@KeshavSrinivasan ok... I just saw that... so what is your personal view on night being caused by Mount Meru?...

@Tezz Haha, well obviously the night is actually caused by the shadow of the Earth. I expect that night being caused by Meru must be mentioned somewhere in Hindu scripture if Lalla is trying to refute it. In any case, I'm not sure how to reconcile Hindu scripture's statements about astronomy with modern science.

@KeshavSrinivasan haha... maybe it is just like kaaktaaliya samyog..😀😀

@Tezz For instance there's the statement that the moon is father from the Earth than the Sun. Richard Thompson's book "Vedic Cosmography and Astronomy", which is written from an ISKCON perspective, explains that by saying that the Puranic distances of the planets are actually height of the planets above the ecliptic plane (the plane the Earth revolves around Sun in) rather than distances from the Earth.
@Tezz A lot of Thompson's theories seem far-fetched to me though.

@KeshavSrinivasan Yeah you had already told me about it...

@Tezz By the way, Lalla believes that Mount Meru is at the North Pole, and he spends a lot his time calculating exactly how the night sky looks to the gods who live on Meru.

3:30 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan so, does he makes right calculation... ?
@KeshavSrinivasan do we have other more information about Lalla ?...

@Tezz Yes, he does. He calculates epicycles and deferents of planetary orbits just as well as ancient Greek astronomers like Ptolemy.

@KeshavSrinivasan is The only wrong thing he tells about is earth doesn't move?..
He believed in geocentric or heliocentric system... ?

@Tezz Lalla was a follower of Aryabhatta, although he thought the Earth was stationary whereas Aryabhatta thought the Earth rotated.
@Tezz Both Lalla and Aryabhatta believed in a geocentric system.

@KeshavSrinivasan Ok... were there any ancient eastern astronomers who thought about heliocentric system... ?...

@Tezz I'm not sure about that. Bhaskara's version of the Surya Siddhanta also describes a geocentric system. Aryabhatta, Lalla, and Bhaskara were all influenced by the ancient Greek astronomer Ptolemy's geocentric model.

3:38 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan Oh ok...

@Tezz Ptolemy's model was based on starting with the assumption that planets other than the Sun naturally travel in a circular orbit around the Earth, but then something causes them to deviate from their circular orbit, so you need to make corrections to the circular orbit called epicycles and deferents.

@KeshavSrinivasan oh so they didn't try to find what causes deviation from circular orbit...

@Tezz Aryabhatta, Lalla, and Bhaskara thought that it was a cosmic wind that made planets deviate from their circular orbit.

@KeshavSrinivasan Oh ok... Thanks for these informations!...

@TheDestroyer i think the original is in telugu
a confusion between ప and వ ---> pa and va
@KeshavSrinivasan @Tezz ^^ I think the original verses were transliterated into devanagari from telugu version.

4:45 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan Has anyone downvoted any of the answer of community poll?

5:04 AM
@Pandya Only question was downvoted by Rickross. He mentioned the reason. No one downvoted an answer.

@SreeCharan haha. I think is the original reason. సర్ప ----> సర్వ

I don't have Gitapress Mahabharata. Can anyone having it consider to try to find the relevant source to these two 1 , 2 videos i.e reasons provided by iammilind? in foot note etc. from Gita press book? /cc @SwiftPushkar @TheDestroyer @Tezz @SreeCharan

6:12 AM
@Pandya - Don't have GP MB either , will try to find PDF , but that wil be a huge pages wirh parts 😊👍💐

@SwiftPushkar oh! ok. Thanks

@Pandya - 😀😀 ok , thank you , that's nice find , looks like Archive.org has everything .Will download the books 👍👍💐🍫👏🌷

@SwiftPushkar Btw, do you have any idea in which Parva of Mahabharata such scene would be? /cc @KeshavSrinivasan @TheDestroyer

@Pandya In Mahabharata, mostly would be Hari vamsa Parva.
But i think Hari Vamsa Parva doesn't contain that.

@TheDestroyer oh! ok

6:26 AM
@Pandya - Sorry but I haven't gone through iammilind source , will look into that in some time😊👍👍

@SwiftPushkar ok. No problem :)

6:39 AM
@Pandya - It seems Yashoda wants krishna to steal butter and allows krishna to do so , the reason she us giving is if krishna didn't steal butter ,that day cow don't give sufficient milk , and krishna argues with yashoda that his friends won't get the butter , & kids have the first right on butter.😀
so i think @iammilind reason it valid.👍👍👏👏
@Pandya - Ok , I will try to find sources for the videos 👍👍 and the reasons provided in video as well as in answer😊

Q: What school of philosophy believes in an infinite number of Tattvas?

Keshav SrinivasanThe most prominent thinker associated with the Advaita Vedanta school is Adi Shankaracharaya, but he wasn't the founder of Advaita; Adi Shankaracharaya's guru Govinda and Govinda's guru Gaudapada were also Advaitins. As I discuss in this question, Gaudapada is famous for his Karika or commentary...

parasparānupraveśāt tattvānāṁ puruṣarṣabha
paurvāparya-prasaṅkhyānaṁ yathā vaktur vivakṣitam
O best among men, because subtle and gross elements mutually enter into one another, philosophers may calculate the number of basic material elements in different ways, according to their personal desire.
@KeshavSrinivasan - found one shloka related to your Q . although your questions is abt. philosophical school , this is not a answer 😊👍

8:11 AM
@SwiftPushkar Thanks, that's interesting.
@SwiftPushkar By the way, I'm planning to post a question on what the number of Tattvas is that Vaishnavas believe in. This verse may be relevant to that.
@SwiftPushkar Samkhya people believe in 25 Tattvas, Yoga people believe in 26 Tattvas, Pashupatas believe in 31 Tattvas, and followers of Shaiva and Shakta Agamas believe in 36 Tattvas. But I don't know what the Pancharatra Agamas say about the number of Tattvas.

@KeshavSrinivasan - ok , will try to search abt. pancharatra agamas no.of tatvas😊👍

8:35 AM
@RohitSinghRathore Yes, Shaiva Siddhanta believes in 36 Tattvas, just like Kashmiri Shaivites. This is something that the Shaiva and Shakta Agamas agree on.

Q: Giving Betel Leaf plant cutting?

Krishna P SIs it not recommended(as per hinduism) to give Betel leaf(Considered as lakshmi) plant cutting from home to a neighbour, who wants to grow it as well?

@KeshavSrinivasan @Tezz Did krishna say only Karma Yoga or entire Gita to Sun God during start of Manvantanra? Verses 4.1, 4.2 , 4.3

I don't think this is a valid Hinduism related question , it has nothing to do with religion.
@TheDestroyer -⬆

@TheDestroyer It's not clear if Krishna said the exact words of the Bhagavad Gita to Surya, or just the same general meaning. In any case, when Krishna talks about the transmission from Vishnu to Surya to Vaivasvata Manu to Ikshvaku, he is talking about the Pancharatra tradition. This is discussed in more detail in the Narayaniya section of th Shanti Prva of the Mahabharata. The Bhagavad Gita is part of the Pancharatra tradition.

Q: Bhagavad Gita was first recited to whom?

Prem PradhanSome say that it was first said to Suryadev Vivasvaan. Some say, it was recited to Arjuna, Sanjay and Drithrashtra? So, who is supposed to be the first to hear Bhagavad-Gita???

@KeshavSrinivasan But i think this is during beginning of current Manavantara??

@TheDestroyer Yes, it is.

9:54 AM
@Tezz @KeshavSrinivasan i just answered earring question partially.

A: Why Lord Shiva has two scorpions on his ears?

The DestroyerThis is partial answer. There are two scorpions on the ears of lord Shiva. Who are they? Serpents Kambala and Asvatara are Lord Shiva's earrings. Chapter 34, Kedarakhanda- Maheswarakhanda of Skanda Purana mentions names of all serpents which are present on Lord Shiva as ornaments. Narada ...

@TheDestroyer Ok nice!... I just saw it...

@Tezz i actually saved the screenshot long ago but forgot it.

@TheDestroyer Is adhishesha one of the serpents? I heard he is an anklet during shiva tandava.

@TheDestroyer I'm not sure how much knowledge was taught to Vivasvan... however in Ishwara Gita Kurma purana says 'This excellent knowledge was passed by Krishna to Arjuna...'...

@TheDestroyer You have learned something from @KeshavSrinivasan tagging only specific people and ignoring others. 😠

10:01 AM
@SreeCharan ohh.. ok. I will check what serpents Shiva has when performs Tandava. I know a instance of Tandava dance in Linga Purana when he creates Kali and turns to child but i think serpents are not mentioned
@SreeCharan haha. Since they are interested or we discussed before, i tagged them. But i don't like this tagging.

@TheDestroyer Same dialogue from Keshav too.

@Tezz @TheDestroyer @SreeCharan - MB Shanti Parva also discussing abt.knowladge of Yoga told to surya & from Surya to others.Prabhupada says that was knowledge of gita , but me not sure whether that was knowledge of entire gita or knowledge of yoga only😊

@TheDestroyer yeah I was watching live on ABP news...

@SwiftPushkar I think it was just karma Yoga.

@TheDestroyer @SwiftPushkar @Tezz check the link i posted.

In the Mahābhārata (Śānti-parva 348.51–52) we can trace out the history of the Gītā as follows:

tretā-yugādau ca tato
vivasvān manave dadau
manuś ca loka-bhṛty-arthaṁ
sutāyekṣvākave dadau
ikṣvākuṇā ca kathito
vyāpya lokān avasthitaḥ

“In the beginning of the millennium known as Tretā-yuga this science of the relationship with the Supreme was delivered by Vivasvān to Manu. Manu, being the father of mankind, gave it to his son Mahārāja Ikṣvāku, the king of this earth planet and forefather of the Raghu dynasty, in which Lord Rāmacandra appeared.” Therefore, Bhagavad-gītā existed in human soci

I wanted to post that question which prem pradhan posted about Gita.

@TheDestroyer - ok , on vedbase prabhupada is saying its of gita 😊

@SwiftPushkar ohh..beginning of treta Yuga?? I thought Manvantara.

@SreeCharan haha... 😀😀

10:11 AM
@SreeCharan now, you can post answer :P

@TheDestroyer Sure but when I know about it.

@SreeCharan Ok. But it's clear. There's no beginning as time is cyclic. Pushkar's link says beginning of Treta Yuga. Ramanujacharya says it was just Karma yoga.
But i think it is not clear if it was karma Yoga or full teachings of Krishna.

@TheDestroyer there is another theory that ikshvaku kings lost the knowledge of Gita. Krishna Paramatma delivered it again to make it available to entire mankind.

This answer of Srimannarayana is nice:

A: Why wasn't Bhagavad Gita available at the time of Ramayana?

srimannarayana k vThe sloka that was referred to is as follows: इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोक्तवानहमव्ययम्। विवस्वान् मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकवेऽब्रवीत्।।4.1।। "I imparted this imperishable Yoga to Vivasvan, Vivasvan taught this to Manu, and Manu transmitted this to Iksavaku." This sloka was the first one in the 4th ...

The Bhagavad Gita was originally part of the Pancharatra tradition, which I discuss here: hinduism.stackexchange.com/a/6896/36 Ikshvaku spread Pancharatra far and wide, but then over time it was lost, so Krishna revived the tradition in the battlefield of Kurukshetra. — Keshav Srinivasan ♦ Oct 1 '15 at 12:58
This is similar theory I heard. ^^
> Sri Krishna never thought while giving discourse to Arjuna that he was an ordinary mortal. He was merged into the BRAHMAN and he never proclaimed that he was an incarnation of Vishnu

Q: Why did Lord Krishna tell Bhagwat Gita only to Arjuna and not anyone else?

learningbrainI have gone through Hindu Mythological books and found that Bhagwat Gita is told only to Arjuna by Lord Krishna at Kurukshetra. Is there any specific reason of not telling Bhagwat Gita to anyone else other than Arjuna? If Bhagwat Gita is complete knowledge of KARMA then why didn't Lord Krishna ...

be happy answer😀😀

By this he meant that BG is not said by Krishna? @Tezz @TheDestroyer @SwiftPushkar
@SwiftPushkar Another reason is Bhima didn't needed BG. He is underrated character of Mahabharata along with Yudhishtira.

@SreeCharan he might have meant that...

@Tezz I am tired of listening such claims. 😀

@SreeCharan haha ...

@SreeCharan -😀👍👍

10:28 AM
@SreeCharan srimannarayana doesn't believe in incarnation concept at all....

@Tezz Oh! I had a thought he is something different from others.

@SreeCharan Yeah. He believes creator Brahma is Supreme Brahman. He lives in Tirupati.

@SreeCharan yeah actually he even doesn't believe that Atharvaveda is Veda... and he considers ValmikiRamayana as pramana for thia haha... 😀😇

@Tezz He is somewhat similar to Rakesh Joshi.

@Tezz Perhaps he believes in three vedas because atharvana veda is divided later.
@TheDestroyer HaHa.. There can be only one sv and one rakesh Joshi. They are unique.

10:32 AM
Nirbhaya answer can be given by BG 18.66

@TheDestroyer haha... Rakesh believes in Tantras... he doesn't believe in Tantra too...

Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reaction. Do not fear.

@SwiftPushkar @Yogi pointed it in a comment.

@SreeCharan haha. Rakesh believes Puranas demean Vedic Gods like Indra, Soma and others and he believes they demeaned just to highlight Shiva and Vishnu.

@SreeCharan - yes , upvoted that 😊👍ohh , haven't seen he mentioning BG shloka

@Pandya This is called Sri Ram acharama shloka in Vaishnava terminology.

@Pandya - Charam shloka , Question by @Yogi and answer by mr.Keshav👏👏👍👍

Similarly there is Sita Charama shloka too

@SreeCharan oh! Ok. Good Q/A. Btw, I just found it mentioned in foot note in Bhagvatam.

Q: What scriptures other than Dharma Sindhu say sins are stored in hair?

The DestroyerThis answer says sins are attached to hair and devotees tonsure their hair when they visit temples to get rid of sins. It says Dharma Sindhu mentions the verse. तीर्थोपवास कर्तव्य सिरसोमुन्दनानिच सिरोगतानि पापानि यान्तिमन्दनथो यतह् tīrthopavāsa kartavya sirasomundanānica sirogatāni pā...

@TheDestroyer If this was true, people would accumulate a ton of sins and then shave their head and they will get rid of sinful reactions.

@ChinmaySarupria Yes. Even that's the reason i asked the question.
Ancient Indian kings had long hair.
But i want to confirm it.

@RohitSinghRathore regarding your recent question... hinduism.stackexchange.com/questions/18172/… Me and @Pandya had similar discussions in the past in this chatroom:
Mar 17 at 17:37, by Tezz
Feb 23 at 11:35, by Tezz
@Pandya
1) Moksha is eternal.
2) Universe is running from eternity.
3) Atman can't be created.

The above three things are Universal truth. But do you think can these three things be true simultaneously?...
Feb 23 at 11:37, by Pandya
@Tezz only theories like Ajatvada can satisfy them.
Feb 23 at 11:41, by Tezz
@Pandya yes... if moksha is eternal and universe is running from eternity.. then if at least 1 being gets Moksha in one cycle of universe.. then there should be infinite no. of beings who had got liberation... we should have been liberated then...
@RohitSinghRathore ^^^^...

@SreeCharan The Narada Purana doesn't mention Ganesh Chaturthi. But the Ganesh Chaturthi Vrata Katha may claim to come from the Narada Purana. In any case, there are absolutely no records of Ganesh Chaturthi earlier than a few hundred years ago.
