Excluding power outages is cheating

Our power went out 3 weeks ago. We didn't notice until we got in on Monday morning

@MDMarra ACT OF GOD MOTHERFUCKER! Uptime DENIED! :-)
2
@Basil Generator fuel exhausted?

@Basil My phone starts buzzing if the power goes out for more than 15 seconds. No backup generator, so after ~10 minutes everything shuts down.

@voretaq7 We have a million dollar UPS and two diesel generators with months of fuel in the building :)

then how'd you notice your power was out?
(or more accurately, What in the name of all the unholy gods is wrong with your monitoring that you didn't know you were on generator power? :-)

8:09 PM
@voretaq7 or why they had no fuel?

@voretaq7 Someone got paged, but not us :)

Q: DNS settings for domain controller with dual nics one facing internet directly and one to router

Ravi I have a server with 2 NICs. One of them is connected directly to the internet (it's on public IP) The other NIC has a private IP and connects to our router which is connected to the internet also (different public IP) Now, this server has been setup to be a domain controller and has the DNS rol...

oh wow.. not only is it a dual-homed DC, but it's facing the internet.. jeeeebus

@pauska Well, come on... you don't want to put both interfaces on the Internet. That would be just silly. ;)

@pauska only on one side though right?
the other side is somewhere safe... like the all-access admin subnet

Q: DPM 2010 has allocated 100% of our storage pool. What are our options?

l0c0b0xData Protection Manager 2010 has allocated 100% of our storage pool. We currently have all our protection groups set to 'automatically grow the volumes' [checkbox]. As we were trying to add a backup member (a network folder), we received the following error : "There is insufficient free...

8:16 PM
@l0c0b0x 1. Delete stuff 2. Get more storage 3. Shrink the allocations

@basil Heh. I think the ONLY thing we get right around here is that we run the big 12cyl Cat generator every Saturday for 2 hours and we keep 3 days of fuel on-site. Not bad for a non-profit homeless services agency.

@ChrisS drink more beer.

@voretaq7 Jack and Coke for me thank you.

@ChrisS Pass the troubleshooting vodka!

Q: What is a valid target for Spam Assassin's sa-learn?

Evan CarrollI'd like to train my Spam Assassin with some crap that it's missed, however I'm confused. With sa-learn I could target: raw message text-message (body) html (body) What one of those options is this best. I'd like to pull the message right out of my E-mail box. Is it of any concern if the raw-...

I thought that was a perfectly good question.

Look at his comment.
on my answer

8:42 PM
What's wrong with it?

I don't get it.

This is better than a 3 Stooges comedy routine.

popcorn

LOL

8:42 PM
lol

...
We don't always vote at the same time we're answering.

I vote that we break out the Hammer of Loving Persuasion.

Why not, you're only there to answer to get votes yourselves but you won't actually vote others up? Even though you think it's a good question?

I think that's a problem with Server Fault -- some people just use it for career advancement.

8:45 PM
LOL

I typically vote after there have been a few answers.
but yes, this is all for career advancement..
me, the $400k/year sysadmin...

Yeah, we basically spend hours here just tooling around. Chatting, cleaning up the community, keeping things tidy, all so that we can advance our careers.

@ewwhite I think you've got an extra goose egg in there.

VOTING STANDARDS: Y U NO HAVE NONE?!

@ewwhite We need to talk :P

8:46 PM
Is that what 18K exp gets you?

:-X

I assure you @EvanCarroll , every place you've ever been or seen, everything you've ever done, there's someone out there in the world who uses it mostly for career advancement. Ya need to get over that.

@Adrian as opposed to the pneumatic hammer of cow-killing?

@Basil Oh?

@ewwhite y'all hiring? :)
2

8:47 PM
@voretaq7 No, compared to the more painless Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Mine's got a 3 foot haft and an 4kg head on it.

@Adrian I'm just saying that if the question is worth answer, and you don't upvote it too -- than you're probably a pretty bad netizen.

@ewwhite Well not really. I just need to make what you make instead of what I make.

@EvanCarroll you're only there to answer to get votes yourselves So how did you acquire the mind reading equipment to be so sure you know others' motives? Some of us answer for the sheer joy of participating in a field we love and to help others out.

@EvanCarroll In case you missed it earlier: quickmeme.com/meme/36cc1l

I took time to write that question, if you're going to answer it the least you could do is thank me for asking it with an upvote.

8:48 PM
@EvanCarroll I'm pretty sure the answer is worth more to the community than the upvote

@EvanCarroll I can think of many times I'd answer a question but not vote for it

@EvanCarroll @EvanCarroll I do Mental Health IT and I've been on the net since the late 80s. You can lecture me in about 15-20 years.

Time to stop feeding the troll, folks. Just for reference, there is an ignore button.

@Adrian I'll keep mine:

@EvanCarroll You do not understand the culture of ServerFault; where it's been, where it is or where it's going.

8:48 PM
(Disclaimer: I don't own one. Where can I acquire one? :-)

@MDMarra Right. It's just SO EASY, somedays.

I'm not a Troll. I just came to ServerFault to build my rep on a lunch break.

you're doing it wrong.

@EvanCarroll And that's your problem.

Career advancement? So wait, if I show my boss how much time I spend here I can get a raise?

8:49 PM
Aaron Copley: No by bettering the question db?

@AaronCopley NO WAI!!!

You should come to SF to participate in the community and ask questions that you'd like the answer to, and to answer the questions of others to pay it forward. Not to "build up your rep"

@Basil Not all from one job...

Bye now

@MDMarra feed troll. Troll grow big and strong. Then we kill and eat?

8:49 PM
I'm asking questions that I notice are not yet asked, but should have been asked already.

@AaronCopley Wait, I'm my own boss. How does that work?

ooh. The ignore feature does work really well. Insta-Zot.

@Adrian Isn't it nice. I'm about to click ignore myself not that my point's been made

@WesleyDavid Take the rest of the afternoon off!

My biggest problem with the Ignore button, is that sometimes you see someone talking to someone you ignored, and you want to see what was said. Then you have to go to the archives. :-(

8:50 PM
@EvanCarroll That's actually good, so thanks for that, but don't get bent out of shape over rep. Rep is pretty much meaningless.

@AaronCopley <cool hand luke>Some people....you just can't reach.</cool hand luke>

WesleyDavid: I don't see you upvoting the question, if "rep" is so meaningless why are you still all talk?

Oh, he is a real troll
2
I was going with "legitimate douche", but I see now he's just trying to start a fight

Is it time for one of the blue-names to escort this fine gentleman from the room?

@EvanCarroll You need to put an '@' sign in front of someone's name if you want them to see it. This isn't irc.

8:52 PM
@EvanCarroll There is value to asking questions that haven't been asked (even if you already know the answer) so they can be made canonical.

Rep whoring however is most decidedly frowned upon and will earn you nothing but ridicule. We are a dour bunch of sysadmins and if our users aren't providing enough cannon fodder we'll happily turn on someone like a pack of sharks.

If you want rep let it happen naturally. If you beg for it, expect to be smacked.

@EvanCarroll I can't upvote now because I've used up my votes for the day. I'll get a 40-vote reload in three hours, however I'm less inclined to encourage your participation if this is how you'll behave.

@MDMarra meh, maybe in another minute or two. I'm watching a server deployment push in the other window. This is WAY more fun :-)

brb, I think I'll downvote it just because

I'm trying to make sure I understand the crux

@voretaq7 I first read that as "snarks". I'm not sure which is more amusing.

8:53 PM
@P-Diddy: UPVOTE OR DIE!!!

I'm not trying to start a fight.. I just don't understand why 25 people tell me rep doesn't matter. And, at the same time they refuse to use the "upvote" action.

@Basil Tee he. =]

(now, is that popcorn plain, buttered, or caramel-coated?)

@EvanCarroll asked a question, @ewwhite answered it, and @EvanCarroll asked why nobody (especially the answer-er) upvoted the question?
Is that the situation in a nutshell?

@Aaron Yes.

8:54 PM
@Aaron Yes

Future President of the United States, Dr. Sri Sri Evan John Carroll GBE (born September 10 1985 CE – never) aka The Evan Carroll, or simply The Evan is totally awesome. He is known for his ability to split water as he walks on it. Evan is currently employed at Dealermade as a highly senior computer software engineer or programmer and ruthlessly wastes lots of time improving technical and local articles on Wikipedia. His public distaste and abhorrence for sarcasm is well known. Also known, is his willingness to create words when they don't exist, claiming them for the betterment of t...

I don't even

@EvanCarroll I would have upvoted the question, except you asked... Also, we get a limited number of votes per day.

@EvanCarroll It matters to an extent, yes. It's a tool that is used within this culture. But comparatively it doesn't matter enough to get this upset over. Look, I've given answers that I think are awesome that never got upvoted. Questions too. It's just... numbers on a site on the internet. Go hug someone.

What's wrong with asking for an upvote on a question done well?

8:54 PM
Nothing at all. I have lots of highly-upvoted questions

@EvanCarroll It's culturally frowned upon here. Looked at like shilling.

That's in the best interest of both the questioner to be incentivized and the community to see the question for what it's worth...

begging for upvotes is like begging for spare change - the more aggressive you are about it the more likely you are to be picked up by the cops.

Sit quietly and upvotes will happen naturally if people find your question *useful* (just because we answer something doesn't mean the question is really great or meets the standards that appear in the pop-up when you hover over the upvote arrow)

@EvanCarroll It's up to us, the community, to decide if a question is well done. You have an inherent conflict of interest.

@EvanCarroll asking for upvotes is a little bit of looking for adoration

8:55 PM
@EvanCarroll Because you came in here acting like you were owed upvotes. No one owes you anything. It's possible for someone to answer a question that they find mundane but know the answer to. There is a 40-vote-per day limit (if you cast at least 10 on questions), otherwise it's 30. Why would I vote on something that doesn't interest me. If anything, you should have come here to thank @ewwhite for answering you, not give him shit for not upvoting along with his answer.

I would have upvoted the question anyway!

@EvanCarroll It shifts the focus from providing great content to simply grabbing virtually meaningless numbers. Make good content, you'll get rewarded with upvotes. Not all the time, but generally speaking, you'll get some numbers tossed your way.

@Scott Pack: But, the community does ultimately get to decide.. I just made a reminder and asked why the question was good enough for an answer, but not for an upvote.

Damn. I have a meeting in 5 minutes. I'm sure this will be MUCH more entertaining.

Can we vote for someone to leave the room?

8:56 PM
I only asked for transparency, it shouldn't be like pulling teeth.

@EvanCarroll And why do you think a room of high-rep regulars needs a "reminder" to vote?

@EvanCarroll you are a troll. you are a very well known troll.

I was going to check my Barracuda unit which uses Spamassassin and see how it fed its bayesian database.

@Iain is he actually a legit troll?
As in, he's done this elsewhere?

@MDMarra I hope he's a troll
I always hope they're trolls though

8:57 PM
And...ignored

Looks like he's got a sockpuppet starring all his stuff

@MDMarra: Isn't everyone worthy of a good reputation on ServerFault owed a comparatively high amount of REPs on the service?

"owed" ?

@EvanCarroll Lots of good questions don't get upvoted. It happens. You're not singled out. As for asking - it is frowned upon because it shifts the focus away from the content and participation to just a big pecker measuring contest. Then we become Sexperts Exchange.

@MDMarra ... where's our sock?

8:57 PM
@Basil no, but you can click on someone's name and select ignore this user - works for me

Expert-sex-change

Ok, @Iain, @ChrisS, @voretaq7, seriously give him the boot

@Iain do not defame so. I am not a troll.

@MDMarra he's a legit troll- check out his wikipedia user page.

@MDMarra who ? ;)

8:58 PM
If we allow upvote whoring, I think we'll need a cheerleading squad to go with.
2

@MDMarra You and others keep feeding him; he's not doing anything worth kicking yet

@Adrian CHEERLEADERS!!!
That's what ServerFault needs!

@Adrian Yes please!

@WesleyDavid double-crested...

... Obviously @Wikipedia is proof of trollhood right, Wikipedia is just a crowdsourced poor man's version of Brittanica.
Quit it already. Calling people trolls is immature and does not advance your argument.

8:59 PM
@voretaq7 I can haz cheerleaders?
