10:00 AM
And JR is here. So maybe he can answer your queries :)
@Kenshin

Hello@JohnRennie

@JohnRennie can you please explain how a quantum radar works?
the wikipedia article is hard for me to understand

Hello @Kenshin

Hello Ramanujan

@Kenshin, in which level are you studying?

10:04 AM
@Ramanujan He has a job :P

@Kenshin, Job as a...?

In the financial sector
in Australia

@Kenshin, Oh . Aren't you a pure physicist?

no

@Kenshin, I am also planning to go to Australia for my higher education...

10:06 AM
It's good for a man to know physics, but not to only know physics
@Ramanujan cool what do you plan to study here?

user228700
@JohnR @Kenshin: Hello :-)

Hiya @Kaumudi.H how r u

@Kenshin, yeah ..i agree

user228700
I'm only OK. What about you?

I'm good
why only OK?

user228700
10:07 AM
When are ya going to Japan?

what happaned Kaumu?

@Kenshin, yet no decided... In your opinion, what would be good?better?best?

@Ramanujan I can't decide, it depends on what your passions are and what you're good at

@Kaumudi.H Morning

user228700
@Kenshin Lol, (moderate, not clinical) depression vepression :-P

10:09 AM
yeah studying will do that to you Kaumu

user228700
@JohnRennie Ur photo!!!

@Ramanujan you should also choose a course that has good job prospects

@Kenshin, I am good at Mathematics, Science, Accountancy,...

I would study one of the following:
1. Economics
2. Engineering
3. Medicine

@Kaumudi.H :-) I thought those photos had been lost forever, but unfortunately I found them at the bottom of a drawer.

10:10 AM
4. Mathematics/Stats (Stats has better prospects)
5. Finance/Actuarial
These have good jobs

@Kenshin, What is the scope for an Aeronautics Engineering?

I don't know but I'd say it would be a good choice

user228700
@JohnRennie Unfortunately? :-) In your profile picture, you stare down upon us all, as though u are the evil villain you have so longed to be so seeing you smile was...strange, to say the least :-P

any engineering job would give a decent income
6. Computer Science

@Kaumudi.H I was young and innocent in those days ...

10:11 AM
Computer science has great prospects and will likely improve

Yeah@Kenshin, I have heard about it...

user228700
@JohnRennie :-) Nostalgia much?

I have also heard that computeer engineer earn $12000 ++ in US..

per what?
per month?

@JohnRennie, Hello sir..

10:13 AM
@Kaumudi.H I had forgotten how much fun that trip was. We motorbiked from Cambridge to Rome. The outbound leg took us through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Austria and we came back through France.

@Kenshin, per month

@Ramanujan we usually quote salaries per year, and a computer scientist with experience would easily get $100,000 per year

Why is Economics #1? What about the MBA/Law program?

user228700
@JohnRennie Yes, I remember. You and a friend of yours from university, yes?

Yes

10:14 AM
@skillpatrol because of his skillset
Law is pretty boring and not many real law jobs around
the Law profession is flooded in Australia

@Kenshin, Oh. That's also quite good.

But I"m sure Law/MBA would be a good course

user228700
@JohnRennie I can't imagine how...exhilarating it must've been.

but usually you do an MBA in australia after you already have management experience

@Kenshin, what job opportunities are available for PhD in maths/

10:15 AM
lots

@Kenshin, such as.

@Kaumudi.H we weren't exactly exploring the wilderness, but it was fantastic to visit so many places I hadn't been to. I found my diary from the trip along with the photos and reread it last night with much enjoyment :-)

@Ramanujan sorry I misunderstood, there's not many jobs for maths PhD's unfortunately
I mean, they will be employed

user228700
Yaay, the diary! :-) Reading it was awesome, wasn't it?

but not necessarily in high paying jobs that utilize their expertise
it is better to have a degree in engineering than a maths PhD

10:17 AM
@Kenshin, what about chartered accountancy?

@Kaumudi.H I suspect with time you forget the boring and unpleasant bits, but I certainly remember it as the best holiday of my life (so far :-)

@Ramanujan yes that is a good job
you will get a stable income
probably up to $90,000 per year
on average
and if you do well you will probably get more
often though you need to do more than just a degree

user228700
@JohnRennie :-) It sounds next level.

You would need to do further study after degree to become "chartered"

I also found this (photo incoming ...):

10:18 AM
your work might pay for this

Joining a field of study just looking at potential income isn't a very good idea in my opinion...

2017 is right you have to balance your passions with earnings
but I think both need consideration

That's my pilot's licence to fly gliders!

It will be better to sit back and think what you want to really want to do

10:19 AM
If one has their passion without money they won't be happy
If one has money but not their passion they wont' be happy

user228700
@JohnRennie !!!

YOu need balance to be happy

From 1979, gosh that's a long time ago :-)

Congratulations @JohnRennie :)

user228700
@JohnRennie 20 years before I was even born! :-) And lol, yes, belated congratulations!

10:20 AM
@Kenshin, @2017, we must be able to sell ourselves in this competitive world with what we learn, isn't it?

The purpose of work is to earn money
So money should definitely be a consideration
But the more fun you have while making money the better
So if you hare having lots of fun, you can accept less money
because the fun is a form of compensation
Total compensation = Monetary + Intrinsic (i.e. enjoyment)
You should try to maximize total compensation

@Kenshin, yeah. I am in transitional phase now. so I am enquiring

@Ramanujan Sell yourself? Yuck! You are not a product to be sold. You are someone who has the power to change the future by excelling in fields which you love.

user228700
@Kenshin I have been refraining from participating in this conversation for I am certain that it will lead to other tangents. However, let me submit that this philosophy hasn't been accepted by those who have done the best work in their respective fields.

@Kaumudi.H you're right. I should clarify the purpose of a "job" is to make money

user228700
10:23 AM
^ I suppose, yes.

user228700
@JohnR: I upset Bernardo last night by saying this:

user228700
12 hours ago, by Kaumudi. H
@BernardoMeurer He certainly made for a much cuter nerd!

@Kenshin, what kind of further studies are to be done to be a "Chartered" accountant?

@Ramanujan it depends on your country, do you plan to work in Australia after graduation or India?
each country would have their own rules for how to be come "chartered". In Australia the degree is just the starting point then you probably need x years of work experience and sit additiaonl exams while working etc.

@Kenshin, If I got chance, I will definitely choose the best

10:25 AM
@Ramanujan is your family in Australia? It would be very hard to live away from family for a long period of time.

Agreed ^

what are we talking about

money

@Kenshin, Not my family.. but some of my relatives, brothers, uncles, etc..

@BalarkaSen Ramanujan is asking about the best professions for him..

10:26 AM
@BalarkaSen how to make the big bucks

LOL :D

@Ramanujan but what about your own family?

user228700
@BalarkaSen Work and JohnR's pictures from his road-trip of sorts.

what about your parents @Ramanujan, don't you want to stay with them?

@Kaumudi.H yes, I read back through last night's log. Oh well, Bernardo will get over it :-)

10:27 AM
@Kenshin, Of course ..i do

user228700
:-) I did clarify but oh well.

@Kenshin, what about Pharmaceutical?

@Kaumudi.H what do you mean by he made for a cuter nerd
@Ramanujan pharmacy sucks in Australia
no jobs, all low paying

@Kenshin It would? That depends highly on the type of person you are and the kind of bond you have with your family

user228700
@Kenshin Which part of this sentence is incomprehensible?

10:28 AM
@Kenshin, oh.

about 10 years ago it was the job everyone wanted
and the market was flooded lol

@Kenshin do a bankrobbery. what's the big deal?
4

^Balarka's got life all figured out

@Kaumudi.H did you mean John is cuter than Bernard?

@ACuriousMind I solved consciousness

10:29 AM
lol

@Kenshin, how much do engineer earn on average?

@BalarkaSen This is seriously awesome :D I was going to say: "Become an astrologer or politician" :'P
You broke the record :P

@Ramanujan I think engineers earn on average $90,000 to $100,000 per year but good ones and managers can earn up to $200,000+ per year

@BalarkaSen Congrats. Now solve world peace.
4

user228700
@Kenshin First of all, I wasn't aware that Bernardo identifies as a nerd rather than a geek. Secondly, well, not now but back in the day, it does look like he made for a cute nerd, what with the huge spectacles and all.

10:30 AM
@Kaumudi.H Obligatory skcd.
2

lol sorry @Kaumudi.H I don't know the context I just read your comment and saw Bernard was offended. I guess you weren't really saying Berno wasn't cute?
@Kaumudi.H btw do you think Berno is cute or not?

user228700
@Kenshin No, I was not! >.<

user228700
@Kenshin Yep, go ahead, throw me under the bus, everyone.

lol

I don't think "Berno" is an acceptable shortening of "Bernardo" :P

10:31 AM
you don't have to answer lol

user228700
@ACuriousMind :-P

user228700
...and he's not even here. I think it's up to him, what's acceptable and what's not.

@Kenshin, which is the most demanded engineering in Australia?

Why do you wanna go to Australia

@ACuriousMind cos it's awesome

10:33 AM
for money

lol

@ACuriousMind I was supposed to work on it but the president of US took up that job, so let's leave that to him

@Kenshin I prefer my fauna less deadly :)

@Ramanujan money isn't everything, don't sacrifice too much for money

user228700
@BalarkaSen What about poverty?

10:34 AM
@BalarkaSen :P

deleted just in case

like crocodile dundee?

@Ramanujan Civil engineers are most in demand
Civil engineers construct things like bridges, roads, canals, dams, buildings etc.

@Kaumudi.H Comrade Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin already has stuff to say about that.
Ok, I'm going to switch off the satire mode

user228700
@BalarkaSen :-P

10:37 AM
@Kenshin,Oh

@Ramanujan how much coin do you want to make?

Coin?

1 million coin. :P

bit coin
cha ching

go to zimbabwe then

10:38 AM
@Kenshin, I am thinking about engineering. But I also like chartered accountancy
@ACuriousMind, where are you from/

@Ramanujan they are totally different jobs

@Ramanujan Germany

With accountancy you will likely have a lot of spare time
the job is boring
but likely always have a job

@Kenshin, oh. its was nice talking to you. thanks.

np mate

10:41 AM
@ACuriousMind, are you a pure physicist?

Pure? !!! :-)

@JohnRennie, Degree in Physics.

Nothing is pure nowadays :P

and did his parents both have physics degrees

10:43 AM
@Ramanujan Depends on what you mean by that. Some would call me a mathematician.

@ACuriousMind what is your level?

@ACuriousMind, why??

@Kenshin level 85

not bad

@Ramanujan Why what?

10:45 AM
you can probably make the physics guild with that
do you have a PhD @ACuriousMind

No, I'm a master's student

@ACuriousMind, mathematician / physicist??""

ah cool
@ACuriousMind were you born in Germany?
you speak very good english

@Ramanujan Sorry, still not sure what you want to know - what I do involves abstract mathematics and theoretical physics. Whether you want to call me a mathematician or a physicist depends on your view where physics ends and where mathematics begins

He writes good English :P You never heard him speak! @Kenshin

10:47 AM
@Kenshin Yes

@2017 true he could be using google translate
@ACuriousMind what is your opinion on Brittain wanting to leave the EU?

@Kenshin LOL :D

@ACuriousMind is obviously a mathematician
I'm not quite sure I ever saw him do something really physicky.

I have.

Quick @ACuriousMind, without looking, what's the energy of the first hydrogen orbital

10:49 AM
@ACuriousMind, Why aren't you much active on MSE?

@Kenshin I'm really not in the mood for discussing that
@Slereah 13.6 eV

Sorry, the answer was -13.6 eV

np I'll take that as a negative opinoin

Off by 200%
Quite bad

@Ramanujan Because I don't like it there - all the homeworky no-effort questions and boring integrals drown out everything that might interest me

10:51 AM
Depends. If you meant binding energy then it will be positive.

@Ramanujan please wait for ACM's AMA session to ask so many questions

Yeah MSE is pretty bad
PSE is also pretty bad but in a different way

@Slereah lol, well, I'm no experimentalist!

The bad questions in PSE are more "I don't know anything about physics but I have this question about a very complicated physics topic"

@Kenshin, AMA?

10:52 AM
yeah breo

What's that?

30
Q: Physics Stack Exchange "Ask me anything" (AMA)

DanielSankPurpose The user base of Physics Stack Exchange is rather diverse in terms of cultural background, career progress, field of expertise, and personality. While the discussion in hbar is lively, it is mostly focused on physics, with some side conversations on a variety of topics from cooking to fa...

@Kenshin I'll perhaps do one when I have a finished master's thesis I can talk about, but no promises

aw k

@ACuriousMind, If everyone thinks like that. Then where are the new self learners supposed to learn?

10:53 AM
lol

@Ramanujan What?
Sorry, I don't understand your question

yeah @ACuriousMind they have to learn somewhere!

?

@Slereah Yeah, I don't like those much either

10:55 AM
@ACuriousMind, Everyone has difficulties.

@Ramanujan That's me.

Bad PSE questions are like
What happens if you put a black hole in a black hole???
Also throw in a cosmic string
Why not

@Ramanujan what are you talking about?

Bad PSE questions are funny. Bad MSE questions are annoying. :D

@ACuriousMind, Why aren't you supposed to help in homework like questions?

10:56 AM
oh

not even annoying, just boring

cos homework is for students to do themselves

@Kenshin,//

Bad MSE question are like "How can I show that this function converges"

@Ramanujan for homework we use physics.qandaexchange.com

10:57 AM
@Slereah Now, on rpg.SE that'd be "What happens if I put a bag of holding inside a bag of holding?" and would attract several carefully reasoned rules-lawyer answers :P
@Ramanujan Oh, I don't know whether I'm supposed to or not, but I just don't want to. I find solving exercises boring and much prefer conceptual questions.

@Kenshin, for maths?

@Ramanujan Do you help your juniors in solving their homework on MSE/PSE/Chem SE or real life? Most people are too busy!

@Ramanujan no for physics. Maths.SE allows homeowkr

I also think that answering any given homework question rarely helps the actual understanding of many people unless you write an exceptional answer. And I care more about understanding than about people finishing their homework for the week.

We also worry about juniors learning too much and then competing with us for jobs
