I chose to close as a dup. My reasoning was this:
1/ The question asks "What is the purpose of this folder, and is it okay to delete the files and folders under it, or not?"
2/ The dup answers the first part of the question "What is the purpose of this folder" and allows the OP to make his own decision of the second part of the question.
3/ The OP doesn't provide enough information to answer the second part of the question "is it okay to delete the files and folders under it"
4/ That makes this bit _too broad_ **and** _opinion based_ - we don't know what software he has installed that is us

omfg work is just bonkers
/me is now on lunch thank god.
For one client we normally only cover out of hours, business crit stuff
for some reason we are covering for their normal helpdesk for a week
so we have nothing on anything not business crit. told it'd be like 12-15 tickets a day
in 3 hours, we had over 20

user226528
@DavidPostill Step #2: "The dup answers the first part of the question [~snip~]". That's where I disagree.

How can you disagree with
> Roaming is the folder that would be synchronized with a server if you logged into a domain with a roaming profile (enabling you to log into any computer in a domain and access your favorites, documents, etc. Firefox stores its information here, so you could even have the same bookmarks between computers with a roaming profile.
and
> Roaming. This folder (%appdata%) contains data that can move with your user profile from PC to PC—like when you’re on a domain—because this data has the ability to sync with a server. For example, if you sign in to a different PC on a domain, your web browser favorites or bookmarks will be available.
?
Two explanations of the purpose of the folder.

user226528
@DavidPostill It is not the purpose of the folder. It is what happens to it. In other words, the question would become "What is the purpose of these files that bother to move from computer to computer and is it safe to delete them?"

user226528
10:09 AM
I think I told you about elusive answering already.

And I disagreed with you last time.

user226528
Like your elusive answers, this answer contains zero data. ;) Because there is no known record of you and me agreeing.

The purpose is what it is for. That question is answered. Let us agree to disagree :)

user226528
Actually, it is you who brought it up in the first place. I have not been showing any signs of not agreeing to disagree.

user226528
So, as long as you are good, I am good.

10:14 AM
I'm confused
are you arguing that the linked question isn't a dupe?

Is the thing about it being potentially tricky to expand zfs storage (cf 'hidden cost') true?

'is it safe to delete these files, what are they' ?
'no, and they are...' is in the dupe answer... soooo

user226528
@djsmiley2k Not me.

(I am swithering between mdadm (raid6) + lvm vs zfs + raidz2)

@FleetCommand Actually I brought it up here because:
@Run5k All your comment did was to add fright to my pain because now I am thinking these high-time close voters could have committed many other mistakes. Many, many, many, many, many, many, many ... other mistakes. — Fleet Command 2 hours ago

10:16 AM
I would ask a question, but having difficulty is phrasing such that it's not or

@Run5k I don't think this question is a duplicate. The other question asks what the difference between "Roaming" and "Local". This one asks what is their purpose. — Fleet Command yesterday
it explains what they are, because of their purpose.

user226528
@DavidPostill Oh, yeah? My discussion with Run5k was over meritocracy. That duplicate flag ceased to be relevant.

@bertieb start 'How do I...'

user226528
@djsmiley2k Yeah. Pretty much. But that discussion ended. At least in my book.

@FleetCommand hmmm
if they are all bad, then everything is bad

10:18 AM
@djsmiley2k 'How do I...' '...decide whether to use zfs or madam + lvm' ? :P

so you might as well give up now
@bertieb ah i see

user226528
@djsmiley2k Give up on what?

how do i setup x with LVM+MDADM
@FleetCommand fighting whatever fight you seem to think matters.

I've done the lvm + mdadm setup for a Xen dom0 (host) before so could just go with that; but zfs seems like it has decent merits too.
OTOH if zfs is less flexible about adding drives to a tank/pool (terminology??) it might be less attractive

@bertieb I've never used zfs, tho I knew the guy who was working hard on getting it stable on linux

10:21 AM
(basically I have 4 pristine 3TB drives waiting to go, but another couple of non-pristine 3TB drives, the data on which will be migrated to the array-- would like to then add those 3TBs to the original 4, y'see)

tbh i guess if you can't find a way to phase the question for the site, then it's not suitable?

@djsmiley2k Ah, fair enough

'How would I plan a ZFS build for expansion in the future?'
and if the answer is 'you don't', then you know to use mdadm instead F:

Heh

Why are you using LVM + mdadm??

10:22 AM
That seems like a reasonable start; I did wonder about it being too broad tho?

Describe your specific setup

Me? Or another example of a response to that question?

Yeah you
I used to use mdadm, now I use lvm instead
not both.
So i'm interested in what you're doing

mdadm for raid6, lvm for volume management

why not use lvm for the raid?

Q: Expanding RAID6 with LVM

soundsofpolarisMy question is a bit broader than the question title, but here is my situation: I have Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR) built on 2 x 2TB drives. I want to migrate to a software-RAID on a homegrown linux machine. My current plan is backup the SHR remotely, setup a RAID6 with LVM using 3 x 2TB drives, an...

10:25 AM
Heh, just reading that Q in another window ;P
What would be the reason to not just use mdadm to create/expand/manage the RAID? — soundsofpolaris Jan 28 '14 at 20:16

Q: RAIDing with LVM vs MDRAID - pros and cons?

Faheem MithaIn his answer to the question "mixed raid types", HBruijn suggests using LVM to implement RAID vs the more standard MDRAID. After a little investigation, it seems LVM also supports RAID functionality. In the past, I have used LVM on top of MDRAID, and was not aware till now that LVM also suppor...

(a few years old now, right enough)

yeah already looked at that

Anyhoo, good to know lvm-raid is an option; that said, I'm comfortable with mdadm and lvm and it seems like a nice unixy 'separation of responsibilities'

yah true
it looks like lvm just uses mdadm raid under neath anyway :D

Ja

@FleetCommand Imo if the question being "wrongfully closed" can be mistaken for a rightful close, then it isn't good enough and may be closed. Also for 5 dumb people voting to close in 4 days if there's more than 100 views or 14 days if there's less is pretty hard to get. and if you think it's illegitimate, you can ask for a reopen in meta/chat.

10:35 AM
@satibel that's roughly what I said
@Bob I think you repcapped \o/

@JourneymanGeek then vote for duplicate :p

@satibel its already closed
MODHAMMERS IT

@JourneymanGeek I don't see a duplicate tag on my message x)

@satibel cause editing a [on hold] on it would be mod abuse, and @ChatBotJohnCavil is still dead Pining for the resurrection ship

@JourneymanGeek unless I allow it I assume?

10:45 AM
@satibel still seems a little far for a joke
there's practically no reason for me to edit someone else's chat post

oh, I forget it's main chat here, so it's more strict, I suppose.

@satibel Its also a matter of trust

user226528
@satibel For the life of me, I don't understand you. Although, no pressure...

Unless you accidentally post something that needs to be permanuked.
@FleetCommand in general, having 5 people (who have sufficient reputation) is both meritocracy and democracy in action
;p
However if I reopen it, its presumably autocratic

user226528
Okay, when you put ;p at the end I can't take you seriously.

10:48 AM
Hey
@FleetCommand Loosening the mood a bit by inserting some wit into serious conversations is common even if you're acting professional, no?
This is a chat room not a boardroom meeting after all

user226528
@Magisch Yeah. But JourneymanGeek's modus operandi is canine jokes.

"However if I reopen it, its presumably autocratic" <-- Is funny. I got voted in.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Yeah.

@FleetCommand Its worth remembering that I tend to prefer moderation by moral suation rather than force

@FleetCommand Who am I to judge if it works, eh
I make lots of bad puns and sometimes even that works in defusing tensions

user226528
10:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek Do you notice that I never insisted on re-opening the question, even though everyone is assuming it? I have answered and the OP can put a check mark on my answer.

user226528
Basically, I can't complain about the closure.

@FleetCommand I think everyone's more focused on the idea that they're wrong, or the system is somehow broken ;)
._. Open up meta for an example. I see ... 160 responses.

user226528
How do you see 160 responses?

@FleetCommand What stops you from voting to reopen it?

Q: I'd like to get the question on mechanical keyboards opened

Journeyman GeekI'd admit at this point of time that i'm apparently the resident keyboard geek and i have a bias towards getting this question reopened, and this is a blatant attempt to get it some attention, and comments arn't large enough for my reasons. The reason the question was closed was it was 'localise...

10:53 AM
It'll go into a queue, and if enough others agree, it'll be reopened

@FleetCommand on my profile page
I usually use the notifications not the profile
also, SE needs a standalone notification app. or a third party one.

@FleetCommand I mean yeah, complaining about the closure can be done via 2 channels
meta or using a reopen vote

yup
I consider meta to be more effecitve

If you agree with the vote or are ambivalent about it then there is no reason to talk about it.

user226528
10:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek By the way, I regret to inform you that you may no longer ban me for not having watch Star Wars ;p

@FleetCommand I, myself, regret nothing. Other than that incident with the burrs.

user226528
I liked Phantom's Menace the most.

._.
Well, the sequels did have excellent lightsaber combat

I was kicked for 30s for "comedic effect" on c#
in C# on Stack Overflow Chat, Jan 23 at 14:39, by mikeTheLiar
I hope you don't begrudge me a kick for comedic effect.

@satibel We do not ever do that

10:56 AM
(though I posted a rickroll)

and any room owner who does it... well, we wouldn't pick people who would do that as ROs
Oh, that would be a mockable offense.

user226528
:D Mockable?

3 minutes to returning to work :(

mockable

10:58 AM
able to be mocked.

@JourneymanGeek what about small and extraordinarily hairy dogs?
I know of at least 2 such dogs being moderators on SE sites...

@Magisch they get made mods.
At least ;p

user226528
Question: Is there a reliable dictionary that gives the meaning of all these smileys? Some of them are real head-scratchers.

;p is kinda my signature smiley
its a winking dog with a tongue sticking our, clearly

@FleetCommand Like?

user226528

How about :----}?

@FleetCommand :-)-8 User is a Big girl
@FleetCommand 8:-) User is a little girl

How do you even know this
wtf

user226528
Aha! So if one stalks the first, he is a creepy stalker, but if stalks the second, he is a pedophile. Got it.

I'm not on top of my smiley game anymore
which is ironic considering my avatar

11:10 AM
@DavidPostill not sure if bow or something else...

@FleetCommand :----} you lie like pinnochio
@satibel Use your imagination :)

user226528
And I found ._.
An emoticon that indicates depression or helplessness.

@FleetCommand There is even a book (73 pages) By Seth Godwin - books.google.co.uk/books/about/…

user226528
@DavidPostill Oh, goody, I am ordering. Let's see if Amazon has it.

@JourneymanGeek Like this? :)

Kinda, but too big. ;p
(also wauzers have floppy ears and there's no good way to do a floppy ear one line emote)

@JourneymanGeek To the Unicode committee!
Clearly a gap in the spec

"Dear Sirs and Ladies. I wish to complain about the lack of unicode wauzers. There are half a dozen cat faces and two dogs. This is insufferable, and we cannot have a canine gap leaving us bucktoothed...."

> canine gap
Gets the nod of approval

The last one is technically a wolf but looks like a racoon in windows

@JourneymanGeek Looks kinda like a fox here (OSX/Chromium)

Yeah, emojis are hardly standard

But then I had to activate the view-enhancing powers of squinting to see it properly

11:35 AM
@FleetCommand Hey, we agree on a closure :)

user226528
@DavidPostill Do we?

user226528
@DavidPostill Er... That's not a duplicate closure.

user226528
But otherwise... YAY! Weep tears of joy or something...

user226528
Damn! Mod can modify their answers any time.

11:43 AM
We can modify anything at any time
:p

@bertieb :( osx

On the lighter side of things, I setup a Nintendo Switch for my family this past weekend, and in an effort to configure it with an ideal NAT type I stumbled upon this rather unfortunate article: How to Set Up a Router's Port Fowarding for a Nintendo Switch Console
Ultimately, their official recommendation is to forward UDP "port 1 through 65535." :-/
However, I think the highlight may have been their advice on how to configure a static IP address: "Enter the IP address you found on the network device, but add 20 to the last section of digits."

lol
dear lord.
woah
and it's official nintendo hahah

Exactly!
Microsoft may occasionally catch some well-deserved heat from the IT community, but at least when they post a similar article it is rather useful: Network ports used by Xbox Live on Xbox One

well ... at least when Microsoft fucks up, they seem to at at least to try to correct their mistakes
when nintendo or apple fucks up, you just get told that you do not understand innovation

Bob
@JourneymanGeek :D at least something good came out of tonight

@Run5k FORWARD ALL THE PORTS!!!!!!! ALL. THE PORTS BOSUN!

Bob

@Bob synapse is back to runningness
I need to fix the webclient later, and do a few more bits of housekeeping

@JourneymanGeek Right?!? I found some poor kids on the Nintendo Switch subreddit who were understandably frustrated with that "official tutorial."

@JourneymanGeek put it in DMZ, it's faster :p

ALL THE PORTS! OR ITS THE LASHES FOR YE< YER SURVY SEADOG!

I have a friend of mine who considers that the worst earworm

the worst worm is that one
dammit UB, stop stopping me from playing.
though in musical earworms, "year of the bad dragon" is pretty bad, as it is furry NSFW.

eww furries

1:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek and somewhat pedophile.

Need I say, eww furries?
(actually I know a few ok ones. And a few... really annoying ones)
._.
DUDE. Totally inappropriate.

> "year of the bad dragon" is pretty bad

I kinda know what it is. It was the 50 gallon drum equivilent of one chat room I was in.

@JourneymanGeek [ebay link to 50 gallon drum of vaseline]

erm. no
Something else.
ANyway
Lets keep it safe for work and sanity here ;)
