Q: 2016 Community Moderator Election Results

Jon EricsonEnglish Language Learners' second moderator election has come to a close, the votes have been tallied, and the 2 new moderators are: They'll be joining the existing crew shortly — please thank them for volunteering, and share your assistance and advice with them as they learn the ropes! For ...

Nobody fights.
They run for the position, certainly.
But everything is done in a civil and peaceful manner.
And the existing mods aren't removed.

Yeah, and we don't need another mod at this moment. We already have 3 capable and very active mods here. Nobody fights, either. I don't know why someone would fight to be in a position where you constantly have to deal with the crap that they deal with here.

@steelershark Well, I wouldn't have anything against a Falco T-shirt actually. He had some awesome songs. ;-)

@DhanrajKumar link 1: "did said" is wrong: ell.stackexchange.com/questions/51021/what-did-you-say-said

@M.A.R. oK Did you find the link?

4:02 PM
@DhanrajKumar it was harder to search than I thought
ELL is always a mess

@M.A.R. thank you, you save my DAY.

@NapoleonWilson Okay. As long as you don't wear it in public when you're around me ;)

An unsearchable mess

@steelershark Awww, why? :'(

did you use google to find the link? @M.A.R.

4:03 PM
@NapoleonWilson I'm just playing with you, silly!

@DhanrajKumar nope, ELL's site search

google defeats stackexchange site search...... I have proof also....

Sure it does

@M.AR

But I'm too lazy to open a new tab

4:05 PM
@M.A.R. that's original.

No, just lazy

@AnkitSharma We already saw his Spider-Sense in Captain America: Civil War.

did you understand "That's original" means?
@M.A.R.

In fact the actor Jeroen Krabbé (who I coincidentally just saw yesterday in The Living Daylights) always reminds me of him.

I just never have given Falco a second thought, tbh.
I'm actually watching Staying Alive right now. There's obviously nothing else on ;)

@steelershark "I just never have given Falco a second thought" Are you saying already favorite singer already existed for you?

Best I got.

@M.A.R. didn't understand
My question is: How did you understand "That's original" means?

@DhanrajKumar No. It means that I simply don't care enough about him to give him a second thought.

@DhanrajKumar that's a search link. You should read the results on where to use "where you said" and "where did you say"

4:11 PM
" to give him a second thought." means? @steelershark I understand your first part of reply.

A: Help explaining "Where am I?" vs "...where I am"

BillJ [1] Where am I? [2] Do you know [where I am]? With main clause interrogatives like [1], the interrogative phrase usually occupies initial position and, if it is not the subject, its placement triggers subject-auxiliary inversion. But in subordinate interrogative clauses like the bracket...

Especially this one

@M.A.R. your are confused.

@DhanrajKumar because I know what "original" means, I guess I know what "that's original" means. O.o

@DhanrajKumar It means that I just don't care about him. If I see something about Falco, I just move on and don't think about him because I am not interested.

@M.A.R. I confused with your arrangement of words in sentence, It so jumble which makes difficult to understand.

4:13 PM
O.o Can we start over?

explodes

I have no idea what you mean now
2

@M.A.R. This are basic steps in english, I can't simply skip.

I'm providing further links about your question @Dhanraj, and you're . . . well, I have no idea what you're trying to say

@M.A.R. if i skip, then I live DUMB in english forever.

Skip what?

just tell me what does "that's original" means? I won't ask you any more questions @M.A.R.

  2. This manuscript is the original.
  3. A person with a unique and interesting personality and/or creative talent.

  5. (archaic) An eccentric.
If something is original, it's creative. A fresh idea

@DhanrajKumar Aren't you the one that said "that's original"?

4:18 PM
@DrRDizzle no we didn't and neither did in homecoming

If your idea is original @Dhanraj, you thought of it first

yeah, @steelershark but I thought @M.A.R. skipped that reply.

Before everyone else did

13 mins ago, by Dhanraj Kumar
@M.A.R. that's original.

@DhanrajKumar your reply wasn't a question o.o

4:19 PM
@DhanrajKumar He did reply.
14 mins ago, by M.A.R.
No, just lazy
That's his reply ^^

I'm awesome

@M.A.R. I'm referring to you as "he" sorry if that's not correct :)

I'm a he alright :)

@M.A.R. I don't understand what you mean. Could you please elaborate? :P

@M.A.R.

4:23 PM
@DhanrajKumar Ask someone on ELL site.
Each community has different standards/rules for their questions

@M.A.R. Ell daily user

@DhanrajKumar it could certainly be formed in a better way, but IMO it is a legit question
Let's just wait a little. One close vote isn't really serious

@M.A.R. please try to avoid shortcuts like IMO while replying to me, I am beginner to english subject.

@DhanrajKumar IMO = In My Opinion

@M.A.R. Ok

4:25 PM
@steelershark for

@AnkitSharma five

I am replying to your mysterious reply in a similarly mysterious fashion

@M.A.R. You do realize that this comment will be posted all across SE used as justification for keeping the question open? ;)

@M.A.R. ufff

4:29 PM
@steelershark I have won quite a number of close vote bloodsheds on meta ELL
I can take a couple more.

A: Is the Lego Death Star in Spider-Man: Homecoming a real product?

CreationEdgeThere are actually several variations of the Death Star set. The one in the movie was around 3800 pieces, so I believe it was intended to be Set 10188. That modeled was retired a couple years ago and replaced with one that is mostly the same, but has different minifigures and same other minor...

@AnkitSharma ^^

@M.A.R. are you saying most of your META questions got close votes?

@steelershark yeah, the HNQ is filled with homecoming questions

4:30 PM
@M.A.R. Hehehe!

@DhanrajKumar no, I'm saying I won arguments about whether or not to close questions
And I was usually on the closing side. o.o

@M.A.R. I think you are expert in Indirect Speech, which is why I am facing huge difficulty in understanding your words.

@DhanrajKumar But I didn't quote anyone. o.o I usually don't say anything important anyway, don't worry

AFK for a while, gonna listen to some tunes

4:38 PM
Bye :)

@steelershark ok
Too long chat to read, better I skip it

Yeah...it will just give you a headache ;)

A question for X Men fans, especially @AnkitSharma and @NapoleonWilson. Does it require to have seen the person Mystique need to take appearance of?

Do you mean if she can emulate a person that she has no idea of how that person looks like?

A J
Yes.

4:44 PM
I have zero knowledge about the comics, but...that sounds unlikely.
How else would she do that?

A J
In X Men Evolution a few times, she emulates a person that possibly she didn't see.

How would she identify the person to emulate to the eternal cosmic forces granting her her appearance?
She likely doesn't think "I want to look like Max Power from 123 Fake Street in Toronto, however that guy looks" and it magically happens.

A J
Dunno, it happened in the movies and animates show sometimes.
Are we suppose to assume that she had seen that person anywhere?

It's not too hard to gather how someone looks and sounds like nowadays.
Especially if she's emulating a public figure.

A J
In X Men prequel trilogy, she emulates person that she has seen, but it's not in X Men original trilogy.
In X Men 2000, she emulates a security guard after wounded by Wolverine.
We don't see that guard elsewhere in the movie.

4:54 PM
Anyway, that's just something I'd prescribe to the magic of X-Men mutation bullshit. When did that stuff ever make sense?

A J
@NapoleonWilson Public figure isn't hard, but for a person like security guard, it can be if you have not seen him.

@steelershark lol k
@AJ it was never made clear in films

A J
Yes, it was never.

@AJ how you can be sure she didn't seen that person
@AJ yes I suppose
@AJ how you so sure she didn't seen him before
@NapoleonWilson agreed

A J
@AnkitSharma We don't see him in the movie. That is why I asked that if we are just supposed to assume it.

5:25 PM
@AJ let's assume
Sound better that way

Q: Why were certain shots deliberately paced slowly in 2001: A Space Odyssey?

Rapid ReadersJust to provide a little background, Stanley Kubrick deliberately paced certain shots in near-slo-mo. You can see a ship lingering in the background for an entire minute, as the camera approached it at a hypnotically slow speed. There's a scene that lasts almost 7 minutes, where David exits the s...

@AnkitSharma gah, can you say a single chat message without being ungrammatical?
You're deteriorating my English.
Well, I guess your smileys are grammatical.
Probably.

A J
5:45 PM
@M.A.R. Ohh, I and Napoleon have tried a lot and gave up. ;)

@AJ I can try correcting him so often he'd give up making us give up and give up the ungrammaticalness
At the risk of becoming annoying
Which might make me give up

A J
Yes that's what happens

I up gave ago while a.

A J
He hasn't got a single post that didn't go through at least one edit by someone else.

Time to go to bed.

@AJ with so much exposure to English everyday, garden asparagus could have become a modern-day Shakespeare.
How can he still be Ankit? O.O

A J
Are you suggesting that we should call someone saying grammatically wrong sentence Ankit from now on? 😜

@AJ oh, makes sense
Shakespeare becomes Ankit by exposure to Ankit
2
So it's like a bad English spreading zombie

A J
Hahaha

Q: Motor City Masters : was the Hot Wheels model ever made?

Peter PitLockThe winner of Motor City Masters would have a actual Hot Wheels model made of the winning Camaro. I have searched far and wide, but cannot find the actual model that was made - but I do realise it could just be me not finding it. Has the model been made?

7:53 PM

Q: Why did Romero cast a Black actor as the lead?

cdeIt was not typically seen or accepted for a Black lead actor to be seen in mainstream movies. So why did Romero cast Duane Jones as Ben in Night of the Living Dead?

Q: Looking to find a science fiction film from the 80s or 90s, please and thanks

Ayari PorrasI saw this film on cinemax, it must have been 15 years ago, the film was much older of course. I have to say I was really high, all I remember is that it was a desert setting in a dystopian world, tuned cars (sort of mad max type) and the villain used a helmet with some wires to breathe, I don't ...

Blood Drive's ads are now making me sick
the ad for the latest episode has one of the characters talk about some weird sex party, that being dead is no barrier, girls taking their panties off, the main male lead saying "they're coming" in that exhausted kind of tone that makes you think he's actually saying "they're cumming" and every everyone is glowing white under UV Lights makes seeing people spew up white stuff really sickening
