8:00 AM
There's more lol
NEET Students Get English And Hindi Question Papers Instead Of Telugu
Those who choose to write in regional language did not get their paper

so what happens to them?
a resit?

I am pretty sure that this will end up in national courts and the exam will be reconducted again.

how many people sit the exam

1.2 million

wow
that's insane

8:02 AM
JEE has even more :P

I think there is a problem here
why so many people want to be doctors?

India's population is 1.3 billion
18% of the world's population

yes
and how many people are say 18,19 y/o
or whatever the average age is before college

regardless, I think India should increase the number of medical schools and engineering schools
so that the exams become less competitive as more and more people are allowed entry into these fields
until such time as the increaed numbers of doctors and engineers exceeds demand
and salaries plummit
at which point, doctors and engineers become cheap to employ, yipee, and less people want to do these professions
@Yashas is college tuition free for medical students/enginneering students?

8:09 AM
nope
it depends on the person's tag

so do you have to pay it up front?
or do you get a loan?
is there any government contribution?

if you are the richest man in India but you have a special reservation tag, then your college fees will be cheaper
if your parents are begging in the streets but your document says you do not have reservation, you have to pay the full fees
#IndianGovernmentLogic

@Yashas did you know many medical graduates leave India for other countries that pay more

@Kenshin I don't know. I did not write NEET :P

@Yashas it applies to engineering too
So my proposed system is that you get a university place on condition that you will work in India for the next 10 years
So for 50% of engineering places for example, the students need to sign a contract stating they will work in India for 10 years or they will pay a fine

8:12 AM
Nobody stays in India :p
Microsoft CEO is from India

exactly

Google CEO is from India

yep
so India is losing out

#BlameGovernment
There is reservation system for jobs too
This year's JEE Main cutoff for General category was 81
SC cutoff is 32
ST cutoff is 27

If India can stop the brain drain, they will become a very great country indeed with such a high population with such strong education

8:13 AM
There are SC people who are living in mansions.
@Kenshin The government needs to get votes too :P
They start using the SC/ST/Religion/etc to get votes.

user228700
@Yashas Really?! :-o Geez.

PwD cutoff is 1
@Kaumudi.H There are 90 questions. On average, you get 1 mark for every 4 questions if you mark randomly. 90/4 =22.5 marks
A ST person just needs to get 2-3 questions correct and mark the rest randomly to clear JEE Main :D

What is a "ST" person?

The Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) are various officially designated groups of historically disadvantaged indigenous people in India. The terms are recognised in the Constitution of India and the various groups are designated in one or other of the categories. During the period of British rule in the Indian subcontinent, they were known as the Depressed Classes. The percentage of people in scheduled castes is essentially the percentage of people in the lower part of Indian society. In modern literature, the Scheduled Castes are sometimes referred to as adi dravida or Dalits....

sdo they are disadvantaged

user228700
8:18 AM
@Kenshin Not anymore.

@Kenshin Not all of them.
Those who are really disadvantaged don't even get 27 marks.
The government must be spending money on teaching the disadvantage instead of making exams easier.
It seems that NEET officials had informed the students about the dress code in advance.

I"m sure it doesn't cost much money to make exams easier though

So students decided not to obey it.

ah so it's their own fault

yea

8:21 AM
but still, I think the bra thing is too extreme

Ujjain: Male staff frisk girls, aspirants allege indecency at NEET exam centres

user228700
Thinking about this system too much gives me a nice headache.

yeah it's a tough one
I guess the best thign to do is jsut do what you can within the system

user228700
@Kenshin That's the only thing we can do!

exactly
so thinking about th emerits of the system isn't worthwhile

9:23 AM
@Yashas hi

mornin

@AlbertEinstein hi

@yashas, A particle is moving in a circular path of radius r with uniform velocity v. Find the change in velocity when the angular displacement $\theta $

vector subtraction

@yashas, how?

@yashas, I couldn't understand. How to solve it?

You did not bother to watch the videos.
You can't learn vector algebra in 3 minutes.
I am not going to give the answer.

@yashas, which part of vectot is needed? I have read the chapter vector!

Watch all the videos.
You can't study physics without vectors.

@yashas, yeah. I have completed the chapter vectors and scalars a week ago

9:41 AM
Why do you have difficulty subtracting two vectors then?

@yashas, which two vectors are to be subtracted?

change in velocity = final_velocity - initial_velocity

@AlbertEinstein What you posted there is not even a complete sentence ("when the angular displacement" does what?)
I find your continued refusal to show effort and just asking people for the solution rather rude.

@ACuriousMind, when the angular displacement $\theta $

That's not a sentence. It has no verb.

9:45 AM
@AlbertEinstein The question does not make sense until you say that the change in angular displacement is $\theta$

,@yashas, @ACuriousMind, ..oo i didn't notice that

actually, change in angular displacement does not make sense :P
angular displacement implies a change in position
you should've added an "is" before $\theta$

^that. Then you should describe what you think you should do to solve this question and where you're stuck.

user228700
@JohnR: Morning! :-)

user228700
Oh, you're gone :-/

9:57 AM
I still see him

seen 9m ago, talked 2h ago
JR is AFK

user228700
^

10:10 AM
@Kaumudi.H Morning
I was briefly away ...
I had to Google AFK to find out what it meant - you young things and your Internet speak ... :-)

user228700
:-) I quite like the phrase "young things". It has a certain charm to it.

It's 50% patronising and 50% envious :-)

user228700
It's actually quite nice that even though you're a little more than three times as old as me, you're not half as patronising as those who are only 7 years older :-)

@JohnRennie How's the car?

FKD :-(

10:16 AM
:/
How'd you do that?

user228700
@JohnRennie Huh? What's up with your car?

My drive is on quite a steep slope. I started the car and started to reverse it out but had to get out to move something that was on the drive. I thought I had put the handbrake on - but I hadn't.

Oh fuck
That sucks man, I'm sorry to hear it :/

So as soon as I got out the car started rolling backwards. I jumped back in but too late to stop the car door hitting a tree, and that bent the door back.
It's not the end of the world, but it's a nuisance to say the least.

Damn, you jumped back in?
John's a ninja

10:19 AM
I'll have to find a reliable body shop in Chester and arrange for it to be fixed.

I'd just have watched the car drift away and think "I hate life"

user228700
@JohnRennie Oh, geez, that sucks! :-(

@BernardoMeurer :-) It was only rolling at walking pace so it wasn't a death defying leap.
@Kaumudi.H It's a pain, but oh well that's life. The annoying thing is that I've been reversing cars out of my drive for 30 years now, and it's the first time in 30 years this has ever happened to me.

user228700
@BernardoMeurer An actual ninja would know :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie :-( These things can happen at any time, I guess.

10:22 AM
@Kaumudi.H I didn't see him at last year's ninja convention, which should be proof of his prowess

Maybe I'll use it as an excuse to get a new car ...

@JohnRennie How old is the current car?

user228700
@JohnRennie Do they sell cars on eBay? ;-)

@Kaumudi.H Yes

@JohnRennie right, but you'd agree that it's a fictitious force? Same with centrifugal forces

10:23 AM
@BernardoMeurer Ancient. It's a 2003 plate. But it's in good condition and it's been really reliable over the five years I've owned it, so I would be sad to see it go.

@JohnRennie Ah, I was hoping for a nice 1980's vintage :P
Do you still have a bike?

@Kaumudi.H I bought the car on ebay. It cost me £800!

Lol, I love you John

user228700
@JohnRennie YOU'RE KIDDING!! :-o

@BernardoMeurer If you mean a motorbike then no. I sold the motorbike when I left university. I'm not sure I feel brave enough to get back on a motorbike now :-)

user228700
10:25 AM
@JohnRennie A scooter, perhaps? :-)

@Kaumudi.H no, really. I tend to buy old and cheap but reliable cars if I can. I haven't always succeeded because some of my buys have been old and unreliable, but this car was a really good buy.

@JohnRennie I've been playing with the idea of starting to ride a motorbike

user228700
OK, I've realised that the word scooter can mean many different things so to clarify, this is what I mean:

user228700

user228700
@JohnRennie Wow, I see...

10:26 AM
@Kaumudi.H I wouldn't have any use for a scooter. Round Chester I walk or cycle and I only use the car for long trips like visiting family.

user228700
Ah, right, right :-)

@BernardoMeurer riding a motorbike can be really, really exhilarating, but I'm not sure I recommend it. Several people I knew died or were paralysed in motorbike accidents, and that was 30 years ago when the roads were a lot quieter than they are now. I came pretty close to a major accident myself an a couple of occasions.
@Phase I'm not keen on the term fictitious force because the force is very real. It's the interpretation of the force that needs care. For example people tend to think of centrifugal force as a force pushing an object outwards when in fact the only force present is one pushing the object inwards.

@JohnRennie I'll wear a helmet
That makes you invincible

i wonder what do i want to read now
clive barker's book of blood or damnation game looks good

10:32 AM
There are several Books of Blood aren't there? Isn't it a series of anthologies?

user228700
@JohnRennie In India, we may just have more bikers on the road than cars.

Penrose's curve to smooth out two segments is defined by $$R\cos(\frac{\theta \pi}{\pi - 2\chi}) = \exp(R^2 \sin^2(\frac{\theta \pi}{\pi - 2\chi}) - 1)^{-1}$$

@JohnRennie Ah yeah I guess so

I'm having some trouble visualizing what it's supposed to look like
($\chi$ is the angle between the two segments, kinda)

i guess i was thinking of the 1st volume

10:34 AM
The two segments being $(\tau_0, \tau_0 \tan(\chi),0,0)$ and $(-\tau_0, \tau_0 \tan(\chi),0,0)$

I've got to go and make the bed - it's an exciting life :-)
Back soon ...

user228700
@JohnRennie Don't you make the bed right in the morning like normal people do?

@Kaumudi.H I've just done the washing so I need to make the bed from scratch.

user228700
Ah, OK :-P

does the bed exist tho?

10:35 AM
I've never understood the concept of making the bed :P

it's a figment of your imagination
once you convince yourself that, you wouldn't need to make the bed anymore

user228700
@BalarkaSen x'D

@ACuriousMind Me neither
All I know is that if you don't make your bed your girlfriend will hate you

user228700
@ACuriousMind Well, I like it better when my sheets are properly tucked in at the corners.

My bed is easy to make. I literally just roll it back down because I slept motionless as if I died

10:37 AM
@BernardoMeurer ...how do you know anything about my girlfriend? :P

@ACuriousMind It's a universal law. It's Meurer's 6th law

What are the neuter laws?
Goddamn autocorrect, sec

user228700
@BernardoMeurer And what might be the first 5?

Meurer laws*

@Kaumudi.H Well, I have a few universal laws
In no particular order

10:39 AM
@Kaumudi.H I've never been a fan of the whole "order" thing. I prefer a certain state of messiness

"death grips is god"
5 times

user228700
x'D

user228700
@ACuriousMind It's quite hot where I live so if the sheets don't envelop me, that makes it easier to breathe.

- If it's not working transpose the matrix
- If it's not working take the derivative
- Chemistry is bullshit
- Women hate messy beds
- Pineapples are hard to stand on
- Do not mistake Slovenia and Slovakia. They will hate you.
3

I think everybody hates messy beds :|

user228700
10:42 AM
@BernardoMeurer I actually quite like those! x'D

i don't

@Yashas I really don't care for it ::looks at chaotic bed::
@Kaumudi.H :)
That one about transposing the matrix is really true lol

John's laws:
1. too much is just right
2. if you can still stand up you haven't eaten enough

10:52 AM
I'm in index hell

user228700
@JohnRennie (2) nearly happened last night when I had a bowl of maggi, a sandwich, 20 spoons of rice & potato chips and quite a lot of chocolate ice cream for dinner.

user228700
I didn't have it all at one sitting though, which helped :-P

Who is the asshat that names a track /. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO NAME THE FILE

"Who is the asshat that names a track" is a perfectly good file name.

@Kaumudi.H keep up the good work! :-)

10:58 AM
i'm done fiddling around in this chat for now. gotta get actual work done.
surely there are better ways to procrastinate if i think hard P:

"He's worse than a communist! He's a socialist with a human face! That's the lowest form of existence! There are frogs crawling there"
How can someone not love Zizek

what a lumpen bourgeois.

This reminds me of my favorite shirt ever
Which just said "Communism with a human face"
And then had a picture of Stalin

@yashas, ABCD is a cyclic quadrilateral with diagonal AC. Find the area of triangle ABC where $\angle ABC=84$, $\angle BAC=36$, $\angle ACB=60$. Is there any way to find the area?

There is, but it is Not A Number

11:07 AM
@AlbertEinstein If you continue ignoring my and yashas' requests to show effort and describe where you're stuck I will start removing you from this room every time you ask such a question.
6

@AlbertEinstein you kind of ask specific, easily googleable questions, and don't even use it as a follow up for another question or discussion

@AlbertEinstein Ignore ACM, if you don't stop I'll make you stand on a pineapple for good measure

Why is standing ona pineapple hard?

Bernado he needs worse

@JohnRennie Have you tried it?

11:09 AM
Force him to learn about memory [joke]

@JohnRennie Dude, have you tried?

Won't lego be more painful?

@Phase Lol, That's kept only as a last resort

@ACuriousMind I mean, why is harder than standing on anything that rolls?

No
the ultimate pain

11:09 AM
@Secret Lego isn't a spiky fruit of hell
@JohnRennie IT HAS SPIKES

is to take UK 3 pronged plug, and force him to jump from a metre up onto it
Honestly I just made myself wince

You mean standing on a pineapple barefoot?

I've stepped on UK plugs (Thanks John), it's not that bad
@JohnRennie Yes, of course

I think durians are worse

What do you think I do on my free time?!
Tsc

11:10 AM
Bernado you have bad choice of foot-fruit
2

It hurts just by pressing my palm on it

Mangos are much more comfortable

user228700
@JohnR: My sister has offered to take me to the U.S on vacation! :-o

@Kaumudi.H wow! An older sister presumably?

user228700
Yep. She's really my third cousin but we've become great friends after having met for the first time around 3 years ago.

11:16 AM
Whereabouts in the US?

user228700
@JohnRennie Atlanta. She used to go the University of Georgia over there; she has graduated and is working now.

I don't know that area at all, but then I've only been to a few places in the US.

user228700
I don't know if I'd allow her to do all the spending; a vacation to the U.S can be quite expensive and she's promising to save up till the vacation starts. Said she'll take me to the HP world in Orlando and everything! :-o But I highly doubt if I feel OK with her spending so much money on me.

Atl is great
Best music in the world

user228700
Atl?

11:20 AM
Atlanta, clearly.

user228700
Right :-/

ATL was an R&B group from Atlanta, Georgia. The vocalists are Tré, Will, L-Rock and rapper Danger. They had enlisted R. Kelly to produce their debut album The ATL Project, released in July 2004. Two singles released from this album: "Calling All Girls" (#12 UK Singles Chart, May 2004), and "Make It Up With Love" (#21 UK, August 2004). == Biography == The four members of ATL - vocalists Tre, Will, L-Rock, and rapper Danger, came together after being chosen though an Atlanta-area talent search. Where previous R&B groups (112, Jagged Edge) had crossed over into hip-hop, by either featuring a guest...

user228700
My brain saw "atl" and "music" and thought maybe you'd misspelled "Alt" as in alternative.

user228700
@JohnR: It's up to me to decide but I don't know what to do! :-/

@Kaumudi.H I'm reluctant to advise, but I suspect the trip could get quite expensive and you have got several years of university about to start.

11:23 AM
Nonsense. She can stay in crack dens for free
Atlanta has plenty of cheap accommodations
The murder rate isn't high for nothing!

Can moderators merge accounts?
@user37292 Are you Smerdjakov? — Yashas 2 hours ago

@Yashas No

@Yashas: I am indeed, flesh and soul. — user37292 7 mins ago

If a user wants to merge two accounts, direct them to this page

earlier, that person suggested an edit and it was rejected

user228700
11:25 AM
@JohnRennie Hmm, perhaps my brain is doing some exaggerating. She has a house in which I can stay and she can cook and I might stay there for max. a week or two. I should probably look up costs for flight tickets, see if I can afford them...

@JohnRennie They could once, so you were not entirely wrong, but that feature was removed somewhen before I became a mod.

@ACuriousMind aha! I was sure I remembered mods here merging accounts

what about that person's edit?

user228700
90,000?!?! OK, I certainly can't go :-/

11:28 AM
@Yashas They need to get their accounts merged - the reviewers were right to reject that edit.

@Kaumudi.H ah, I was about to say I suspect the flights will be expensive.

user228700
Damn :-/ She told me that she'll cover the flight tickets but I can't let her pay 90,000!!!

Also, saying "that is my account" is not actual proof - we can't let users edit posts in such a fashion just because they claim they are the same person. If they are the same person, the SE team will merge the account and they can then edit the post again.

@Kaumudi.H your trip is not going to cost 90 large

@0celouvskyopoulo7 That's rupees, not dollar, I believe :P

11:29 AM
Where did you get that idea

user228700
Yes, rupees.

(I have no idea at all how much 90k rupees are)

1$ is 65 INR
INR = Indian Rupee

user228700
@ACuriousMind About $1400.

~1400$

11:31 AM
You could buy several laptops for that!

user228700
@JohnRennie -_- I don't want another laptop, I want to go the HP world in Orlando :'-( Oh, well. Guess I'll just wait till I start earning.

@Kaumudi.H Go by boat

user228700
Yeah, right -_-

user228700
Oh, well, at least there's ice cream in the fridge and any day that has ice cream in it is a fine day.

11:35 AM
Hmm, Chennai to London is only £350 return. I thought it would be more than that.

user228700
@JohnRennie Wow, that's relatively cheap. But there's nobody I know who lives in London and besides, NO HP WORLD or anything!

That's not that much, I wanted to visit my cousin in Switzerland and its 128€

user228700
Might as well eat some ice cream then, on that note.

user228700
@JohnR: I do have other relatively fun things to do this summer! My teacher, for instance, has invited me (and me alone from her set of students ::evil laugh::) for her wedding in July!

I'm aware you ladies have a fascination with weddings. I'm not sure I see the appeal myself, though the free food is always welcome.

11:47 AM
@JohnRennie I really like weddings

user228700
@JohnRennie Huh? I certainly don't have a fascination with weddings. My teacher is quite wonderful (well, I say teacher but she used to be the guidance counsellor at my school) and I have never before attended a Christian wedding, which is why I'm excited. Additionally, the wedding itself is quite far away from the city so there's the bus ride to look forward to!

...why would you look forward to a bus ride?

user228700
Now, since I don't know about Christian weddings, I cannot comment but Hindu weddings are quite possibly the worst.

user228700
Three days and all!

Oh god

user228700
11:51 AM
@ACuriousMind Erm, I expect the scenery is beautiful and I have never before travelled on the particular sort of bus I have in mind so :-P

I scrolled up through the chat to find something, and saw the link to a clickhole article.. The font in this chat made me think it read as uh.. Anyone else read clickhole.com as that?

In the UK at least, I assume it's similar for Christian weddings in India, the wedding is followed by an extended party called the reception at which much eating and drinking takes place. That's generally good fun.

@JohnRennie maybe half of one

@0celouvskyopoulo7 for $1,400? That's an expensive laptop.

user228700
@JohnRennie I dunno if I will stick around for the reception; after all, she used to be my teacher/counsellor and she's also invited some other teachers from my school and all so :-/ I don't know what kind of socialising I'd do among a horde of teachers and therapists and older relatives, none of whom I know :-P

11:53 AM
Speaking of christianity

@Phase No but now I cannot unsee it. Thanks. :P

I popped into a "christian resource centre"
and picked up a book
"Quantum Shift"

@Phase Oh no

@Phase Does it contain meaningful physics stuff?

@Yashas It never does

11:56 AM
@Kaumudi.H Sitting through the service is generally considered to be the boring part of weddings. But I agree that if you don't know anyone the recepetion could be a bit awkward.

It's
AWful
Hang on Ill find and write out a bit

@JohnRennie I went to DS's wedding, and I knew no one, and I had a lot of fun
Just talk to people

user228700
@JohnRennie I expect to be quite hungry by the time the service is over so I will try to find something to eat and then leave in an hour or so.

If you don't know anyone at the reception, take your phone and play games :P

user228700
@BernardoMeurer I will try :-P I don't expect anybody to be open minded about her inviting a former student to the wedding but I'll try.

11:57 AM
@Kaumudi.H In your place I'd certainly go. Partly to wish my teacher well and partly just for the experience.

@Kaumudi.H Who cares who you are? They don't know you! ;)
Just talk to random people

user228700
@JohnRennie Of course I'm going! :-o I was just saying that I might not stay long, depending on the atmosphere...

user228700
@BernardoMeurer My other former teachers are going to be there and I hope to avoid their gang! Otherwise, I'll never get around to trying to open my mouth in front of other people.

@Kaumudi.H Why? I went drinking with my teachers after I left high school :P

user228700
@BernardoMeurer OK how?! What are these strange drinking laws in this country of yours?!

12:00 PM
@Kaumudi.H You can drink after 18. No one cares about it though :P

"When we talk about the idea of social sin or systematic sin, we might think of it in terms of nonlocal causality. Of course, we can also describe it in terms of local causality"

How? My sociology prof. gave me his number, me and a couple friends got together and a couple more profs joines

user228700
Ah, 18. OK. I was a bit confused for a moment because I was only 17 when I graduated.

So was I

@Kaumudi.H though Bernardo means 18:00 i.e. after 6 p.m. :-)

12:02 PM
@JohnRennie Read my mind

user228700
x'D @Bernardo: That's very nice, that you went drinking. Over here, that would translate to a coffee at CCD, perhaps. Nothing fancy.

The hell's CCD?

Coffee Coupled Device?

user228700
Oops, erm:

user228700

12:03 PM
"As the lessons about reality in entangled quantum reality teach us, the fact that the parts are interrelated and part of one system means that the system as a whole is affected by each of the parts and the parts are impacted by the whole. This impact is not always or only the result of local causality, but there is an integrated "non-locality" involved. What happens to one part can and must impact the rest. Such an image gives new and much-needed weight to the idea of a global church."

@Phase Please stop

Kind of like Starbucks but much cheaper.

@BernardoMeurer I continued to be 17 throughout last year, the year I graduated but you're 19, aren't you?

Now I'm 19, yeah

Right. Well, I only turned 18 this year.

What's your point?

user228700
:-P My point is some version of you were old enough to drink.

user228700
...never mind :-P

I've been drinking for... A while now

@Phase still better than chemistry
I am sooooo bad at chemistry
I am struggling to revise chemistry

Chemistry is bullshit
Read my universal laws
2 hours ago, by Bernardo Meurer
- If it's not working transpose the matrix
- If it's not working take the derivative
- Chemistry is bullshit
- Women hate messy beds
- Pineapples are hard to stand on
- Do not mistake Slovenia and Slovakia. They will hate you.

@Phase How much did you pay for the book?

@Yashas These books are free

@BernardoMeurer the first two are right.
@JohnRennie a.k.a. "mathematician".

@DanielSank what about it?
I've never been all that clear on what the 'standard quantum limit' is, to be honest
it's mostly just sounded like a fancy term people use to make some noise barrier seem fundamentally unsurmountable so that they can look cooler when they (don't) "break the limits of QM"
That said, I wanted to drop this here - blink and you'll miss it.

Guys, if I see something like this, I should be reading it as follows, right:
$$
a=\frac{d(v(x(t))}{dt}=\frac{dx(t)}{dt}\frac{dv(x(t))}{dx}=v(t)\frac{dv(x(t))}{dx},
$$
so technically our velocity function depends on position.
at first I found it weird that the velocity only depends on position, but actually i've seen that before where we consider a force that only depends on position (like a spring), where we know what the velocity is on "key" positions like the equilibrium or the turning point

@ShaVuklia Yes.

@ShaVuklia that's a tiny bit misleading
force and velocity are mostly independent
