I have only tested this on Windows yet. But keep in mind that the C build gets slowed down by cygwin emulation, were as Rust is a native build.
I found what making cheddar slow btw:
Literal Parsing

     Average: 0.05 ms
it is parser :D
The C project uses clang with Ofast et al. btw.
@Downgoat That's one big onebox.
@Downgoat Then it's only startup time
@Downgoat Make parser fast again.
22:01
@TuxCopter Yes
and for each test is restarts parser so yeah
@Downgoat Seriously though, you should create a bytecode.
I should try with precompiled bytecode cheddar
Python does that.
@wizzwizz4 already done

22:01
@Mego And that's without any remote crates
Anonymous
That's ridiculous
The executable size is insane, too.
when trying the online rust program thingy, I get this:
rustc 1.15.0-beta.3 (a035041ba 2017-01-07)

timeout triggered!
Anonymous
So it's called Rust because your computer rusts while it compiles
7
I wonder if rust is the cause of xkcd 303 "compiling"
@ConorO'Brien That's probably just someone who forgot "-j" when makeing.
Yes. Rust needs so much CPU power that the humidity in the air is electrolysed, and the oxygen produced rusts the computer.
@TuxCopter 10/10 science.
@mınxomaτ TIL this is a thing O_O TYVM
You didn't know -j? How did you live up until this point?
22:05
@betseg Very slowly
I totally forgot -j is a thing
@betseg I ate existing cheese while new cheese built
@Downgoat If now Cheddar is rapid to build then it's no longer cheddar because cheddar is long to age
100000000000/4 is still a big number
Anonymous
@ConorO'Brien No, programmers being bored is the cause of that :P
22:07
When I get bored I just work on a new idea and totally forget about whatever is compiling.
@Mego true lol.
btw, can anyone can guess what a HandleApiCall function would do in context of Node.js
Anonymous
@Downgoat Handles an API call?
@Downgoat Handle the call of a pi?

I need a name for an image restoration software.

I quickly realized it was a bad idea asking this in here.

@mınxomaτ ReImage /s
@mınxomaτ try software recs maybe
@Downgoat Uhm what
Anonymous
He means he needs a name for his software
Indeed
22:12
oh
"Restoregoat"
Anonymous
I was serious about the TouchUp suggestion
@mınxomaτ Mendimage
lol I knew what he meant as soon as they asked it
or s/i/I/
@Mego This sounds like 2007 software. Also too similar to TuneUp (crapware).
22:13
Restoregoat is the most progressive name any software will have to-date I can bet you that
Is there some roman or greek god of, I don't know, reconstruction?
AFAIK no
@Downgoat That's a different kind of paint: lowes.com/pd/…
@mınxomaτ Vulcan god might be close enough
Too AMD
22:14
@mınxomaτ I now know what color I am painting my room
@Dennis tanks
@mınxomaτ I'm Res
@mınxomaτ so it like fixes corrupted image file?

@Downgoat Vulcan is the Roman name for Hephaestus

This is a demo of the new "low quality" mode for my inpainter. The image is about 2MP and processing time is reduced several orders of magnitude compared to it's big brother. This took about 10s to process.
22:16
I'm Res = ImRes = Image Restorer?
@DJMcMayhem I prefer choppers. :P
@Dennis Refer to @TuxCopter in that case :P
@Dennis Apache is the way to go
@TrojanByAccident relevant
@Downgoat That was, indeed, what I was referring to :P
22:23
@Dennis Hmm, good point. Either that or a half-broken case in heavy traffic

noɥʇʎԀʎzɐɹƆtl;dr We need to agree on what is or is not noise in The Nineteenth Byte. Room owners shouldn't determine the guidelines for noise. Nor should they have the burden of doing so alone. @HelkaHomba Citation needed. I like to believe that our moderators are above the political nonsense of the "code of blue" and related concepts.

@wat ChatExchange is already a thing btw

@TuxCopter yeah that's another reason not to use that name

I was thinking about how chat means cat in French.
@flawr It's just an add-on to my answer to you challenge. I'm reimplementing this in a cleaner way. Should be ready in a few days.
In what way is that a problem???
wat
wat
22:36
not a problem
I was just noticing that it is similar to the name of an esolang
that could be a nice pun for the PPCG users
@mınxomaτ I'm looking forward to that=)
I'm hoping to work with the the person who taught me much of my assembly knowledge. Optimizing for speed this time.
With some of the beefier CPUs, you can store whole image patches in the L-cache. That's insane.
@mınxomaτ It does look pretty cool
Oh, wait a second, I have another demo of that.
@Mego Well, there's no easy way to tell is there, since mod actions are not totally transparent. I don't really think it's a big deal either since our mods are pretty open and this is a relatively meager place to exercise power. But it's just human nature that you wouldn't report your buddy for running a red light but you might report another car that almost hit you.
22:42
lol

@HelkaHomba So really you're just making an unfounded assumption that our mods don't hold themselves to the same standards as the rest of us. Nice.
Anonymous
Our mods have much more integrity than that.
Pixel-Perfect reconstruction of image with smaller issues (like many small letters).
Uhg, the SE chat makes this a lossy JPG :/
Anonymous
@mınxomaτ That's really impressive
@mınxomaτ I hope you make a more or less user friendly version of your software, a relative started digitizing a ton of old family photos/slides.
22:48
I'm building a UI. But at this time Windows only.
But some of them are damaged quite a lot. And this looks way better than what I've managed to do with other photo editing software.
@flawr I would love to have some real test cases for future presets!

I think I have an old, damaged photo digitized somewhere
22:51
Well, to be fair, the US is usually pretty confused about France, too.
@mınxomaτ Jeez, how many times did you save that picture?
@mınxomaτ Well I'd have to ask which ones could actually be published first:)
@TrojanByAccident Uh, once. If you don't count the intentionally destroyed copies.
@flawr Of course.
@mınxomaτ Is it correct that you always need a separate mask that masks the flaws?
Not for this variant.
22:53
@mınxomaτ Then this ELA seems off
@TrojanByAccident You downloaded the JPEG. I uploaded a lossless PNG, which imgur converted.
All the test pics are from Pexels.
@mınxomaτ ah.
@flawr Well it depends what you want to remove. This variant needs some kind of consistency in the flaw (a stark color, luminosity, brightness or contrast difference). The EBII one is more for bigger patches (i.e. it's a "magic erase").
@Mego No. I'm explaining what I think noɥʇʎԀʎzɐɹƆ was talking about in his comment. I think our mods are fine and not unethical, but I also think they (and anyone else) is capable of becoming unethical, even if only in small ways.
Anonymous
@HelkaHomba The way you stated it made it sound like you yourself held that opinion.
22:57
@flawr But I'm generally planning to do a short video tutorial of using this software should it ever be finished.
@mınxomaτ Cool=) Do you already have parts of it online somwhere? Or some blog where we can see what you're working on?
No. Because I'm lazy.
> Alastor - God of family feuds.
The Greek were weird.

@mınxomaτ I thought that was Steve Harvey
@mınxomaτ Well then keep us up to date here=)
@Mego No, he is the god of snarky sexual innuendos and disapproving looks.

23:02
@mınxomaτ And blaming things on the producers
Nah, that's the Top Gear cast.
@flawr I could - of course - also create a Lightroom plugin and charge copious amounts of money.
@mınxomaτ You could, but why would anyone do that=)
Right. I'd have to deal with customer service. shudders
5
Haha=) But how about an addon for GIMP?
I really, really dislike GIMP.
23:08
Why?
I really, really love GIMP. What's wrong with it?
Other than it not having shape creation
I didn't say there's something wrong with it.
I don't like it too much either, but mainly because I'm used to working with commercial software and I'm always looking for the features GIMP doesn't actually have (yet).
@flawr Such as?
I'm more at home in the vector world anyway. So it's mainly InDesign or Inkscape for me. Paint.NET (with tons of plugins) on Windows, Pixelmator on macOS for raster images.
23:10
@TrojanByAccident Non-destructive editing. e.g. adjusting a filter you applied previously after you've already applied another filter.
Or what is called "smart objects" in photoshop.
wat
wat
@TrojanByAccident THIS
@flawr Ah, yeah, you would have to undo up to that point
What kind of shape creation do you mean?
wat
wat
@flawr like
Such as making circles or squares
wat

23:11
no circles
@TrojanByAccident Which is very annoying, and does not really let you work productively in my opinion.
wat
wat
no triangles or w/e
@TrojanByAccident Get corresponding brushes?
@flawr Too lazy :P
@TrojanByAccident You can make circular/square selections and fill them in
23:12
Oh, I forgot something. I absolutely love Affinity Designer.
wat
wat
@HelkaHomba True.
@HelkaHomba That requires more effort
wat
wat
But what if you need a triangle?
Slowly fading from Inkscape/InDesign to Affinity.
wat
wat
@mınxomaτ is it on linux
23:12
Probably not.
wat

then I'll stick to gimp and inkscape, thanks
@wat Make a new image, make a square, cut part of it off, copy-paste back
wat

@TrojanByAccident Meh.
but once again, too much effort for me :P
Anyone here have experience with an intuos?
@TrojanByAccident I know @Lynn has a drawing tablet, but I don't remember which one.
23:14
@flawr Hmm.
I'm looking at buying the Wacom Intuos Touch on Amazon
it comes with some software
wat
wat
@TrojanByAccident Not an intuos, but my school has 10 Wacom tablets
but I'm not sure if there's a better one that's cheaper, or if it's better to get a different tablet and get the software separate
@wat Well, Wacom makes a lot of tablets :P
wat
wat
@TrojanByAccident Actually it is Intuos... nm

I think it is the Small version of this
23:18
So In my new language, Del|m|t, there's a delimiter that the code gets parsed by, and each token is a command. The delimiter is subject to change over the course of the program. My problem is that I need a way to specify what the starting delimiter is. Ideally, I would like the user to be able to specify a regex, and not just a single character.
Should I have the regex just be on the first line before a newline?
Or would another method be better?
I think someone could make a sitcom out of Egyptian gods: gods-and-monsters.com/egyptian-gods-and-goddesses.html
Is there a character that is/never can be used in a regex within ASCII 0-127?
would space work?
Anybody Irish here? How in the world do you pronounce "Airmed/Airmid"?
Hm. Apparently ar-ah-mij.
23:36
@mınxomaτ Been watching the grand tour?
Some. Yeah.
I really don't like the driver or Braincrash, but all in all I like it.
Of course, for IP reasons, "The Producers" is now "The Director", which is mildly amusing.
@MistahFiggins Command line argument
@Pavel Ah I had forgot about those, yes that would work perfectly
Thanks
@mınxomaτ I had high hopes for it but yeah, the lap times and celebrity things are too cringey. And I can't stand how planned the trip/race/external segments feel.
I don't really care. Top Gear always was extremely scripted. You only realize how much if you've seen both UK and US Top Gear. Many of the episodes have the exact same script, so you see how little both shows actually improvised.
23:43
'night
TGT is just a bit more casual for me. It doesn't care too much about itself. Also remember how the original Top Gear reboot took forever to find it's pace.
In other news: I've been enjoying season two of The Reassembler.
@mınxomaτ I mean like, Top Gear (when it was Clarkson/Hammond/May) did genuine races across countries, or at least it looked genuine (and I can make allowances for letting camera cars catch up and stuff). But Grand Tour does a race that starts serious but ends with obviously planned powerslides through shipping containers and "killing" one of the presenters.
@mınxomaτ That's a good, cathartic show
I always liked May. I also recommend the three James & Oz's Adventure seasons.
I've seen that too, hilarious! (and informative about alcohol)
Beer & Whisky was the best IMO
All of the Extras are good, really.
> What about their other adventures??? Oz and James blaze through the Netherlands...Oz and James Blow about Colombia...
Oz and James pick up Cougars at Crate and Barrel...
Good idea, actually.
