@NathanOsman Can your API retrieve past messages, or only listen for new ones?
Also, are we going for real-time notifications like text messages?
If so, wouldn't that require keeping the CPU awake at all times?
And if not,
Then we'll have to get a bunch of messages after the device wakes from sleep

sooooo I may or may not have accidentally done sudo rm -rf /var
nothing is broken yet
is there anything I need to look out for?
haven't rebooted. Should I do something before that happens?

@towc I have no context here to answer your question

what should I expect to stop working?

If what?

everything in /var is gone

2:25 PM
Oh

well, I had this: rm: cannot remove ‘var/tmp’: Device or resource busy
so not everything

Well, /var contains files to which the system writes data during the course of its operation.
@towc Did you run the rm as root?

yeah..

Oooohhh...

@towc do you have a system backup image ?

2:29 PM
@towc Here's a post from a guy who accidentally deleted /avr as root: linuxforums.org/forum/newbie/99762-deleted-var-directory.html

nope

@towc check history to see what you actually did

shame on you :D

@cl-netbox don't ask. always assume someone did ;-)

I was trying to free up some space and /var/log seemed like a good place
except I just pressed enter

2:30 PM
@towc mysql, printing, anything that uses log files.

@Rinzwind experience shows : the opposite is true ! ;P

@AndroidDev we can use GCM/FCM for push notifications, but we'll need to set up an Azure server or something

@TheWanderer I think AWS EC2 might be cheaper
You can get it free for a year
@TheWanderer But before we go there, could we setup a temporary VM or something just to get it working?

I mean, I use the machine as a normal user
haven't found a real problem yet, that others have described

Well the files may be cached in memory

2:33 PM
@towc so why did you remove the /var directory as root then ? :D

@cl-netbox dont ask :=D

Accidents happen...

3 mins ago, by towc
I was trying to free up some space and /var/log seemed like a good place

@AndroidDev nope. that aint an accident. making mistakes when root is not an accident.

I once accidentally deleted ~/ on a VM.. good thing I had a snapshot :D

2:34 PM
@AndroidDev nice ! :) hahaha :D

@Rinzwind What is it then?
Stupidity?

@AndroidDev Malice.

ok, so stuff like locate doesn't work anymore

@towc best would be to reinstall the system ! :)

nor updatedb

2:35 PM
@towc yes that too
want me to make a full picture

@cl-netbox so back up everything on a somewhere and put it back in when needed?
@Rinzwind plz do, actually :/

@towc yes - exactly :)

/var holds
backups cache crash lib local lock log mail opt run spool tmp www

@Rinzwind It only has www if you have a webserver

cache: installing software is not possible

2:37 PM
right, apt-get is not doing stuff

lib: that's where mysql stores databases

can I fix that?
don't really care about mysql

log: anything that uses logs but that are likely to get recreated on reboot (it you can reboot >:) )

yeah, whole purpose was to get rid of all logs, I knew that was safe

mail: obviously about local mail
spool: printing

2:38 PM
don't care about either

@Rinzwind IF ! yes, that's the magic question ! :D

@towc BUT you do NOT use rm to clear out /var/log/, You use "> /var/log/mysql.log" as an example.

but but but
ok

no buts ;-)

I'll do that next time
anyway, if there's an easy-ish way to fix everything that I still need, that's fine
how do I go about fixing apt-get?

2:40 PM
@towc thing is : damage is done ! reinstall the system ... takes less time than any "repair" attempts ! :)

I agree with Boxy
do a re-install WITHOUT formatting the partitions.

right now, I feel like I might screw up a lot more if I try to reinstall the system rather than fixing what's broken

(use "something else" and only mount them)

@towc also : learn from the disaster and create system backups with clonezilla regularly from now on ! :)

I have a torrent site for my backups >:D
(only file I do not want to remove on my system would be my password safe and that one is backupped to a google drive once a week)

2:43 PM
@towc the opposite is true ! :)

well, thing is that I really don't need much to work again, I think

I agree with Boxy *2

I might be very wrong, but it could be worth trying

@towc do you have another system at hand?

yeah

2:44 PM
You could copy/paste /var from the other system

I could do that

(make a tar of /var so permissions are kept)

I'll try

now for the kicker....

@Rinzwind nice :D will give it a try and copy my fedora /var to ubuntu ! :D

2:45 PM
you can only be sure if it works when you reboot ...
and if it does not ... The End...

oh fuck it I'll just reinstall

Q: How to remove logout timer in phpmyadmin

Mile PanicI accidentally set timer to log me out of phpmyadmin to 0. Now when i log in, it logs me out immediately. I purged phpmyadmin, and after i reinstalled it, it still does the same thing

lol

@Rinzwind :D :D :D

@cl-netbox answered :=)

@Rinzwind upvoted ! :D
@Rinzwind change the 0 and save the file ... to what ? :D

2:49 PM
In doubt though. Might be an old answer and no longer valid :P
@cl-netbox anything not 0?

@Rinzwind edit the answer to that :)

why? you already upvoted :=-)

@Rinzwind you are used to getting upvotes immediately and unfortunately I saw a 0 ! so I thought I'll change it to plus one ... :D :D :D

mv rinzwind /home/ && wait 1.5 hours

wth I can't find debian nonfree installation images
oh nvm

Q: Getting "command not found" when trying to run rvm command as sudo

DaveI'm trying to reinstall Ruby on my Ubuntu 14.04 machine but I'm confused about how I need to set up my PATH variable or other things. @NathanOsman Firebase might let us do authentication with Google and such!
also
you don't need a server for FCM

Is back.
Oops. Spoke too soon.
Gotta do an errand real quick.

wow

So.
Regarding a server, fret not.
I have many of them that we can use.

we don't need one though

Yes we do.

5:12 PM
I'm going to push the project to GH
we can send notifications from the SDK

Right - and they must be sent by a program... running on a server :P

Can a moderator trigger a comment-not for extended discussion/move to chat for the comments in this answer askubuntu.com/a/920197/29012

@NathanOsman how would that work?

@TheWanderer Something somewhere needs to be pulling the data from the Stack Exchange API. FCM isn't going to do that.

ah OK

5:13 PM
Sure, they might handle delivery but the data needs to get to them somehow.

but how do we do that per-user?

For chat, we will need to run WebSockets from the server with their credentials.
So my idea is that we charge a very small nominal fee for this.
$1/m or perhaps even less.

@L.D.James Flag the last comment in the series for mod attention, if you haven't already.

@NathanOsman so you're saying notifications would be IAPs?

Can you do recurring IAPs?

5:15 PM
yeah
subscriptions

Sure.

That seems reasonable.
But.

Thanks! I'll do that. I had already flagged tne the answer with that description a number of comments ago.

I also added you as a collaborator to ChatExchange Firebase

5:15 PM
Cool.

@L.D.James Okay, that would get it too, eventually.

@anonymous2 Thanks!

Other thing you can do is ping a specific moderator like @jokerdino or @terdon.

@NathanOsman So did you get my ping last night that I got it running in background service?

@NathanOsman IAPs are literal hell though. I can work on adding that, since I can probably just copy my code from System UI Tuner

5:17 PM
But maybe hold off on that.
Since we don't even have the standard implementation working yet.

yeah we should get the notifications working first lol

Nor do we have the server side code for it.
@AndroidDev Yes, I did. Sorry, I was late getting in last night.

and we still don't actually have a working app, with or without notifications

True.

hint hint

5:18 PM
I'll pull your changes soon and take a look.

oke
lots of TODO stuff since I just copied the code AS told me to use for Firebase

We aren't in a race though... so I wasn't expecting that we would focus all our time and energy on this.

I get obsessed with things

@TheWanderer Did you see the screenshot I posted last night?

Q: Ftrace time duration

Vishal KhopkarI echoed 1 to tracing_on in /sys/kernel/debug/tracing directory and echoed 0 again after a second. However, the timestamp of the first entry is 216.852 and that of the last entry is 234.136 giving me a total time span of the run of about 18 seconds. How is that possible? And I've tried this many ...

5:19 PM
@AndroidDev I think so

@anonymous2 hi?

@jokerdino hue*

Temperature here dropped to 17 and humidity climbed to 41%.

wu

@TheWanderer Basically I got it to pull in new messages from this room and display them in a text view

5:19 PM
@L.D.James @jokerdino this

@AndroidDev oh nice
pls implement :p

@TheWanderer Should I create a new fork for it? Since we're probably not going to end up doing it the way I am currently?

@L.D.James Done

@jokerdino Thanks!

:)

5:22 PM
@AndroidDev ask @NathanOsman
I am not one for organization

("r" comes next)

(actually BLEP comes next lol - it's bring your pet to work day and a cute dog just blep'd at me)
3

blepeurgh

@AndroidDev yes, maybe a fork is best.

tries to blep, fails, trips, and lands on the ground and BLORPS instead, before becoming a shapeless blob on the floor

@NathanOsman Office of Patent Quality Review?

5:28 PM
Sure :P

What does it stand for in this context?

Nothing I think.

@AndroidDev it's the alphabet smarty

It's a joke, Potato's can be used as an extremely weak battery by utilizing a chemical reaction, but they cannot act as a Processor, Motherboard or any other hardware. — Jack Oct 6 '15 at 10:34
The potato is a lie? THE POTATO IS A LIE?!?!?! — qasdfdsaq Oct 6 '15 at 10:35
Lol.

5:42 PM
@anonymous2 Potato's what can be used as a battery?

@terdon I guess. I suppose they must be slightly acidic.

@terdon Yeah. I made a potato clock once :D I think it also works with Coke, but I can't remember

Nah, I was just hung up on the possessive there. Potato's instead of Potatoes.

Potato's can. The can with potato.

@terdon Ah, gotcha.

5:44 PM
@jokerdino Ah! Of course :)
I think someone has read the Long Earth series:
The Long Earth is the first novel in a collaborative science fiction series by British authors Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter. == Plot summary == The "Long Earth" is a (possibly infinite) series of parallel worlds that are similar to Earth, which can be reached by using an inexpensive device called a "Stepper". The "close" worlds are almost identical to "our" Earth (referred to as "Datum Earth"), others differ in greater and greater details, but all share one similarity: on none are there, or have there ever been, Homo sapiens - although the same cannot be said of earlier hominid spec...
The inexpensive device is a potato.

Obligatory:

ew
@NathanOsman stop posting potatos and make the app work :p

@NathanOsman Is that a stepper?

No, it's Potato OS (GLaDOS in a potato).

@TheWanderer Hey, we're all volunteering our time to work on that kind of stuff, so I don't think you can criticize him for not jumping on it ASAP
:)
Plus, unlike most developers, @NathanOsman actually has a life, right? :D

5:50 PM
I do my best :D

@NathanOsman potatOS

Whatever.

@AndroidDev He used to. And then his government outlawed drones. Now all he does is code.

Lol.
I grew up an introvert and only recently managed to overcome that.
So I am slowly developing a social life.

lol

5:55 PM
@TheWanderer You need a glass of water?

looks at starwall Okay, so @NathanOsman is a banana, @Zanna said she was a baby... what's next? @ThomasWard Is a ravenous wolf desirous of munching on low quality posts?

no that's @KazWolfe

@AndroidDev I consume the souls of those we crush but eh
i'm not a wolf :P
that's @KazWolfe

But he's Wilf now

5:56 PM
Awoooo!

@TheWanderer Ah.

@AndroidDev they just have the same avatar

@TheWanderer oh, whoops :D

tsk

wolf with one i.

5:59 PM
@ThomasWard BTW, your profile picture is aweosme :)

I see alllll

Wait a sec @KazWolfe nuked a Linux install live?

6:03 PM
@NathanOsman what for ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

randomly disappears

YOU SUMMONED ME TO THE MORTAL PLANE?
(1) Yes, I do love eating low quality posts for breakfast.
2
(2) I am not Wilf.
2
(3) I did nuke a Linux install live.
2
(4) Thomas Ward is not a wolf.
2
(5) Thomas Ward certainly is not Wilf.
2

(6) Star wall abuse is still evil and will be squished into starry mush
2

I guess you missed this message:
May 23 at 17:44, by Nathan Osman
The starwall has been breached.

6:16 PM
So to recap: Thomas Ward is not me because he is not a wolf (though we do act similarly and both love breakfasts of low quality posts). I am not Wilf because I have a different name.

i'm the one who pinned it lol

Once it has been breached... there is no turning back.
What has been starred cannot be un-starred.

well
it can

(6.1) I did not do that.

but... we just don't.
usually.

6:17 PM
Only the illusion of un-starring. Deep down, we know the stars will still exist in our hearts.
Their memory never to be forgotten.

(7) Nathan Osman may not awoo. He is not a wolf.
3

unless your heart is computerized, like mine, in which case the memory record of the star was deleted.

Maybe I need coffee.

NOW WHAT'LL YOU DO LOL.

\o

6:20 PM
o/

I found a new name for my sock
Ave Wilfe
for all your wilf needs

o.O

I DIDN'T DO IT.
Blame the smiling yellow blob.

Oh hey, I hit 50k!

Grats!

6:28 PM
You get sick for a week and all the good stuff happens!

@terdon gratz :=)

Coming to getcha!
:P

Hey, I think I fixed the Qt issue.

@terdon \o/

@KazWolfe that's specist

6:31 PM
@TheWanderer Does it look like I care?

@terdon I could spend 50k rep on downvoting you and we'd still have a 100k gap >:-D

@KazWolfe idk I can't see you.. or can I ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

6:47 PM
@terdon is it good stuff, or is it chaotic carnage... hmm
@Rinzwind you... could...
... but that'd end badly
For you, I mean :)

For that, terdon should have 50000 posts.

@jokerdino or 25000 answers.

@TheWanderer Wow, creep.

lol

50,000 answers because Q downvotes are free
but terdon has only written 834 surviving answers so far. Lightweight

6:58 PM
scrub
damn normies
