GAAAAAAH
9
I finally fixed it.
The bug that was giving me problems for the last three hours.
And guess what - the bug was already fixed.
I spent three hours debugging a problem that was already fixed.
Shakes head.

@NathanOsman Congratulations ! Give yourself a bit of a break and tomorrow you can continue fighting more bugs with more resolve :D

Closes a gazillion Chrome Inspector windows, and Gimp, and JSFiddle, and...
On the plus side, now I can finish what I was working on.

6:29 AM
@NathanOsman was it like the time I spent hours trying to figure out why something was working only to realize that when I redid the directory structure I opened the new file in the browser, but atom resaved the original so all my new code was being written to an old file?
Anyway. Anyone have any good MP3 player recommendations? I know they're our of style but I actually need one.
RIP my zune.

6:42 AM
I rely on phone and YouTube for all my music needs nowadays
I used to have some mp3 player way back when i was in highschool but it eventually died

@Seth How much space do you need?
I still have my Creative MuVo v100 somewhere...
It only had 1 GB of storage but it did everything.
Microphone, scrolling lyrics, equalizer, folders, backlight, etc.

Ran off a single AAA battery.
Usually got about 14-16 hours per battery.
Oh wow, it's still being sold: amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000ZA57P8/…
$85 - that's a fair price.

I kinda miss my old ipod
those things killed off everything else, and its pretty hard to get something that'll hold like 150 or so gb of music

The ones with the mini hard drive?

6:55 AM
@Seth basically your options are probably between fiio and cowon
@NathanOsman yup

@JourneymanGeek Cowon - aren't they the folks that made JetAudio?

@JourneymanGeek To this day, I'll never know how those things survived so well. Hard drives + bumps usually don't go together well.
@JourneymanGeek I remember using that a lot back in the days of Win98.

@NathanOsman I'm sad no one made a large capacity SSD based one

You can get 128 GB microSD cards now.
That's probably the next best thing.
My MuVo could playback WMA files. Not everyone knows this but WMA files are just ASF files with an audio track. WMV are ASF files with a video and audio track. Therefore, anything that plays WMAs can play the audio track of WMVs. I was quite thrilled to discover this.

7:12 AM
yup

@NathanOsman so . . .don't be surprised if you see me unsubbing and subbing back again to your youtube channel. Aside from youtube being glitchy about subscribers ( and by that I mean apparently if you unsubscribe from someone it counts as two people ) , I think it also sometimes doesn't count people . . .because I unsubbed to yours and subbed back again. 14 before , 14 subs after - as if I never even clicked that button

No worries.

8:05 AM
Hmm... Flask's dev server doesn't play nice with Chrome for Android.

1 hour later…
9:06 AM
Im so cloz

where's that?
U&L?

I'm on only 1138 there.
Maybe I should focus on other sites than AU a bit more as well.

I answered a very trivial question there the other day and it got ridiculously upvoted. I got 340 points out of it I think, but it got up to +84 o.O

rofl
@Zanna that's happened to my sock once
which was annoying

then the question got closed as a dupe of a question closed as no repro with only 6 upvotes, which makes no sense - if something is a dupe target, then by definition it cannot be no repro!!
@JourneymanGeek haha why annoying?

9:16 AM
@Zanna cause its supposed to be a low rep sock

hahaha you don't want too many privs haha

I primarily use it for 1) untrusted PCs 2) Snarky answers about Kali Linux 3) seeing what the site is like for a low rep user.
yup

very smart

lol

9:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek You could always spend some bounties...

@ByteCommander yup

@Zanna Heh. That's all too accurate :)

I comment-answered a Kali question on U&L yesterday with a link to an old AU question haha
Many thanks @Zanna. Works like a charm — Tom Anderson 12 hours ago

Hi everyone. I tried windows and I noticed a behavior

When I click on a video in windows explorer, it brings the media player to the front, and media player plays the video. now if I click on another video, while the player is playing, it will bring the media player to the front again. Using nautilus, when you click on the second video, it won't bring the player to the front. how can we have such behavior in Ubuntu?

11:41 AM
Maybe it would be best if you post that question on the main site?

I'm kind of scared about my english

12:01 PM
No need to be.

12:46 PM
@MostafaShahverdy First of all, your English is fine and better than most. Anyway, don't worry about it. We do not expect users to write perfect English, all we ask is that they try to write in English. So just ask and don't worry, if there are any English mistakes, someone will edit them.

I just removed a PCI GPU from my system and now i only have one monitor working, any clues how to fix that ?
I feel merely handycapped without my three screens

Oli
@Videonauth Put it back?

yeah but for what use a second GPU if you not use it?

@terdon I am never going back to U&L again. ever :=D

1:45 PM
@Rinzwind ?

@Videonauth but you used it for the 3 monitors :=)

@Rinzwind nope they all are on my primary card

@terdon made a comment. user read 1/2 the comment and claimed I was wrong :P even a mod read only 1/2 the comment :\

and worked on my primary card for months

@Videonauth then those 3 should still be working :=D

1:47 PM
@Rinzwind Where? The last comment of yours I see was this summer.

sadly they dont

@terdon today :=D

any maybe settings files ican remove to make the machine looking them up again?

AH! he totally admitted I am right :X just now @terdon
maybe I will go back to u&l oneday >:-D

@Rinzwind Where's all this stuff going down? I don't see anything in your profile!

1:48 PM
already removed /etc/X11/ xorg.conf and ~/.config/monitors.xml

@Videonauth there should only be 1 xorg.conf :X
oh wait
I am wrong there @terdon :X it was SU

Ah, that makes more sense. That place's a dump!

I hate it when an AU q gets moved around :D

I blame their canine overlord.

lol

1:51 PM
@Rinzwind Don't you mean SO or something? You only have one answer on SU as well.

since when is a comment an answer? >:)

Found it! Yay! And yes, you were indeed right.

@Rinzwind ok its definetively a software side problem, just booted from my rescue stick and there all three displays where working, now just to find what went wrong here

hmm which one should be closed though?

I just closed the one on U&L since there's a dedicated "cross-posted" close reason there.

awesome

2:32 PM
Ok, I have finally figured out my emacs problem.
I think
But no one's looking at my Q!

@terdon should I have used my Legendary status on SU to force my correct comment on them? :=D

ASKUBUNTU IS MUCH BETTER THAN SUPERUSER
there I dare someone to star that on the SU chat

Yesh - has the MS taint

@AaronHall link me up to the q!

2:42 PM
3 views in 15 minutes, probably 2 were a bot: askubuntu.com/questions/881930/…
and the other was me... :/ lol

1st idea: "hold" the Ubuntu version

@Rinzwind what question?

hold?

sudo apt pin ...
I can't find a command that does that.

2:43 PM
echo "{package} hold" | sudo dpkg --set-selections
@AaronHall I did :=D
or ...
sudo apt-mark hold package_name
That might stop Ubuntu from updating it

@AaronHall or give the package a slightly different name

counterpart: sudo apt-mark unhold package_name
JourneymanGeek good one :) and that ^^

I swear I've been bugging people in #ubuntu and googling for this forever. No one said hold, everyone said pin.

Giving the package a different name is the "right" way to do it IMO

"pin decides priority of archived packages against installed one.
hold just hold installed package."
I agree with JourneymanGeek :-) Renaming is better.

2:46 PM
will I have to type something other than emacs & to launch it?

Oh and pin only works with apt

so why does debian get to use "emacs" and then just arbitrarily increment the major version number to whatever it wants?

Yeah, I've seen that. So what?
Is the answer that it's a metapackage?

Its following those version numbers

2:51 PM
Didn't I put in a similar link in my Q?

and the version number is for the metapackage not emacs
Not when I saw it

Yep, it's there! :)
so if I call it emacs26, will I have to type emacs26 to launch it?

I don't think so

(I obviously am not a package management expert...)

Oli
That all depends on what you compile. A package is just a collection of files with a name. It doesn't mean you have to call your binaries (the actual files) specific things.

2:55 PM
A package literally is "These are some files - I need you to check if the prerequisites are there, and if not install them copy the the files here, run these scripts"

ok
so I was wrong to let checkinstall use the default
now I'm setting the name to emacs26

ha oli answered it :D +1 :=)

Oli
@AaronHall I feel like I could keep adding bullets to that but at some point I'm just going to have rewritten the documentation on packaging. Also keep in mind that emacs26 is still in development. 25.1 is the latest stable release.

3:14 PM
@Oli if I couldn't find the relevant info, you're not doing anything redundant.
I still think it's not good that they gave the metapackage an arbitrary version number, but maybe they would need to roll back, and someone on autoupdate would not get the rolledback version if they decremented the number.

3:29 PM
Greetings!
@AaronHall Limitation to how archives work, it would be something along the lines of higherversion-0~actuallyLowerVersion or however Debian would handle that
@AaronHall this is also a headache for, say, PPA maintainers like myself - I have to always have my PPA version higher than whatever's in the repositories, esp. for nginx which I merge into the repos, so I end up having to have some type of incrementation, even if it's the package rev. number. (nginx, at least, is sane with versioning, so is the debian nginx team, so things're a little easier there heh)

OK, ibus I am so done with your shenanigans
Back to fcitx and sogou pinyin

3:53 PM
Hello :)

@cl-netbox morning

I see.

@Serg Good morning ! :) Got mail ? :)

@AaronHall this does make things evil, yes, but usually such "evils" are out of our hands :P
@cl-netbox Good Chaos to you!

@cl-netbox the hangouts ? yes.

3:58 PM
@ThomasWard Hello my evil brightness ! :D
@Serg A mail reply would be nice ... :)

@cl-netbox I was a bit busy yesterday, so had no time to respond, but i will do later today :)

@Serg okay :)

Can we get rid of this rant or is anybody familiar with and willing to explain the Ubuntu scrollbar design thoughts? askubuntu.com/q/881960/367990
Huh?
Uhm... @cl-netbox...
Your green default icon is spreading.

@cl-netbox Oh, I'm still the pure embodiment of darkness.

Now I also see it in the transcript from my home Ubuntu laptop.

4:02 PM
and I can be quite evil when I have to be.
I'm just not by default.

@ByteCommander I am on red hat ... firefox ESR 45.7 ... :)

@ByteCommander this is handled now.

@ThomasWard Thanks for the orbital strike.
@cl-netbox What does that have to do with what I see in the browsers of my machines?

@ByteCommander It's closed. But where in that off topic but, frankly, absolutely spot on and justified, rant did the OP swear?

@ByteCommander phasered, but same difference.
@terdon canned comments are annoying aren't they

4:07 PM
Ah, that one's canned? I see. Yeah, @ByteCommander please remove irrelevant parts of canned comments before posting.

@terdon wat?
Which comment?

Rants and swearing are definitely not appreciated here. Maybe you should try again and post a new question, politely asking for how the changes you would like can be made. We also can not foretell the future for obvious reasons. — Byte Commander 11 mins ago
The OP didn't swear, did they?

I am not using canned food. All my comments were grown individually and by hand.
IIRC there were some swear words in it.

@ByteCommander :)

@ByteCommander maybe nothing ... but ask SE to fix it ... I see the blue avatar cl

4:08 PM
@ByteCommander I don't see any. Just a very justified rant posted in the wrong place.
(don't get me wrong, you are absolutely right to downvote/close/flag/nuke whatever, that is not a question and doesn't belong here; I just happen to agree with the sentiment expressed)

Actually after reading it again, carefully, you are right.
My memory tricked me and invented things that were not there :P

@ByteCommander And the tone of the message didn't help. Swearing would have fit right in.

pipes a stream of bytes from /dev/urandom into @ByteCommander's stdin

Anyway, no harm done, I just edited the comment and removed the swearing bit,

Feel free to remove that phrase about swearing out of my comment using your diamond cutter...

4:11 PM
@ThomasWard oh, then I better should hide ... :D

@ByteCommander i already did :P

Oh. Lagging network today again.

about 4 minutes ago
y'all slow

But edited comments do not refresh themselves, right?
It only appeared after F5ing

nope, you gotta f5 the page :)

4:12 PM
@ThomasWard we're not slow, we're compiling

I do wish people would stop bloody designing bloody interfaces as a one-size-fits-all, we-all-use-tablets-now-and-screw-computers.

@Serg says the person who's compiling using a single core processor.
How did you compile Ruby from scratch on such an evil processor? :P

Why do I need the same UI on my phone, tablet and computer? I have 2 24inch screens, thank you, USE THEM!
Grrrr

@ThomasWard dual core actually. But what can I say, I am a poor college student

@terdon That's something I often solve by F12 and manually expanding the fixed-width divs in the HTML site...
Or are you talking about native applications?

4:14 PM
@ByteCommander I'm talking about the unity "feature" to cripple scrollbars.

Also, whom on the gnome-terminal dev team do I have to smack for expecting URI's from clipboard instead of plain text ?

And the "feature" of having huge clunky buttons in the side bar.
And the "feature" that requires me to click and drag up on the GDM screen in order to log in.

I have nothing against the scrollbars. Only against "pestilential hamburger buttons".

Mmmm,hamburger

@ByteCommander Heh, part of the same general trend, I think. Gnome/Unity are convinced the pc is dying and just ignores those of us who actually work on Linux, thank you, and can't move to a tablet.

4:19 PM
Knoppix question askubuntu.com/q/881970/367990 (VTC please)

Well, the world has changed and we have convertible laptops and such. I actually like the fact that Unity is trying to pursue convergence. Although maybe it could be implemented as "opt-in" feature

@Serg I really, really hate it. Instead of having native interfaces designed to work well on the hardware they run on, we get some kind of bastard beast that kinda works kinda everywhere.
Jack of all trades, master of none.

@terdon and that's what I'm trying to say: ideally convergence would be op-in feature, where you have a desktop environment that is . . . well, for desktop . . .and if you want it to adapt to laptop/tablet - click a button, and you're there. Or maybe even there's some hardware detection mechanism that does that for you automatically. But aside from that, personally I came to love Unity over time.
I watched Mark Shuttleworth's presentation once about Unity's design, and it actually makes sense why they implemented certain things in a certain fashion. But that's just me

4:35 PM
@Serg I came to love Unity over time ... me too, but from the first moment ! :)
@Serg and me ... :)

^ liking Unity

On the other hand, GNOME 3 fell out of my favor lately. Some of the things they do make absolutely no sense. For instance, in order to display App Indicators in actually the top panel, one has to install an extension. I have to do more clicks and figure out which menu is which.
Desktop icons are also disabled by default, if I'm not mistaken. Like . . .why ?

@Serg Because you're supposed to sit in front of your screen and gaze at the stunning minimalistic beauty of the interface. Providing useful tools would spoil that.

lol

Sounds about right . . .

4:43 PM
@cl-netbox I never cared, Unity vs. Gnome vs. LXDE vs. LXQT. I only needed evils such as my TERMINAL and a file browser and a web browser.
99% of what I still do today is CLI done, not GUI lol

I guess the GUI feature I use the most is expo. I like being able to move the mouse to a corner of the screen and see all open windows. Even if most of those are terminals.

@ThomasWard in my case "a bit" less than 99 % :D

:P
holy crap, lxc can be useful for small server test instances o.O
new favorite thing: lxc xD

My work workspace. 2 browser windows, slack, mysql workbench, emacs and N terminals.

Nice background
And bunch of terminator windows :D

4:47 PM
@Serg Yeah, it's vladstudio. I've been using his stuff for years.

Nice, I like his clocks. Kinda steampunk style

@ThomasWard new ? hahaha use the latest lxd version from the PPA

@cl-netbox 99% of my stuff is already virtualized in ESXi
i needed a crappy Yakkety image to test something :P

Well, here's my desktop right now. Originally, Ubuntu 16.04, launcher on the bottom ( for now ). Ubuntu Kylin theme

and didn't want to bother VPNing :)

Usually cluttered with terminal windows too and or browser windows.

@cl-netbox probably will. but as long as it loads right now is fine
i just needed to check a startup program heh

The wallpaper is actually a slideshow of bunch of server rooms. I'm kinda indecisive about my wallpapers and change them somewhat frequently. Themes change too. It could be Jinan city, or tech stuff, or steampunk stuff, or gradients, or whatever. I'm like Picasso and have wallpaper periods

wow i had over 250MB of updates and didn't know o.O
LANDSCAPE IS NOT DOING ITS JOB AAAAAAH!

@ThomasWard lxd images

5:01 PM
@cl-netbox actually no
most of it was mesa updates
and a massive Wine update

5:28 PM
@ThomasWard An Orbital Strike needed askubuntu.com/a/881990/529390

@Hizqeel flagged as rude ! :) Hi Hizqeel ! :)

@cl-netbox Hi o/ How are you doing?

@Hizqeel not fine today ... my main machine has a hardware issue (display cable - motherboard connection in the notebook most probably is broken) and so had to send it to service ... now I'm on an old and slow machine from 2008 ... :(

5:47 PM
@cl-netbox ohh.... and I got banned from SO Review for 5 days :( ;( :( :(

@Hizqeel why this ?

I accidentally clicked on NO ACTION NEEDED on NAN :( :( and they banned me o.o

@Hizqeel For ONE wrong edit ???

@cl-netbox yes That's what I know so far .... FOR JUST ONE WRONG REVIEW
5 days ;(

@Hizqeel handled

5:54 PM
@Hizqeel Can you please have a look and un-ban him @ThomasWard ? :)

hm?

@ThomasWard @Hizqeel was banned for ONE wrong edit / review as he told me a moment ago. :)

@cl-netbox I better wait for 5 days

i cant undo review bans
just like q-bans or a-bans

@cl-netbox it was a late answer / review bann
@cl-netbox I don't think Thomas can undo that and on SO specifically

5:58 PM
and yeah i cant affect other sites

@ThomasWard The other day @terdon un-banned @Zanna (if I didn't get it wrong) ... hmmm ...

I find it mildly amusing how people assume that just because we're a university lab technicians, we're also supposed to know how to do Xcel, Minitab, <whatever other software> that their professor required.
We're not tutors
