8:00 AM
@Ken: Hi :-) Wadup?

HALO
u watch the Aus open Kaumu?

user228700
Nope. I don't um, follow sports.

I remember I quoted someone on SE for my yearbook quote
Good times

user228700
Hey, what is a yearbook, exactly?

@Kaumudi.H o.o
Oh my god, that's also an American thing...

user228700
8:03 AM
@SirCumference -__- Sure, yeah, I just spent two minutes typing all that about podcasts. Go ahead, completely ignore that.

Jeez, I am not acculturated...
@Kaumudi.H Huh?
Oh woah
Sorry XD
@Kaumudi.H Huh, thanks :D
Uh, what?

user228700
NP :-) And yeah, we don't have yearbooks here. No, uh, prom, no "homecoming" dances or anything.

user228700
@SirCumference What?

@Kaumudi.H The link just has two guys talking
@Kaumudi.H D:
We got prom and yearbooks

user228700
@SirCumference That's the whole point. U sort of get so bored that u fall asleep.

8:05 AM
Jesus christ I feel like I'm losing it
I somehow completely misread you

user228700
Lol, what did u think I was talking about?

Basketball, not kidding...
I read "Dear Hank" as "Slam Dunk"

user228700
x'D

user228700
@SirCumference We've this small event called "farewell". Our juniors plan everything and it's sort of like a party but not. It happens right before finals and our teachers say goodbye and everything.

@Kaumudi.H "a book containing photographs of the senior class in a school or college and details of school activities in the previous year"
~Dictionary

user228700
8:07 AM
Ah, I see. Sorry, I could've googled that :-P I thought u might elaborate.

user228700
Eg: Don't u get people to sign it and all?

We do
Here's what the pics look like
Not my yearbook, found this pic online

user228700
Yeah, it looks kinda old, that one.

We also quote people on our yearbook

user228700
We just take a group photo.

8:09 AM
I quoted some guy from SE who apparently deleted his account
"Don't take yourself too seriously, there is more mystery than clarity. Learn daily, and dismiss nothing. Understand that a lot is a collection of a little. So far, this is my summary of how to live." -Kevin Tah N.

user228700
What dyou mean "quote people"?

@Kaumudi.H Like this
Also found online

user228700
Oh, so beneath the photo?

Or this

user228700
Man, that's a tough challenge, deciding what to have that quote be.

8:11 AM

user228700
Ha, nice.

@Kaumudi.H Depends on the school, some have it in other ways

user228700
Wow, that's really nice.

Others like this

@SirCumference That is a cool quote ;)

8:13 AM
@anonymous I found a funny one
Wish my school would've let me done something clever

@SirCumference You guys can write whatever quote you wish in the yearbook?

@anonymous I guess some schools are less lenient than others
My school only let me quote from someone else, not come up with my own quote...

Hehe :P The idea is really nice actually
The quote you select tells a lot about you
and your personality
:)

Also funny
Never forget the opportunities :)

user228700
Where are u finding these?

8:16 AM
Looked up "funny high school yearbook quotes"

We use slambooks rather than yearbooks :)

@anonymous Slambooks?
where you from?

@SirCumference Middle East ...

@anonymous Huh, never heard of something like that...

user228700
Yeah, I have a slambook somewhere here...

8:21 AM
@SirCumference They are waaayyy cooler than yearbooks. One page for each classmate. And you get to write more nonsense in them :D

@anonymous Aw, that sounds awesome

user228700
Well, yes, but the problem is that a lot of these books have really stupid questions.

Well, in our case at least, my school gave each of us our own page
To just add pics or whatever we wanted

@Kaumudi.H I fill slambooks mostly to answer the stupid questions :P
Otherwise life would be so boring!
@SirCumference Oh. We have our own personalized slambooks with entries of all other classmates
Each one has the writings of all the other classmates

@anonymous So like a signing page?

8:24 AM
isn't there anything better to do than discussing high school

@BalarkaSen Oh right, you're still in high school...
You don't feel nostalgia for it, do you?

@BalarkaSen Naaahhhh...nothing could be better...!
School life rocks!

meh

@Kaumudi.H Like what?
@BalarkaSen You guys get a yearbook?

user228700
@anonymous This of course, varies from person to person and I'd have to agree with @Balarka: Meh.

8:25 AM
probably? who knows

High school was a lot slower and nicer imo
Less reading and writing notes

@Kaumudi.H You guys are so boring. MEH MEH MEH :P

@BalarkaSen Uh, you're strangely apathetic towards your school...

user228700
@anonymous Well, not everybody has the good fortune to have a nice time in high school. We're not boring, we just didn't (/don't) enjoy the experience.

But yeah, high school was a lot more of exploring whatever stuff I wanted to on my own

8:27 AM
@Kaumudi.H "we're not boring" speak for yourself

user228700
@BalarkaSen Oh, wow, sorry then.

@BalarkaSen Well then...
Hey @kenshin

yo9

@Kaumudi.H Huh, so you never had prom?

user228700
Nope.

8:28 AM
Or anything similar?

prom is an american thing
in Australia we have school formal

Wow...I am not acculturated, I guess...

user228700
To my knowledge, prom is a dance, yes?

@Kaumudi.H Yeah, also just chatting, eating, etc.

yes I guess you could call it a dance
a dirty dance

8:29 AM
@Kenshin Uh, no?

@Kenshin Eh ?

ohu don't do that at prom/'

@Kenshin Nope, I'm interested in hearing about whatever prom you've attended

I don't live in America
but I've seen American Pie

@Kaumudi.H It's mostly associated with romance since you take a partner with you to the prom
But in my case, and with many others, I ended up just hanging out with friends

8:30 AM
@Kenshin Now I see why you felt it is a dirty dance XD
It is not like that

@anonymous No idea what he's talking about

It is more like dancing with friends on the last day of school and partying
Nothing "dirty".

@anonymous Not really last day, more like last 2 months

@SirCumference Oh yes. True.

user228700
@SirCumference I see. Like I said before, we have an event called "farewell". It is organised by our juniors and we get "invited" to it. We all must wear formals. In my farewell, they held games, the teachers said their "Goodbye speeches" and ooh, they played a video collage of all of our photos and everything. Probably the best day of last year.

8:31 AM
Though I don't know about other schools
@Kaumudi.H Hmm, "farewell" sounds so...final. Like you're never going to see these people again. :/

user228700
Almost all of us had studied in that school for the past 12 years...very little people come and go so they had photos from when we were in 1st grade and everything.

Idk if that's just what I'm thinking at first
@Kaumudi.H Oh right, we wear formals too at prom
@Kaumudi.H Dang, that sounds nice

user228700
It does sound like an end. Our finals follow immediately after so we don't get to see anybody till then--everybody's too busy trying not to kill themselves in the weeks leading up to the finals.

Ah :(

end is fun

user228700
8:35 AM
Formals=Suit for guys and a dress for girls, yes?

@BalarkaSen ಠ_ಠ

good riddance

@Kaumudi.H Yep
I thought that's an American term tho, I'm surprised you said it

user228700
Which term?

"Formals"
At least my dictionary says it's American...

user228700
8:36 AM
Dude x'D Okay, no, not an American term.

Dunno if I trust this thing anymore

user228700
Here, formals -- Saris for the girls and suits for the boys.

user228700
It's a very big deal, wearing formals and all :-P

user228700
At least it seems like it then.

user228700
@Sir: I'm telling you, hanging out here is not gonna help u sleep :-P

8:38 AM
Oh right, some schools (if not all) let juniors join the prom too

@SirCumference Juniors only come to eat our food :P So we kicked them out :D

I remember I didn't have a suit one time, so I just came wearing my coat...
And it got hot as hell
People gave me weird looks

user228700
One time?

@Kaumudi.H Yeah, realize that didn't make much sense

user228700
How many times have u been to a prom? :-P

8:39 AM
Junior year prom
Well, two. Junior and Senior

user228700
U have two proms? I see.

Well, in my school at least, both juniors and seniors attended the proms
Not sure if that's a global thing
So 1 prom, shared by both of those grades

user228700
Prom is never gonna be a thing in India :-P

@Kaumudi.H Why?

if my school holds a farewell i'll definitely go. such a joyful experience to never see all my fellow classmates again ever
"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

8:41 AM
@BalarkaSen Buddy...

user228700
@BalarkaSen Have u read "Catcher in the Rye"?

nah

@Kaumudi.H Wait, do you follow the grade order "Freshman, sophomore, junior, senior"?

user228700
@BalarkaSen I have a feeling that you'd really be able to resonate with Holden Caulfield.

no idea who that is but i'll take that as a compliment

8:42 AM
@BalarkaSen I get a feeling that you had a REALLY BAD TIME at school :( Either that or you are paranoid :P

user228700

i'm mostly joking. i have an ok time in school; i just don't care much

user228700
@BalarkaSen Holden Caulfield is the protagonist of the book "Catcher in the Rye". It's a fairly short book and I feel that u might like it is what I said before. I've read it about...6 times so far.

first time to use the function ...
are there any interesting things here?

user228700
@Sir: I'm gonna stop talking and help u get out of this sleep-procrastination thing :-P

8:46 AM
I mostly identify myself with the Underground Man from Notes from the Underground
not wholly, but partially

ok @Secret please stop spamming all chatrooms =P
O that, while managed to set the record of the most visitors in h bar yesterday, I got myself tempbanned for 2 hours after a gamedev chat user flagged my "spam"

@SirCumference: please don't restart the MathJax hijinks.

@JohnRennie Honestly, I was seeing if the stuff is permanently broken or not

10 messages moved to Trash

and partial doesn't seem to work

$\partial$

Woah, wait
$\partial$
Oh, ok, nvm

oops lol

Looks fine here. Refresh the page and the damage should be undone.

Anyone good at spanish?
All right, I'm heading to sleep
Hopefully finally

9:01 AM
@JohnRennie r u a tennis fan

No. I'll vaguely listen out for the results if a Brit is doing well, but nit otherwise.

is tennis an upper class sport in brittiain @JohnRennie

Upper class? That's an odd question.

I thought Brits had a class system
some activities are for the peasants and others for the upper class

had ...

9:09 AM
oh I thought you guys still have it

@Kenshin This article explains it well royalcentral.co.uk/blogs/…

ty @anonymous

These days we have a wealth system instead

that's silly wealth <> class

@Kenshin you might want to ask yourself how all those landed aristocrats got to be landed aristocrats. Hint: money was involved.

9:41 AM
@JohnRennie I don't know how the aristocrats originally gained their power, but I don't have to to know that wealth <> classs
just because you win the lotto doesn't mean you are of the same class as old money
you need to possess the right values, attitudes and beliefs to really fit in to the upper class
money alone doesn't cut it

10:31 AM
hi

Hi.

Sup?

I saw a ghost when i woke up. =)

Lol.

I stared at it for like 5 seconds and then it disappeared.
Gradually.

10:37 AM
Haha.

cool

Yeah, it also had claws like freddy krueger.
=)
I was like half sleep.

Seems like you watched a horror movie shortly?

Not really.
For some reason i was having nightmares.
Or idk if they were nightmares.
I don't see dreams that often nowadays.

Oh.

10:40 AM
It was weird though.

You're a physics student by any chance?

Well i'd like to go to uni to learn physics someday.

Oh, you're in High school?

Atm i'm just trying to get some introductory books read.
Well i think it would be translated as high school, but the school systems are what they are.
I think it's about the same level.

oh.

2 hours later…
user228700
12:17 PM
@JohnR: Snack! --

@Kaumudi.H that sounds like an instruction :-)

user228700

user228700
Oranges are back, baby! :-P

Orange and salt

user228700
Precisely.

12:19 PM
You mentioned that before, but I had forgotten about it.
I have eaten oranges since but I haven't tried them with salt.

user228700
Oh, OK. IIRC, u had even read an article or two about the fact that it is common in Asia to eat fruits with salt.

How sweet is the orange? I tend to buy clementines, which are sweeter than oranges.

user228700
The oranges are not very sweet at all. On a scale of biscuit (1) to Gulab Jamun (10), I'd say that these are about 5.

I wonder if the sweetness makes a difference in how well they go with salt.

user228700
Hmm, I think it does.

user228700
12:22 PM
How sweet do oranges get tho?

user228700
@heather: Hello :-)

hello

user228700
Gah, now I'm choking on salty orange juice! Agh!

salty orange juice - you make it sound delicious ...

user228700
Hehe, I have a gift, you see.

user228700
12:28 PM
I once ate rice with ketchup (Spoiler alert: It wasn't very good >.<)

@Kaumudi.H I'm having second thoughts about your advice on food :-)

I dont think eating rice with ketchup is that rare tho.

user228700
:-) I'm only kidding. These two are the only wacky food combos that I have tried.

user228700
Well, no, one time, many many birthdays ago, my friends pressured me into dipping a potato chip in coca cola but that is it.

I went through a phase of eating everything in a bread roll. My finest achievement was eating meat pies in a bread roll. Like a burger, but with the burger replaced by a meat pie.

user228700
12:31 PM
...I'm unable to imagine what that would taste like.

It was very nice.

user228700
In fact, I don't even know what a bread roll is!

A roll is a small, often round loaf of bread served as a meal accompaniment (eaten plain or with butter). A roll can be served and eaten whole or cut transversely and dressed with filling between the two halves. Rolls are also commonly used to make sandwiches similar to those produced using slices of bread. It is commonly confused with a mini baguette. == Europe == Rolls are common in Europe, especially in Germany, Italy (where they are called panino or panini) and Austria. They are equally common in both Australia and New Zealand, and very common in Canada and Brazil. Just like English, the German...

user228700
You'd dig a hole on its surface to stuff it with food?

user228700
Ah, my brain is weird--you mean like a sandwich, don't you?

12:33 PM
yeah, but the other option would work too =D

user228700
:-P

@Kaumudi.H Yes. Cut the roll in half. Butter both sides. Then put them back together with the pie in between.

user228700
Oh, I see!

user228700
It looks very nice, indeed :-)

user228700
I have to say, it is quite surprising that despite our differences in food habits, we have managed to discuss about the subject so much that the chatroom itself has been renamed!

12:37 PM
People recognise true genius :-)

user228700
This seems even more remarkable, given that I'm vegetarian and you don't entertain veggies in your pantry!

user228700
@JohnRennie :-P True that.

@Kaumudi.H I ate vegetable pilau with chole on Saturday. That's vegetarian.

user228700
Ah, yes, how dare I forget?! :-P

I didn't eat it because it was vegetarian. I ate it because it tasted good :-)
I'm not an anything-arian. My primary criterion is that the food has to be delicious.

user228700
12:39 PM
Hmm, OK :-)

Just out of curiouisity, and you don't have to answer, why are you vegetarian?
Is it tradition i.e. being Brahmin?
@SirCumference you're supposed to be asleep!

@JohnRennie Nope, it's 7:44am now
Though I'm wondering why every morning I wake up to is overcast...

You only went to bed four hours ago ...

user228700
Well, initially yes, my parents didn't feed me meat/egg because of our religion but now, as Hazel Grace from TFiOS put it so eloquently-- "I want me to minimise the number of deaths I'm responsible for"

user228700
@SirCumference Morning, then!

12:45 PM
@JohnRennie Then again, I hadn't slept in a few days, so this is kind of a victory

@SirCumference 0_0

@Kaumudi.H we have a new site member who has been asking about relativity, and she is vegan. I've been trying to tempt her into the chat room but with no success so far.

@JohnRennie who?

user228700
@JohnRennie How dyou even know that she's vegan?!

user228700
12:48 PM
Ah, she'd be welcome to The h Bar(becue)!

That's what I was thinking

user228700
How have u been tempting her to visit?

Sha, for future reference quick questions like this are often best asked in the chat room. That allows greater freedom for discussion than the main site does. — John Rennie 24 hours ago

she would fit right in, yeah =)

user228700
Lol :-P

user228700
12:51 PM
Yes, she probably would. Although, is anybody here vegan?

I keep suggesting to people that they should try the chat room to discuss questions, but very few people ever do. That seems a shame.
@Kaumudi.H I don't know of any vegans amongst our ranks.

user228700
@JohnRennie Oh, I see. Why is it a shame?

@Kaumudi.H Because if you want to learn about physics the chat room is a very useful resource.
I guess I'm the most regular member, but lots of other users also help out with discussions. Daniel, ACM, etc

user228700
Ah, yes.

Hmm, maybe we just need a different approach. Something like "Hey, you should drop by the h barbecue, yatta yatta"

user228700
12:54 PM
Hey, I too am religiously regular! Although I can't help with GR/QFT(/Topology)--I mostly only do the asking.

@Kaumudi.H I am actually almost vegan.

@SirCumference I more or less say that, but very few people ever do.

@Kaumudi.H In the sense that if a chocolate bar for example contains a little bit of milk, i won't mind.

user228700
Oh, I see...

It would be a shame if your dietary rules prohibited you from chocolate :-)
It's one of life's essential luxuries (if that isn't a contradiction)

12:56 PM
@JohnRennie Tbh I never joined the chat room due to another's recommendation
I just kind of stumbled here out of curiosity on my own
I think it'll happen with time.

user228700
I remember that I joined the chatroom to discuss a question with @JohnR after he had answered a question of mine on the main site.

I'd like to think I'm somewhat regular in my visits (not that I can help anyone with anything)

I originally joined for the Physics chat sessions, though they seem to be tailing off in popularity.

Just because i think there's a big difference between buying a gallon of milk and a product that contains a little milk.

user228700
Ah, this one:

user228700
12:57 PM

Q: Why does the area under a Maxwell speed distribution graph equal unity?

Kaumudi. HI am learning the "Kinetic Theory of Gases", in which I have now come across the "Maxwell speed distribution" graph, which I have attached here: My copy of "Resnick and Halliday" states that the area under each curve has a numerical value of unity. The area under the curve is given by the fol...

@JohnRennie Yes, in lieu of breaking LaTeX

yeah, i always go back and read the transcript, and there isn't much to read.

Gosh 1 p.m. I have to go.

Oh quick question.

I've actually been pesceterian my whole life, but about 4 months ago i gave up fish and dairy products.

12:59 PM
Yes?

@JohnRennie Do you guys get yearbooks in high school?

@SirCumference No, or at least not when I was at school in the 1970s.

@JohnRennie good day, Sir Rennie =)

@JohnRennie :/

user228700
JR: we can discuss anything in the chat room. Just click this link. – John Rennie Sep 8 '16 at 8:22

user228700
1:00 PM
^ This changed my whole life :-P

Well, we can discuss anything, and we do!

user228700
:-)

user228700
@JohnRennie Bye!

@heather oops, I guess that was goodbye not hello. Sorry ...
Right, I'm off.

got to go to the bus stop, have a good day everyone

user228700
1:08 PM
Have a nice day, @heather :-)

1:20 PM
By the way, @heather, keep in mind that the Friedmann models I began explaining are pretty tough for college students to understand. Your current understanding of them puts you well above many of my friends and will certainly help you in the future.
Gotta say, that's impressive. I had trouble with them myself only two or so months ago.

2:03 PM
any python experts on?
nvm problem solved
I can now scrape all 2016 tennis data

2 hours later…
3:58 PM
@ACuriousMind You around?

4:17 PM
@BernardoMeurer what's eating you?

@BernardoMeurer intermittently

Howdy

I already figured it out
it was a linear algebra question :)
Also
Don't you guys love it when you solve the question, get it right, and then mark the wrong option
:)

@BernardoMeurer That's definitely me

too much enthusiasm for the new name of the room lol

4:31 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform :-)

Can any 2nd degree polynomial with real coefficients be
represented in the form (ax+b)(cx+d) where the coefficients
a,b,c,d and variable x are real?

@LuBu What do you mean by variable x is "real" ? Do you mean whether in that form x always has real solutions ? The answer is no.

@anonymous Yeah, i guess that's what i mean.
Is it easy to see why the answer is no.
I haven't really gotten into imaginaries yet, so i only try to consider reals.

@LuBu Imaginary roots are simpler than you (probably) think

@JohnRennie Idk about that, atm im just trying to go trough these books and just thought about this thing.
I haven't rly gotten into calculus yet either =).
