Q: Why does On Stranger Tides have a different title in the UK?

IG_42Promotional posters and websites for cinemas in the UK are referring to the new Pirates of the Caribbean film by the subtitle "Salazar's Revenge". What is the reason for this change? @SQB, there's no guidance in those exerpts? You've literally just duplicated the Wiki into your excerpts. The wiki's are also incredibly short and effectively useless.

SQB
There is guidance in the excerpts "use together with [pirates-of-the-caribbean]".
But yes, the tag wiki itself could be expanded upon.

funny, I was just browsing the closed question/speculation about the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 ending scene when you posted your message about the tag wiki.

Also can we calm down with the edits? The first 10 posts are now PoC

Q: How much did Mcgonagall know about Snape?

anakindchosenone05192005A follow-up question of What did Professor McGonagall know about the Order of the Phoenix? It seems before the battle of hogwarts, Mcgonagall faced Snape into brief battle. Snape escapes as a coward, as Mcgonagall shouted. Now did she know that Snape planned this? It seems to me that she dosen't ...

@Babelfish Whether Snape escapes as a coward is pretty subjective nodnod

SQB
Snape is by far the most tragic character in Harry Potter. And the Marauders were an important factor in who Snape became.
Side note: Snape is obviously a nerd, like Harry Potter, who does not take after his father, an obvious jock.
But contrast Snape with Pettigrew. Snape had the strength of character to not submit to the Marauders, while Pettigrew, seeing the example made of Snape, did.
Snape had the courage to withstand them, while we see Pettigrew cowardly following the most powerful faction — the Marauders while in school, Voldemort when he rose to power.

that's a weird question
what does Jonesy contribute to the Alien franchise?

Can we please undelete this and maybe this? I don’t think we should be deleting merely wrong answers.
Our recent discussions have recommended caution: “ If you can’t come up with a good reason for deletion don’t do it. Don’t stretch to delete. Downvote bad answers and comment.”
As have our past ones: “’Really wrong answers’ might fall under the first point, since improving them requires a radical change, but I’m not so sure of that. I’d recommend a downvote and a comment indicating why it’s wrong.”
In particular, take the first answer:
“Maybe Jedi came from a shortened or plural form of Jedediah, which is the name given to Solomon by God at his birth. Solomon is arguably the wisest author in the bible. As in Star Wars, the Jedi must be wise in their ways in the battle between good and evil.”

If the community has voted to delete them, the community has spoken, no?

@Gallifreyan If the community votes to undelete them, they also have spoken. ;-=

7:37 PM
@Adamant There may be more of this so called "symbolism" in Star Wars, it doesn't make this stuff any more useful.

Personally, I think it’s a little “not on” to not delete the answer that was the subject of the meta question (whose answer advised caution and probably not deleting bad answers), while deleting the other answers that follow the same principle.
If our meta discussions say “you probably shouldn’t delete wrong answers; downvote and comment,” we should probably respect that, just as we shouldn’t close (or reopen) questions against meta consensus.
@Gallifreyan Aren’t you on Literature? How can you dislike symbolism? ;-=

Q: Were the spiders in Mirkwood and also the Eagles intelligent?

If they could talk with purpose and in a meaningful manner I would tend to think so. The same goes for the Eagles which several times intervened, eg savin...

Can we rename "intelligent" to sentient in the question posted by the Babelfish? The OP themselves states that they are talking about Tolkiens understanding of sentience, not the modernen concept of intelligence. Frankly, I found the title to be misleading.

uh, sure?

@Narusan It may be of small benefit, but it doesn’t hurt the question.

So why not?

Dang, Adamant won.

If the poster complains, though, it will probably be switched back.

Was just gonna say the same

are there special LotR-only definitions of "intelligent" or "sentient" that I'm not aware of? the terms are fuzzy enough in normal English it doesn't seem like it'd matter

7:52 PM
@Adamant well, user1411 complained about the same...

@Narusan Actually, it looks like they’re complaining about the opposite.

Serious danger-cat floof:

I expect they, being a connoisseur of old science fiction short stories, would prefer “sapient.”

honestly, that looks like a cat rolling his eyes at our nitpicking

7:54 PM
@Ixrec Yes. See this answer.

@Narusan So, should we be using the term “rational”? ;-=

Less serious danger-cat floof:

I’ve made the change to “sentient,” but if a dispute arises it’s something that the author and those who prefer different words will have to work out.

Sure. It is just important that there is a serious distinction between "intelligent" and "sentient". No one is gonna argue against the fact the danger-cat floof is intelligent, but to Tolkien, sentient beings have a soul. And the core of the question was whether eagles and spiders have the soul-thingy that makes them sentient.
@Adamant Regarding this

oh, WOW
I just earned the Reversal badge on Meta.

7:58 PM
By "sentient" did you mean intelligent? I don't think anyone doubts that eagles and other vertebrates are sentient in real life, let alone Tolkien's fiction. — user14111 7 mins ago

LOL

@Adamant Something went wrong ^

@Gallifreyan considering Narusan's linked answer explicitly states animals are not Tolkein-sentient, the wording of this comment makes it sound like he's not talking about the same Tokein-specific meanings of the words

@Gallifreyan No he isn't @lxrec. I guess I was reading what I wanted to read and my brain just exchanged sentient und intelligent in the first sentence for me. Thanks for making me look like an idiot :P. I apologise, I should have read the comment more carefully before using it to support my thesis...

@Ixrec Actually, having thought about it a bit, I think it would be fitting to use Babelfish for all the cross-stack feeds, and pick another character for our main feed. Using Marvin for our Meta feed still feels good, though.

Meta’s fairly good for Reversal because people tend to post very unpopular suggestions.
Thus, although the main site has over 15 times the questions of meta, it has less than 3 times the number of Reversal badges.
In fact, I feel like at one point there was a suggestion on the main meta that the Reversal badge should be retired for all non-meta sites.
