YAY! I DID IT!

:D

YAY! YOU DID IT!

I just made a script which fetches commands from my server and runs them remotely on a school PC.

That sounds vaguely shady

Nope, it's allowed
Setting up a renderfarm (yet, again) in school

5:03 PM
Ah

I'll put the script up on github, it's pretty cool.

Hey, I can think of a scripting environment with built-in remote management facilities ;)

@BenN Powershell is disabled on school PCs, I thought about it :P

£1179.0 I'm owed in income tax. Nice
The surprise benefits of quitting your job...

5:29 PM
see this is why never doing ot and having paye sucks
they never screw it up so bad

6:11 PM
They didn't screw anything up...
They just assumed I wouldn't be randomly quitting my job mid year

h1ummmmmmm

1 hour later…
7:44 PM
Is this gonna be so terribad it makes me cry?

8:04 PM
I get to see my girlfriend in the morning!
@TOWMN why did you?

@djsmiley2k pretty sure you can get a bigger thumbdrive ... and w/ USB3 wouldnt it be faster?

i very much doubt the very old laptop has usb3
well, few years old

8:27 PM
We need a mod here right now as I just received a legal threat: meta.superuser.com/questions/12263/…
@Sathya, @studiohack, @Mokubai, @OliverSalzburg, are you available right now?

Am about. Was just looking at clearing up the comments. What is the actual threat?

in Ask a Super User Moderator, 10 mins ago, by bwDraco
@bwDraco I am not trying to circumvent a designed-in limitation of the software. Accusing someone of violating some legal dispositions should not be done that lightly. There exists laws protecting from defamation, in such unfounded accusations are definitely defamation. — Franck Dernoncourt 7 mins ago
(the comment has been deleted)

Well then don't go around and accuse people of breaking the law

Yeah, I cleared it out, I felt it was mainly posturing on his part and I didn't personally read it as an outright threat.
@bwDraco He's thanked you for removing you comment, so I don't think he meant it as a direct threat.

Okay.

8:35 PM
If you still feel uncomfortable then we can try and have a word, but to be honest I think he was just trying for a reaction at this point. He's frustrated and no-one is on his side and he's picking up whatever noise he can.

Thanks. I was worried because of the wording used.
Oliver, did you see the first comment to the question?
I'm not going to repost it.

@bwDraco You diffused it well by removing the comment he fixated on and apologising. But in all honesty I'm not sure why he fixated on you over me, I was being wholly more annoying

@Mokubai Perhaps because you have a blue name? Or a diamond on the main and meta site?

Yeah. That was weird and unexpected. I wouldn't resort to legal threats unless it's obvious that someone was purposely trying to damage my reputation.

@bwDraco Which you weren't, not really. You stated that he could be violating the EULA, he seemingly took that to the extreme and took it as defamation.

8:45 PM
Thought about the comments again, and it really looks like he's just frustrated. I honestly don't want to deal with things like this while I'm away from home.

Aye, it's not worth it.
@DavidPostill Wait, the diamond does something?

lol;

@Mokubai It allows you to be more annoying ;p

Awesome!
TIL

Steam just gave me this ^

8:51 PM
I get that a lot these days

An error doing something, and then an error trying to display the error :D

Like 3 out of 5 of the pages of adverts when I load up

@BenN Steam's been doing this a lot lately. Something's definitely wrong on their end; I do go through the Update News every time I launch the client as I'm always on the lookout for deals on Steam.

@bwDraco I was mostly joking with that comment. But I can still explain to you where you went wrong. Your initial comment is fine, because it explains to the OP why a third party might close their question because it appears a certain way - that's helpful. With your second comment, you drove it over the edge by bringing up ethics in a way that puts the OP in the focus and your impression of his post
That's why OP feels offended and starts shooting back

Thanks for the advice; will bear in mind in the future.

9:07 PM
I'm not judging any right/wrong here, just how I interpret the situation
As in, I have no idea what the OPs real intention is :P
And it also shouldn't matter, I guess

wtf am i doing with my life
@Rahul2001 Because girls.
@djsmiley2k Maybe? What's the reason for buying it?

9:52 PM
!!caaaaaaat
@allquixotic, is the bot intentionally dead? :-/

10:08 PM
@TOWMN Yes.
yesterday, by allquixotic
@bwDraco in no rush to get him back up -- I want to switch over to headless chromium but have to compile chromedriver from git and modify a few lines of code

Bob
10:38 PM
hi

Hi!

Morning 0_0
Man, so much drama over a closure
(I fell asleep ><)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Bad dog! You're not allowed to sleep!

10:53 PM
Apparently not
Or people need to learn to leave sleeping dogs like
Had good backup tho ;p

@Burgi /me checks the price of a UK ticket

hehe

@JourneymanGeek Isn't that one of them there high-falutin language function doohickeys

Poor joke about closures
I think I've asked this before, but why are some people's names in chat in italics?

10:56 PM
Those are room owners (ROs)

@bertieb ROs

Gotcha, thanks

Closures are pretty great

We have quite a few cause I actually like sleeping at night, and if there isn't a moderator around, they can handle minor situations on their own
in a sense, as far this chatroom goes, they're our extra trusted front paws.

@BenN Speaking of closures, the Close Votes queue is looking good as the "final frontier" in the Review section. We had seven different people review 20 of them today... nicely done!

11:00 PM
Very good!

I'd like to get to 3k so I can help out there
eyes 'new questions' jealously

one day i'll ask another silly question about CDs and get to 3k

@bertieb, you have done a lot of work in the other queues, though... it hasn't gone unnoticed, so thank you! You just need to squeeze in another answer or two, since you are so close to 3k.

@Run5k Ah thanks, I appreciate you saying :) I enjoy reviewing! Yeah; shot up in '15 and then life happened, just need to find a good Q or two :D
So JG linked to Harmy's Despecialised Edition on WP
Which I've just noticed also has an italicised title
Any thoughts as to why? MD/source says {{good article}}, maybe it was a featured page?
Harmy's Despecialized Edition is a series of fan edits of the first three films in the George Lucas-created Star Wars franchise: Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The edits were created by a team of Star Wars fans led by Petr "Harmy" Harmáček, an English teacher from Plzeň, Czech Republic. The original Star Wars trilogy was released theatrically by 20th Century Fox for Lucasfilm between 1977 and 1983. Subsequent releases on home media, such as the 1997 "Special Edition" releases, introduced significant changes to the films, including additional scenes and new comput...

It's the name of a literary-ish work I think
Like how book titles get italicized in English essays
Example: "In Lois Lowry's book The Giver, chatacters do things that I cannot remember because English class isn't my strong suit"

11:09 PM
Huh, makes sense and checks out
So next related question: How the heck have I never (never!) noticed that there are italicised article titles on Wikipedia??

@Burgi, I didn't remember that the CD/DVD question was yours. That is a very good one! When you receive 143 up-votes, you know that there were a lot of people who have always contemplated the same thing, but never knew who/where to ask! :-)

thanks :)
for those who haven't seen it:

Q: Why do CDs and DVDs fill up from the centre outwards?

BurgiI recently had to burn a DVD for the first time in ages and I was wondering why CDs and DVDs start in the centre and go towards the edge. Older rotating-disc media like vinyl records started from the edge and went towards the centre so it couldn't have been for historical reasons. I am looking ...

Oh hey, it's nearly April and Lenovo's "Shipping in February" Thinkpad X1 Yoga is still nowhere to be seen
Why am I not surprised

@DavidPostill and @bwDraco both provided great answers, too. I am normally chained to a desk at work on January 1st doing end-of-year updates and paperwork, and once I saw that question/answers it immediately went into my Favorites collection!

11:24 PM
agreed
i should go make toast

@Burgi I find answering questions typically gets you reputation faster ;p

@JourneymanGeek i don't have time these days

@Burgi pop in on a weekend. Scan the front page. Post awesome answer.
Rinse and repeat ;)
3k's not that hard

if i hadn't been going mental this past month trying to move in to my apartment i'd have done that
the first 50 was the hardest
oh you'll never guess what... bt openreach buggered up the installation of my phone line

20 hours to your new mod ;p
3

11:34 PM
@JourneymanGeek, we had a few outstanding candidates in the group, and it's a shame that we can only pick one of them.

@Run5k the decision to have one rather than two was based mostly on how much trouble we were having with flag quantity

@JourneymanGeek, that is understandable, and I'm sure that the other candidates will still be around to make the same great contributions until the next mod vacancy occurs.

And we essentially have no issues with simple flags. If there's any delay, its either cause there's no conscious moderators or no one's decided what to do ;)
@Run5k I do hope so
Most of the candidates in the last election seem to be really quiet since.

IIRC there are zero candidates in common between this election and the previous, which I think is unusual on SE
Probably just because of the long timespan between them though

@BenN It never came up and we've mostly been on top of things.

11:38 PM
Really? That's too bad. We have at least three great contributors in this election, and I can't envision any of them disappearing after tomorrow's results.

Off the top of my head, most of them weren't active. Raystafarian was, but somewhat tapered off
and 2-3 years seems about normal for this site
We don't have the level of flags/burnout SO does

While I have only been around for 5+ months, I like to think I have been quite active during my short tenure. That being said, out of the other ten candidates on that list I only recognize two names.

I hate moderators
So I voted for 3 of them
Makes sense

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I haven't answered anything in like a month... teach me your secrets :(

11:54 PM
@Bob quite literally just scan the front page every so often ;p
@Run5k I only recognise 4 ;p

@JourneymanGeek, my goodness! Well, I suppose that people change jobs, their scope of responsibilities changes (higher or lower), and of course, occasionally real life takes precedence.

@Run5k naw, they haven't been all that active
Personally I go for "I know this guy" > candidate score > reputation
