3:04 PM
@Burgi no one has VCRs any more

i was being obtuse

hmmmmm
some people do
not sure why, but they DO ;D
my parents prob still have one
we still have a box of tapes in the loft.
then again my parents still have a 'fat' tv
curved crt screen on it too
At some point I might give them our old 32 inch xD
they will be like :O
but it's so THIN! :|

my parents "stole" my smart tv.... which was my nana's old tv
they do youtube casting and everything now

our main TV is a 12 year old plasma TV ;)

@JourneymanGeek clearly electricity is too cheap there.
Also didn't they suffer from getting extremely hot and then breaking?

3:08 PM
@djsmiley2k we don't use it that much

have the colours started shifting in the plasma?

@Burgi nope
actually the colours are really good
Its 640x480 tho

my friend's plasma went a weird pink
ok this is driving me mad...
why does PHP only work if there is an xdebug listening server?

because derp

3:12 PM
Back to work... 479 packages to update. +_+'
@Burgi Because it's PHP, and there's no way it won't have bugs? ;P

it used to work perfectly

"It works on my PC!"

Q: My wife wants a homosexual child

user28091We are planning to have our first child in about a year. My wife is very much into raising them genderless (or "post-gender" style) while my take on it is that we should raise them in a non-stereotypical manner, keeping an open mind for all there is. I even have problems defining how raising a ch...

...

yeah its xdebug

wtf?

3:15 PM
@djsmiley2k i saw that the other day

so weird

extremely

Why are you having..... kids... when you can't even.... life

having children uses unskilled labour

@djsmiley2k That's one of the few cases where we hope it's a troll because the alternative is worse.

3:17 PM
On the other hand, as far as they know, my system is working perfectly.
2

@ThatRussianGuy do you have childs?

Isn't it "children"?

@ThatRussianGuy today in RA: a Brazilian guy acting like a Russian guy lectures a British guy on the English language
3

Childlets.
Cmdlets? Childlets!

@djsmiley2k no, @BenN has cmdlets
4

3:21 PM
or 'Rogue Processes"
with bad " ; ;2'2'2"ing

ok so... i commented out xdebug in the php.ini and BOOM everything works

...
why was it turned on

apart from xdebug (obviously)

TRWTF is PHP.

> Children are not computers that the parents get to program. Raising them is more like planting a random seed some guy with a big white beard handed you. You can plant it and nurture it, give it the best most fertile soil you know how to provide, but what it grows up into isn't for you to decide. It could end up being a flower, or a tree for all you know. Just do your best, love it, and prepare to be amazed by whatever blooms.

3:25 PM
i was using it to fault trace some legacy code back in May
do you think it is worth me chuck up a SO question about the weird xdebug error?

sure
i'm presuming you didn't find a result there

not unless my google fu is also broken
how do i check if my google fu is working properly?
@Clippy has my back

how do i make my clippy get off from my life and this room?
yes please, oh my god

3:40 PM
i don't understand the grammar...
its almost like you aren't a native speaker

@Avery edit the source code, or force balpha to do it

@Burgi it's almost like I am not

;)

4:01 PM
sooooooo
power shell to search through a text file for a specific reference number
easy?
I'd want to take a reference, and grab the transactions both before and after it (and anything in between).
I could figure this stuff out with grep quite easily
seems I need select-string, interesting

4:13 PM
@Avery WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE CLIPPY?

I don't

just came across a site running JSP
very odd

Heh, I have to give a private organisation my thumbprint to get a SIM. I feel uncomfortable. Should I? (cc @Avery)

SI?

@Rahul2001 do you need to show ID

4:16 PM
@Avery Yes, give them a copy

then don't.

oh Sim,
heh
'anti-terroism' right?
Because they can't pay someone on the street to buy one for em

@Rahul2001 they kinda should not be storing your fingerprint.

@jokerdino But there's nothing stopping them from doing so. Indian laws, or lack thereof.

fingerprint as a secure fuction are so funneh
'Here's something we can't change, no matter what, lets use it in a secure function!'

4:19 PM
@Rahul2001 why not use a PAYG sim?

@Burgi whazzat?

@djsmiley2k Until your thumb gets chopped off in an accident ...

@Rahul2001 pay as you go

@Burgi I think it maybe simular to the problem over here, of buying TV Gear
'Name and Address please sir...'
@DavidPostill You don't get a new thumbprint tho

@Burgi Ah, prepaid. Because they don't have the same (brilliant) offer on mobile data as these guys

4:20 PM
@djsmiley2k you can't carry a severed thumb around

@Burgi you.... could
also, thumb printer readers not just something other people have.
iphone, S7.... blah blah blah
laptop
etc

@Burgi 3d print a replica

jellybaby hack

@Rahul2001 the law is that you cannot store such data.

blah blah blah
@jokerdino LOL, pretty sure the law in india also said you must keep all your moneys in the bank account
That worked out well.

4:21 PM
@djsmiley2k No, most people have finger print readers. Thumbs are not fingers ...

@jokerdino I don't feel very confident, still. Laws here are almost never enforced, especially those related to technology.

@DavidPostill not sure if joking

Of course they should be called digit readers ;)

@djsmiley2k I think he is

@djsmiley2k I forgot we made a law now.

4:22 PM
thumbs are still fingers

> The OxfordDictionaries.com definition for finger is as follows: ‘each of the four slender jointed parts attached to either hand (or five, if the thumb is included)’. This wording implies that, while the thumb isn’t typically regarded as a finger, there is enough evidence of this use to include it in the definition. Although thumbs have certain similarities to fingers, there are some key differences.

It’s therefore more accurate to describe a thumb as one of five digits that we have on each hand, rather than as a finger.
@djsmiley2k No they are not

@DavidPostill hmmmm
you've got 10 fingers right,
What do medical dictonaries say tho?
I guess they just say 'digit's?

@djsmiley2k Phalanges

ah dem bones
you know I nver noticed the lack of joints in my thumb til now
this makes me sad

The thumb is "Pollex"

4:27 PM
@djsmiley2k ccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc

becomes ||ccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc|| ?

exactly

...
soooooooooo

turns out the policy on SO with regards to people including their personal info in code examples is to just edit it out of the latest version and not to redact the info from the revisions

@Burgi makes sense, redactions are labour intensive so only really done if absolutely necessary

4:37 PM
lazy mod syndrome? ;)

@Burgi Really? Where does it say that?
@Mokubai Well if they made redaction easier ...

@DavidPostill in the flag response i got

Takes two mods, and if two aren't around it can take some time ping ponging it back and forth

fair enough

@Burgi What was the PII you flagged?

4:41 PM
?
OH!
i'm not down with the mod lingo

@Burgi Personal Identifying Information or something

that's a picture of Rex Tillerson, not Fred Manfra

It seems they won't normally for just email addresses:
> As a reminder, when requesting the removal of sensitive information:

Make sure it's really sensitive. Someone posting their email address in a post seeking a reply probably isn't sensitive; presumably they intended to do that, so just edit it out & tell them to not be selfish.

Edit out the sensitive information.

Delete the post.

Contact us. We'll undelete once the revision history has been redacted.
This was from before there was a mod tool.

fair enough

@DavidPostill Can you please email me the solution bro? My email is lazyjoomlacoder123@mac.com

4:47 PM
@allquixotic I would just edit that out and not bother redacting.

> Dear Mr Lazy, I have come into pocession of SIXTY FOUR MILLION DOLLARS in Nigeria

@Burgi If it was my home address passwords to the super secret servers then it should be redacted
3
A: When to redact revisions?

Rory AlsopGeneral guidance is to do it when someone has flagged for excessive PII (Personally Identifying Information) so this can include real name, email address, physical address, employer etc. where it will have negative consequences. Typically we see this where someone hasn't thought through a compla...

Q: IIS 500 Error When Trying to Update WordPress Locally

BurgiI am having a bit of a weird issue. I am updating a plugin locally to test it doesn't break anything on a clients site but I keep getting 500 errors unless I am running the xdebug listener in PHP Storm. As soon as I turn on the listener the plugin updates perfectly. This is my xdebug code from ...

5:13 PM
how about neither? is that an option?

I've found IIS to be reasonably manageable
IIS Express is great for a quick-and-dirty lightweight web server

yeah

They make a big show out of small stuff.

That's apple.
They made a show out of the fact you could use a mp3 for a ringtone years after everyone was already doing it.
They occasionally come out with something interesting, but this is just lolworthy right now

5:28 PM
I'm not giving any more updates about watchOS because none of it is really interesting.

=)

7:18 PM
So, I'm now officially on a job search. I'm holding weekly meetings with my college job counselor and the first resumes and emails have been sent out. In the meantime, I will be training for certifications to improve my chances at getting a job.
I will also be helping out with home improvement and hopefully learn to drive.

well the Apple keynote is over
TL;DW: minor updates to WatchOS, cool new iPad Pro features, neat AR coming in iOS 11, peer to peer Apple Pay, incremental updates to the Macbook, MBP and iMac, a new up to 18-core Xeon iMac Pro, and a $350 speaker

@djsmiley2k You're far better than me. I haven't played a good game like that in a long time. counter Strike does not count.

8:01 PM
i don't concider cod 'good'
but thanks

lolburn
why not just wait?

@djsmiley2k why not wait forever? if I wait until I'm 93 years old I can get a Macbook that's 10000x faster than what I have now
you have to make a buying decision at some point, and I did

We really need cheap consumer 10GbE switches, considering that home Internet connections are approaching one gigabit and 802.11ad can do more than 1 Gbps in real-world conditions.
When you have wireless networking protocols that can operate faster than a typical wired connection, you have a problem.

@bwDraco It's called USB-C. In theory the only thing that should prevent 10 GB networking over a USB-C patch cable is software...?
Gen2 is plenty fast; in fact, it's 10 Gb

8:27 PM
USB 3.1 Gen 2, sure. But consumer Ethernet has stagnated. Aquantia is changing all this by bringing enterprise-class multi-gigabit Ethernet to the consumer.
There are already several motherboards out there with Aquantia AQtion 5GbE and 10GbE NICs.
We just need the switches to go with them.
USB is meant for short-distance connections to peripherals, not IP networking.
Gigabit Ethernet is quite literally bottlenecking 802.11ad.

you've missed something
1Gb per computer, fine
but on the switch that's then handling multiple Gb on hte backbone
10Gb? you're talking of handling upto hundreds, on a 8 port switch...
etc
Also, what needs it, what would actually use it?
Netflix won't.

I don't think anyone outside of the most random, stupidly rural areas ("The Lucky Ones") that have Google Fiber are going to be even sniffing 1 Gbps any time soon, at least in the US

and that's about the most punishing thing most consumers will ever use.
@allquixotic the US is doomed, the rest of the world moved on 5 years ago

that hardware is really for people in first-world countries, like South Korea and Bosnia, which have actually good Internet instead of oppressing the people intentionally by limiting their ability to communicate

On an 8-port switch, you need a 160 Gbps switching fabric to get full speed on every port. That's not cheap.

8:33 PM
I could have gig internet if i wanted to pay for it.
@bwDraco exactly

@djsmiley2k I would pay 5 times more than your provider is asking if I could get it!

@allquixotic errr

take whatever they're asking, multiply by 5 and I'd buy it instantaneously

that'd be 1/3rd of my monthly wage.

I'd pay them $1000 extra to have it installed tomorrow

8:34 PM
lol
what woudl you do with it?

EVERYTHING

@djsmiley2k, allq only has an LTE data connection and does not have good options for wired Internet access where he lives.

oh, that sucks

It's grandfathered unlimited Verizon.

move outta the 3rd world country?

8:36 PM
Well, he lives just outside of Baltimore, MD.

...

@bwDraco actually it's now that and AT&T :P
AT&T has awesome contract terms on their new unlimited plan on Hotspots specifically
you can use however much data you want and you'll never get artificially throttled; they only slow you down if the tower is saturated by deprioritizing your traffic ("network management") after 22 GB

T-Mobile ONE Plus International is also a solid pick.
(I'm on a promotional T-Mobile ONE Plus plan, LTE speeds are fantastic most of the time)

but if every tower is saturated (i'll be supprsied if they aren't), you're screwed

@djsmiley2k I've used 33 GB in 18 days and I'm still getting good speeds
well, "good" for LTE...

8:42 PM
nice
windows updates are a killer eh?

Windows updates, Steam game updates, new Steam games, macOS, watchOS and iOS updates, etc
I'd say about 50% of my traffic is fucking updates
also wtf is High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF) and why haven't I heard of it before Apple's keynote

NIH syndrome!

Yeah. My Steam library isn't exactly huge, but I've dealt with multi-gigabyte downloads. Downloading 50+ GB for big modern games like DOOM took me only an hour or so on a 100 Mbps HFC Internet connection, but for some, that's still too long.

@djsmiley2k actually it was standardized by the MPEG group in 2015; it's apparently patented to hell and is basically a HEVC (H.265) still image, but far from NIH when it seems that pro photo editors and even digital cameras already support it
they're just kinda following along the evolution of the MPEG standards as a patent pool licensee
@bwDraco 50 GB took me 7 hours
I'd be happy with 100 Mbps for the next couple years, but I can't even get that

@allquixotic nope

9:43 PM
nobody in my reality

10:35 PM
has nobody said anything since i posted that video?

wow it must have worked
i just hear a dog faintly barking....
maybe now is a good time to go do my shopping

Bob
11:27 PM
@djsmiley2k we're happy being doomed with the US, thank you very much.
Well that's what the politicians tell us. We should be happy for what we have, of course!
Can't pirate if you have shoddy net! That'll solve it!
Who needs backups anyway?
cloud? what's that
Netflix? You should pay for Foxtel and be glad for it

and relax...
i honestly did feel like i had editted everyone out of my life, the supermarket was empty
