4:32 PM
Defending: C
(if you post it, they will come...)
(I hope)

okay, then
1: RGB

I'll be back in a couple minutes and I can contribute then

1: not CRT

1: nope

1: not COLOURS?
(or COLORS for you American folk)

4:35 PM
It's COLOUR

Well, this game is just flying along.
Slow down with the clues. I can't keep up!

okay okay, I will pause with the clues until more are cleared up

2. Birthday of Sir Isaac Newton

2: not CHRISTMAS?
(just guessing)

yup, that's it (too easy to guess really)
3. Fleeting, like an arrow?
4. Old-fashioned party wordgame

4:41 PM
Contact 4

4: not CHARADES

ah, bollocks, I just realised 4 is ambiguous

...uncontact 4

ah, thanks, GPR. No, not CHARADES

Wait!
Contact 4 actually

4:42 PM
(might possibly be unambiguous now, but I wouldn't bet on it)

I really can't think of anything else, though I'll probably kick myself.
Pass 4

CELEBRITIES?

ah, no, sorry. I was thinking of the rather obscure CRAMBO.

Never heard of it.

4:43 PM
That was the idea :-)
1. Willing to push fat men in front of runaway train carriages

Contact 1

2: Tomb perhaps?

2: not CATACOMB

(also, I like that clue @GarethMcCaughan)

Not 2

4:45 PM
2: not CRYPT

yes

...pass 1

CONSEQUENTIALIST

Assuming it's a CC?

@GarethMcCaughan

4:46 PM
explain?

philosophy/ethics
reference to the trolley problem

Oh, this is some famous scenario?
Gotcha.

The trolley problem is a thought experiment in ethics. The general form of the problem is this: There is a runaway trolley barreling down the railway tracks. Ahead, on the tracks, there are five people tied up and unable to move. The trolley is headed straight for them. You are standing some distance off in the train yard, next to a lever. If you pull this lever, the trolley will switch to a different set of tracks. However, you notice that there is one person on the side track. You have two options: Do nothing, and the trolley kills the five people on the main track. Pull the lever, diverting...

1 is indeed CONSEQUENTIALIST

Defending: C O

4:47 PM
3 is dead; it was CURSORY

ha!

sorry :-)

CURSOR-Y boo!

3 was a nice clue

2: S_P, storytelling perhaps

4:48 PM
It was a nice clue. Just a bad pun.

:P If unfair, lemme know

A terrible pun, that's why I love it

@n_palum Trying to figure out how to parse your clue...

You may not know it, Dues should

contact 2 @n_palum but super-tentative

4:49 PM
no idea

As should I, contact 2

2: contain

... I used your version of that clue Deus

my guess is COO (because SCOOP both means a news story that's exclusive and is the title of a novel by Evelyn Waugh)
but I bet ffao's answer is nearer

4:51 PM
Technically CONTAINMENT

Explain?

(I was just typing: "but shouldn't it be containment in that case?")

gah, I should've gotten that

SCP: Secure, contain, protect

4:52 PM
okay....
Defending: C O A

(and yup, CONTAIN rather than CONTAINMENT was right, sorry)
1. Economist

For the number of people here, the number of clues is somewhat lacking...

Yeah CONTAIN is right in this case, the one I know of better is CONTAINMENT (per the game) and I discussed the two with Deus a few days ago :P
3: Team

contact 3 @n_palum

3: not COLLEAGUES

4:53 PM
COA

Right.,

4: Blood

contact 4 @n_palum

4: not COAGULATE?

I need to go to work, not making clues because I wouldn't be able to confirm them

4:53 PM
contact 3

bye @ffao

3: not CO-ATHLETES?

4 yes, 3 no

3: not COACH?

3 No
2: Carriage Carriage

4:56 PM
2: not COAL

Nope

Really? I thought that fit well... :(

I don't understand how COAL fits 2 at all.

5: Lead cable

4: Columbian and British buttocks are rough (6)

4:56 PM
contact 5 @Deusovi

^^^ What Gareth said

@GarethMcCaughan It is carried by a (train) carriage.

contact 4 @n_palum
@GentlePurpleRain I suppose. But "carriage" means the act of carrying, or something like that, not the thing carried, no?

4: not COARSE

6. Quinquireme of Nineveh ...

4:57 PM
4 Yes

@GarethMcCaughan I thought it could be either. I might be wrong.

I thought that read funny :P

I get the feeling there won't be any contacts on 6...

Yeah :P

Depends whether anyone happens to recognize the reference. If not, then not.
Most of the COA words I can think of are difficult to make nontrivial clues for. Which suggests a strategy for the defender: pick a word that no one will find a good way to clue :-).

4:59 PM
7: The word coalesce

8. Predecessor of many conjunctions

...contact 7 :P

hmm I vaguely recognize the reference, just don't get what the word you are looking for is
