Morning

I made the correct decision by going to pinal's session
Pure comedy

@TomV details please :)

On mobile so it's hard to type a lot of stories

Is there a video recording, perhaps?

"I don't like people who say it depends. It's something scared people use to hide"
4
"just run it in production. You won't see performance problems in Dev anyway so how else will you know if it helps"
7

9:01 AM
oh my :D
@Philᵀᴹ nice car, I've a 335i (E93)
the consumption though.. is on the opposite end :D

"don't think too much I will give you a script" -- my favourite so far
5

The first two seem to me consistent with each other. Both are about not being scared.
Don't be a chicken. Don't say "It depends" and don't be afraid to run things in production.

@AndriyM haha, I am currently planning a talk about the exact opposite (aka the Database Destroyer) - the very first question to the public planned has only one good answer and it's 'it depends'

9:29 AM
@Marian Nice

9:49 AM
@dezso It might be funny to have 10 questions in the end - all with the same answer ;)

10:11 AM
In DBMS, does entity refer to a row? Because one row contains all the attributes of a specific object. So is a table an entity type as it is the set of all the entities that have the same attributes?

10:34 AM
@TomV wut? yeah, who needs to think
@Philᵀᴹ a bit old, but really spectacular when full throttle :) me loves it

@Marian our perception of old seems rather different :D

@dezso why? :D
how old's yours?

@Marian I don't own a BMW, haha
otherwise, it used to be 15 years old until it stopped cooperating
and that car was not so old according to me
a BMW 507, that's old

ha, I see :)
was thinking that compared to Phil's, which is a new breed of electricals, mine is an old style gas guzzler
@dezso that's gorgeous

@Marian one thing I like in Berlin (well, Germany in general) that you have the chance of running into random classic cars here and there
(and, in reality, a BMW NN02 is also old)

1 hour later…
12:10 PM
@Marian he's just catering to an audience. Avoiding technical details a few trying to keep the explanation simple
I'm sure there's a big market for that

@TomV apparently, as the attendance in his presentations shows ;)

I just want his autograph for Paul

1:12 PM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ good catch on that UPDATE
and they are lazy to read the docs

@TomV What's the overall event?

Techorama
My manager thought I should attend but I didn't find an interesting session today

today is full day sessions?
"This session will be a demo heavy session with a pop quiz at every hour to keep attendees attentive"
Make us proud!

1:37 PM
@TomV Shush

In which DB are DDL triggers 'ON ALL SERVER' created?

@McNets SQL Server?

None, they're a server level object

@AndriyM YES

Server Objects > Triggers in SSMS

1:42 PM
Was that a quiz? :)

Q: Trigger to change Database collation on creation

Rafael PiccinelliI'm trying to create a Trigger, to alter collation of a database on its creation, but how can I catch the database name to use inside the trigger? USE master GO CREATE TRIGGER trg_DDL_ChangeCOllationDatabase ON ALL SERVER FOR CREATE_DATABASE AS declare @databasename varchar(200) set @databasenam...

morning heapers

morning

I remembered read something about EVENTDATA, but @sp_BlitzErik has shot first.
morning

1:46 PM
I'm glad it's not a "it depends" answer
can't trust people who say things like that
you really can't make this stuff up

@McNets I misunderstood the question, sorry. Read that as "What DBMS...", so I answered with "SQL Server".

hahaha, i only had it that quickly because i have db level functions to prevent my from creating blitz* procs in user databases
er triggers rather

@AndriyM no worries

@bluefeet morning

Basically I learnt that to DROP a DDL trigger created with ON ALL SERVER you must use the same syntax. DROP TRIGGER <trigger_name> ON ALL SERVER;

1:59 PM
yeah, otherwise (guessing) it gets looked for in the context of whatever database you're in

@sp_BlitzErik thank you

Ooh he saved de best Joke for the end

was it about crossfit?

"I show my customer his list of slow queries but I can't tune them I don't know their business logic'

iktf

2:16 PM
@TomV Wait, are you in his session right now? That is, still in his session? I thought you were talking about a past experience (yesterday or something).

@AndriyM yes I'm still here
I had to force myself to sit it out but I'm still here
@JoeObbish I won a prize!
5
I can't figure out how to upload a picture but it's one of his books

2:32 PM
@TomV You can get it autographed! Preferably with a quote. "To Paul..."

@Forrest I was about to try but he was surrounded by people asking questions and I chickened out
Sorry @Lamak but you already knew I was a failure, right?

@TomV what?
no, I mean...not yet

I failed to get Paul's present

@TomV oh no

2:51 PM
@TomV A literal gold star for you!

@TomV did you get your prize?

Yeah a Joe's to pros book.
For SQL 2012

@TomV ok then. You can still find him in the hall. I mean the event is not finished yet, is it?

No I left. Confused people were asking questions
I guess I can carry it around the next 2 days
But I don't think I'll attend another of his sessions

Q: Help me tune the long-running query

George KI have a problem with the following query executing from the application: DECLARE @p1 INT; SET @p1 = NULL; DECLARE @p2 INT; SET @p2 = 0; DECLARE @p5 INT; SET @p5 = 2 + 4096; DECLARE @p6 INT; SET @p6 = 8193; DECLARE @p7 INT; SET @p7 = 0; EXEC sp_cursorprepexec @p1 OUTPUT, @p2 OUTPUT, ...

The query keeps running for almost 3 hours

Hi @MDCCL Haven't seen you in a while

@TomV I've been quite busy lately, but I've been upvoting a few good posts here and there some times. How are you?

@MDCCL Have been quite busy too, have been a lot less active on the site since a few months, but I'm fine otherwise

This user has edited the post to include the underlying platform, I've nominated to reopen:

Q: Accidentally removed privileges from root user and can't access database

Eric CooksNew to databases and accidently removed privileges from root user; only privileges I currently have are USAGE and PROXY. This is a MySQL database that I access through HeidiSQL. Currenty cannot access my data tables; is there a way to get these privileges restored? Did not create any other user a...

(Was originally closed because they specified only the "HeidiSQL" interface, and not the underlying RDBMS)

@MDCCL I was thinking about you this afternoon when I saw the question you answered bumped to the homepage, another very good answer btw
22
A: Why the term "relation(al)"?

MDCCLFirst of all, I highly recommend the paper in which Dr. Edgar Frank Codd published the definition of the relational framework in 1970, i.e., “A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks” (a milestone in computer science). There, in section entitled 1.1 Introduction, it is stated that:...

@TomV Thank you very much. The question was very interesting and quite well contextualized, so I wanted to share my perspective and provide links to some relevant resources. It's good to know you are fine :)

4 hours later…
10:59 PM
is anyone here going to pass this year?

11:23 PM
@sp_BlitzErik I am

@JoeObbish cool! was thinking
that it might be fun to get dba.se people together for drinks

I'm not a social butterfly but I'm not against the idea of meeting up
I did run into a guy from here at sql saturday in chicago by accident

i'm not either, but it's nice to put faces to names once in a while
i figure once a year can't hurt. heh.

I was trying to find that blog post that brent did about an old pass summit and how no one would talk to him
the point being that my reaction would have been quite different
possibly along the lines of "good"
but I can't find it now for some reason

11:47 PM
i would agree with that
i spent most of the last pass trying to drink alone
heh

well
I don't actually drink, so if no one else shows up you still might end up drinking alone!

i knew there was a reason you're smarter than me

thanks, now I can finally fill out my SE profile
What capacity do you attend pass in? speaker? company rep? learner? unwillingly?
oh, can't forget "networker"

speaker if i get selected, passive attendee otherwise
mostly just skulk around the halls looking for microsoft people to ask about stuff they don't wanna talk about
5

You mean the "ask a PFE" booth?
I've never gone to pass so I've only heard stories
