@MylesKeating That's nice in theory, but it honestly doesn't cover that many programs on Windows... many of which are cross-platform ports in the first place :P
VMs are of course the traditional way of doing it, with all the associated downsides.
Maybe I've been spoiled by the *nix idea of containers.
(Yea, I do understand the whole thing is hugely complex, and you guys have been amazing in getting it up in the first place. This is more ... ways to make it better? :P)
Speaking of which - two weeks till Stretch! :D

@allquixotic which reminds me, I kinda ... fell asleep last week --_
~9.5 hours from now would be a good time for me. you?
@Bob pretty early for me, but I haven't been staying up too late, so it could definitely work if I put my phone on max volume
it's not stupid early
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic eh, ~10-11 would work too :P
just... early for a Saturday morning
Bob
Bob
ah
yea, I'm busy for the next 2-3 right now so ...

9.5 hours would be 9 AM for me -- by no means an unacceptable time to wake up; just that if I were allowed to sleep as long as my body wanted, I'd probably sleep until about noon
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic ah. that's about 2am for me, which really depends on the day :P
could be asleep by then, in bed, or still fully awake
no need to wait until then
Bob
Bob
usually the last happens if I was busy in the hours before
for games I can make an exception, then nap at like 6pm :P
Bob
Bob
...like last night. jailbreaking a kindle and all :P
03:32
lol you got a kindle? what kind?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I've had a PW2 for almost two years, rarely used
finally got around to jailbreaking it

(and rebought Windows Internals 7th ed on it, cause the physical book is too big to carry around... probably shouldn't have bought the physical, oh well)
I have the 2013 and 2015 paperwhite laying around somewhere idle; only my mom uses them, and I got her the 2016 Oasis as a present and she loves it
Bob
Bob
I usually read on my phone :P
mostly did the jb cause there's one that currently works for the firmware version I had, and is kept on upgrades, but the new firmware blocks it from installing
was more a 'hmm. I miiiiight want it later...'
@allquixotic how's the new one compare?
also the built-in PDF reader sucks
03:36
@Bob smaller total size, better touchscreen, more PPI, significantly more powerful CPU, slightly faster e-ink rendering (more of a generational improvement), same screen size due to very thin bezels, and comes with an included leather sleeve that has a huge extended battery to manage the ridiculously overpowered SoC vs. the tiny on-board battery
(the SoC is still slower than a phone's, but for a Kindle reader it's enormous)
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic hm. how's the included web browser? :P

Q: Can't access Embedded Web Server on HP Officejet Pro 8630: "System Error"

bwDracoMy HP Officejet Pro 8630 has started giving me this error when I try to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS): System Error An error has occurred. A network reset did not help, Furthermore, the printer hung while I ran a factory reset from the Settings menu, forcing me to manually pow...

@Bob still "experimental", mainly due to the frequent small changes in modern web pages (scrolling, dynamic functionality) being horrible when matched with slow e-ink
Printer is still giving me this error. Trying a manual firmware update...
also it's nowhere near as good as a modern WebKit or Mozilla based browser in terms of feature-set
I'm willing to bet it's intentional
otherwise AT&T wouldn't provide free WhisperSync 3G service to all these Kindles

@allquixotic thankfully the ones I read are mostly plain text but iirc scrolling was annoying
I don't think I had a page down option/button :/
anyway. afk. I'll wake you in about 10h :P
03:57
@Bob whenever you're available around 9h from now would be fine
@Avery Never heard of it. Appears to be some low-cost solution for developing regions.
For a while, the 750 EVO was like this, too, before it launched as a full retail product worldwide.
Hmm... so it seems to be the predecessor to the 750 EVO.
Hey!
My 10th grade results are coming out in 20 minutes, and I am not looking forward to it
This... is going a bit overboard. Liquid-cooled PSU?
Requires an existing custom loop, though.
Interesting. With a liquid cooling system installed, the maximum output is boosted from 1200W to 1400W.
(most PSUs can operate beyond their rated wattage, but only for brief periods of time)

@bwDraco Is there an error log or error code available?
Nothing.
@bwDraco Tried multiple browsers?
I did. Same thing happened in Microsoft Edge.
@bwDraco Huh, is there a hardware reset switch?

the fact that the factory reset helped might absolve the browser...
@bwDraco Try a different network perhaps?

Journeyman Geek We have two bobs at the moment. Bob (with the fox avatar) is a long time user, and bob, with the green avatar. I'd like to ping Bob, without bothering bob with my pings. Maybe someone asked for a recount
@JourneymanGeek they've been delaying since the 12th of may
@davideneco1 According to my sources, a ThreadRipper 16C/32T (Dies+Package+Testing) cost AMD about 110-120$. 849$-1… https://twitter.com/i/web/status/870388109812355072
Apparently, AMD is getting insane margins on these processors.
yesterday, by bwDraco
AMD has the margins to do this. It's been reported that they're getting 80+% yield and the die is less than 200 mm^2, so Ryzen isn't all that expensive to manufacture.
(via WCCFtech)
07:40
This is the real headline: that AMD is turning a massive profit on every Ryzen processor sold.
Because AMD's engineers cleverly designed the architecture to easily scale out. Infinity Fabric is AMD's trump card, a veritable crown jewel in their semiconductor IP.
Due to Twitter's message limit, I post this link to explain AMD strategy: http://semiaccurate.com/forums/showpost.php?p=290705&postcount=594
> At AMD HQ are still talking about the prices, however this should be the final price (AMD is lowering the 1800X price in order to sell an entry level ThreadRipper 12C/24T @ about 500$). The main problems of this platform are the mainboards (Very expensive) and the RAMs (Also very expensive ... 4 channels).
Expensive motherboards. Probably not avoidable due to the sheer size of the socket (4,094 pins can't possibly be cheap) as well as the need to support 8 DIMMs and 64 PCIe lanes.
For reference...
I lol'd so much when I see people complaining about AMD CPUs production cost ... i7-6950 cost ~170$ i7-7700K cost ~ 60$ etc
These are all rumors, so take them with a big grain of salt, but chances are good that AMD has a real winner on their hands.
Bob
Bob
"a real winner on their hands" you said that last time. And the time before. And the time before.
Ultimately, I'm waiting for benchmarks.

www.tomshardware.com/news/tex-yoda-ii-mechanical-keyboard-trackball,34645.html
I am vaguely thinking that is super neat
So, I have serious doubts Threadripper will perform at anywhere near the same level as Intel's new HEDT processors, especially given that Intel has the better uarch, faster clocks, and a redone cache structure that further increases IPC. Threadripper's MCM design also brings up potential NUMA issues. However, AMD's lower prices are putting pressure on Intel. Competition is good.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek state mandated... oh that :S
@Bob the joke is. It isn't.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco that'd be interesting to see on a server but still kinda meh for home
though I wouldn't mind seeing some variant of Ryzen replace Avoton :P
@JourneymanGeek it isn't?

@JourneymanGeek trackball? m8, that ain't a trackball

What's the difference between CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive boot and UEFI boot from apparently same device?
@GypsySpellweaver chances are it's doable
@Boris_yo Whether or not to use the UEFI checking on the booted media.
@JourneymanGeek Probably. But I'd rather have it up front when getting the KDB, than have to wait for it.

@DavidPostill Are you online? Need help with some batch-fu
This replaces 22 with ": set postText=!postText:%%22="!
How do I make it replace it with !?
Bob
Bob
simple answer: you don't
complex answer: you... don't?
(I remember trying that once upon a time. Almost tore my hair out over a couple hours...)
I think end result was a funny mix of delayed and non-delayed expansion...
(so probably something like set postText=%postText:%%22=!%)
but that'd probably trip over the param var
see also: reasons to not use batch/cmd
use a placeholder replacement char and pray to whichever god you believe in that a real string won't contain it
...wait. do you have 22 params?!
wtf
and poeople tell me i should use a real language :D
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k you should
batch is dumb design
PHP is almost malicious design
that said, it probably would handle this situation better
probably
@Rahul2001 Huh? What exactly are you trying to do?
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill presumably replace some unknown param with an exclamation mark
oh I remember now
set foobarbatchisdumb=!
set blah=!blah:%%22=%foobarbatchisdumb%!
I think that might work
idk
though there's equal chance that delayed expansion still sees the extra excl
in fact it probably does
yea use a placeholder replacement char :P
11:36
if not defined foo set foo=!
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill uh. I think he's trying to do the equiv of postText.Replace(args[22], "!")
set postText=!postText:%22=guisFASaDSasd!
set postText=%postText:guisFASaDSasd=!%
completely dumb but it's probably the only feasible way
and yes guisFASaDSasd in this context is just a facesmash random placeholder string
that's ... rather unlikely ... to appear in the real text
shrug I still don't understand what he is trying to do. A before and after string would help. Along with the appropriate parts of the batch file.
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill hm? I thought the C# pseudocode would've been clear enough :P though that's just my guess

Q: What does the Intel Management Engine do?

Giorgian Borca-TasciucI've heard many complaints about the Intel Management Engine by Anti-DRM activists, but what does it actually do?

I'm reading the article about this which i find hard to understand
can someone clarify this line of the article: The ME firmware is verified by a secret boot ROM embedded in the chipset that first checks that the SHA256 checksum of the public key matches the one from the factory, and then verifies the RSA signature of the firmware payload by recalculating it and comparing to the stored signature.
I've read it 4-5 times but i'm still not getting how it is verified
@djsmiley2k ... that sucks....
@DavidPostill replace all occurances of %21 with exclamation points in the string postText
12:34
@djsmiley2k Telling by your avatar you seem to be the happiest SU member here. Every time I see you smilin'...
@Bob I have Macrium boot CD-ROM. I wonder if it matters whether you boot it from UEFI or legacy.
@Boris_yo :D
13:22
@Bob no, I'm decoding POST data. ! becomes %22
@Rahul2001 This set postText=!postText:%%22=^^!! should work but doesn't :/
@DavidPostill :(
You need delayed expansion (to properly process the %22) but then the documented escape for ! which is ^^! doesn't work inside a variable search/replace expression :/
13:38
I left a comment on @jeb's post on variable search and replace, let's see if he can come up with something
The only workaround is to replace twice. First time replace %22 with some guaranteed unique string with delayed expansion on. Second time turn delayed expansion off and replace unique string with !.
@DavidPostill hm, I think that shouldn't be a problem.
@DavidPostill endlocal is the same as setlocal disabledelayedexpansion?
@Rahul2001 Here you go:
@echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
set postText=foo%%22bar%%22baz
echo %postText%
set postText=!postText:%%22=uncledavid!
echo !postText!
setlocal disabledelayedexpansion
set postText=%postText:uncledavid=!%
echo %postText%
endlocal
> test
foo%22bar%22baz
foouncledavidbaruncledavidbaz
foo!bar!baz
>
Note the clever use of the unique string uncledavid ;P
@Rahul2001 Yes. But will also throw away and local variables ...
13:46
@DavidPostill I can again use delayed expansion after this operation on this string?
@Rahul2001 Yes.
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
echo %postText%
set postText=!postText:%%21=uncledavid!
echo !postText!
setlocal disabledelayedexpansion
set postText=%postText:uncledavid=!%
echo %postText%
setlocal disabledelayedexpansion
@DavidPostill this should work, yes?
And yet I get this:
hi%21
hiuncledavid
hi%21
This baffles me
Eh, I gtg. Be back in an hour or so.
I'm having serious trust issues with Microsoft right now
@Rahul2001 That should work :/
If you're going to create a scripting language and ship it with millions billions of computers, at least make the effort of creating a decent one
@DavidPostill ...but it doesn't :(
@echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
set postText=hi%%21
echo %postText%
set postText=!postText:%%21=uncledavid!
echo !postText!
setlocal disabledelayedexpansion
set postText=%postText:uncledavid=!%
echo %postText%
endlocal
Thats works :)
14:10
@DavidPostill Thanks! Will check in a bit, gtg
Bob
Bob
14:30
@DavidPostill you stole my 'technique'! :P
@Rahul2001 ...in other words, you should learn powershell! I know a guy who'd love to teach you...
@Bob lol. I'm thinking of posting on SO to see if there is a better solution from stackoverflow.com/users/1012053/dbenham
> Hobbies - Pushing Windows batch programming to its limits,
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill I spent a good bit of time looking for one a few years back. Wasn't really worth the effort.
@Boris_yo If you're not installing an OS, it doesn't matter that much. Many boot CDs don't support UEFI yet.
> the documented escape for ! which is ^^! doesn't work inside a variable search/replace expression
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill that in itself is incredibly ugly :P
So you can't have % on the left and ! on the right in a variable search/replace
Bob
Bob
14:35
like, ^^ gets replaced with ^ at parse time, and then ^! is seen at execution time...
@Bob Except it doesn't work
Bob
Bob
as @JourneymanGeek would put it, batch grew organically
@Bob I wouldn't care if it is ugly as long as it works
much like mould..... ;p
@DavidPostill elegance in a solution is important too.
Especially if you need to maintain it
@Bob yeah. mushrooms and bovine excrement spring to mind.

Hi folks. Had a nightmarish day trying to report that error on the product listings page to Amazon. But maybe most of you weren't here when I talked about it.
hm. bother
I think I left my laptop charger at work
15:20
@JourneymanGeek The company VENOM specifically gives two chargers with its laptops for this very reason
@Rahul2001 I was debating buying a spare ;p
Seems sensible, to keep one for home and one at work
annoyingly only harvey norman seems to stock it and there's not one near enough for me to nip over with my current lack of any time
@JourneymanGeek internet, dude

ask my brother to watch the dog, and buy one
or use my spare laptop till monday
or not use a PC in bed and go the cat to sleep
15:27
@JourneymanGeek sleep? What's that he says? Can't be talking about him going to sleep, he wouldn't be a geek then, must be talking about his laptop screen...
Wait, why is there no "lol" as a response to that? Did he actually go to sleep? Oh no... This can't be good...
THE MOD IS ASLEEP! MISCHIEF TIME! evil laugh
@JourneymanGeek What buying a dog would benefit you?
@DavidPostill is a coconspirator anyway! Why do you think we made him a mod? smirk
Who am I even blabbering away to?
Nobody here but us chickens!
Yes, yes, chickens! I'm definitely not a robot! Nosir, no! Only us chickens here! 🐔 🐔 🐔 🤖
Would it be fair to say that most of the people here are regulars? It reminds me a little of Cheers. Except without the alcohol. And more computers.
15:37
0NLY CH1K3N$
@FaheemMitha it would be fair to say most of us are regulars, yes. Cheers? Idk what that is.
@Rahul2001 That was a TV show, once upon a time.
> ROBOT APOCALYPSE TRIGGER ACTIVATED! Chickens are cool!
Well, also an imaginary bar, within the show. A sitcom, to be more precise.
Alcohol!! 🍺 🍺 🍷 🍷 🍾 🍾 Unfortunately, I need to wait for 9 years to be able to drink legally.
15:42
@Rahul2001 Wait, you can only drink at TWENTY FIVE?!?!?!?!
@ThatRussianGuy yeah. Goddamn Indian laws.
And they only let you look at porn when you're 52 years old?
Indian laws?
@Rahul2001 probably for the best, most people are retarded about alcohol before mid-20s...
Wow, the drinking age in India is 25?
15:44
lies
I thought it depended on the particular drink
Yeah, milk and water no problem at any age
I was thinking wine vs. beer; someone told me one of those can be had earlier in some places
@BenN It (like the US) all depends on which state you live in.
@Rahul2001 I'm puzzled. Since when does anyone in India pay any attention to the laws?
15:46
The legal drinking age in India and the laws which regulate the sale and consumption of alcohol vary significantly from state to state. In India, consumption of alcohol is prohibited in the states of Gujarat, Bihar, Manipur and Nagaland as well as the union territory of Lakshadweep. The Kerala government has planned to implement almost full prohibition of hard liquor in a phased manner, which will take 10 years starting from third quarter of 2014. All other Indian states permit alcohol consumption but fix a legal drinking age, which ranges at different ages per region. In some states, the legal...
Ah
> All other Indian states permit alcohol consumption but fix a legal drinking age, which ranges at different ages per region. In some states, the legal drinking age can be different for different types of alcoholic beverage.
@FaheemMitha ouch
@DavidPostill Well, that narrows down where @Rahul2001 lives by quite a bit.
It's not hard
15:48
@jokerdino Speaking from first-hand experience.
He kinda already mentioned where he lives.
Yeah, but for those of us who like a bit of mystery and prefer for people to be "over that way, geographically" rather than knowing exact coordinates....
@DavidPostill for example is "up north" as far as I'm concerned....
I didn't know that Kerala plans to ban alcohol. I'm sure that will end well.
@Mokubai lol. my profile narrows it down a bit. ;p
> Kerala has India's highest per capita alcohol consumption at more than eight litres per person yearly.
15:51
Too precise. You are a northerner. :P
No barmaids in Punjabi pubs then ...
