@allquixotic I actually need an instance of Windows -_-
except scaleway/online.net has too high latency
lol
@Bob local windows instance?
@Bob for long-term or do you just need one? I can give you access to mine
oh. latency
mine's in Canada
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic nah, long-ish term... game hosting :P
15:07
game servers and an E5-1620v2 are !!no
well, maybe some games
but most game servers hog CPU like there's no tomorrow
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Terraria with 2 players is fairly light... I was considering running it on that Atom :P
o_O does Terraria require Windows?
Starbound has a Linux native server
@allquixotic IIRC Terraria has a Linux server now; would need to check
Pretty sure I had it running on a Linux box previously; but then it might've been Wine'd
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic ... good point. No, it doesn't.
But I was going to run tshock and the last tshock build died on mono
It used to work
maybe they've fixed it in the year since
the official server used to be officially for windows but worked on mono
I was going to chime in there, but realised my experience of Tshock is also >1 year old...

Speaking of terraria, farming pirate invasions right now :P

I guess it's been a while since I played...
Ah, hardmode too

@bertieb expert mode too :P

Also a new one to me :P
Wait, can't be

I need to play the game again to figure out what's going on :P
Bob
Bob
15:22
lol
@bertieb join us sometime!
@bertieb basically everything's deadlier and harder to kiill, but you get special drops and higher drop chances
@Bob don't tempt me; I've already got my hands full with games. and Terraria is one that'd probably run fine on my Macbook, so I could play at work >_>
@Bob Will keep that in mind, thanks :)
Just started HoI4 though, which is one heck of a time swamp...
Fascist Bulgaria is kind of fun to play
@bertieb HoI 4 is awesome!
Until the Soviet Union goes "hey, nice countries you've annexed there, shame if something were to happen to them..."
@allquixotic Agreed! First playthrough is a bit daunting
But even still, Greece and Yugoslavia didn't stand a chance :P
lol
I'm kinda doing another run of watchdogs 2
15:26
first game as Germany, AI playing historically accurate, yet I managed to form the Berlin-Moscow Axis with the Soviet Union a key part of the Axis, plus Italy and Japan fell into line, so I could focus on the western front while the Soviet Union helped me a lot in central Europe
oddly cause there's a secret in there that has me somewhat confused
(It's weird loading up other countries for comparison- bit of a "they actually have have tech and factories??" moment)
@allquixotic Ooh; Soviet-included Axis sounds pretty deadly
plowed through western Europe, conquered France and the UK, Nationalist Spain won and joined the Axis, then conquered northern Europe (Sweden, Denmark and Finland), then went for Greenland, then Canada to establish a north american foothold, then invaded the US East Coast, nuked DC and New York, and the US surrendered and WW2 ended
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic which reminds me I said I was going to play it -_-
@allquixotic Nice! How did you get the Soviets into the Axis though?!
15:28
@bertieb I went for the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact early game, and improved relations with them, traded with them and got them to agree to join faction before they could establish the Comintern faction
@allquixotic Ahh. In the Bulgarian game I have they just laughed at M-R Pact and have stomped across Germany
Italy and Japan just kinda naturally love Germany, so you don't have to put in any work to get them to join the Axis
hey I got fascist Legionary Bulgaria to join the Axis too, though they weren't terribly helpful in my central European war against Allied powers in the area
(Oh jings, I am jonesing to play now...)
@allquixotic I can totally believe AI Bulgaria being kinda crap
15:30
France put up a surprisingly hard fight when trying to take them
As that's how they start :P
UK was pretty atrociously hard early game too, they invaded Germany's north coast from the English channel and started taking core territories before I drove them back
Heh; having come from other PDX games, when I saw France's modifier I went "20% defence??"
Hard to recalibrate from BBB expectations
but once I had taken France, it was easy to then conquer the UK after getting advanced battleships to take the English Channel
@allquixotic RN is a serious pain
Well, if all you have is 4 subs
They kind of just laugh and say "Here's a nickel farthing kid, go buy yourself a real navy"
15:33
the only navy that actually rivaled mine in late-WWII in my game was the US Navy, which built historically realistic aircraft carriers; I went with Hitler-preference-accurate big scary battleships, but upgraded them with extra engines to chase down the fast carriers
imagine having WW2 end with much faster Tirpitz and Bismarck-class super ships chasing down aircraft carriers and successfully evading air attacks, then shelling the USS Enterprise
@allquixotic Scary :P
the British navy turned out to be a poor match (in this game's navy mechanics) for advanced battleships, because it was mostly cruisers and destroyers
one battleship can take out a hilarious number of smaller surface ships
That's useful to know; BG could probably scrape together one battleship in a year or two...
does bulgaria have a coast?
destroyers' shells practically bounce off a battleship; cruisers' shells do like 0.2-0.5% damage each; heavy cruisers' shells give them pause (especially if it's a crit) and do 1-5% damage; and battlecruisers are formidable enemies that can team up and take down a BB; but the Royal Navy was mostly cruisers and smaller, with few heavies and BBs
15:37
@JourneymanGeek Aye; Black Sea (+ Med and Adriatic once Greece and Yugoslavia are out the way ;P)
my second game (after reducing the USA into the fascist "Free American Empire" which controls Alaska and some islands in the Pacific) started with the tiny country of El Salvador
so far I think I've conquered 75% of South America, nearly all of Central America, and formed a faction with Venezuela to round out my presence in South America
I like where this is going... (heh, yup)
the factions are weird in that game o_O
it's the "Comintern" faction (USSR and countries near it formed a small faction), versus the Axis (Germany, Italy and Japan) versus the Allies (UK, USA, Greece, France)
versus The Cartel, my faction :D
I'm at peace with the Axis but have no formal alliance or ties with them; at war with the Allies; and the Comintern is at war with the Axis and Allies
Strange indeed
it's funny because the USA guaranteed the independence of most countries in South America, but when I declared war on those countries, the USA didn't declare war on me, for the longest time
kept provoking them, taking Mexico, and so many little piddly countries, and the USA remained a peaceful trading partner
El Sal became the expansionist Germany-like civilization from the south, while Germany itself, played by the AI, went the expansionist route themselves
15:41
@allquixotic Did you have ongoing wars when declaring?
@bertieb usually, but I started all the wars in the early game, long before Germany was ready to annex Poland
Germany was probably like "whoa, that tiny country is mad"
so now they provide most of my steel
@allquixotic Just wondered as AIUI that can mess with independence guarantees
I also had several years of peace with USA while conquering Mexico when the UK and other Allies were my enemy, but USA didn't want to join in the war
I think USA didn't formally join the Allies faction til like 1943
and it was because of Germany, not me
how do I merge multiple pages into 1 excel for printing?
15:47
@bertieb also, the Sabaton sound track is amazing
@acoder Need you to explain in more detail what you have, and what you're trying to do. Also, your terminology is a little weird. By "pages" do you mean worksheets (also sometimes called "tabs") within one Excel workbook? Or do you have multiple workbooks (multiple .xls / xlsx files)?
@allquixotic DLC? Might check it out as the soundtrack seems underwhelming as compared to EUIV
Also, do you want to have everything print on one sheet of paper (it'll be suuuuper tiny font), or just be able to print multiple worksheets at once?
@bertieb yep, DLC
@allquixotic Cool, will have a look next sale
it's fantastic
if you subscribe to streaming music services you can listen free there
search for Sabaton Hearts of Iron
and Wolfpack
'fraid not; poor student etc :)
15:51
meh
youtube? :S
such a perfect song for HoI IV, especially playing as Germany
then, if Germany wins, watch The Man In the High Castle to see what happens next :P
16:18
Heh :P
hmmmmmmmmm
if I know a csv should have X number of columns
I can detect where new lines have been inserted, right?
Count the commas
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic 5 of the 9 Sabaton mentions in this room happened today :P chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=sabaton&room=118
I think a compliant CSV parser should handle newlines for you (if they're quoted)
If you do go the comma-counting route, make sure to not consider commas inside quotes as delimiters
Bob
Bob
@BenN He's using PHP, I think.
PHP and competent compliant do not go on the same page, let alone line.
16:28
Ah, then "compliant" goes out the window
PowerShell's Import-Csv gets it right
Bob
Bob
@BenN Yea, any halfway-decent parser would...

Anyone used LineageOS?
18:13
@Dog nope, I tried to flash an image of it in recovery on my iPhone 7 Plus but it said something about a memory fault
the image was for a Galaxy 7 Plus so maybe that's not compatible with the iPhone 7 Plus, I figured they were the same thing
18:34
@allquixotic one table is broken into 6 pages, but I want to print all of them as one.
18:57
I am trying to download a PDF from a site that shows ebooks. Its a flash viewer and I was able to find the ebook in .json form among the GET requests when I reloaded the page. Is there a way to convert this to PDF? I know it is the book because all the words from the book are in this file along with code for where it should be what color, etc.
I didn't see any other XML like file in the GETS that might be used to translate it to another format
19:18
@NULL Chances are that the file was never PDF to begin with
@allquixotic Actually, I happen to be a Mensa member.
(scored high enough on the WISC-III when I was a young child to join)
@Dog I have.
My Nexus 5X (before it broke) ran LineageOS 14.1.
...and I'm finally making the switch to T-Mobile. My parents will be getting new smartphones as well. I've selected the Moto G5 Plus for both as it seems to be the best phone for under $300.

@Bob @JourneymanGeek WOOHOO!!! Sins of a Solar Empire version 1.9 just hit! It's basically the 1.87 preview we saw before, but even better than that O_O
also, to everyone in here, Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is 10 USD or your regional equivalent on Steam

@allquixotic So, what made you get into strategy games?
I'd really like to spend more time in AotS but my hardware isn't up to snuff.

@bwDraco my dad buying me the original Command & Conquer for DOS when I was a little kid

...9 when it came out
Command & Conquer, sometimes known as Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, is a 1995 real-time strategy video game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Interactive. Set in an alternate history of modern day, the game tells the story of a world war between two globalized factions: the Global Defense Initiative of the United Nations and a cult-like militant organization called the Brotherhood of Nod, led by the mysterious Kane. The groups compete for control of Tiberium, a mysterious substance that slowly spreads across the world. Westwood first conceived Command & Conquer during the...

I have an R9 270X with 3 displays and one isn't working. I have one from HDMI to DVI-I (working) and one from Active DP to HDMI to HDMI (working). The problem is that my third, DVI-D (Apple monitor) refuses to work. It seems only 2 work but 3 are supposed to work on the 270X with at least one active DP adapter. What's going wrong?
21:42
@AndrewLi haven't we already been over this?
> AMD Eyefinity supports a maximum of 2 non-DisplayPort displays (e.g. HDMI, DVI, VGA, DMS-59, VHDCI) (which AMD calls "legacy output") and up to 6 DisplayPort displays simultaneously using a single graphics card or APU. To feed more than two displays, the additional panels must have native DisplayPort support.[3] Alternatively active DisplayPort-to-DVI/HDMI/VGA adapters can be employed.
AMD Eyefinity is the brand name for AMD products which support multi-monitor setups by integrating multiple (up to six) display controllers on one GPU. AMD Eyefinity was introduced with the Radeon HD 5000 Series "Evergreen" in September 2009 and has been available on APUs and professional-grade graphics cards branded AMD FirePro as well. To feed more than two displays, the additional...
the graphics card doesn't care what plugs/converters you're using on the monitor side; all it cares about is the ports being used on the card itself
out of all the non-DisplayPort sockets on the card, only two monitors can be used with all of them at any given instant
to get more than 2 monitors you have to make all monitors in excess of 2 plug into DisplayPort ports on the graphics card
the DVI-I is "strike one" for the legacy ports; the DP to HDMI is "strike two" for the legacy ports; the third monitor would necessarily have to plug into a DisplayPort port, not DVI-D
unless I interpreted your statements backwards and you're plugging in a monitor that's HDMI on the monitor side and DisplayPort on the graphics card side
It's backwards; that's why I'm confused
I followed exactly as you said; got a DP (goes into GPU) to HDMI (active) female which connects HDMI male to male into the monitor.
hmm
if you unplug the DP display, does the apple one start working?
Let me test
Sure does
21:58

A: AMD Radeon R9 270X not supporting 3 monitors

user438322You probably are using a passive DP to HDMI adaptor, that is a common issue. Most AMD cards can output to two monitors maximum using the HDMI/DVI (it's the same type of signal) signal. The way a passive adaptor works is it outputs the HDMI/DVI signal but through the DP port and the passive adapto...

there's your answer
I already checked specifically. It's an active DP to HDMI adapter
that's the adapter you need for the Apple display; that will definitely make your Apple display (also) run on the DisplayPort protocol
That'll be the third adapter I've ordered...
Ugh...
actually, since you have two monitors that have HDMI input, you could get 2x of these:
then you would have 3 native displayport signals going into your graphics card; if that doesn't work, your GPU is broken
oh, this might be the obvious, but make sure you're not running an ancient OS that can't handle 3 monitors, and update your drivers
Windows 10.
Weird how Ubuntu doesn't seem to support 3 natively
22:04
Ubuntu probably defaults to using the open source driver, which might support Eyefinity, but the open source driver is pretty damn buggy
@allquixotic BTW I got this one: amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01GORJWUG/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Apparently it isn't "active" but the description says it's a converter...
@AndrewLi looks like random Chinese crap with deceptive marketing
Darn.
if you've never heard of the brand before, or if they don't have a website in English that you can read, don't buy it
Okay, thanks for the advice. At least they allow for returns.
22:07
I'm pretty sure that just one functional active converter from one of the other protocols into DisplayPort will solve your problem, but if you want to be absolutely safe, actively converting all three monitors' signals into DisplayPort is best
since that only interfaces with the DisplayPort chipset that supports 6 monitors
Cable Matters is a good brand
I only have one displayport port
Dog
Dog
Hey @Bob looks like I'm going to have to come to Australia to test this S4 LTE-A
I don't want anything like a hub, just want 3 monitors running for work.
Nevermind. All 3 have slightly different resolutions
well just get one of the active cables first, and see if that fixes it
if it doesn't, then you'll have to shell out about $100 for a displayport hub
22:14
I hope not
my home monitor setup (for what it's worth) is 3 x Dell U2417H monitors, each of them outputting DisplayPort 1.2 MST (Multi-Stream Transport), daisy-chained
meaning I have a cable going from monitor 1 to monitor 2, a cable from monitor 2 to monitor 3, and a cable from monitor 3 to my computer
Nice
Thanks for the help
all native displayport cables
