, C, D, E, F (or alternatively a, b, c, d, e, f) to represent values ten to fifteen. Hexadecimal numerals are widely used by computer system designers and programmers. As each hexadecimal digit represents four binary digits (bits), it allows a more human-friendly representation of binary-coded values. One hexadecimal digit represents a nibble (4 bits), which is half of...

It would be great to have a name that is also a number in Romahex
What can be made from MDCLXVIABEF?

8:54 PM
CAFEBABE
;)

@Poke Preferably something that can't already be made with hex digits...

XCAFEBABEX
:]?
brings you back to the aol days
while also reminding you that java is great

@cairdcoinheringaahing This one's actually unrelated to usernames, and is for a challenge...

9:00 PM
@Poke Java only is great when used in your 'find a variable's name' answer ;)

@trichoplax just trying to help :D

I had some pleasant experiences with Java recently, in the context of MPS.

@cairdcoinheringaahing Maybe if someone happens to have that as a username... :P
Fad Climb Vex

@trichoplax its a Vex Climb Fad

@MDXF I want to argue because java is great but I also like the compliment. I have nothing to say ._.

9:01 PM
Actually there are more possibilities because we don't need to just use each letter once, and don't need to use all the letters

@trichoplax MADBACE

@Adám Weirdly, DECIMAL

@trichoplax Nice!

What's DECIMAL in decimal...?
I have no idea until you finalise the spec...

9:04 PM
@mınxomaτ what the heck... mind blown
Challenge idea: valid random program generator

@mınxomaτ Kind-of like how Dyalog runs shuffle QAs.

500 + (100-14) + (1000-1) + (50-10) = 1625

@trichoplax Nah, too simple. I want something where the meaning of C and D depend on their neighbors.

That sounds horrific. And awesome

9:11 PM
Is TIO down for anyone else?

Fine for me

Oh nvmd
It finally loaded

@programmer5000 Nice :)

@trichoplax Modern Roman numerals may only have a single subtracting char to the left of a bigger one, so how about saying C is Roman if to the immediate left of an M or to the on the right of a Roman M, D, C, optionally separated from them by a single X or I. D is only Roman if following an M, optionally separated by a single L, C, X, or I.

9:17 PM
@Downgoat yes it's evil

@trichoplax And thanks to that CnR, I have hit the repcap 2 days in a row

@Riker 0/10 blasphemy; it is amazing

@Adám So CM is a Roman C, MC is a Roman C, MD is a Roman D (and it took me a moment to realise DM has no reason to be Roman...)

@trichoplax Right.

@trichoplax read C, MC and was confused

9:21 PM
No this one's going to main :P

@trichoplax Yeah, it will be tough. I usually brew up an ungolfed APL solution before posting to Main, but this one… I don't feel like it!

Do you want D to be Roman in LD, CD, XD, ID even if they don't follow an M?

V is gonna do well in this one — caird coinheringaahing 15 mins ago
@cairdcoinheringaahing I appreciate the thought, but for whatever reason it's stupidly hard
I've been working on it for 30 minutes, and it's way too long and doesn't even work ;_;

@Adám Make it as richly horrific as possible - I'm sure you can find a volunteer to make a reference implementation...

@trichoplax Ah, yes. And D is Roman in 1D0, but Hex in 2D0.

9:26 PM
@Adám I'd completely forgotten about the decimal side of hexadecimal. How do 1 and I differ?
@Adám Is that for an intuitive reason, by analogy with ID0?

@trichoplax That's easy. I is always Roman, so it subtracts from anything but 0 and 1 on its right, while 1 has its base-16 value and subtracts if the next char on the right is bigger than its own value.

I'm guessing I would be always 1 (or -1), while 1 would be 16 to the power of the zero indexed column number
Ninjad
This is becoming so beautiful I think you might finally get people to switch from the imperial system

@trichoplax Must be so, 1D0 is either 500-256 or 256+208. The first isn't meaningful, as 256 is more than half of 500, so it must be 256+208.

@MartinEnder Congrats!

@MartinEnder what Dennis said!

@Adám The 208 escapes me

@Dennis Why? 150K?

Yes.

@Adám Oh yeah - I was stuck in Roman

@cairdcoinheringaahing, has anyone nominated any languages yet for your OEIS bounty?
@StepHen Don't forget to nominate any deserving answers to (more than 3 month-) old questions for the necro of the month.

9:42 PM
@PeterTaylor yeah I have 7 languages nominated. Why?

To see whether I want to write an answer in one. Why else?

@PeterTaylor They are: Malbolge, TrumpScript, Emojicode, Emoji, SNOBOL, Pip and Powershell, in case you want to get started

@trichoplax what are the chars of a MADBACE number called? numerals digits

Ah, PowerShell was on my mental list of languages I might try to fit in at some point. I don't really like it, but I've done a small amount with it in the past. And the next sequence is pretty simple.

@PeterTaylor I think we have different definitions of "simple" :P

9:48 PM
@Adám Just chars might do. I can't think of anything clever or catchy

@trichoplax symbols.

@cairdcoinheringaahing You should really use the reply button

@Adám Yeah that works

It's not quite just a sum of multinomial coefficients, but it's pretty close

Sorry that was poor timing on my part.

Hmm, how horrible would this name be - MD XF the Segmentation Fault
Nvm just writing that makes me realize how terrible it is

@Christopher that gif adds less than nothing to your challenge

@MDXF what does MDFX even stand for/mean?

@SocraticPhoenix Well, I picked it randomly when I created my StackOverflow account, and a few months ago I realized it is the only four letters not in my (full) name

9:52 PM
@Christopher it just takes 2x long to load on mobile, doesn't help explain the rules, and is kinda hard on the eyes

Ok cool

@MDXF you must have a long name... but that's a pretty cool coincidence!

I need a language on tio that prints the input text without anything else
I just put input text and it prints

@Anyone Charcoal has 0.3s overhead for some reason, can anyone figure out why?

Does it use Python?

@feersum yes

Well there you go. Python startup.

10:06 PM
@Christopher no, different room

@ASCII-only V has half a second of overhead :(

@ASCII-only y? Tnb is CMC room
Fine ez CMC. On TIO take input text and output input text as a deflate stream

@Christopher no I meant pointing message 1 won't work because it's in the sandbox

@Christopher :-( Dyalog only has native support for LZ4, zlib, and gzip .

@ASCII-only ohh
@Adám *or gzip

10:14 PM
Why or?

Because i just need an answer XD
Actually I just need something that compresses text for bubblegum that I can run online
no

totally missed the "online" part of it

@totallyhuman i can't even select the kind

hmm it seems it does not work

BTW, It could be a nice challenge to get all the languages from the TIO site

@sergiol JavaScript wins, by virtue of there being a languages.json you can lookup that lists metadata for all of them

@Phoenix are you sure?

Pretty sure, since JavaScript is really really good at parsing JSON files, and most golflangs can't access the internet anyway.

@sergiol oeis.org/A000201 in SNOBOL...

@PeterTaylor: ?!

10:38 PM
I don't care what happens in the past or future. If someone feels an uncomfortable, they can raise a flag. That can either be validated (suspending you from chat in the process), or not. Don't worry about it. Just watch what you say in this room from here on out.
If you feel that someone in this room is abusing flags, then go to your site's meta. From what I understand, they are able to see flag history in their rooms.
But otherwise, don't make a big deal out of it.
